  1. The fastest planets in our solar system are actually the biggest. The fastest rotating planet we know of is Jupiter which is also the largest. A full rotation is about 9~ hours. Unless Eorzea is ten times bigger than Jupiter it would not have the gravity to support such a fast rotation speed. Because Jupiter is so fast, it has changed the very shape of its planet, causing it to be slightly oblong instead of spherical.
  2. 1. Since Elementals are the land basically, do they exist in other regions of the world? They seem to only be talked about in the context of the Shroud and they seem to be the equivalent of nature spirits but the Shroud isn't the only place that is 'nature.' There are different kinds of nature, even. Is it that Elementals exist in other regions of the world but it's not a part of their culture to pay any heed to them? Maybe their ways have weakened and silenced their own regions' Elementals? And perhaps that could be why Gridanians seem so xenophobic? 2. How does one become a Hearer? They're described as Conjurers but not all Conjurers are Hearers. So is it that they somehow become one while learning to be a Conjurer? Or is it that people are born Hearers and are drawn to becoming Conjurers because of their ability?
  3. I've been leveling CUL a lot lately and I usually see someone sitting at the tables out by the Bismarck. I can definitely also support the claim that there are more RPers there than at the Drowning Wrench.
  4. Hm, this is all really useful information although I'm still not sure how to apply it toward my character. Maybe I should have just asked this in the first place: Would anyone be willing to appraise my character's backstory in a PM to make sure it's sensible/lore-friendly?
  5. I am a fellow shy RPer and would love some more friends to RP with. I've been working mostly on my gameplay stuff but I've been dipping into the shallow end of the RP pool and think I need help wading out into the deeper end of it. I noticed you are in the Europa linkshell? What times do you play? I'm US -5 utc but I sometimes play during the day. Like tomorrow.
  6. I haven't yet found a good resource for FFXIV lore, unfortunately. I seem to only be able to find general FF wiki's. I'm really looking to know more about Eorzea's creatures and most specifically even, magical based creatures. -Spirits Does Eorzea have them? Mean, benevolent, ambivalent? Are there any legends involving spirits? What is the extent of their powers? What is their relationship towards mortals? -Elements I'm pretty sure I've seen some element enemies floating around which are pretty standard in FF games. Are they the same as Elementals, though? Since they seem to be mobs, are they connected to Primals? Are they connected to gods which also are element based? Are there friendly ones? -Aether From what little I know, this is magical energy that seems to reside in life, land, and just about everything. Is all magic aether though? Can just anyone sense aether or do you need to be practiced or particularly sensitive? What sort of things can you do with aether or is it supposed to be kind of vague? Basically, to what extent can an RPer use aether as an excuse to RP strange things happening before it gets out of hand? -Elementals I've heard references to them, particularly in regards to Padjal being able to speak with them and them being a strong presence in the Shroud....but what are they exactly? And what is their relationship with non-Padjal? Are they magical or nature-based? -The Twelve Are they actual gods and goddesses or are they myths? Are they really gods or are they just ascended beings of power? -The Primals All pretty much bad guys, right? How often and to what extent do they mess with the lives of mortals beyond tempering? How do they go about this? Lastly, what is the difference in elemental powers between the Twelve, the Primals, and the Elementals? Really just trying to get a feel with how much I can mess with the elements story-wise in RP and get it to make sense within the world of Eorzea. And also, if there are any good quests to help me figure out the answers to these questions, let me know!
  7. I'd like to propose an alternative. This forum doesn't really have a separate forum for any sort of 'Making Connections' threads. RP discussion is distinctly different from threads that are simply looking for RP contacts or for roles in their storyline. Balmung and Gilgamesh could each have their own 'Making Connections' forum which would both organize the forums and also separate out actual discussion from contact requests. If I want to find some contacts for my story, I can simply go to the Making Connections forum without sorting through discussion. If I just want to talk about RP and discuss things like lore, RP etiquette, and bio advice then I can and there is no need to have separate server forums for general RP discussion. I think the idea of having separate forum servers is more needed in the sense of "LF a person to play my sister!" than "Does this character concept work?" Edit: Or if the issue really is that you don't want to separate the servers any further, what about a completely separate 'Making Connections' forum that is shared by both servers and simply tagged?
  8. Yes. I am in that linkshell already. I will contact you when I get back from vacation.
  9. Don't have access to FFXIV right now but I know you can look at the race/gender heights when you customize a retainer. I'm pretty sure max height for females is like 7'6" so males are going to be a few or so inches taller max. For weight you're going to have to estimate since I don't believe there is any official info given. Do consider how tall and bulky roe's are so they probably weigh a lot more than humans do. Your six foot-ish average football player, for example, is probably going to be in the range of 230-300 ish pounds. A male roe is going to be probably a foot or so taller and much bulkier than a human football player. I know some may think something like 400-500 pounds may be extreme but as my personal guesstimate, I think it fits. But that also depends on what your roe is like.
  10. Here are some of my ideas, partially based off of some events from other RP communities I liked: In TOR: There was a couples mixer for a rave dance. Everyone who signed up for the event was tossed into a blind date system and when you attended you picked up your date to spend the dance with. I think there may have been a music channel or vent you could access to listen to the music being played. Could do something more fantasy-like with more folksy type music. That was a lot of fun. In WoW and GW2: There were a lot of walking/traveling events. Things like pilgrimages and protecting caravans. I actually find these to be a lot of fun. Plus whenever you reach the destination people can just hang out and RP.
  11. Currently away on Christmas vacation. Been unable to play FFXIV through like all of December thanks to the holiday season. By the turn of the new year though I'll be looking to hop back into RP so I'd love to reconnect with old friends as well as meet some new people. My gal is morally gray and I can already see her trying to convince your character to leave the Maelstrom.
  12. I don't play a miqo'te and I wasn't exactly eager about getting into FFXIV with its racial selection the way it is. While it's normal to play humanoids in MMOs, all the races in this game look like ever so slightly altered humans. It's probably my only major hangup with the game but I can get past it, especially since it's more of a visual thing. The way I see miqo'te they are different enough from the other races while still being a pretty face. I know they get pegged as 'the sexy race' a lot but I don't think that's why most people chose them. I feel like the features of a miqo'te are different enough to feel like they are a separate race but they are also 'human' enough for people to empathize with. Additionally, you don't really see this kind of race in other MMOs. At least I haven't. My 2c.
  13. Inappropriate or not the miqo'te animation isn't very useful. As someone who has played in a multitude of MMOs the lying down animation comes up all. the. time in RP. This is because there are a lot of times where our characters are sleeping, lying down, knocked unconscious, or have just fallen. The miqo'te animation isn't very versatile. The lalafell one, however, is very versatile. You could use that animation to make one look passed out or simply just lying on a bed. For the miqo'te, there is really no immersion in that sense. But in the end, I suppose no one is really getting what they want if it can only be used in beds. But I also think it is understandable for a person to like a race but hate their animations. Stereotypes or not, if you envision your character differently then you must suspend disbelief. Either way, I understand where this disappointment is coming from. Perhaps if we keep sending feedback we'll get a real /lie down that will let our characters lie down anywhere.
  14. I am new to the game and am looking for some more RPers to roleplay with. Like you I see RP in MMOs as the number one important thing. I will always put RP first before any kind of gameplay. I know some will disagree but once you've played one MMO, you've pretty much played them all. RP, however, is always unique. My RP style probably fits better for sandbox MMOs but I've only ever played theme park MMOs, like this one. But I do sometimes like throwing game elements or OOC mechanics out the window if I think it will make for a better story. Imagination power! I also can't guarantee that I'll be around the game forever, or even next year, but I am still looking for long term RP regardless under the idea that all good RP has to come to an end sometime. But if that sounds good to you... My character is a female roegadyn who grew up alone in the wilderness of Thanalan. The only reason she ever survived for so long out there was because she had strangers who helped her out along the way, teaching her what they knew and handing her supplies when they could afford it. I am looking for anyone whose character could have been a part of that process, big or small. Or I am looking for more recent stories based around traveling and exploration. Maybe we could even work in some IC leveling/questing into that picture. I run on an est/9-5 job schedule, currently. (Up a little bit past my bed time. Eep)
  15. I have a personal experience involving this from a different MMO. I had a character who was hanging out in a town while there just so happened to be some guild-based RP going on. It was more than two people but I've often been hesitant to enter an RP when all the characters all have the same guild tag. My character was nearby and over-heard what was going on. She had an opinion and I decided to let her butt in on the conversation and deliver her spiel to this guild after debating for a long time whether or not I should get involved. She ended up becoming good friends with that guild leader which lead to many more RP scenes. Moral of the story, I guess: You can't always be sure if RPers will respond positively to your RP, but you also can't be sure that you won't be missing out on meeting your next RP partner(s) either.
  16. Being new to FFXIV and this community and all, I've noticed that the day and night cycles in the game are rather short. I'm curious how the roleplaying community here treats them in their roleplay. When it's night do you roleplay it as night? What happens when it changes to day and then night again? Do you roleplay the time of day as being whatever it is in server time? Or do you try to keep it vague?
  17. Character Name:Flickering Ember Hells/Sea?:Hellsguard Gender:Female Timezone:EST Looking for?: Long lost family members, friends, enemies, anyone who would like to get in some small scale storylines. Server: Balmung 2. Does your character fit the 'common' lore of your Roegadyn or are they singular? I'm not all that familiar with the game's lore and am not sure where to look really since I haven't found a wiki or anything that goes into detail on the race. I do have a preference towards making my characters feel like a member of the race they belong to even if they don't end up in practicing all their race's cultural standards. My character grew up mostly by herself in the wild, although with help from others. She's not too familiar with how any race works but is most familiar with how fellow roegadyn's work and what their cultural standards are, even if that is not overall much. 3. What are your Rp limits, if any? (Eg: no permadeath, no ERp etc) No ERP. I will perma kill my characters only if there is a storyline or RP leading up to it. I don't kill my characters off in bar brawls or by random muggers on the street. The same goes for anything that would permanently disable my character.
  18. This: At least visually wise, was partially based off of this: http://denshoni.deviantart.com/art/Vulcan-69779932 A deviant art because I can't find an in game screen or sprite of it. Vulcans from Odin Sphere.
  19. A lot of the most memorable characters in some of our most beloved pieces of fiction wouldn't be all that memorable if thrown in alone in an RP setting. That is because a lot of our favorite stories cast several characters who end up being foils of each other. Foils help make our casts diverse, entertaining, and draw out traits that otherwise would not have come out. Some of my favorite RPs have been with characters who foil my own. That said, I think being 'unique' comes down to how in depth the character is roleplayed, not the character's backstory, concept, or personality. If the character has lots of things that set him or her apart from other characters and it is easy to describe what this character is like, that, to me, is unique.
  20. I am looking for any role player who wants or needs a character in his or her background. My character is a female roegdayn who was born blind and grew up in the wild after being separated from her family. Other than that everything is pretty much open. Your character could be: -A member of the family she was separated from -An indivual who found her in the wild, hurt, and nursed her back to health or otherwise helped save her life - An individual who fed her or provided her with shelter when things were tough - An individual she helped rescue in the wild - Anything else interesting we could think up!
  21. Code: (Select All) I. Basic Info Characters:Flickering Ember Primary character: Flickering Ember Linkshells:Intermission Primary RP linkshell:None II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Medium Views on RP combat and injuries: I prefer text+rolls. For injuries that are criipling, maiming, or disfiguring, I would like to talk it over oocly first. Views on IC romance: I don't seek it out and I generally prefer to stay away from it. Although that doesn't mean I would never do a romance RP. If it happens it happens. If it does, I like for things to go slow, would like to be OOCly informed if your character is the type to cheat or cheats, and prefer to fade to black if things get heated. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Not much to say here. If our characters are going to be connected to each other from a back story perspective then I prefer that character to be a main or an established and active salt. Views on lore: I just joined the game so my lore is a little fuzzy. I like to stick within the game's lore but also recognize that game worlds have quite a bit of space where lore is not defined. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): If a link shell or FC channel is considered IC then it is IC, if it is OOC then it is OOC. The public channels I will be IC in except maybe Shout. III. Other Info Country:United States Timezone: Eastern Standard Time -5 Contact info:You can message me here or in game.
