  1. Hey!!! Welcome back, you!
  2. I'm kind of intrigued by this idea as well. I'm hesitant to RP any sort of direct tie with Ishgard, however what is known is that Eva's father was a captain of an order of knighthood there, a skilled dragoon (whom I would say fell short of being legendary for the fact that he was not at all charismatic), and left very shortly after she was born. She spent her first 7 years of her life growing up in Coerthas before moving to Gridania with her father where their story continued. The historical ties are there, but I'm not sure that would be precedent enough for her to take up a linkpearl like this. Someone who served back then, or the children of such might recognize the surname 'Zelorius' though, now that she is using it once again. I'd certainly be willing to discuss it further and I'm intrigued by the notion of an IC linkpearl. Her father - the knight - would be about 60-65 years old today if he was still alive (I have his actual nameday and year jotted down somewhere) and Eva is 34 (but time-skipped at Carteneau so was actually born 39ish years ago).
  3. I am in much the same situation. I know Aysun got a lovely picture done and I was taking time to figure things out but haven't received any response to my emails in awhile. I know there were some hardware issues a couple months back and maybe it was worse than it sounded.
  4. Gladly. I was hesitant to proffer such because it's probably more meaningful to come up with this sort of thing yourself and I didn't want to step on your toes in that regard. Please bear in mind these are just a few basic archetypes thrown together over a few seconds' time and are little more than skeletons/framework that you could flesh out with whatever background the character already has coupled with whatever directions you may want to take the character going forward. The sky's the limit there: 1. Scholarly researcher type who has read of A-Towa-Cant and was intrigued and pursues knowledge of the history. 2. Conventional doctor (mundane medicine and first aid and such) who is driven to help a patient and needs to go behind his usual skill set. 3. Carefree spirit who is interested in the Padjal as a people, either historically or perhaps even physically attracted. 4. Born "hearer" who seeks to know more about who he/she is, why they hear the elementals, etc. Could spin on this and treat it as a curse rather than a blessing - "I don't want this talent", etc. 5. Tribal shaman type (would probably work even better for miqo'te given racial similarities however that makes certain assumptions in and of itself) who uses this sort of magic without realizing that it's even aetherial in nature. 6. Student of shaman type from #5 who is more modern-thinking and questions these traditional values and such. I don't see anything wrong with any of these approaches, and you can draw upon different aspects depending if you wanted to focus more on the Padjal as a people and a character fascination with that, or the magic itself, or the "how and why" behind the magic. It all boils down to what you want to do and what's the most fun to you.
  5. In the end this is the same argument that crops up every few weeks/months around here (and the same can be said of some of the other jobs as well) where the game's storyline quest throws lore at us which belies what we see with our own eyes (e.g. "if white mages are so rare, how come I can't run through Ul'dah without spotting fewer than 29 of them?") and there's really no easy answer. For my own part I don't think anyone's explicitly "wrong" in choosing how they want to RP. I sometimes feel people take the storyline lore a bit too literally, and I sometimes feel people take far too much freedom in straying from that. For myself I prefer a middle-of-the-road approach. I deal in abstracts. Eva in-character is a healer. She possesses the ability to mend wounds with aetherial energy. By trade she is a nurse (among other things). I don't think she would ever refer to herself as a "white mage", however she doesn't protest when RPers (generally those from the 'take more freedoms' bunch) address her as such. It can't really be denied that she wears that garb and I see no point in raising a fuss over it. I try to look at it as not the specific thing that the lore says it is, but more as a synonym for a healer - any healer. Or one who uses magic for benevolent purposes (and yes there are a lot of gray areas here as well, pun truly not intended). I just feel like it's inhibitive of RP when folks look too far into things like this. While I enjoyed the quest story arcs, I think it's a little unrealistic to make certain expectations of peoples' RP based upon the lore contained within. There is a lot of room to play around in the abstractions. Maybe "white mage" can be looked upon as something of a synonym to "healer" - and I've certainly seen many different approaches at healing in RP, from crude field medicine, to shamanistic style rituals which may or may not draw upon aether, to the purely aetherial and traditional "white mage" approach that utilizes only magic. There is really no wrong so long as it's interesting and realistic to the world's views of the thing, however you interpret them. To the OP I would encourage you to explore that facet of the character, if it is something that intrigues you - or more aptly if it's something that would intrigue the character. There are always methods to find middle ground with things that may seem implausible. In just a few seconds I was able to think of a good half dozen plausible examples that would work for a variety of different character types that could at the very least pursue a study of white magic in the more "lore-specific" sense as its presented to us. I am of the belief that it's malleable enough to make almost whatever you want of it that you'll enjoy RPing, within the confines of reasonable RP of course.
  6. In the clan of Eva's ancestry it is a tradition that was performed before marriage. To be "marked" one was promising oneself to another and often was done to symbolize the engagement and deter other suitors. There is no basis in lore for this or anything, but it always seemed like a nice custom. There's actually a lot more to it that I'd kind of written in dealing with the colors and meanings but it gets rather involved and it's one of those things I'd much rather discuss in-character anyway, should it ever come up.
  7. There was Everwatch in 1.0, which disbanded. I have heard another group shouting (in Mor Dhona I think) that is comprised of members of the Twin Adders, however offhand I cannot recall the name. I think they were an RP group though, or at least RP-friendly, and I pondered joining myself if it was a LS. I know that's not much help, but if I hear them shouting again I'll try and bump this thread. Mostly just wanted to say that I think such a group is out there.
  8. Until FC Housing prices become more practical, Crystalline has rented a space in the uppermost building at Summerford Farms and many of us can often be found RPing there nowadays. I've struck out the previous post about "Camp Solitude" since it's no longer utilized very much. Our members are in and out of there at various times of the day and we RP that there's a clinic attached to the HQ where some of us treat the wounded and sick. It's all very open-door but we've seen our share of griefers as well and I know many of us are very much looking forward to proper FC housing becoming more readily available. So yep: Crystalline: Summerford Farms :moogle:
  9. It seems all right by me, though I am but one RPer. There is some precedent already in place as the lady of Haukke Manor is clearly a wealthy duskwight woman. I have used that to defend the fact that Eva's father was a wealthy (though not in the traditional flaunty manner) duskwight that lived in the Twelveswood/Gridania. So I don't think what you are suggesting is without merit and it seems like you've already put considerable thought into it. In short, I don't see why not.
  10. Some of us spent some time during the earlier stages of beta (before actual metrics were given) observing and studying this. There's some information and a very helpful chart on THIS THREAD. Here's the graphic that Selene made if it may be of further assistance:
  11. I think the reason for the confusion here lies within the meaning of the phrase 'mortally wounded'. It still sounds like an interesting tale and the topic of trauma and how it applies to RP is one that has always been interesting - since we all generally subject our characters to greater stresses than most would endure in the real world, things like RPing out post-traumatic stress disorder and other such maladies is fascinating. All I can say is that my own character - who time-skipped - has been struggling in her own way to cope with what happened at the events during the Calamity.
  12. Crystalline is still quite active and each day brings new and interesting adventures. :moogle:
  13. This is all kind of moot now. See the post further below. Crystalline has assembled a number of different places so far. What we're using temporarily as a sort of "home base" is an abandoned training facility the Everwatch company ran dubbed Camp Solitude in the Eastern Shroud, a short bit south of Little Solace. We also find ourselves RPing often at the Sanctum Church of Saint Adama Landama, the Sanctum of the Twelve, and some of the various other places, depending on the nature of the events.
  14. These are wonderful!! Great talent!! I was wondering if I might step in line too - if you wouldn't mind a busty duskwight. Info Post Here
  15. I'm eager to be involved, but probably not the best one to kind of tug at the strings for this sort of thing. Eva does not have a very extensive duskwight background and belongs to this group largely out of curiosity and wanting to honor some familial traditions and such. That being said, I'd still love to participate if there is any way that I am able that would make sense.
  16. Ooh, I love quotes!! A few of the more appropriate ones for Eva follow: “Take what you can have, rejoice in what you can save, and don't mourn your losses too long.” ― Robert Jordan “A bone to the dog is not charity. Charity is the bone shared with the dog, when you are just as hungry as the dog.” ― Jack London “One of the deep secrets of life is that all that is really worth doing is what we do for others.” ― Lewis Carol “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” ― Edmund Burke “Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.” ― Kahlil Gibran
  17. I chatted with Kari briefly on Skype yesterday and I believe she still means to start this up, so... stay tuned for more info! (hopefully she doesn't mind me speaking on her behalf like that, but I'll try to prod her to come here later and post some more info)

    FC vs LS

This is kind of how we're probably going to be doing it with Crystalline as well after seeing it in action in Beta, since a couple of our members wanted to join other FC's for varying reasons. Our plan is not really to use the FC chat for anything substantial and keep most of our content/conversation happening over the linkpearl. We're still hammering out all the nuances though since there's that balancing act between wanting to keep an accurate roster and use the FC to its fullest (thus providing perks to those members who remain a part of it), but also not wanting to exclude anyone or leave anyone feeling like a second-class member. It's tough.

    FC vs LS

Everyone is going to have a different opinion on this, I think. For my part, I think a FC geared towards an individual RP group makes a great deal of sense, for the reason the OP mentioned among others (the structured rank listings, etc.) For smaller guilds who might not progress as quickly, it may make sense to cluster together into a FC if leveling up the FC stuff is also a priority. I find the FC buffs to be kind of marginal though (hardly game-altering), and it's been my opinion that these Free Companies are very well suited to some of the RP groups that are out there. The only major draw is that folks can only belong to one and that might hamper membership a bit, particularly for people who like to have the option of belonging to multiple RP guilds.
  20. Family Tree? Yes, got that (but could easily get some screenshots of the various people rather than just names if it'd help): Also super-excited about the Duskwight-only LS, and a group screenshot would be awesome if it's something we could schedule! (although I get the feeling Eva might best be situated along the outer edge lol) I'm sure I could also 'shop something together for the Wiki if Twinflame's got his hands full for awhile.
  21. Here's a few of the cooler ones I was able to get before 3102 struck (these may be clicked to enlarge, and are probably of varying sizes as I tinkered a lot with my resolution settings quite a bit): Coerthas: Mor Dhona: Twelveswood: ...and then I made a clone of Eva on a JP server just so I could check out the housing area, which was pretty sweet: Mist:
  22. Aye, and with the possibility of server transfers a few weeks after launch it's always a good idea to keep an open mind. While I can certainly see the draw to a brand new server, that novelty may wear off in time and switching to another server to change things up will definitely be an option, but only if that's how you feel at that time. As much as I want more Duskwight friends I'm not trying to twist anyone's arm! But it's just something to consider down the road perhaps. To kind of bring the thread back on topic a little bit [or at least help guide it away from ye olde server debacle], I was thinking about something earlier that I'd posted in another thread awhile back pertaining to the enhanced sense of hearing and cave lifestyle. I don't know how other Duskwights RP the hearing thing exactly, but pertaining to Eva, she has a harder time picking out one voice in crowded areas or where there's a lot of background noise. Trying to endure this long enough will eventually result in her getting a headache. Moreover anything really high-pitched, or shrill will also aggravate her, particularly if it's enduring. For awhile there were a couple of aetherite nodes that were purple (where most of the rest were blue) - such as the one to get to the Bowl of Embers from 1.0. Eva would get a headache if she remained around it for more than just a few minutes because of the noise. I've heard others suggest that duskwights might have better night vision than the other races/clans, but I've seen nothing in the lore to really substantiate this other than the assumption that their eyesight might have adapted over a long period of time for low light conditions. Without anything directly referenced I've been hesitant to make any sort of assumption about her ability to see in the dark. She does suffer a minor case of hyperopia (farsightedness) enough such that she requires spectacles to read - which she does a lot. It's another of those things she's self-conscious about. Her father from the age of 30 or so suffered photophobia, having to wear shaded spectacles when going outdoors (and later in his life even indoors as well). I'm not sure if there's any lore basis for this or if it's even a duskwight thing or something specific to him, but it seemed worth making mention of as well. He would get terrible headaches after even only a few minutes of exposure to daylight - even on an overcast day. That crossed my mind earlier today and I figured I'd throw it out there. Another thing I've wondered - do you suppose we experience sunburn more easily than other clans? Given the paleness of her skin, I once stated after she moved to Ul'dah that she got a really bad sunburn, but this got me thinking about how even those duskwights with darker gray skin might face exposure to the sun. Also any other interesting medical angles or conditions you think we might face as a result of being a duskwight?
