  1. Hey, my character Ember is also something of a feral child, although she's been successfully assimilated into civilization....to a degree. I think it could be interesting to watch the two interact or get something started between the two.
  2. I'll bite. Disclaimer: This is purely Devil's Advocate. What did you expect them to do? Again, personal, single-player housing wasn't on the table until people demanded it for months. It isn't lazy, because we don't know what was worked on behind the scenes; Maybe they had a functioning model that wasn't workable in the long-term, maybe they didn't have the server space to justify it, maybe the level of work creating an entirely-different-but-mostly-the-same infrastructure just wasn't worth the manpower? SE's been clear that the work on 2.4 and beyond is already underway, so why deviate resources from that to work on something like this? Allow me to draw everyone's attention to the flak that happened when Novus upgrades slipped one month from 2.25 to 2.28. It was a month, and people flipped their wigs over it. Now consider how many people that actually affected, given the community's propensity to bitch and whine about atma droprates and the like? They got a ton of blowback from a small percentage of people over "dropping promises" so it's insane to think it would have been okay for them to delay anything. A lot of players were expecting something similar but separate housing areas for individuals. I was always pretty skeptical about that idea though because of how few housing wards were released. I personally was expecting an instanced housing area. No neighborhoods. Cookie cutter interiors that look the same for all players. Pretty much the 'private chambers' models but with a house+ yard. When there is enough server space for a single FC to have 512 rooms, I do figure that the same could be achieved with personal housing. I don't know anything about their original plans since I joined after ARR was released, well after launch. But as a new player who saw the feature promoted, it really sounded like something was in the works instead of it being something tacked on like how it was.
  3. Pure and simple this was the laziest, most unprofessional design feature I have ever seen in a game. It is on par to a high school student slapping together a project minutes before it is due and turning in something that isn't even close to finished. I joked to myself last night "What if they hadn't even started on personal housing until now and they are hustling to get it done?" I joked, given the lack of info they have given us. Didn't expect to be right. It didn't take them half a year to figure out how to code FC housing to make it so individuals could purchase them. If it was this difficult to figure out how to work around server strains....why didn't they just push it back? I would rather that than a gimp housing system that screws over everyone but the most hardcore of players. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I am honestly surprised that anyone would defend this. It is that lazy. And they knew folks wouldn't be happy seeing as how they kept their mouths shut right up to the last minute.
  4. I can see how this stuff would be problematic, especially when you are required to join a grand company to progress in the game. I happily avoid it though since my character is a free spirit and would never join something so rigid and strict as a military organization. Though, I also OOC-wise just don't like the grand companies. I don't find any of them interesting and view them as just a means to an end to get to certain content. If I ever get around to making alts, I won't be RPing them as being a part of grand companies either. I do like that there are folks around who are seriously into RPing them, though, such as your FC. I may not like them but another player's passion towards RPing them can help bring the world to life. Honestly though, I haven't seen too many RPers roleplay their character as having anything but a minor association with their grand company.
  5. I don't think it is wise to go on a forum and call out a FC, particularly when said FC does frequent these forums. Personally, I would find it a turn off. Combat RP makes me uncomfortable. I still RP it though but I don't want to anymore than the story calls for. You describe yourself as a 'Combat RPer' who does other forms of rp besides combat rp. Then ultimately you prioritize that form of rp over others since that is what you like? I would say it is a turn off simply in the form of my preferences being different from yours. I guess what you'd really need is just to find other Rpers with the same interests.
  6. Hey Hornet, I am mostly a reactive Rper but have been an active Rper in my past, depending upon my RP group set up. There is nothing wrong with the story being about Hornet's past. I actually recommend it. It will help bring your friends into the picture and make the story easier to unfold. Just make sure there are plenty of reasons for others to get involved and that there is a potential for others' characters to get development as well. You don't even have to give it too much thought to lead the rp. That is to say, usually I just wing it and see where the RP takes us.
  7. I admittedly glazed over a lot of what was said so my response here is based heavily on previous discussions. It's less of a post directed at this thread and more of my thoughts that were helped formed by previous discussions. I try to ignore things like power play and just think about what kinds of skills my character has. I don't consider their power level. I don't go out of my way to bring my character down to counterbalance any RPers who go a little too overboard with their character's skills. I think about how exactly they fight, what techniques do they prefer, etc. I don't truly believe that mastering more than one thing is an impossibility but I also don't believe that just because you can in game doesn't mean you should. Additionally, MMO classes have a very cookie cutter way of fighting. Not all adventurers who use the same weapon are going to fight the same way. Ember for example uses her fists as weapons. But she isn't practiced in forms, carries a weapon for when her fists aren't good enough, and is willing to apply poisons. So I tend to divert my characters' abilities from their in game class quite a bit because I'd rather view my characters as people than X class. Disclaimer: And by "you" I mostly actually just mean "me". >.> Pre-work post, cough, cough.
  8. Flickering Ember is one such orphan brought in from the Calamity. Most specifically, she was, for a time, kept in an orphanage in Ul'dah. I've been heavily considering working some of her orphan elements into her RP. I am definitely interested in other RPers who want to touch on these themes.
  9. I also go with 1 year IRL= 1 year in game. It's been almost a year since ARR launched? To me, only one year has passed then but I know others will disagree. It's just easiest to keep up with and the game is very vague about how much time passes. If I didn't age up my character it would be weird. RP chronicles our characters adventures and their lives. It would be unnatural for my character to be caught in a time bubble.
  10. I don't get into nearly as much RP combat as I used to when I Rped in WoW. I started to make characters who are/were rookies to make rp combat easier on me. I really prefer to leave the resolution of combat up to fate, ie. dice rolls. I don't trust strangers, friends, or even myself to be unbiased to combat outcomes. I don't like knowing ahead of time who is going to win so I don't participate in talking it out OOC. If it is too inconvenient to use rolls or the other person doesn't want to I have my character lose by default.
  11. Whoa. Are you telling me that all the smalls in all wards are already gone? If so that is insane. Ugh people....
  12. I am leveling mining right now and am definitely interested. I don't know how long it will take me to get to gold since I am still a fresh miner but when I get there I can make a concentrated effort to mine a lot. Ember is not going to want gil though. She will want to barter. Interested?
  13. Not per say. What I am saying is that this still a very prevalent viewpoint in the world at large, and should be viewed as natural in any mideval/fantasy themed game. But any AAA title in the US market is going to downplay it for political reasons to avoid offending the majority. Also, it's not a "stronger & better" thing so much as a "designed for the hunter/gatherer role vs designed for the nurturing/caregiver role". Also, I should note here - I'm not inviting a flame war on this topic, I'm simply trying to expound on the concepts being discussed to avoid confusion on the whole matter. These do not reflect my personal viewpoints, just my understanding of the subject. Bolded the important part there and most specifically, the part that I am actually responding to. This goes hand and hand with some of the other responses in this thread too. It may seem like a logical and natural choice to simply assume that medieval/fantasy themed works have a "men are hunters, women are nurturers" mindset, however, I believe that this thought process is based solely on our own real life history. Though fantasy often means medieval, that should not be indicative of the game's culture's beliefs. It is entirely possible for a medieval fantasy world to have a culture with social equality much more advanced than our own while still lacking in technology.
  14. Source, or is this just a hunch? It's pretty much going to happen for reals as it's a housing mechanic, just one that we have already forgotten about. When FC housing first came out, no one really had enough money for FC housing and since we all knew that the prices would drop, most people just waited until the prices were literally at their lowest point before buying. With us only getting a single ward per realm, per housing area, there is no reason for the housing wards to suddenly disobey the mechanic they were introduced on. Prices will start at the original because this has always been the case. SE is being stingy with the amount of housing wards they introduce so I expect, at least for medium houses, for waiting for the lowest prices to buy a house to be a thing of the past, especially for any medium houses in desirable locations, like Mist housing. We saw a huge boost in FCs buying houses in 2.3 but this was because A. It became easier to make money and housing had been out for a while and more importantly: B. When legacy servers' lowest prices for housing were changed to match non-legacy server prices. ----------------- Anyway, onto FC rooms. Hm, I don't really see the need to explain why FC rooms are there. I thought it was self-explanatory. These are rooms that are just as apart of your FC house as your main rooms. At least, personally, I don't see a need for explanations at least. I don't find what the house to look on the outside coupled with the addition of FC rooms to be immersion breaking so I plan on RPing my FC room as an actual part of the house unless my FC leaders say otherwise. I definitely support anyone who wants to RP their FC room as something else. I'm just surprised at the amount of people who seem to be going for that option.
  15. I'd like to vouch for Tiergan's method. I've seen Tiergan use this method before on trolls and it actually worked. It does take some perseverance but it ended up being really effective. If you ignore the trolls and find yourself irritated at how long they are still hanging around, I'd give it a try.
  16. I am glad someone is speaking up about this because this is exactly how I feel. It is not what Gilgamesh players want to hear but from my experiences the RP community is not big enough for more than one RP server for ANY MMO except maybe WoW. The game has been out for a while at this point. I understand the original reason for Gilgamesh was so that newcomers could get a fresh and fair start on a non-legacy server but those differences likely aren't all that noticeable anymore for new players. That really hurts Gilgamesh's chances of getting fresh blood when non legacy servers are not really different from legacy ones at this point. Overall I have to agree with Faye. Splitting the RP community probably wasn't a good idea.
  17. If someone does something very cool like solo a boss when you think you're going to have a party wipe then I'll give a commendation. I will also give a commendation for party members who strike up friendly conversation or otherwise interact with other party members. Most of the time neither of those things happen though so I give my commendation to the DPS if they're not awful or the tank if they do a good job. I honestly skimp out on healer commendations though.
  18. I RP it as 1578. At game launch it was 1577. The turn of the new year happened at January or 1st Astral Moon. It matches IRL time and the game's storyline.
  19. While I am sure most of us here support RP on other servers, I will be frank with you and say I don't expect you to find much RP if any at all outside Balmung and Gilgamesh. There is ample reason why RPers like to gather into close communities. While I wish all servers could have a healthy amount of RP, most MMOs are only able to support one or two server communities. On Balmung though there is a healthy EU community so if you ever consider hanging out on Balmung don't think you won't have any one from your time zone to hang with. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.
  20. RPC has a very small amount of forums. Nothing outside the four general forums are used for discussion or planning since the other forums are mostly just archives. It may look like at a glance we have a lot of forums but actually we have few. The RP discussion needs to be cut down because half the time it tries to be a place to discuss the nature of RP and the other half it tries to be RP planning. I believe separating these kinds of topics into their own separate forums will stimulate activity as they are topics that are staples to any RP community. My opinion has changed somewhat: I believe that it would beneficial to first create a character connection forum and then see if a character development forum is still needed afterwards.
  21. I voted "Yes, and I will use it." Also, any chance we could get a 'making connections' forum?
  22. I like these new poses. I don't know what to think of the standing ones, though. It's hard to see them. Guess I really ought to see them in game before I can judge fairly. I might use them. I will definitely use the new sitting ones, though. The chair pose for roegadyn females looks pretty BA. And while I've never liked the other sitting pose in any MMO, since it's just an option in this game I appreciate it more. Good substitute for a kneel at least.
  23. Talking about Goldshire keeps Goldshire alive. Very few people use it as a serious form of entertainment. It lives on solely on novelty, infamy, and people who don't actually RP. Fortunately, Goldshire is unique to WoW. Although there will always be sprinkles of ERP no matter where you RP. Let's just forget Goldshire exists...
  24. So I got the Entry service because I didn't think I'd ever want to make an alt and I still don't really but I'm really missing the power to be able to make one time NPCs for events and things. My account is still a ways off before it renews the subscription. I want to be able to upgrade to Standard without being charged extra and without having to cancel my account. Is there a way to set up a Standard subscription and have it start when my Entry subscription would normally restart? Anyone have any experience with this? I find this to be quite baffling and the website doesn't explain it at all from what I can see.
  25. Where is this conversation going? Are ya'll basically saying FTP is the better route? Maybe it is a personal preference but... I am going to straight up say that I loathe FTP with every fiber of my being. I can guarantee you that I would have a lot less interest in this game if I could just buy the cavalry drake instead of doing dailies for it. If I am a casual pve-er who plays the game mostly to get vanity items then I am not really playing the game when I am playing FTP games. I guess I just don't understand why other gamers prefer FTP. I find the experience to stress me out. I prefer the peace of mind knowing that I don't have advertisements shoved in my face while trying to enjoy the game, that there is meaningful content being created, and I am not inconvenienced if I am not unloading 100 dollars per character on the cash shop. The day the subscription model dies is the day I'm quitting MMOs.
