Character Journals

I know it's been a thread before, but I'm looking for some current journalers!

I'm curious how many folks out there have in-character journals. I like reading them (and writing them), and would like to link them if they're active on my own journal so I can check in on them! (Something silly I like to do from back in my website-making days.)

So, in-character writers, show me your stuff! Tumblr, Wordpress, Forum post, whatever. :) Plug it! Talk about it!

(Feel free to move this if it's in the wrong forum. >> I'm sleepy.)

ICly V'arimbeh runs her own Newspaper which has new Issues published to her Tumblr account, which also documents her life. I don't post that much, but when I do its a lot of posts at once. I don't know why I don't que things, but thats effort so I just floood all the words. (I was actually in the process of writing up a new post on there but got distracted with this lovely site)

I do not keep a journal, but I guess I do something similar to that in my RPC thread here with vignettes into my characters private thoughts and life.  I know a lot of people use other websites and services (tumblr, et al.) but I just keep it simple with an RPC thread ^_^

I should probably continue writing Kurt's journal xD

Yes you should! And you should link me so I can read it! :)

There's nothing wrong with journaling via a thread here or on a guild site - I just am hoping to get a collection of journals I can visit and follow and enjoy reading. ^^

I agree! Everyone should totally have an IC Journal of sometype. I love reading about other characters and what they did. I'll even give cookies to people who link their Journal. @w@

This is oddly timed as I had just opened your character journal earlier this week, :o. I'll get mine to you once I start up again; the need for writing it out has been brewing over the last few days, :tonberry:.

I do need to kick mine back up again, but I'm not able to remove older entries and the like.

I dunno...journals are a weird thing. On the one hand, I like to write them, but on the other hand it just seems like these sorts of interactions would be more fun with people than written out in a solo story.

Except that sometimes it's real pain the in the ass to find these people for the stories with v.v True story that.

Books of Xavarian

I've been trying to keep his journal up to date, though I'm about 7 or 8 entries behind, currently. I have a lot of the notes though! Just a matter of writing them out onto the forums.

Regardless, this thing is still active. It is.. a collection of notes, occasionally riddles, and actual entries based on IC events that have happened to the character. So it is very much a character journal, it's also a real IC item, and something I emote him writing in a lot during conversation. It's much less a collection of additional stories, like what some people do, and much more what my character is actually writing about when he suddenly pulls out his elaborate tome ICly and starts scribbling stuff down. Thus, if you meet my character ICly, there's a good chance you'll show up in there somewhere.

... eventually. Entries aren't correlated to the irl time I actually post them, but they ARE all in chronological order, so at least there's that. *lays down*

I keep journals for all of my characters, but I do not share them on public sites. I can't really see why anyone would read them when they do not know my characters, and I am stupidly shy with my writing. That and the risk of metagaming.. Though I have considered keeping a copy in google docs of them so that I could link them to people outside of my FC if I was brave enough.

If I opt to go with that I'll send you a PM.

I've thought of making a journal to keep a running tab on all of the stuff that happens in Chachan's life. Never really followed through on it.

I mean, I'd want to go whole hog on it if I did. I'd need, like, the Mr. Saturn font from Earthbound and a whole mess of little doodles to intersperse throughout the pieces before I felt it was fitting the character. Of course, I could always just describe the goofy little pictures and such like I do in my little pen-pal thing I'm doing...

... Wait, what's my excuse for not doing it again?

Seriously, I might start one, though it makes me wish I had started one right from the get-go. It seems awkward to suddenly start a journal in media res when he technically had a little book to write names in right at the beginning. And retconning some journal entries sounds difficult since I can't quite recall a lot of the details of previous events - including some rather serious character building ones like his two little temper tantrums.

My character's journal can be found on the forums (link in my signature), but I also host her entries on a tumblr account I've created for her.

I see first-person journals as a means of digging deeper into my characters' psyches and figuring out exactly how they tick. I enjoy seeing Avis develop gradually over time, and I use her journals to try to make her as real and human and flawed as possible.

That and the fact that journalling really rounds off the immersive MMO experience. I love the FFXIV world, and making Avis an avid diarist (though I'm severely backlogged by now) is my own way of appreciating it. (:

I will sadly admit that my own journal thread has lapsed for a while. I have this great transitional scene all mapped out in my head, with multiple layers of commentary, but every time I think, "I should update this thing", my brain becomes a cornucopia of All The Things I Can Do Besides Updating The Journal.

Of course, I think it may be because usually, I have a new song for every one, and thus the journal becomes my character's songbook for those "Hey Bard, sing us a song!" moments (thus making it useful), but this piece I had planned is about a developmental story instead. I do think that's the block.

My character, D'aito Kuji, has a kind of "adventurer's newsletter" that she publishes semi-regularly excerpts of which appear on her tumblr.

She makes observations, gives advice, and speculates about the news of the day and the wider world.  She is especially keen to publish the lives of the Miqo'te she encounters with her "Miqo'te Appreciation Posts."

I am trying to post more frequently but I'm not in-game as much as I'd like so I don't always have anything to say.  I also try not to reblog things OOC but that's very challenging.

When you are exploring a character's inner thoughts, reflections, and her self when away from public eye, its tough to fit that into RP with other people :)

Inner life and outer life are not often the same.

Thank you all for sharing your links. I finally got through to them all so now I have a nice little list on my Links page to click through. ^^ (That said, if anyone doesn't want their link there, just poke me and I'll remove it. It's for my convenience more than anything since I fail at bookmarking. >>)

Like some have said, the real enjoyment many get from journaling IC seems to be just getting into their character's head. Another reason I like it personally is it helps me remember what has happened in RP. Especially when there is a lot going on! I try not to make the journals simply documenting things, of course, as that can feel boring to me, but its still very useful!

But why do we share them? Why not keep them to ourselves? Hmm. I guess I just like the idea that someone could be reading it. Even if they aren't!

Meta gaming is a risk with journaling (as can be a revealing wiki), however it's easy to simply say [wait, you can't know that, we've never talked about it], but I usually trust folks to know not to meta.

Looking forward to some reading :3

Anyone else, feel free to share more~
