I dunno. Unless lowbies can reach Ishgard easily then it definitely won't steal king rp spot from.Ul'dah. Could turn into a hotspot though....unless it becomes a hang out spot for trade and pve, like Mor Dhona currently is.

So, what is the alternative to the character restrictions? Yeah, the restrictions suck but they are there for a reason. Capped servers are...well...capped and they depend on restrictions to avoid things like 2 hour long wait times or server crashes. Previous MMOs had different but similar restrictions that IMO were not better than ffxiv's. Moon Guard would be locked several times. While old members could make alts freely, no new people to the server could roll there. Though, WoW servers probably have a higher cap overall. Simply increasing server capacity is ideal but unrealistic and probably not going to happen since they built ffxiv on dated tech. Interested to hear from you guys: What alternatives are there? Realistic alternatives.

International RP - A communication guide (04.07)
Flickering Ember replied to Ilwe'ran's topic in RP Discussion
I am interested in this guide and have a couple of questions: 1. My native language is English and I am role-playing as a character who speaks with poor English skills. Often times, I am worried about offending people who speak it as a second language. I am not sure if I am being silly or not. 2. I am also a slow responder to RP for different reasons. However, on occasion, I will make supplemental RP posts because I don't believe RP has to always be "you make one post now I make one post." A lot of these posts are often just to add flavor or I like to add on to what I last said to give the other player more content to respond off of. Does this make other people nervous or feel rushed? -
Aeon is a heavy RP FC and located in the Goblet. Our FC is built around a storyline of a serious nature, but I would not describe us as grim dark. We have a lot of humorous moments mixed in with our more serious RPs. Our FC concept is a group of individuals banding together to survive a cult that has been hunting them. For more details and to apply, check out our website: rune.enjin.com

Ember is quite accustomed to the desert and moves through it often. She could certainly comefind your character.

You can try completing challenges with the challenge log, running roulettes as a tank, and sending your retainers out on ventures. These will make you okay money but I really recommend doing crafting for the big bucks. You can also try spirit binding armor to make materia. This is a long and grindy process but it is a good alternative to crafting. I hear you can make some good money by spirit binding crafting armor.

Make a menu for your tea house. That will help with the immersion but it will also give people an idea of what order. It is just more fun to have a menu for a restaurant type events. I would also recommend having servers, as that helps with the immersion as well. It also gives more role players to interact with. These two things are very simple but they will make your tea house feel more like an event and less like a gathering spot.

Housing: Let our voices be heard!
Flickering Ember replied to Delilah Scythewood's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have the technology to split up wards to go to different servers that need it more. Seems like it could be the case considering they couldn't even create personal housing. (What we got was FC housing with a single bow on top and they called it 'personal' housing) -
The IC/OOC boundary and how to approach it the SMILE way
Flickering Ember replied to g0ne's topic in RP Discussion
I think scenarios like this often become a matter of turning role-play into "my character must win!" The role player is probably not actually thinking that but it is what is happening in practice. I find it hard to believe, for example, that one of the characters wouldn't just get fed up over the arguing and start ignoring the other person, or that they wouldn't run out of things to say, or that they might actually be offended by something that was said. There are a multitude of ways to role-play two characters who don't get along without letting it dominate anyone else's role-play. As much as I love immersion and staying in character as much as possible, sometimes being perfectly IC is not the most fun way to do things either. I find that RP starts to become questionable when it is no longer fun. -
The IC/OOC boundary and how to approach it the SMILE way
Flickering Ember replied to g0ne's topic in RP Discussion
I am a little nervous to post this because I figure this might be an unpopular opinion but here goes. You don't have to agree with me. This post uses all encompassing language though so keep that in mind. My guide on how to keep IC/OOC boundaries: 1. Recognize that breaking IC/OOC barriers is not something that 'other' people do. No one breaks IC/OOC boundaries on purpose and no one realizes they are doing it. You're doing it, I'm doing it, everyone here is doing it at some point big or small. Suggesting that you are impervious to it is akin to saying "People are stupid." Everyone makes mistakes and will continue making mistakes for the rest of their life, even in a hobby in a video game. 2. Recognize that you make mistakes. Recognize that other people make mistakes. Practice humility. Getting emotional during RP is normal but be very careful. Getting emotional over RP can be an indicator that a RP scene is very powerful....or it can be a perfect indicator that we need to walk away from the RP. Give yourself space. Take some time to think on happenings in RP. Not every RP decision needs to be made Now, Now, Now. 3. It isn't my business or anyone else's to tell anyone else how to RP. Everyone roleplays for different reasons. Some people do roleplay wish fulfillments that they can't acquire in real life. A person's entire character can be based around it or just a few small aspects can be wish fulfillments. Is your character pretty where you consider yourself not? Does she have the body type you want but can't have? Does she have the family you want but can't have? I she strong where you aren't? Is she sociable where you aren't? Is she rich and you aren't? There are going to be similarities between you and your character. This is inevitable. They will have wish fulfillments, a few or many, it depends on how your character was made. Recognize what aspects of your character these are. Accept that not everyone will find them as desirable as you do. Unfortunately, the more similarities and wish fulfillments you have will make you more vulnerable (but not guaranteed!) to fall into the trap of OOC/IC boundaries. 4. Now that you have taken a look at the similarities between you and your character. Write out a character profile, make a wiki, write a personality diamond for your character, fill out a questionnaire for your character. Learn your character more. 5. You will break the OOC/IC barrier at some point. Reflect back on your RP and strive for self improvement. Treat others with respect. Treat yourself with respect while still being humble. Don't be a jerk. Don't make others uncomfortable. If you're not sure if something makes someone else uncomfortable, ask. Give your RP partner space if they ask. Do not make everything about you. Be positive and interested in other characters and you will receive the same thing in return. ....But that's not guaranteed and if someone doesn't return your interest then that person is in the right to do so. If you feel uncomfortable speak up! If someone is being a jerk speak up! Don't make assumptions about how other people feel about your character. Don't make assumptions about how other players feel about you OOC. If you're not sure, ask! Assumptions are bad, bad, bad. Example: Player A has been ignoring me! Why does she hate me? Player B: "I've been too shy to approach you!" 6. This guideline applies to me too. Disclaimer: Not really writing this from a romance RP point of view since I don't really do that type of RP. -
40/50 items Think I could get rid of come of my candles and a few other items. I'd really like to have partitions or a thicker treeline. Any recommendations?

I could play as a bandit for you.

Hm. In the thread this conversation originated from, I thought we were talking miqo'te literally being Rped as hyur wearing ear and tail accessories. Now I wonder if Alothia thought I meant city miqo'te/non-tribal miqo'te. But I don't see anything wrong with that at all. Didn't we establish in one of the threads that city miqo'te are more common than tribal miqo'te? Eh, I can't keep up with it all. The core of this discussion, I feel, goes back to craving a variety of stories and characters, not unreasonable. But we can't control what other people play, as much as we try to find that variety. There is little to be done other than being the change you want to see and choosing who you surround yourself with. We can't look down on people for doing something that seems overdone. They are having fun the way they want to. And yeah, I certainly think a non-tribal fits the lore of Eorzea well.

I don't think it has anything to do with legacy servers. Every main RP server in a mmo is like Balmung. Extremely full with server queue times and probably character restrictions. Or at least some point in that mmo's popularity they were. RPers are a small group but we also underestimate ourselves. RP community can more than make up an entire server, even if no non-rpers ever rolled on it. But Balmung is so populated simply because we are the largest sub-community organizing ourselves on one server..Additionally, non-rpers join our server too, either to purposefully be near rp or because they don't know.
-
Recruitment is currently open to all. We would love to see more faces as we make New Year's changes to the FC to help keep things fresh. We are currently looking for roleplayers who not only enjoy participating in others' storylines and roleplay, but enjoy adding others to their own as well. This way we hope to create more member driven, organic RP.

I think that's a reference to the fact that there are a lot of miqo'te characters that aren't informed by (or hew entirely to, depending on who you ask) their racial culture; they're essentially being played as hyur who happen to look like miqo'te. Whether this is bad or incompatible with lore is a topic on which there's some debate. That said, I wouldn't put it past some people to say their miqo'te is actually a hyur wearing cat ears and a tail... The sad thing is that some of us made our characters before this lore was released. Holding that against people who play their Miqo'te that way is just as bad as yelling at people who play seeker males to lore. I don't understand how someone could come to that conclusion, even without racial lore. There are a lot of gaps in racial lore so assuming/making your own fanon seems to be necessary if you want to play a traditional member of your race but be able to expound on your character's history. Not everyone plays to lore, but if you do, I think it is expected to go back and change notes about a character as new lore makes some assumptions/fanon obsolete. Otherwise, you are not playing to lore.

Unfortunately, I don't know if there is any solution that is actually better. In World of Warcraft, Moon Guard being the most popular role-playing server, it was a very full server. Often times it would be locked. In that game, people could still make characters freely on a locked server, but only if they already had a character on that server already. If Final Fantasy were to do it the same way World of Warcraft would do it, we wouldn't be seeing a lot of new faces. But I am not being too imaginative here. Perhaps there could be some other way but for the most part I see this as a necessary evil. SE has to implement population control of some kind because of how big Balmung is. It would have been nice if we had gotten RP tagged servers...

I can't answer your poll without knowing more details. What level is your current character? If your current character is high-level, I would definitely transfer. If they aren't, I would keep trying. Also, I don't think you are trying at the right times, you may want to try at around 8 AM EST

How did your character learn to read/write?
Flickering Ember replied to Seriphyn's topic in Character Workshop
Ember doesn't know how to read. She is blind but she also doesn't know how to read braille. I doubt Eorzea has braille anyway and with most people illiterate, it wouldn't make sense for her to be able to read braille. Considering she grew up as a wild child in the wilds of Thanalan, she is lucky she knows how to talk. -
If we had another small race, I wouldn't have a problem with the concept; Lala's aren't some weird race that stays children forever. But as they are right now, I picture a Lala carrying a pureblood Lala baby the same way a kiwi carries an egg before laying it: Doyouseehowinsanelygiantthateggiscomparedtotherestofthebird?! Yes, they've evolved to handle birthing something that proportionally big, but I can't see how they'd handle something bigger due to breeding with a larger race without complications. And, dear gods, think about Lala's having twins (or more!) with that sort of proportion..! Wait, what? Where are you getting this from? A lalafell baby wouldn't be the size of a regular human baby. A lalafell baby would be proportional to the lalafell body in the same way that a human baby is proportional to a human mother's body. In regards to other posters in this thread commenting on lalafell mothers, I am not seeing how the specifics of the lalafell birthing process would be any more difficult than a human's. A lalafell baby is going to be much smaller than a human's baby... by a lot! I know lalafell have huge heads, but it's not like we have the same size heads our entire life. Or, if people have a thing for bizarre fantasy race biology, then I guess a kiwi could work too. :surprise:

I would say that love is a hugely important aspect for Ember's character. Even when I was first getting to know the character, I already knew that she would be affectionate. Initially, I always considered her affection and love to be a source of selfishness. She isn't that hard to please and on the flipside, can actually be petty if she is given a reason to be. For those who don't know, the concept of my character is that she is this girl who was raised in the wilderness and thus may have a more primal or animalistic view on life. I would definitely say at the beginning her affection towards others was motivated by foods, gifts, and favors. Basically, if you gave her stuff she would like you. Now, I think Ember has developed enough as a character to truly be able to love. She is beginning to consider that part of love is giving back to the other person. She is in a romantic relationship, but she is also asexual and still learning about the concept of dating. She may never look at a romantic relationship the same way as others do. There is still a lot of overall growth potential in this aspect. Other than that, most of the love themes in her role-play revolve around friends and family. These people have become the center of the universe.

I have seen this point made a few times. I wanted to address it. I have seen a few people wondering if it is okay to dislike a race based off a preview/unfinished version. I have also heard this point from several other MMO communities regarding similar topics. At the time it has been brought up, I have found that if I disliked a preview I do end up still disliking the finished product. The short of it is, the developers are not going to release something that isn't even nearly close to being finished. Typically when something like a new race is previewed, any changes from there on will usually be very minor. That, and unless Au Ra are super special and get an amazing amount of customization options that the other races don't get, we can expect their character creator to be very similar to what we have already seen. I sincerely doubt, for example, that they will allow us to change any scale patterns because that just doesn't factor in as a comparative option to the other races. (the horns seem reminiscent of miqo'te tail styles. While possibly color of scales is influenced by hair color) Does that make sense? There is a lot I wonder about. I wonder where on the height sliders the preview characters are. I wonder what kind of horn style selections we will get. I wonder what sort of hairstyles we will get. These are things that could help us change our mind on the race, certainly, but if your dislike of the design goes deeper than that... Then being able to tinker around in a character creator is not going to endear you to them.

It took us a long time to establish in this thread that not only is it okay for people to have differing opinions, but it is also not a good idea to make others feel invalidated for having their opinions. Just because someone doesn't like the race doesn't mean they are being unappreciative. Many video game developers seek out and actively respond to feedback. Nor does simply not liking the race mean that you are abrasive and pessimistic. Maybe I could understand where you are coming from if this was just a random, off-topic discussion elsewhere on the forum. But it's not. This thread is a safe place for discussion, no matter what your opinion is on the new race. When you use this kind of wording,' Even if Au Ra were not being released and Viera was good to be true, we'll have another complaints about how dainty they are. " It makes it sound like we are the bad guys for not liking the same thing as you do. If this was an Au Ra Appreciation Thread I could definitely see how we would be raining on your parade. As it is, no one is trying to smash your cake.

Funny you say that, I only just now saw the tail. Like, I thought that was part of the dress frilly bits... THERE'S A TAIL?! I'm not exaggerating. For all people have claimed miqo'te are just "humes with cat features" they at least look different at a glance. Wait....the astrologian is an Au Ra? I had no idea. Looking at the picture, I still can't tell where her horns are. ....
