  1. I LOVE TANKING. I can understand your concerns though and trust me running with a group of people who are (for the most part) just as new to this as you are, can be a bit intimidating. Everyone's learning the pulls, getting a feel for how their class plays, etc. Rogue DPS get parties killed though and not having a healer also spells disaster. It doesn't matter how quick they can knock an enemy out of the field if the next thing they target has already wittled them down to nothing. (or in the case of no healer wittled you down to nothing) I've been reading up on a fellow RPer here named Sounssy and his tanking guide I feel pretty safe in saying is TOTALLY awesome. http://distantworld.enjin.com/forum/m/5260755/viewthread/7653711-arr-tanking-guide-beta-iii Both classes I think have their strengths and in the end it will all lead to your play style. Don't lose heart though! If you enjoyed tanking back in FFXI and still want to do it, then just get some experience under your belt and as you learn the pulls and mechanics of the game. I haven't even hit the instance stuff yet because I'm trying to figure out which class will suit my play style more. So props to you for getting in there and challenging yourself!
  2. As I understand it so far it's not very game breaking especially from an RP standpoint. We don't control it... so I mean literally the only way this thing is going to have any kind of "use" game breaking wise imo is if the players involved are ok with it. *Do you have the echo?* *yes* *can I share something from my past with you?* etc etc. "speaking" to others is another time where you'd need consent from another player who's speaking a different language. *I have the echo, would it be ok if I understand you?* I think the big take away so far has been this idea of being tempered. If we have characters who want to participate in fighting the primals in an IC manner. Don't forget, lots of RP strife can come from WANTING to be able to do something... maybe even being real useful to the group if you could be there. But being unable to go. But yeah so far it seems pretty simple in practice.
  3. Thank you both for more input. I haven't been able to sit down and really rip into the questline yet (I've just been trying to get a few classes to 15 so that I can hit my tanking Jobs asap) Kain if what you've said is true then having the Echo only manifest certain aspects of it might be exactly what I needed to see. The spoilers that Freelance put up are also really helpful! If you haven't given them a look yet (and of course don't mind spoilers)
  4. Kira would just continue her patrols between Ul'dah and Gridania. She's kinda boring. I'm with Kira on this one. As soon as I can snag my chocobo I'll put him in Behemoth armor and commence being gallant and saving all the ppl! But during down time... maybe Brave would be smithing...
  5. ok... So yeah that video was pretty spot on >< rofl Seriously wondering how they're going to solve this before actual release. I'm at work right now so the pre-release rage isn't as intense as some of the people who were hoping to enjoy this the whole weekend. But wow... just wow ><
  6. Ok... so there is a pretty large outcry and I feel for good reason. I want people to be able to play on Balmung or Gilgamesh. The communities have been awesome. I can't have what I want and I know that if I were on the outside right now I'd be fighting for a place to set up shop too. We can't create a poll on this thread but when you make a new topic you can set up a vote. (We don't have to be a moderator to do so I believe.) Why not make a poll showing the moderators just how bad this situation is? HOPEFULLY something will come from it but at the very least doing so will show a numerical value of just how bad the situation is. It might also help the player base who can't get in to help identify who is being left out. That way if the moderators still feel they should keep it at two servers, those who are unable to create characters can come together and form their own world group. The linkshell section does have an "Other" tab to place your group. So you can still use the site to recruit, form meetings, and let people know that other options do in fact exist. There is some justified grumpiness about this situation, but we don't control the server populations. Telling people who may have been waiting for this game for months to years to wait even longer... It doesn't fix the problem.
  7. Allow me to toss out some spoilers, then.
  8. Well it might be the first time you've heard the terms but as I warned earlier regarding spoilers >< (if they still matter to you don't read further) You've probably already encountered the ability story wise, just not seen it's name yet. I have to agree though... all abilities can be used with respect in RP BUT I don't want there to be a pre conceived issue with people using it in game "without warning". So if I do decide to have my character use the Echo (highly likely if it's needed to fight primals) then I want to know what I'm getting into. I intend to get a bit further into the main quest line before tackling RP, that way I can understand the world a little better. So much of this has been a learning experience >< A very appreciated one though =)

    A sad day

If not we will gather all of the outcast and take a poll on which server to select. Lets try to keep this post going and reach out to the others who are not gonna be able to get in. First off I want to commend you all for persevering. With the information you've shared, it's made it necessary to start thinking about new places to expand a growing community (It hasn't even reached official launch yet and they've capped servers). BUT to call yourselves outcast is hurtful to the rest of us. "We" didn't say you couldn't join a server. Many of the people here tried to encourage you and wanted you to join the world we were in. This is a sad day... But it's sad for all of us, not just the people who were locked out. I still hope to see some of you join Gilgamesh or Balmung... server locks will probably go away still imo, because a game does lose subscribers after that initial rush. Some people buy it, realize it's not for them and move on. Populations do die down, servers get consolidated, etc etc. I'm not a moderator or have any real power over this forum or the RPC, but I hope you all find a place to RP, the game is great and should be enjoyed with others, and like you all said before: You aren't alone.
  10. I'd like to add that I've really only been with the site for a little under two weeks and have felt very welcomed by the community here. The crew on Gilgamesh so far have been a great group to chat with or just listen to prattle on. It's been like a little pocket version of the forum regarding help as well. There has been talk regarding server transfers and although I'm unsure how that will play out regarding population, if money isn't an issue, it might be good to try and just make a character where you can and transfer over once it's available. (There are a lot of "what ifs" around that one though, but it is a thought) The point of my rambling is that it will be well worth the effort of trying to get in. Even with all the hiccups we've encountered so far I feel confidant you'll appreciate the community there.
  11. The fact that it's not controllable means that it's harder to use for metagaming or godmoding, though of course jerks and bad RPers will come up with ways to work around that. The Echo's actually woven through most of the story of XIV 1.x and 2.x, and of course, it's the only canonical way that you can fight Primals -- the Echo acts as a sort of spiritual shield against being Tempered, and once you're Tempered, well... suffice it to say that you quickly get on just about every PC's and most NPC's hit lists. EDIT: In terms of how I use it in RP, I basically just restrict it to "can't be Tempered, convinces L'yhta that Hydaelyn itself is her patron deity, sometimes allows her to know lore that appears in cutscenes." As with other powers, I leave the door open to other players if they want to say, "hey, if you want, here's something you might remember about me through the Echo," but I'd never ask a player if I could have the Echo grant me knowledge of their character's history. Wow I'm really glad you said something about this. I just hit lvl 15 before I had to rest up a little for work. So if I wanted to IC'ly fight primals there really isn't any other way around it. The game has been pretty great so far guys, hopefully more snippets of Lore in the main quest will help me better formulate my background.
  12. Well I can only tell you that I left the lobby only to have to fight just to get back to the NA/EU server list blank screen. (took maybe 5 reload attempts) But the list is still blank for me there but fine on the JP servers too.
  13. I know a lot of us just have to keep trying, but does anyone know if there is something I could be doing if it's just not updating the NA/EU realm list?
  14. Right there with ya. But as the poster above me said. Such is launch =)
  15. I'm in the same boat here. I was hoping to move to Gridania too after I finished up the Marauder quest line/Became a more competent blacksmith/armorer. The sad thing is all of you are on Balmung >< lol I tend to keep to myself though that and the player housing for Gridania will fit a little better for my character too. Either way I'm sure you can bring the RP with you Forest Guardian. If you involve yourself with others, they might just trek out to your home when they're in need of you. =D
  16. Well thank you for replying! At least I know other people are using this ability. I'll keep perusing the forum. There's just a lot to sift through =) I hear ya, if it's being used as a communication method it can practically trump great liars >< It's one of those things that seem pretty pertinent to the game though. So if there are other people using it, I wanted to know if they've devised some way to not be abusive or if it's mostly being used to color interactions with NPCs or when a player WANTS to allow it's use. As it was posted above though, it seems to be something we can't control. So there's a good chance we can acknowledge it's existence and let the player decide if they wish to be forthcoming with their info or not.
  17. Ok, but what about other abilities attributed to it? I think I encountered a quest where I saw into the past of someone. Does anyone encounter this ability in their RP? And since we can't control it, would it be more like an IC whisper telling them "Hey... so you get an insight regarding my past *insert memory*" Not that this is bad etc... I think the Echo has fun RP possibilities but I guess I'm a little unsure how I should deal with people who have it OR if I should try to incorporate it into my own background.
  18. *gets ready for pre-launch* Are these also the names for limitless sky LS?
  19. Ok so in my search for trying learn more about the game and Lore I've run across this term a lot. *spoilers may begin here* (I honestly have no idea how common place this is since I only reached level 11) There have been discussions about abilities linked to it and an explanation on why we can understand almost all things spoken (like literally... languages etc) so I was hoping for some clarification. For starters how many people RP having this ability? Lore wise it seems to be popping up a bit. If a lot of people are RPing having it... how exactly does one deal with it activating OR for that matter keep anything in their background moderately secretive >< Is it attributed to why we all understand each other? Have people tried to learn to control it? WHO gives it to us and how many people via lore are aware of it's existence? I know that a lot of these questions might spoil my in game leveling experience and I'm not TOO worried about spoilers. I'd rather have a story that didn't trample over lore, than enjoy a momentary surprise or twist from the quest line.
  20. ^ I'm very much the type to just run out the gates and grind grind grind (and I still forsee that happening ><) BUT in a game where ONE CHARACTER can pretty much learn everything... waiting to "max out" just feels like I'll be missing out on some great opportunities for RPing. I'll probably give it a day or so still... Find an outfit that I can at least walk around town in so my immersion isn't completely destroyed >< (pink... lowbie armor... is just not my kinda thing ><)
  21. Well written, and overall great strategies for dealing with trolls! Thank you for posting it
  22. This has been super informative! Thanks so much! So even the "science" aspect of it has a bit of "mysticism" to it. I'm a big fan of Lifestream nonsense so this seems like a big plus.
  23. So this is another great resource thread >< I've been trying to absorb as much info as possible but most of it is just me trying to find answers to my own questions. I guess something that I have yet to find (or maybe it's discussed in a quest that I've yet to experience since I'm a pretty low level) is anything regarding an afterlife or the concept of a soul. There is a lot of info on this forum hidden behind spoiler walls that I might just have to examine but my quick glance didn't find anything. I know the Nymeia governs fate and Nald'thal governs life and death but I've found little concerning the underworld and anything dealing with it. (heck what happens when a WHM raises someone, or when we fall in battle and show up in town >< *although the latter I'm sure is more just a game mechanic, I'm curious if there has been any explanation regarding this stuff)
  24. I think both of these linkshells are exactly what I was looking for. I intend to be a bit of a "free knight" from Record of Lodoss war fame =P So not being tied down to a well bonded group BUT being able to interact with them is just the kind of freedom I need! Once game launches I'll be sure to request one. Who can I contact to acquire these? (or has the list not changed since it was mentioned earlier?)
  25. As a new player who's trying to piece together a background this post was invaluable! Thanks so much for compiling it all. Earlier in the thread I read something to the effect that Ala Mhigo was conquered 20 some odd years ago by the Garlean. From what I've read under the racial background stuff of Highlanders, most of that group hailed from that city. Can anyone link more lore based around that city? I know I've seen articles about the fist of Rhalgr hailing from there... but I was hoping for some other culture references or other ideas to spring off of. If the city was conquered 20 years ago I'm hoping that I could make my character be someone who fled the city around 4-8 and been a hermit until it became to dangerous to live in the wilderness alone.
