  1. Well, first of all -- hello! o/ Welcome to the game, and to the RP community here! Both are certainly overwhelming enough on their own, so please feel free to ask as many questions as you'd like! Everyone here seems extremely ready to answer them all! :3 Of course, a good idea is to play the game itself a bit. The beginning MSQ does a pretty good job of creating a foundation of lore knowledge, and if there are any specific areas you wanna learn more about, there are usually a handful of side quests there that go into greater detail! That said, lemme try and throw in my two cents on these questions~ This is also a pretty useful guide covering some of the basics of RP in FFXIV! Some of it might apply to any kind of online RP in general, but there's a lot of helpful info in here regarding the terms that FFXIV roleplayers may use, and stuff like that! It's a pretty well organized google doc so you can skip around and see if anything helps you out! ^^ https://tinyurl.com/FFXIVRPNewbieFAQ And as always, please keep asking questions! We're all here to help! Not at all! You /do/ get plenty of useful perks as you level up and progress through the game that will help you out as a roleplayer (in addition to simply learning more of the lore) but it's by no means necessary! Once you hit level 15 in the main storyline quests... You can unlock glamours in Vesper Bay (near Horizon in Western Thanalan) which allows you to pretty much illusion your equipped armor into whatever other clothes/armor you want it to look like! This lets you walk around in a tuxedo, or a bathing suit, or a full-body chicken suit while actually wearing proper armor so it's really helpful to have for RP reasons! You can visit the other city-states whenever you want, as long as you attune to the main aetheryte in the plaza! This is helpful for obvious reasons lol, each city can be a hub for finding RP whether it's directly with people there (such as the Quicksands in Ul'Dah, which is usually packed full of roleplayers just vibing) or it's from seeing advertisements in the shout chat (the orange/brown chat text) where people post ads for Free Companies, events, and venues. Once you visit each of the 3 main cities, you can do a short side quest in each one to unlock the residential area - this is the player housing! Even if you don't plan to visit RP venues like nightclubs or bars, it's always helpful to at least get the areas unlocked. You never know when you find an interesting RP partner and they might offer to write a scene in their apartment-turned-flower-shop or whatever else! You also unlock new areas as you progress through the story, so if you're still an early sprout, you might have to miss out on RP opportunities because they're in areas you can't access yet. There's a 4th residential area called Shirogane and it's only unlocked once you get into Stormblood, and each expac comes with new cities and new open world locations. However, despite this, I've noticed a lot of the bigger RP events still take place in beginner-friendly areas! So don't worry, there will be PLENTY you can do early on! I started RPing in the game when I was around Level 20, so I could only access the early ARR areas and I don't remember anyone giving me flack for it! Not at all! Free Companies can actually be SUPER useful when you're first starting out! I might recommend looking for non-RP, newbie gamer focused FCs to begin with -- they usually have buffs (which apply to every FC member) that boost your EXP earnings, or reduce teleportation fees, or a few other little helpful things for starting out! And FC buffs aside, it's usually full of people who are more than willing to help you through the game by partying up for dungeons, maybe crafting you high-quality gear for free, stuff like that! Of course, you can always start looking for a RP-related FC right off the bat! But the huge gaming FCs are sooo helpful and can essentially speedrun you through the MSQ. While you can only be a member of one FC at a time, you can freely leave and join them as you want, so you're never stuck with one forever if you don't want to be! Also it might take you a little while of browsing through RP FCs to find one you'd wanna try joining, so another good thing about the big gaming FCs is that people join/leave all the time so there's no pressure on you to stay. Pop in for the buffs, and dip when you find something else you wanna join. Honestly what you're doing here is a good first step! Just literally getting into the community, meeting people, asking questions, etc etc! There are tons of discord servers that serve as networking hubs to find other roleplayers, there's a huge community of FFXIV roleplayers on Twitter and Tumblr, and there are tons of open RP opportunities advertised in shout chats! These events are usually pretty newbie-friendly, no pressure, you can just show up and everyone's just RPing with everyone else so you can hang out and lurk and see what everyone's doing, or jump in and try to interact with people yourself! People also tend to put RP info in their search info -- you can right-click > examine on a player and click a little speech bubble symbol near the top. They might put a little blurb about their character here but there's a harsh 60-character limit so most of the time people just link to a carrd, which is a really helpful thing to have once you've got your character figured out! If you see someone with an interesting carrd or interesting info, you can definitely reach out and let them know their character seems cool!
  2. Hey there! Your character sounds super interesting and your OOC stuff sounds like we could vibe as writing partners! Our boundaries are extremely similar and I'm also a EST late night-owl. Kiara grew up an orphan rogue in Limsa and now travels around as an adventurer/thief-for-hire disguised as a street performer, so she's a bit morally grey but has a soft spot for helping out commonfolk and loves to meet people from all walks of life, so it could be fun to see what dynamic they might have if they interacted! I'm Kiara Nocturne on Mateus, and my discord is lil nosferatu#1313 if you ever wanna set something up or bounce around some ideas!
  3. Aww, your character sounds absolutely adorable and I'd love to RP with you sometime! Kiara is also easily excitable and a rogue / street performer from Limsa, so having a friend who also isn't afraid to do a little stabby-stabby would be awesome~!!
  4. @MikeRaffone No worries! And pfft, whether they're silly or not, you should ask them anyways! How else are you supposed to learn? :3 Either way, do feel free to message me on here for any more you have, but I agree! I think the best way to figure it out is just to jump into it, and don't be afraid to make some mistakes or slip-ups along the way!
  5. Hello! o/ Congrats on taking the first steps, of course! Social anxiety is a bitch, and most of us have it too, so no worries! At the end of the day we're all just people getting together to play virtual dolls with each other in a video game, so don't be intimidated to go all in! :3 Also, they did say they're eventually going to implement a cross-datacenter travel feature, so worst case scenario you can't find ANYTHING on your home server, you could always travel over to Crystal DC and find some RP when you're in the mood! Outside the Game: Discord servers are probably the biggest thing right now for meeting other RPers since they usually have channels for posting RP bios / carrds / profiles and people can just scroll through to see who they'd wanna interact with. So I'd maybe google some ffxiv rp servers, there might even be specific ones for your datacenter! :3 There's also a TON of roleplayers with Tumblr blogs, so you could probably search "ffxiv adamantoise rp" on there and find some stuff! Twitter also has a huge community of FFXIV RPers on there, you could search there too! You could also try checking out the FFXIV Recruitment subreddit, you might find some RP groups from Adamantoise advertising in there! Even if they're from other servers in your datacenter, you could still hop over and interact with them! :3 In-Game: FCs are probably your best bet at finding RP groups! I know on Crystal, people will post ads for their FCs in the shout chats of the major cities throughout the day, so keep an eye out in case you see an ad for a RP group that sounds interesting to you! Even if you're already in an FC with your friends or something, most RP groups are totally open to including you in RP activities without actually joining! ^-^ Most ads will say something like "whisper for more info" or maybe even have a discord server link, so you can always just send them a tell (or hop into the server!) and say you'd love to be a contact! Party Finder is also a good way to see advertisements for FCs or even just RP venues such as bars, nightclubs, restaurants/taverns, etc! These are generally open RP places, so maybe go check some out if they sound interesting, and you might be able to meet some new RP friends! The hardest part is getting yourself out there at first, but once you start meeting a couple people, they'll likely be able to recommend more places to you, and you'll eventually find more and more!
  6. Hey there! o/ You're always free to bug me for any RP questions! If you've got a discord, you can add me there, or message me on here or whatever's best for ya! :3 I've been RPing for like... 15ish years now? >_>;; And specifically in FFXIV for a couple years, so I'm not an expert or anything but I've seen my fair share and would love to help you out however I can! This definitely depends on the situation, the type of RP environment you're in, and your own preferences (as well as the other person's preferences!). Let's say you go to some kind of open RP venue, such as a bar/tavern/restaurant or an event like a beach party -- here, there's really no need for OOC communication before jumping into RP interaction! People will usually throw on their RP tag in front of their nameplate, and just be in-character in the chat. In these types of environments, it's totally okay to just hop in with RP! Now, if you see like a small group of people RPing somewhere and you'd like to know if you could join in or interact with them, it's always just polite and cautious to send a /tell and make sure they're okay with it! Usually they will be, if they're RPing in say chat, but it's polite to ask since you don't know if they have specific plans for where the story is headed. Situations in which you do a lot more talking OOC with someone is typically when you're browsing through people's RP carrds/profiles and trying to set up a possible connection/RP session with them. Especially if you're trying to 1x1 roleplay with someone, it's probably best that you guys at least establish a little bit of OOC communication! At least just enough to know each other's basic preferences and boundaries. Personally I like to even establish some kind of basic starting plot point with someone as well, such as "oh, I saw you mention in your character bio about being wanted in this city, maybe mine has been hired to collect your bounty and has tracked you to your current location?" These are often called hooks in the FFXIV RP community, and many roleplayers will even offer multiple hooks on their RP profile! The amount of OOC communication you do with someone completely depends on the both of you. I've met RPers that I talked to extensively OOC, I've met RPers that I exchanged only a couple DMs with before jumping into a RP. Some people I've talked to for years and we've STILL never actually gotten around to roleplaying lmao, and some I don't think I've ever actually spoken to them OOC at all, and have only ever interacted with them in-character! So it really just depends. I'm chatty OOC, my character is chatty, I kinda just go with the vibes. Since everyone is different when it comes to this, the best thing would be to just go with the flow. Once you start getting the hang of it, you'll find out what you prefer to do more, and you'll probably start leaning more towards RPers who share that preference. Typically RPers will not automatically know your name, and you're not expected to know their name. There are exceptions, of course -- maybe someone's character is a renowned performer, a notorious bandit, or some kind of political figure. If their character is well-known, it could be reasonable that your character knows who they are. There are also times where someone's in-game name might not actually be their character's name! They might be named Lucifer Morningstar, but perhaps they don't go by that name in RP or strictly go by an alias. Or maybe they just don't wanna pay $10 for a name change. Either way, the safest bet is to make your character have no idea what their character's name is, until they introduce themselves through RP. I've seen plenty of venues that use /say and plenty that do /tells !! Personally I've noticed that the bartenders will speak up first, whether welcoming you in say chat and offering to get you something, or sending a tell, and I just go with whichever method they use! If it's an especially busy bar, the say chat might be FLOODED and moving extremely quickly so it could be really hard for them to keep up with checking to see if anyone's talking to them, so I'm sure tells are more easily manageable, but if they RP at me in say chat then that's where I respond! And no, generally you wouldn't automatically know their name unless they introduced themselves or another character introduced them (i.e, "go see Ashe at the bar for drinks!") I think it just mostly depends on your RP environment! Say chat is usually the default, especially at a big public venue, but keep in mind it is public and anyone nearby you can see/read what's going on. This could include people who want to jump into the RP (whether wanted or unwanted) as well as non-RP players that wanna interject with commentary (doesn't happen often, but I've seen a few instances where someone wanders around like a heckler or a troll for lulz). If you're interacting 1x1 with someone or you're in a small group, you guys can party up and then RP in party chat so it's closed to the public. Usually if my bf and I go to a big public venue, we RP with each other in party chat so we don't miss each other's posts, but interact or talk to everyone else in say chat (kinda like whispering to your date when you're out somewhere!). Also keep in mind, the radius for say chat is pretty small and there have been times I didn't realize I was missing like half the RP posts in a group RP scene because I was juuuuust out of range. So using party chat helps with that too, if people are spread out a little bit. It all depends! You can certainly go to RP events and meet people and go from there, or you can find people outside the game and form OOC connections that then lead to in-game RP! You can do a little of both! Personally in my own experience, I've found that meeting people through in-game RP first leads to more casual, short-term RP contacts, while finding people outside the game and communicating OOC first tends to develop into more long-term connections. But there's always exceptions, and everyone is different! Plenty of people STRICTLY only meet people in-game through RP and have their whole friend list filled up, while others strictly do it the other way! You just kinda gotta feel for people's vibes, look around, maybe try both methods and see which one fits your style and preferences more!
  7. Aww, that's very sweet of you to be willing to let other groups use your housing for events! I'm not sure about your datacenter, but in the Crystal DC a lot of venues allow other groups to use their spaces like this, so I'm sure there's a need for it! I would try looking up discord servers for your datacenter specifically, I came across a few links after googling "ffxiv twintania discord server" and "ffxiv light dc discord server"! There's also several FFXIV subreddits you could post to, and both Twitter & Tumblr have a pretty sizable FFXIV community as well! If all else fails, you can always go into shout chat and advertise your venue for any groups that would be interested in holding events there!

    G'day

    Personally I've never roleplayed here on the forum, it doesn't seem nearly active enough to really host storylines with people. ^_^;; I think most people who do pop in here every so often simply use it as a way of meeting some other people OOC and either joining discord servers, following tumblrs/twitters, or meeting up in-game, things like that. At least this is what I've gathered from what I've seen!
  9. Hello, and welcome! Also, congrats on getting into Balmung! Back when I started, it was like semi-permanently congested lmao, so it always sounds like a great accomplishment to get on there! I feel you on the not having all your glams, emotes, MSQ progression, etc. @_@ But hopefully the Datacenter Travel/Visit feature will help out! I know I made a copy of my character on Aether DC to play with a friend over there, and it just felt so weird not having all my fancy things. ;-; This was also my first game that I roleplayed in, so it definitely takes some adjustment going from forums and multi-para posts to in-game rp! If you ever need any help with that, just gimme a holler! =u=/

    G'day

    Hello, and welcome!
  11. Under construction! This is where we'll summarize some backstory as well as keep an ongoing journal of significant RP events that shape our crew!
  12. The following are the mostly OOC rules and guidelines we've set up so far, and these apply to all of our group's community spaces - the discord server, the CWLS, FC chat, here on this forum, etc. They were designed to just be the bare basics, and we reserve the right to edit or add to the list at any point we feel it's necessary. ^^ DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE OOC. This includes, but is not limited to, any kind of behavior to intentionally insult or disrespect another person. Racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, transphobia, etc is absolutely not welcome here. You're entitled to your opinions and beliefs, but you're /not/ entitled to disrespect other people because of it. We're LGBT+ friendly and always aim for having a space that's welcoming to everyone. That said, if anyone or anything ever makes you feel uncomfortable, please feel free to bring it to either myself or Bouviere! We will do our best to find a solution and/or take care of the issue. KEEP IT CLEAN. Keep public chats - including the discord server, CWLS, and FC chat - free from sexually explicit content. Jokes are generally fine but be aware that everyone's comfort level is different, so try to know your audience. Absolutely no sexually explicit images, screenshots, or gifs anywhere in the server, please. Tasteful or artistic nude gposes are fine, but this is not the place to dump your porn. BE MATURE. If any group claims to be drama-free, they're lying through their teeth. We instead expect everyone here to, when a situation occurs, act like adults and attempt to sort things out - even if it's simply agreeing to disagree. Bou and I are both here to help mediate between parties should they have difficulty in finding middle ground, but we'll generally leave you to handle your own business unless the situation is affecting the overall group. We cannot and will not force anyone to like someone else, you're free to hate them all you'd like, but you're expected to be civil around each other in community spaces. IC ACTIONS HAVE IC CONSEQUENCES. Sometimes our in-character behavior will illicit in-character behaviors from others that we might not have expected. Don't have your character act in certain ways if you as the writer cannot handle the possible IC consequences your character may face.
  13. I. Basic Info Character: Kiara Nocturne Linkshells: n/a Server: Mateus, Crystal DC Kiara's Carrd More than happy to RP over Discord for people in other datacenters! II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Medium to Heavy preferred, but I don't mind light/casual here and there! Views on RP combat and injuries: Would rather avoid a lot of full-scale combat within RP, a single scene may be okay! And I'm fine with getting injuries! I'd like to discuss it beforehand though if it's anything serious! ^^ Views on IC romance: Perfectly fine with it, however when Kiara is taken, she's faithful. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Love them! Need more of them! Views on lore: I personally try to stay lore-compliant for consistence but I don't care if rp partners break or bend lore! Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): They're fine? xD? III. Other Info Country: USA Timezone: EST Contact info: you can find me on Discord @ lil nosferatu#1313 !!

    This was fun to make! x3
  15. Thank you! ALSO-- I love the video that image is from. x'D I just watched it the other night. Ooh, awesome! I feel like I'm fumbling around and probably doing things that come off as noobish. x'D But ah well, it's still been fun so far! And I'm glad to hear the community here is so nice, everyone I've spoken to so far from FFXIV has been really great! But thank you, and sure! I'll keep ya in mind!
  16. Character(s) Kiara Nocturne (Mateus, Coeurl) A charismatic, spunky Miqo'te rogue/ninja seeking adventure and entertainment. She has a knack for befriending all types of people, and is driven by reckless curiosity, often finding herself collecting a vast array of information, as well as gossip and rumors. Her loyalty might falter if her own hide is at risk, or even if she thinks it would be more interesting to switch sides, and generally has no qualms about playing double agent. Despite her bubbly, lax, and outgoing personality, her moral compass is pretty broken and she thrives on causing mischief and chaos. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy) I'm fine with the whole spectrum! I think it depends on the situation, but I love quick, casual banter as much as long, in-depth storylines! Views on RP combat and injuries I'm not big into rp fighting, but I don't mind letting my babies get injured. Any permanent damage or scars should be discussed beforehand, though! ;w; Views on IC romance Oh lord, I'm a hopeless romantic. ;w; I love writing cute, fluffy, and even angsty ships. But it's gotta be built up and developed naturally between our characters, otherwise it feels too forced and inorganic. If our muses have chemistry, though, sure! Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc) Just as good! I love having my muse develop friendships! :3 I usually don't do rp families, but I'm not against them... just a little more cautious, I guess? But even brotherly/fatherly/motherly figures are awesome! And even enemies and rivals are great! Views on lore I'm currently trying to read through all the FFXIV lore, so admittedly I'm not too knowledgeable on it. I don't think it's mandatory to make your character adhere strictly to the in-game lore, since I believe creativity is key! So I think I may end up making alternate bios for my character(s) -- one for the original bio and one that's pretty much an AU that's adapted to the lore -- in case people are picky about that sort of thing. o3o Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc) I'm. . . not sure! ; w ; I'm new to MMO roleplaying so I don't really know what's the norm and what isn't! I guess the main thing is just differentiating between talking out of character, and talking in-character. As long as I can tell that, I guess I don't care where it's coming from. o3o Other Info Country United States Timezone EST Contact info I've got a Discord! I'd rather people PM me about it though, so I don't have to post it publicly. ^_^;;
  17. Hello, everyone! ; w ; I'm Kiara, and I'm fairly new to the game! I played it for maybe a month or so on the PS4 about a year ago... ^_^;; but then recently got it again for the PC! So I've been back in it for a month and since I'm on a computer this time around, the socializing and rping is a lot easier to manage. x) So I figured I'd jump in and try to meet some people and maybe write some fun adventures! :3 I'm actually like... completely new to MMO roleplay, however, and I guess that makes me feel a little nervous about trying to get into it. I've mainly rp'd on MySpace, and then sites that mimic the original MySpace site after everyone left. I've also put in a couple years on Tumblr, as well, and a few times I've hit up forums, but that's about it. So it feels like a whole new world to me, but I love video games and I love writing, so I'd love to combine the two! I do have a Discord, and don't mind adding new friends! I just prefer not to post it publicly, and would like to chat with people at least a little bit before adding them. ^_^;; ALSO. I admittedly don't know very much about Final Fantasy. I'm actually more of a Kingdom Hearts girl. But FFXIV is probably the most aesthetically pleasing, engaging, and fun MMO I've ever tried. T ^ T
