Cavistus Posted January 21, 2015 Share #77 Posted January 21, 2015 Holy sweet fuck, I got in. There was literally a 30 second window before the servers went down. I had to spam the create character button. 1 Link to comment

Sorora Posted January 21, 2015 Share #80 Posted January 21, 2015 I think the problems to the server issue is a mix of everything involved. On one hand, you have people who leave themselves AFK'd for long periods of time, for whatever reason it is they feel the need to remain logged in even after they've gone off to do other things. One the other hand, you have a sever that just has a lot of people on it. It's been in my experience with just about every other game that I've played, heavy populated servers are just difficult to get on, even if at all. More server space costs money, too. It's not just something that they can click a button for and make happen. It could be that they are perhaps working on a fix and have been really hush about it. You never know! But it also has to be a smart decision on their end to expand the server sizes. They'll have to do it for all of their servers. It ends up being a wasted effort (and money) once population dies down a bit. You kind of have to look at it from their perspective. On their end there are lots of other servers that are unoccupied/doesn't have a problem with capacity. With that being said, there are also players who have alts that they don't play as well. Those also take up server space. And with the new patch already here and a patch and an expansion on the near horizon, there are just going to be more people logged in. I think it's a shame that new players can't get onto Balmung to be on the server that they want for RP, but there isn't much you can do about a heavily populated server, unless SE decides that it is something they can fix. Another part of the problem, that is since it's not a dedicated server AND it's one of the legacy servers, you have both masses of RPers and masses of Non RPers on the same server. The best solution for now is to just be patient. It's frustrating, yes. It took me about a week to get on Balmung when I first came to FFXIV back in August. It'll just probably be less do-able during patch/expansion release. Another quick edit: I want our community to get larger and I want other RPers to be able to join us too! Link to comment

I'm curious what games these are, because I've never seen an MMO completely lock character creation on a server, regardless of its population. Link to comment
Kamome Posted January 22, 2015 Share #82 Posted January 22, 2015 Eek wait a second--alts take up server space but they don't prevent new people from making characters, right? That's just the number of people currently online? (;゜0゜) Link to comment

That's just the number of people currently online? (;゜0゜) I wouldn't worry about it. I'd wager it's a mixture of the login server getting hammered at all times of day from Balmungites wanting to get in, the priorities for that queue being something like this : > Existing Character > Transfer From Other Server > New Character In addition to Server Wonkiness that can disconnect people, adding to the Login queue. Permalogins may affect login server in a way we haven't anticipated. If there's one thing I've learned at my job is that you never know what could end up interacting with one another when it comes to computers. Link to comment
