I'm rather new myself, just been here a couple of weeks, but as I understand it Balmung is going to be closed for the foreseeable future because it's just so densely populated that it will take a long time for the population to reach the levels Squenix wants it at. Since it was closed, Mateus has definitely grown. The RPC linkpearl is very friendly and there's always people on. I transferred onto Mateus from Balmung when the closing first happened and in just that short time have seen a noticeable growth. Ultimately to transfer or to make a new character is a decision you'll have to make yourself since it's your money, but I do think the server is at least worth checking out. Edit: Cynnie makes a good point about transfer bonuses. We don't know what servers will have free transfers off of Balmung yet, Mateus could very well be one of them. Wait for that at least before deciding to transfer (I think it will be with Stormblood launch)?

Huh, nothing ice on Red Mage. There were a few attacks in the stream that looked like ice spears though. I guess they were holy magic maybe?

Once I get the Mammet based on Vivi from FFIX I fully intend to use him.

This may have been pointed out before, but I just got the Encyclopaedia Eorzea today and noticed on page 47 it says Sharlayan was founded when Archon Nyunkrepf led people away from the chaos of Gyr Abania. The Red Mage info on the website does not actually say Ala Mhigo, just Gyr Abania, so it may be the Red Mages were part of Nyunkrepf's group that went to Sharlayan, thus explaining the RDM aesthetic being more fancy than you'd expect from Ala Mhigo? Though truth be told I don't expect that, since the expansion will actually be going to Ala Mhigo so a Job from there would make sense.

If we are to assume Hydaelyn is about the same size as Earth, would it be the distance from Europe to Japan?

Surrounded by Elezen as they are, I named Jeanne under the impression Elezen naming conventions would rub off on Ishgardian Hyur. Now that I've actually been to Coerthas though, I haven't noticed many French-sounding Hyur, so I suppose it's still normal Hyur names for them? I have another quick question. Or well, more just clarifying to make sure I understand things right? Is this accurate? -Hydaelyn the Mothercrystal is located in the core of the planet. -Zodiark was ejected from the planet and became the moon. -The Calamities are the Ascians trying to get Zodiark to regain his power?

This will be a problem for sure, though hopefully it'll work itself out in the end. When WoW started up with their boost tokens, it was a nightmare as a healer when all these tanks came out of no where. :dazed: I'll attempt to be optimistic about it though. I already know the class I'm using and plan to take some time to work out the kinks/seek advice before I throw myself into anything that could get others killed. :thumbsup: Well as of Legion, boosting in WoW automatically puts you into a trial that teaches you the abilities of your class and slowly unlocks them one by one. XIV has the Hall of the Novice as an equivalent so I wouldn't be too concerned.

This. There's so many ridiculous and downright unnecessary filler/fetch quests that I have alts at level 1 that I've been waiting to buy these potions for in order to skip that crap I just beat Titan today and the entire sequence leading up to him, with the banquet at Costa del Sol, was downright painful filler. I can't imagine doing it on more than one character. So yeah these can only be a good thing.

just a reminder the ring only lasts till level 30 so the last 20 levels will only benefit from the earrings Oh yeah I'm aware, but it's better than not having it at all.

As a new player I doubt I'll use them, if I want to level a job then I'll want to go through that job's story too. I'll have the 30%xp ring and soon the 50% xp earrings. Glad these potions are there for people who want them though.

I didn't quite understand the explanation of the Red Mage's gauge in the stream, but seeing that video makes it more clear. You build up black and white mana with spells, then jump into melee range to spend it with sword attacks. Cool!

And what many of us are saying is: YES, we need a new RP Server, BUT we would like it be officially sanctioned. That is the big difference between what you are comparing our situation to. Those servers are official RP servers designated by the company, if that were the case here, we would just choose a second server to occupy and be done with it, RP tagged servers draw RPers on their own, so it would make things a lot easier for future RPers. My post was in response to OP who as I understand it wants everything on one single server. I'm not objecting to multiple RP-tagged servers at all, though I also don't think that's likely given what little I've come to learn about the dev team in my short time playing. I'm just saying the notion that if everyone isn't on one server then RP won't "work" is demonstrably untrue.

The idea that you need everyone on one server for RP to be healthy is simply untrue. WoW has two thriving RP servers, Wyrmrest Accord and Moon Guard, as well as several medium-to-smaller servers with a handful of active guilds, even if they're not on the scale of the big two. The RP scene in WoW is mostly split between two servers, not one megaserver, and neither of them somehow suffer for it. There are probably other MMOs with multiple healthy RP servers but my only experiences are with WoW and FFXIV so they're all I can accurately talk about. The fact of the matter is we're in a situation where the "Wyrmrest Accord" that is Balmung now needs a "Moon Guard" at its side, because Balmung is locked for the foreseeable future. New players that Stormblood will bring have no way to get into Balmung at all, so if they want to RP they're simply out of luck with the current situation.

While I like the idea for this FC quite a bit, it's probably not the best fit for my character. However, what I quoted here sounds wonderful! I know I'd attend!

I have to vote for Mateus too, and not just because I spent money transferring yesterday. I've been pleasantly surprised by the community since I arrived. Small, yes, but friendly and active for its size. That said, I'm not sure how well the idea of designating a secondary RP server - no matter which it is - will go over with the "losing" servers. Certainly new players without a stake in it can be directed there, but people on Faerie and such probably won't want to pay to transfer over. I only transferred because I was new so didn't have any roots established on Balmung (well also because my slightly-newer-than-me friend missed his opportunity to get on Balmung but on Mateus we can play together).

Those links are wonderful Sounsyy, thank you! I have another question that may seem a bit silly. What does the patron deity chosen at character creation actually mean as far as lore? I chose Azeyma pretty much at random when I started since I didn't know much of anything about the setting, but my character is from Coerthas so would that cause problems with Ishgard's devotion to Halone? Or is the deity choice basically just a birthstone without much to it?

I also just moved over. Having just started I wasn't really entrenched in Balmung yet, and didn't have any housing or excess money to lose. I'm in full support of helping Mateus!

I'd happily do my part in getting Mateus off the ground as a secondary RP server. I just started about a week ago, so I don't have any deep ties to Balmung, or a house or excess money to lose, and my friend who was locked out of transferring to Balmung by this closure (his necessary "character must exist for three days" being during the downtime) would be able to transfer onto there with me so we could play together. $18 is a block but Mateus has my support and very real consideration in hopping over. :thumbsup:

I think that's the biggest downside to all this. Was this lockdown mentioned anywhere so that people could be aware it was coming? Having some heads-up beforehand probably would've helped a lot with this sort of "fallout" for the decision. I didn't hear a peep about it.

This is...disappointing. I have a friend who started the same day as me but couldn't get into Balmung, and was going to transfer once his character was three days old. That third day was during the downtime, and now this.
