I actually like the hierarchy that OP posted! My thoughts: I think the Grand Companies are pretty much the military and policing faction of all the city states presented, as we don't really see any other factions doing patrols and the like. I think there would be a variety of paths, those that are fully committed to the Grand Company (Go through the ranks, obtain positions and the like do the desk job or be on the field) and Reserves or Volunteers (where most Adventurers would fall into if they decided to be part of the GC structure in the first place, depending on rank of course). Now, authority is kind of difficult, because either a character can accept said authority or not, so saying "Oh yeah! You wanna play it like that? Well I'm such and such rank of a certain GC, you are under arrest!" can be annoying as seen at a different thread. My personal view on that is a Flame has no authority in Gridania nor does an Adder in Ul'dah, A Grand Company would only have real authority of the city state they represent. About rank and age, I agree with Lalah on that one about RP, but as countless people have said it, you RP your character in whatever way you wish! Iliette does not have a Grand Company rank (not truly anyway) apart from doing what is available for Adventurers in the first place (Hunts posted, company missions, hunt logs and the occasional patrol when they are short staffed) if doing either of these, she would be in full uniform of a basic guard, which she IC would have to hand back at the end of her shift. (One of my great joys of self-RP I had when idling was to stand near Mikh-khet in full guard uniform and pretend it was patrols, and when called to do a dungeon or something, Iliette would go on her linkpearl and try to get out of doing it by seeing if the other person patrolling (and NPC) was looking at her or not, speaking in hushed tones and the like) She has no other obligation to the Adders other then taking on small trivial jobs or the occasional bigger mission if the Adders would deem her useful for the situation and in character she gets paid a small wage for those efforts. Apart from the people in the Free Company she is serving in, she has no real right to pull rank over anyone and even then Iliette deems it more fun not to do so. (A chance to fight is a chance to fight, she ain't gonna pass that up!) And to answer Ragnar's question. I think that's because most soldiers in the City would be off duty or on light duty at best. Police officers can expect trouble and it is their job to break up fights and the like on varying levels, which can be a painful job if not appropriately armored. And this was my two cents!

To add my two cents to this, as an EU player, I have considered moving to Balmung, because of the EU links hell, a couple of other older FC members done it, however I decided against it, I have made way too many friends to leave them behind. I'm lucky that my work schedule coincides with North American peak times, so it works out to my advantage and my FC does both RP and progression, so there is that as well!

Well to get Iliette Guillestet, first you get a large bowl and some whiskers and then start by adding a large portion of... Sanada Yukimura (From Sengoku Basara): Yukimura is courageous, doesn't back down and fights with not one but two spears at hand, amazing acrobatic skills and amazing strength and rushing the enemy head on. as well as is a dedicated and loyal follower to whomever deserves said loyalty (For Yukimura that would be his lordship ) Then you take two Date Masamunes (Sengoku Basara...again) and start mixing!: Date Masamune while a leader is cocky and is not openly afraid of anything! Speaking bad engrish lines and the like charges into battlefield not having much thought for anyone else until the deed is done! ((I may have used "Let's Party!" a few times in a fight )) Now let it rest for a bit while we gather some spices... Go to your spice rack and grab some of the emotional distance of Effy Stonem... (Skins) (as well as her being Iliette's PB) The awkward and sometimes immature romance of Koizumi (Lovely Complex) And last but not least the awesome pretend heroics of any shounen hero thinking they are all that! Now we add a dash of all of those things we grabbed into the mixture, we mix it again, put it into the oven and then we get Iliette Guillestet

Hmmm... I would say yeah overall RP has been dwindling in numbers, but that shouldn't discourage anyone from RPing and the like. It takes a bit of looking but if you search hard enough you can find good quality RP. In my personal experience, I always managed to find some of all levels. People who join the server can utilize many ways of doing so. Joining the many different FC's linkshells are a good start, even if you don't want to join the FC they advertise many great events there open or otherwise. As well as many have great in FC arcs themselves. The RPC as well is a good resource and heck putting yourself up for the many auctions and the like can get you some great RP partners and some great arcs in the works. Taverns used to be a great way of finding RP but because of the talking quests and the FC housing that kinda got pushed aside. Many RPers have "Open to walk up RP" in their search tag, that I haven't seen used much personally, but I think it would be great if more people would use it. I also saw a thread here that maybe use the party finder for random RP shenanigans, which I thought was pretty cool! On the negative side, what I have found (especially with tavern RP) is that it never goes beyond introductions and small talk then and there. I usually have Iliette stationed at either at Arcanum's FC house, or at Old Gridania near Mikh Khet and I wish more people would just walk up to me and say hi in character I agree with all the people from Gilgamesh that have commented. The server while it does have fewer numbers RPing (either because they left, or don't like asking for it because they feel they are bothering the person etc), but it is not dying and worth a look. It maybe a bit of a search, but people are open for it and we have many tools at our side so I say utilize them!

Excuse me sir, but you take that back! I play a fight loving gridanian lancer from a "scum" family and not exactly a stranger to mischief herself! My favourite place is Gridania, it is pretty and it's nice just to even walk around in, though not much RP happens there in my experience, which is a damn shame! (I mean come on, it even has a stage and seats!)

Sorry for late greetings, but I thought it's time to say hello! I play Iliette Guillestet, Jikk'a Lanbatal and Marius Rontermont on Gilgamesh! This is the first game I properly RP in, but I have been playing video games and MMO's in general for a long while. Before this I mostly RP'd on forums or tabletop games! I tend to lean towards medium to heavy, but I let the event decide the situation, I try to be in character most of the time, so if your up for RP and see me just standing around or walking, feel free to approach! If I have already met you, then let me wave again *wave* and hopefully I get to meet all of you and more of you!

It's a good idea certainly, as long as the rivalry and villainy doesn't escalate to OOC drama it's usually all fine. I personally prefer playing morally grey characters even if they appear to be good.

Gilgamesh yo! I haven't played on Balmung personally, so I can't say much there. People already said that Gilgamesh is smaller, but we are always welcoming of new people all the time everywhere, there is also a lot of fun events going on as well and we are very approachable as a group and ready to help! But as people said, checking out wikis and stuff of both server's players and the linkshells would be a good place to start which server you want to pick at the end!

I'm joining Xifang on this and *waves* and welcome you to Gilgamesh, I would love more Gridania based RP so if you see me walking around (or I see you whichever happens first lol) feel free to approach (or I approach you again whichever happens first)

I'm not gonna say it's for 2.2 (but I would love it if they would release it with it (very unlikely)) So I'm just gonna list my general wish list: - more hairstyles for all races (though I really want it more for elezen) female elezen haven't got a single non-feminine short hairstyle, I personally would like to see more of that! - more facial and body scarring and while we are at the subject of body, body tattoos and body paint as well (we have so many armors that bare so much skin, it's impossible not to get out a few scratches here and there, not every adventurer is THAT good) - Also seriously, more beards for the lads! - Choosing e-motes at character creation, I mean I look at the squatting Miqo'te and I really want that way of sitting or maybe more different kinds of e-motes like /crouch - The starting clothes not being race specific, you would still get the race starter, but being able to buy other race starter equipment and be able to wear it. -armory holding all armor (not just specific ones or sets) and also hold vanity stuff as well -people already mentioned swimming, so I'm gonna mention dungeons based around it (like swimming through sewers in an ancient ruin etc) - The world feels small (to me at least) so more geographical areas and with that some more quests, I would for example love to see what Garland looks like as well as more of Ishgard and Gridania as well. These would be my personal preferences, but really I would love to see more of everywhere. - More dragons!!!! -More Mounts!!! - More Clothes!!! - It would be a cool idea if summoners and arcanists could vanity their pets so it looks like one of the many minions that we get through the game! - Personal Housing, I would love it if it would be instanced like it is currently with the FC housing (I heard some rumors that it might be instanced from the FC house, but not sure how much truth there is to that) - Never mind the size of the plot/house, but type as well, like maybe have a house that is more reminiscent of a hobbit burrow or if it's close to a mountain side maybe a cave entrance or a tree house. I would love if all of it would be released and I know many are probably not possible but still they would be cool features!

I usually do, mostly for humor then anything else on occasion or try to meet new people ICly, I find it a great fun, for example for the Valentine's day event, my character got roped into helping them (the NPCs) out to pay back a debt, standing beside the NPC and offering chocolate to passersby. For the little ladies event I sat under a tree and cheered them on for their performance, thought it doesn't really work in my opinion, people usually just rush through them and go back to their business!

Hmmm It's an interesting question and have not really put real thought into it until now.... Iliette- I think for Iliette it's not the person but the intent that matter, she is a fighter after all. She is a fighter so there will be some skin on skin action (punching people like it's no-one's business or stabbing them with either a dagger or lance). I tend to make her vary of strangers, much preferring to get to know a person through fighting then talking. The only time I ever made her really skittish of touch is when a loved one touches her, she doesn't really know how to react. Friends once more she is not skittish or anything, but she expects a hug from the front and a knife in the back... Jikk'a - Hmmm.... He is a hermit by nature, so he doesn't like most adventurers that he sees, seeing them as destroyers to his precious forest more akin to robbers and killers. The only people he sees as an exception are bards and musicians, but even then he tends to be picky. He because of not having contact with many people actually enjoys weird or unusual behavior from others, being them overly touchy or anything and finds it wonderful and interesting. (much like "Yaaay, I'm not the only weird one!") If he doesn't like something, he will let you know quickly!
