Well, I'm new to ERPs and such.

But I feel sexuality is important to a character.

Like what's been said already. People have sexualities, why shouldn't characters?

My character Zana Moui is Bisexual, prefers females over guys. Truthfully I've been.. Nervous to ERP with Zana, cause of two reasons. One I am inexperienced. Two. Most of whom want to engage in ERPs just kinda.. Well it's either "Hi I just met you, and this is crazy, but let's make love." or "Hi, you're cute. -Two dates later- Let's make love."

It feels.. Unorganic to me.

I dunno.

I'll probably get used to it as I practice.

Yeah some characters are willing to have those sort of casual encounters as I mentioned with my character Kylar, but if it does not fit the your character, it does not fit her and should could be polite and nice while declining or just tell them to shove off! :D

That being said, Don't feel forced to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. If Zana does pick up a guy for the night and you just fade it to black, that should be okay. RP is a story its more about how actions affect characters than the actual actions themselves in my opinion. Character development and all that. Hope this made sense, I'm on like two hours of sleep.

I'm just gonna respond to the OP at this point since there are removed posts that sorta make the discussion look like Swiss Cheese.

Tarot is surprisingly wary of sexual relations. While he will flirt and has even done a bit of work in the area of titillation (he's gotten into places under the guise of a male dancer), he actually knows how damaging sexual relations can be--they imply things. They cause problems, more problems then they're worth in his mind. He's blackmailed enough people with proof of their own escapades (he's used several adulteries against their participants) to know that they give leverage to the right people.

It's why he's made his list of requirements before he'll consider even courting the notion of a real relationship with a person, let alone intercourse. It's a list of things that are impossibly specific to the point where one (another player) would literally have to build a character specifically to appeal to Tarot. The odds of their being this person in the world are so slim that Tarot can feel safe knowing that it will never happen.

As for say, discussing the topic of sexuality, he can be very frank. Again, he's used peoples own acts against them as leverage. He feels that essentially it should be an act between two people (he's not big on group sessions, so to speak) that enjoy each others company but should have some semblance of a dichotomy brought together, feeling the differences are what make the climax far more enjoyable. One aggressive, one shy; one dark haired, one fair haired. Things like that. Two opposing halves that build on each other to fit a whole--now that I think about it, Tarot's very zen about sex! :D

The Controversial ones always are popular. Lotta points to discuss!

It's also a pretty ubiquitous topic. RP within any public forum (such as an MMO) is social story telling, so relationships are inevitable because interaction is inevitable. Some of those relationships will be romantic or adult, and with that....brown chicken brown cow

Personally I think the discussion, sans the compromised account and erotica posting or whatever happened earlier, positively highlights that while many RPers will ERP, the amount of graphic detail involved varies as well as how necessary we feel it is.

Most importantly though I think the thread proves that the overwhelming majority of us are mature about it as opposed to creepy

I personally have no qualms about sexuality in RP and will go on the record and say that I've no room to judge since I've done a lot of things, not all I'm proud of but by the Gods I've done them. Ultimately though I prefer it to be a natural part of character progression and quietly frown upon doing it "Just cuz." I'm uber picky, I've been playing FF14 for over a year and none of my chars have really gotten into any relationships since I've not really found any worthy partners yet. Also some traits all my chars share is loyalty and affection for those they fancy... I also enjoy showering them with gifts. So if any of my chars start doing that then watch out, they might like you xD

When it comes to my characters,

Valthoran is heterosexual though he doesn't mind being flirted with by men and just takes it as a compliment. He prefers intellectual partners and considers magical aptitude a bonus. He does prefer Elezen though with an emphasis on his fellow Duskwights.

Byron is heterosexual and likes both Hyur, Elezen, and those of mixed blood. Though being from Ishgard his racial interest are very locked and never considered others.

Merri is 100% homosexual despite being a traditional Keeper of the Moon and is only interested in fellow Keepers. Aside from that she is more flexible and just desires to be held and feel accepted. Shes also fluffy and purple. Very purple.

Aurelia is somewhat bisexual with a bit of a preference for women, though being a Garlean magitek engineer caused her to focus most of her life on her work and has only recently been allowed to peek into her sexuality and feelings for others in general.

Ansathota is bisexual with no clear preference, though she does claim to enjoy a woman's softness. Being a former pirate she's pretty relaxed on the whole issue though she becomes more girly around those she fancies.

Haihane is bisexual though she is much too shy to ever outwardly show much interest in another, though she opens up easier to other Domans and those interested in her people's spirituality.

Pharos is pretty much asexual and only has interest in gil due to being a sheltered albino Ul'dahn noblewoman. Though being released from the confines of her home has made her available for exploring herself further. Would most likely take a patient and knowledgeable friend to get close enough for her to become that way.

...I RP it if it comes along. It usually does come along and it's not a big deal or anything. My character's bisexual and dumps everybody he's been with. Just gets bored of them and moves on, usually nothing personal other than he gets bored or thinks things are getting too serious.

The two characters I roleplay on FFXIV don't really delve into ERP though they're both characters I play on different... edges of the general subject.

Hiro: My primary is a young mercenary going down the path of being something of an information gatherer. He's analytical and generally point blank with his view points which has him on a bit of a robotic personality. Sexuality in general on a social level interests him, he watches interactions within the Quicksand and within his own circle of friends and acquaintances and does his best to understand the dynamics in their entirety on a purely logic based view.

He's read about seduction, sex, and all the stuff in between but the most he's ever seen first hand is seduction as subtle flirting goes entirely over his head. However he also knows how sexuality can be utilized as a tool and is weary about it to a point of subconscious paranoia believing the emotions and stimulus that come with relationships and sex are blinding and for someone engaging in the activities and "spy games" he is currently involved in, which is something that he considers fatal.

All those quirks he's a character I've had the most fun with relationships and sex in RP in a while, tilting heads, inciting face palming, people wanting to hug him, and awkward moments with courtesans of all sorts. As far as engaging in it, highly unlikely as he's certainly not interested (scared even) of short or one-time flings and is far too insensitive to maintain an actual working relationship.

This may just be an already repeated viewpoint of the topic but ill go ahead and post it anyways.

Inessa is a largely Asexual character that has never held an interest or have entertained healthy thoughts of sex. She is generally focused on work or helping others most of the time. She has received sexual advances or people have tried to comment about her physical attributes, that would eventually lead into a romantic situation or interest. However, Inessa, being sex stupid (not knowing anything about sex) and being very blunt, generally takes shot's at their confidence or just generally doesn't understand or see what they are trying to do when they try to seduce her. This doesn't however, mean that she cant be sexual, it just means the RP that will allow this to happen hasn't happened yet, and probably wont for a while.

As for ERP and normal RP in general, I find them to bring a higher quality of RP, especially when sexual characters are mixed with non-sexual characters. Makes for some immensely interesting RP as in real life, you will often have to navigate you're environment and co-workers, which can be a very diverse group of both homo, hetero, asexual and so on. This is especially true with Free Company story based role play's, where generally large group's of character's will have to be able to handle being around people they both like and don't like. IC temper's and sexual frustrations will flare, characters may find themselves to be changed ICly to something they once weren't, but in the end, its interesting RP.

Of course though, ERP or sex seems to be a common or relevant theme in general NPC interactions and the lore even say's that there are Brothel's and sex slave trade that's been around for a very, very long time in Eorzea, so it would make sense from both an RP, world lore and story standpoint for ERP and general interactions between characters in normal RP to co-mingle, as in ERP relationships and interactions carrying over into normal RP and having some sort of impact on it.

Just my thoughts on it though. I haven't ever ERPed since Ive been on Balmung.   @_@

Don't worry I made sense of most of it.

I normally say In Character that Zana isn't ready for sex, since she requires a good emotional connection to the person to even consider having sex.

And I've been er.. "Practicing" (Like my friend and I don't consider it to be a 'canon' RP.) with a friend to improve how I write ERPs and stuff.

I don't have a problem with character's whom are sexually active, most of my friends who I RP with have sexually active characters. ^^ (I should stop cause I am rambling like a fool.)

I've done noncanon RP and ERP to get myself back in the swing of things or after a dry spell. Usually after buckling down at work or school or when I'd go through one of my OMGALLTHECONTENTANDSTOOFSRRRRAAAAAWWWWRRRR.

Though I'd get strange looks from people that didn't understand the concept of noncanon or AU practice RP. Especially if there was eroticism in it. They'd think it was just an excuse to be a cyber hound.

All I'm going to add, aside from the juicy tidbit that was already posted, is: if you decide to pursue an IC relationship at all, but especially if your story ends up going to a sexual place, please ensure that your character's partner(s) are in a healthy state of mind. Be picky as hell. Seriously. Things can spiral out of control very easily, and I consider myself fortunate that when I decided to express my character's romance IC, it was 1.) safe, with a very good friend, and 2.) with someone in a very happy relationship OOC, whose RL partner knew what was going on and what IC and OOC meant, and who would never dream of allowing things to become inappropriate OOC.

THIS.

This this this this this.

90% of the reason why there are so many flat out obstacles to romancing my characters is to ward off the crazies who are going to blend IC/OOC together into a horrifying clusterfuck.

E'yup. I agree with all of this except the second point. Not necessarily everyone is in a relationship in real life, there are people who are sound, sane people who are single (right? Right? No? Okay...) and who are clearly able to set boundaries and differentiate between IC and OOC, and are very particular about it.

Ahem. That aside, Eleni is a virgin (yup, it's true! Don't get any wrong ideas men, or I will poke you with a fork! I will!) and hence, she's immature and inexperienced, and sex in general is a bit of an unknown thing to her. However, she is a woman, and therefore, she does experience sexuality. Ah, and she's heterosexual, well, at least she thinks so!

Now, onto the next bit. Sex in RP is, of course, like in real life, a part and parcel of the characters' lives. It's a deep, precious thing that I guess a character would share with the one they truly love, it's something that builds up after intercations and getting to know another character, it shouldn't be 'oh, we just met, let's get a bed', (yeah, okay, it depends on the character. I'm sure there are highly sexual characters out there who engage for fun's sake only), once again, like in real life. So, no, there isn't anything wrong with it, it's perfectly normal.

As for ERP, I really have no clue on what my views on it are as of yet. It's RP, just like all other RP, and if it stays as such, that is, only IC RP (no OOC bleed, cybering blah blah), then it's quite fine. Remember, it's your character, not you (once again, I don't think there will ever be an end to how much one can emphasize on keeping a strong boundary between IC and OOC, and be firm in that matter, no, seriously, be IC 200%, it's called RP for a reason, and prevent bleeds) so I think it should be okay to let your character get into some explicit interaction.

That said, I think most, if not all, of the people in the RPC are very nice and sound of mind, and therefore, trustworthy. :)

Hey, sometimes you just wanna do lewd for fun. That's fine if you're following the usual rules!

I think that this by itself would be okay on many levels. Just a casual, non-cannon fling.

Alot of issues though when it comes to romance is trying to keep OOC and IC separated and be picky with who it's with. There are instances where this rule should be avoided on certain level's though, such as if you rolled an IC (excuse the language) prostitute or any highly sexually active character, in which case, the rules of being picky go completely out the window as you technically, while its not required, can or will sleep with many different characters for the purpose the character was made for.

((On an OOC note, I know there are ERP FC's out there that tend to make a killing selling ERP out for gil in the game, so if you decide you want to role an ERP character but you want a reason to do it then justifying having to ERP with people you dont like can become a lucrative profession. This is just mainly an important footnote to be used for food for thought obviously.))

Generally, the more sexually tame (IE: The virgins or devote partners) will tend to have more rules and restrictions specific to them being in a relationship with specific people while characters who are promiscuous or loose will tend to have little if no rules when it comes to who you ERP or are in a relationship with.

With that said though, there is always the blacklist in the event someone is giving you more trouble because of IC relationships or ERP than it's worth.

I do this from time to time, usually through someplace not in the game to avoid anything spilling over and people getting the wrong idea--like you said I don't want to appear to be a cyber hound but I do enjoy my occasional errotic writing if only because Tarot has never, ever gotten deep enough (heh) into a relationship to actually share this kind of thing. I've been involved in RPs that had a pair of characters meet as children, grow up into young adults and become sweet-hearts and then proceed on to getting married and having kids. This is an RP I spent over half a decade involved in with the same RP partner. And yeah, we occasionally enjoy just writing a smut scene for the hell of it--just like in real life, every now and then the itch comes along and needs scratching, yeah? At least in this case it's cheaper since you don't have to buy pills and other things to avoid consequences!

The blacklist is a wondeful magical tool in the world of Eorzea that will do one much good!

Huh....neat topic, this.

Well, Steel personally enjoys her time in Ul'dah and all the delights it offers, both epicurian and carnal.  At least, that's the impression I get of the city is that it'd be a place where one could find a bowl of great curry and a spicy snuggle.

Being a born and bred Lominsan, her moral code is certainly looser than what would be considered carried by a realm's heroes.  If anything, she's probably not doing Adventurers any favors with regard to public perception because of her proclivities. ^^;

Yeah! All dat stuff above *flail* And to add a neat twist to the thread...

My boyfriend and I are currently long distance, and in a few months will be living together after he finishes getting situated in his new place. While our characters have been involved in an on again, off again relationship, we sometimes dabble in pure smut and certain RP for the sake of our own personal feelings.

Generally? I hate doing this in RP. I HATE mixing my personal feelings with my character and RP save for if something is testing my personal patience or boundaries. But I'm also not afraid to admit that my partner is the only one I'm comfortable engaging in this sort of thing with and I've met a number of others who have felt the same. It also helps that the characters are already attached, so this happens to be an added bonus.

While I've met a number of people supportive of this kind of thing, it's interesting to meet a handful over the years who look down on this even if the players are already OOCly involved. As if somehow that diminishes the flavor and sincerity of the RP.

On an out of character level, erotic role play (or smut), isn't SUPER important to me. Sure, I enjoy writing out for development sake, but I do not need it. I always give my role play partner the choice whether s/he wants to fade to black, or be descriptive. I've done role plays where it was fade to black, and assumed the characters were sexually intimate with each other, and it's fine. I won't be upset, or throw a fit, if there is a lack of writing out those scenes.

Now for erotic role playing in character;

History; Chika was forced to work in a brothel from the point she was seventeen, until she was around the age of twenty-four. How this came to be is her mother forced her into the line of work, because she caught Chika with a woman, and as the heir Chika was expected to have multiple breeding males, and produce the next generation of Ito, in which she would have to pick out an heir. From this experience she learned a multitude of things. One; that a lot of men that come in only care about getting off. They don't care about you, or what happens to you afterward, or how rough they are. No, they'll damn well beat you if they please. This is rather obvious, of course. Two; that line of work has its rather dark days. Days where you just wanted to end it all. Chika hit a lot of depression while being in a brothel. Partially due to the fact of social isolation. When people know what you you encounter others who have differing views on what you do. They either; want to be you, want to be with you, or they look down on you because you make your living taking it up the rear and should get a proper job. With that aside since she was forced to have sex with men, and do anything to keep them happy (to the extent that if she didn't she'd be beat), it turned her off to guys. It's why it is impossible for her to be in a relationship with a man, because she finds no arousal whatsoever when it comes to their bodies.

Views/thoughts on prostitution; This leads me into my other point. What does Chika think of prostitution. She once made her money from working in a brothel. She doesn't mind prostitutes in the least. Several role plays that Chika has been involved in included helping cheer up women who work in this profession, because two viewed themselves poorly because of their career. Often she tries to get to know the woman on a more deeper level, interested in more than just the looks. There have been several times she visited Towering Falcon's business. Actually that is where she met her current wife, and how their relationship came to be in the first place.

Views/thoughts on sex in a relationship, and it's importance; Sex in a relationship is rather important to Chika. To her it is a way to bond with your partner on several levels. From the obvious physical, to emotional with her partner and her experiencing pleasure and happiness at the same time. It is a way for her to feel desired, needed, wanted, loved. Chika knows that sex shouldn't be the cornerstone for a relationship, or be that important. Honestly, it is something she struggles with. While she disliked having sex with men, she had female clients too back then. Not as often, but a woman's touch and caress became absolutely addicting to her. I had once listed her Vice (on another thread) as lust. On her profile under the 'flaw' section it is listed that she is a sex addict. Intimacy is something she needs. This has lead to some challenging points in her life for she was once with someone who wasn't intimate with her for a while. That's not something she is use to, at all. It drove her insane with need, and it made her rather depressed, and she started to doubt if she was actually desired and needed.

Her wife understands this, and does her best to make Chika happy. Chika's sex addiction has been rather mellow since T'urnessa and her started seeing each other. Nessa has brought out a more romantic, and gentle side in her. She has been shown by Nessa that she can experience pleasure outside of sex. From stealing tender kisses, to holding hands, to cuddling. If you were to ever ask Chika her favorite part of her day she'll tell you. It's when Nessa is curled up with a good book, and reading, with Chika at her side cuddling her. Making her wife laugh, and smile, has become her new addiction, and interestingly enough it gives her enough pleasure. Now don't get me wrong, she isn't in a sexless relationship. The two have an active intimate life. Even when the role player, and I, cannot spare enough time for the couple we assume that they are physically intimate numerous times throughout the week. See Nessa is very shy in character, and suffers with self confidence and has a lack of self esteem. So when it comes to sex, she gets super nervous. This is also a woman who is too shy to change in front of Chika. Every time before they get intimate, Chika always asks her wife if she's okay with it. If it is something that Nessa needs, and desires, rather than her just focusing on Chika's feelings. This is what has curbed Chika's sexual appetite. She'd willing sacrifice her own needs to make her wife happy. If that means just a night of cuddling, and reading in bed, so be it.

Chika would never force anything onto her wife. Even with her ex partners she didn't. What happened, happened. Sure, Chika is not without her kinks, but she'd never force is on her partner or lover. She always leaves it up to whom she is with on what they want to do.

Dominance; Dislikes male domination, but absolutely frakin' ADORES when a woman dominates her. Chika is naturally submissive in bed, because with an overall dominate personality she doesn't want that role in bed too. With her wife, however, she does take up the leadership/dominance role, and that is okay to her by all means because she is doing what makes her lover happy. Chika has had her fair share of experience with dominate men who push things too far. Not saying that women do not do that either, but with her taste for a man obviously lacking she would want someone who is casual and relaxed if she ever was single again

That, however, is enough from me since I put in a huge chunk ^^; heh thanks for reading

Sexuality, not only the act of sex but how one views it and themselves within the spectrum, affects us in real life and thus it makes sense that it would affect our characters as well. That being said, I've thought about how each of my characters would react in different situations from playful flirting to full blown dashing to an inn room. It gives them dimension and makes it fun to play the different aspects within each character.

Eresh has been limited in her sexual interactions due to her work coming first. Many a men aren't interested in a woman who spends more of her time in a library or on a dig site than she does with him. Now that her profession has changed and she's spending more time around people, especially one couple within her company, she's beginning to wonder what's out there. Thoughts that really hadn't crossed her mind much before are playing a bigger role in her day to day so it's changing how she views it. I even offered the character to Grace for a little fun just to shake things up and see what happens.

Adelina is the complete opposite. Sex is what got her where she is. She's a courtesan and a brothel owner, sex is her business. She can be anyone you want her to be inside of what you pay for but outside of it, she's more untouchable. Sex and relationships don't have the same meaning for her that they do Eresh. It's not emotional for her and she doesn't have the desire for a true relationship because she's secretly afraid it would take everything she's worked so hard for away.

As for ERP, I've done it but it isn't a focus of RP for me. Fade to black works just as well most times but sometimes you need that little extra to make a connection or bring the story full circle. So long as the whole thing stays IC, I'm happy and willing to ERP to progress the story.
