Ul'dah and its cultural stock in coin

Ain't their fault you were late for a plot!

Also, to contribute to the thread, if only slightly: I will happily, dare I say gleefully, impress my values, and see no problem with other characters doing so.

Personally, burn the city down and we're not going to lose anything of value. I used to think "but we'd lose the Flames" but after the ABSOLUTELY IDIOTIC way they handled 2.4 I'm like... fuck that city and why couldn't Dalamud fall on it instead of Mor Dhona.

Like, legit, I can think of nothing that is remotely redeeming about it, whereas I can at least think of some redeeming values for every other city (except Ishgarde).

What I said about people impressing their RL values on the city, mm? :P

In Gridania, there are conjurers refusing to heal a 12 year old girl because "the Elementals said so". Limsa Lominsa is a city of pirates (you know, rapists and murderers). I'm only pointing out the bad things here, for those two cities.

Limsa Lominsa is also a home to people who slit the throats of those rapists and murderers in their sleep.

Ul'dah, as far as I'm aware, does not have any similar luxury.

only if said raping and murdering goes against the code (which it doesn't state whether it does or not either way.)

I should like to point out that the majority of the Sultansworn are in the pockets of the Monetarists, which is in fact the driving point behind the PLD quest conflict. The Flames are, for the most part, held up as being a largely upright group because they answer to Raubahn. It's why the Monetarists hate them.

As far as the stuff at the end of 2.4, the reason why a certain individual wasn't shot on sight was because it was kept at the top level of the Flames so as not to incite a panic.

To be fair, those are crimes that'd happen in most cities, except maybe Gridania since they don't have hints of that... at all, which is more disturbing than anything (also rapin' and murderin', I'm fairly sure, would be a crime handled by the Yellowjackets moreso than the dudes of the Dutiful Sisters).

Still, I expounded on that whole "fuck Ul'dah" thing and it's primarily because of the MSQ. Typically if your story makes me want to headbutt everything in close vicinity it is not a good way to present your city.

There are rapists and murders in Gridania too, unfortunately. Toto-Rak used to be a prison specifically for Gridania's worst criminals, such as rapists, murderers, arsonists, and poachers. And in the latest Moogle Delivery quest there's a couple Wood Wailers who... erm... wish to forcefully elicit favors from a Keeper Miqo'te. Evil people and people who do evil things are in every city. No city is without some pretty horrible sins and sinners.

I think what makes Ul'dah stand out so much to a Western audience is that it's society is relatable or at the very least recognizably similar to our own to some degree. Ul'dah is a Capitalist nation where the top 1% controls 99% of the wealth. There's a ruler, be that monarch or president, who is checked by a council or congress who is funded in large part by the top 1%. Everyone has the opportunity to achieve wealth and prosperity, but few ever actually do. So I think as a Western audience we really hone in on Ul'dah and scrutinize its flaws more than we do the other nations.

Thought poachers was kill on sight/capture, and I did MDQ first day of patch so I don't remember much of it. (I love MDQ).

And for your second point, it doesn't help that MSQ concentrates on Ul'dah in a very unproportional manner. Other than the lead up to Leviathan and Ramuh, it's pretty much been Ul'dah and its relations to Mor Dhona. Whereas if you never want to level Rogue, you're not gonna see the Bloody Executioners much.
