Roleplayer Uncertainty/Insecurity Theater
Koro Dotharl replied to Warren Castille's topic in Character Workshop
My biggest insecurity is being judged. That's why I avoid judging others because I know how much it sucks to feel like that. Over a dumb game nonetheless. Before playing in FFXIV I used to RP in a very insular community and the slightest slip could get you harassed. The FF community is much more friendly and open minded, but I am still on my toes about a lot of things and interacting with others can be difficult at first. Or maybe it's not in the lore but just what I do (people saying they don't like [thing] therefore I am bad), who I talk to, where I RP etc. I have learned that no matter who you are and what you do, there will always be haters either for reasons or none whatsoever. It could be that you once trusted those haters. So I am trying to ignore these things and do what I enjoy, but I will always worry about other people having fun with me and sometimes the smallest compliment is all it takes to make all these bad thoughts go away. -
Group Greatness - PUG Victories and Other Battle Stories
Koro Dotharl replied to Steel Wolf's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Aside from the occasional bad pug I have found the FFXIV community to be more pleasant than WoW overall. I often warn the group that I am new to the instance and never got flack for it. People actually explain the fights and help me learn so that I may teach the fight to others in turn. I also try to talk with the group a little bit and they usually chat back. It's amazing! On WoW, that never happened to me. -

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Koro Dotharl replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Generally if there are new players with the sprouts next to their name a quick explaining usually let them know what they are supposed to do and they usually try their best to shine and improve. But when I pug with "crowned" players, it usually means that I am going to be pushed to my limits (I tank and heal both, but rarely que as DPS) because they want to rush. They ignore basic mechanics because they either can't be arsed or they expect me to face-roll it as much as they do and when it turns out I can't, pug drama ensues. So I personally came to expect bad behavior from veterans rather than new players. New players are often ignorant of the mechanics but a vet performing bad is..Often with the intent of being a burden on purpose and that is so, so much worse. -
The first message I saw upon login after hours of maintenance was someone flipping houses for 75M. They weren't even subtle about it and reportedly someone bought them. Not only should we report such behavior but people shouldn't yield and buy from the mafia either. I do hope the GMs are looking into this? It's bad enough to find home with a legit competition (by design there shouldn't be competition in the first place but alas).

I. Basic Info Characters: Koro Dotharl; Hisako Miura; Claudette Zeataux; Zana Feniq Primary character: Koro Dotharl Linkshells: Sonder Primary RP linkshell: Sonder II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): I have heavy and medium phases. Depending on which plots I am currently involved in or how invested I am in certain in-game activities. I accept posts of any length but the speed of my answer can vary depending on how much I have to answer to and I humbly ask patience in that regard. Views on RP combat and injuries: I personally prefer to avoid arguments through the use of /random but anything goes, really. I do enjoy RP battles and if you want to use a specific ruleset, you only have to ask! I am open to all kind of injuries and consequences to combat but I'd rather have an OOC talk when it comes to permanent consequences such as death and/or crippling. I am a firm believer that the players deserve full control on their characters' own development and that consent should always be asked for if you want to inflict such an important change to someone's story. Views on IC romance: I enjoy romance but only with people that do not blend. I require people to RP with me for quite some time to make sure they aren't the type to take the romance to creepy ooc levels. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): It is something I am open to do. But I have very high standards when it comes to give people a spot in my characters' families because there are not many positions to give out and a member going inactive all of sudden or behaving ooc dramatic can ruin the plot. So like with the case of IC romance, I must have know each player for a very long time in order to trust them enough to do this. Views on lore: Very important. Regulates all I do and what my characters are and sometimes I will hold back from doing a concept if I believe it's too rare in-universe or outright lore-breaking. That said, I am a firm believer of creative liberties and freedom of self-expression thus I only get vocal under extreme circumstances. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): /say, /yell and /em are 100% IC channels to me. Unless I am goofing around in an instance. /tell could be both depending on context. Linkshells can be either IC or OOC. /shout is almost always OOC since non RPers use it like a general chat. III. Other Info Country: Italy - EU Timezone: UTC +01:00 Contact info: I will always answer to private messages sent from this website. I'm not sure which kind of wounds your character have suffered but death is not the only way to realistically portray the consequences of this beating. Unless you personally wish to take the chance to end her story. It's not just the physical consequences but also the psychological ones. A near-death experience can frighten someone to the point of changing them on an emotional level. The dynamics and the details of this vary for person to person, but such a terrible experience can traumatize someone. People that suffered from heart attacks have been know to never have been the same afterwards, for instance. If you don't think it's part of her character to be affected this deeply, you could resort to cripple her either temporally or permanently. I have done something similar on other characters of mine.

Ah don't worry it's not about that at all! I just don't feel confident about it anymore for a couple of reasons. One being that I am anxious by nature and would constantly worry about people thinking I am a sknowflake. The woes of having a fragile personality. Perhaps someone more expeienced and thick skinned could recycle this cocnept. I don't mind. The more RPers do it right the easier it will be for others to take example. It just can't start with me.

After a lot of thinking, I have decided not to go through with this idea and to play a simple swordsman instead. While we did established that it is indeed possible for an Au'ra dark knight to be made, the necessary IC loopholes, the lore bending and the suspension of belief required to all that would interact with me are in my opinion not worth it. When I first came up with the idea, I had figured it would be much more simple but I underestimated the importance that Ishgard have to this job, a city and a society that does not appeal to me in the slightest. And thus I can't RP something so bound to that place (or well, I don't want to). I could have gone through with "the mentor is an exile" route, but I don't think I should. I do not usually take issues with bending the lore a little bit (thus proposing this idea in the first place) but there are limits to how much something can bend before you break it. And I believe this is where I draw the line for myself and my own standards. It is true that some valid arguments were made in favor of the concept, but it would make me feel too much like Sidurgu. A lore figure that is special even by his main character standards. And that is not something I am comfortable to roleplay AS (not with, mind. I will never say what others can and cannot do, my point is about what I am doing for myself and my own enjoyment). In the past few days, I have read many awesome posts of people offering their kindness and advice and some sent me very supportive PMs that gave me hope and inspired me to try write more about it. And that is why posting this is a bit difficult for me, I do hope they wont feel betrayed. But ultimately I shall put the lore above my own desires, least I end up RPing in another universe altogether before I realize it. Even within the boundaries imposed by myself and the lore I am sure I can still make a character worth RPing with and as, which I am eager to present! But please do not think all of this talk was for naught. If it wasn't for the feedback I read in here, I would have gone through with it and again, I would have still come to this conclusion. The harsh way. So thank you everyone for your wisdom and support! I'll be seeing you in Eorzea and beyond.

That is correct! My character's main drive is to challenge injustice without concern of what or who does the deed. She want to spare people from the same abuse she believe to have suffered and would to go to great lengths to do this. This side of my character have been there before I took an interest to the DRK job, which I chose because I believe it fits her like a glove. Philosophically speaking, that is. So in this case it's the character before the job. Perhaps that is the problem here for the most part. As to where, my idea is that by not being a formally knighted DRK would allow her to travel and seek evil wherever it is, so I don't have a precisely detailed answer. She may have business anywhere, really. Because she have no ties to Ishgard and it is her mentor the one that should answer the question (the answer beign he got exiled). Or atleast that is just an idea we are discussing and tuning regularly as lore and criticism comes up, I haven't actually role-played anything just yet so everything can still change overnight. Caspar already gave a better answer than I possibly could make, but I believe it clashes against the whole thing since I am trying not to be glued to Ishgard in particular by branching out from a formal Ishgardian knighthood for the sake of a nomad one that follows the scent of evil. That said this exiled mentor could have easily traveled to Othard and he and my character may only have moved to Eorzea recently as per the recent events. This is to avoid making my character a pre 3.0 Au'ra since it would be a bit too much on top of what she already is. I do agree that her training might be a recent thing. That she likely just finished her training and her travel to Eorzea is her first attempt at doing this on her own. I am hesitant to go with the "still in training" route because I am not confident in pulling it off. People will probably ask the where and when the training happens or even attempt to join the plot. And those simple questions suddenly becomes very complicated to answer to. So things are as Sounsyy put it, pretty much. Thank you! I am doing my best to make this work but it's more complicated than I originally thought. That said I am enjoying this debate and lore always comes first.

I have silently observed the debate and I believe that some legitimate issues about this concept have been brought up, which I hope to solve with this new addition to the backstory: That being, giving a backstory to the mentor too. Perhaps if I give him more reasons to do what he did than what I currently gave out (which is very little, admittedly) my character's job could have a more solid footing. Dark Knights have to operate in Ishgard, and in secret. They root out the corrupt by breaking the law and often through murder, thus said secrecy is vital for the order to survive the Holy See's wrath. But what if my character's mentor killed someone too important for him to get away with it (Mind that I am not talking about nobody that appeared or was even mentioned in the game or it's lore. Just an high-ranked knight or even a wealthy noble, perhaps)? Or perhaps a witness got away and talked. Now his cover is blown and the rest of his fellow knights will be discovered and killed too if he doesn't escape. Least the damage would have been severe on them all. So this Dark Knight leads the chase as far away from his companions as he possibly could: Outside Coerthas. Technically he is not a Dark Knight anymore for he is basically exiled from Ishgard, but he still have his skills and motivations to go on with and fixes the wrongs he stumbles upon. Now there's no reason for him not to take an apprentice of any race. He is stripped of his obligations to Ishgard (not by choice but because many years will have to pass before the ripples he caused calms down) and as a DRK, rebelling to most of Ishgardian customs is part of what he does, so I am of the opinion he wouldn't have any sort of race hate against others (everyone are equals in justice). Enters my character. He trains her in the same philosophy and skill-set that a Dark Knight would have, but without the title. She can't be knighted proper because: Not only is she a non-ishgardian, but her mentor is also an exiled without access to other knights that may cast approval on a new face in the order, plus other reasons that many could come up with. But she still would have all the motives, the mentality and the arts required to do what they do, and so they act on their own without following official rules which still fits with how the job works with or without title. What do you guys think of this addition? If you heard this in roleplay, would you keep your suspension of belief and find it plausible, whether you like it or not on a narrative level? Does it give enough reason for my character to be what she is (or would be)? Problems weren't addressed in the fourth draft that this one solves: It is not a Dark Knight in the formal sense. Thus it does not violate the character of the actual job while still accessing it's assets. The timeline is less of an issue because the mentor could have had his accident at any point during my character's life. The he would meet her after the ordeal. It removes Ishgardian ties from my character other than the origins of what my mentor teaches, to which he is free to share. Due to said mentor's exile, they still wouldn't have access to Ishgard itself and thus no reason to force her interact with the nation prior to the present times at all. I can have some backstory out and about the Calamity without needing to worry too much about where/when/how my character did things. Without the title, the character loses the more RP-limiting obligations that comes with it (such as being technically bound to Coerthas). Thus I would need less reasons to be around and more RP possibilities open up. Still this is not "perfect" by any means, but I believe it is atleast a bit better and is respectful towards actual DRK RPers and the lore itself, I hope. Your thoughts are welcome and I'll ponder on whether or not go through with this based on the feedback I receive on this. I do not wish to make too much noise and I hope this solution is pleasant to atleast those that read it.

I do not have knowledge on the lore of which specific tree they consider sacred, so I avoided putting too much details and assumed the tree is common enough to grow in Eorzea aswell. Or perhaps it's not even about the species but a certain tree that the tribe choses. Either way I found safe not to mention what makes it important to them, just that it is. Hopefully SE will release some lore that will help me clarify this plot-hole. I also do notice now that perhaps it's too convenient for a Dark Knight to just be there and help, but I am afraid that the character in the second draft is indeed too self absorbed to resist her Darkside. My fourth draft does have elements of that personality but if trained earlier on in life she will survive it a bit longer. As for why would a knight take interest in the affairs of savages, well. Perhaps he simply took pity of a young child tied to a tree. I am remaining vague about this knight motivations in case someone wishes to RP him or her or at least the future possibility is there.

Greetings everyone. It's been a while since I opened a thread in these halls but now I am back in the community with a new character that needs a little help. I am currently writing a backstory for my Au Ra Dark Knight, and all went well for a while (chose the Tumet clan; established what she was before becoming a DK, her personality etc) but I noticed that I have been changing the circumstances of her soulstone a lot, and that is because she is obviously not ishgardian hence it is very difficult to write something that is not forced or "convenient". So that's where I need help. I have taken a look at the RPCwiki and I have seen some Auri roleplayers that pulled it off successfully and got accepted in the community and that's where I aspire to be. But none of them went into too much detail about their actual origin as a Dark Knight. Thus I have to ask: What is/would be your approach in making a non-ishgardian Dark Knight? If you don't want to type your characters' spoilers out in the public you can PM it to me, I just need a little inspiration for my own character. I have written a few versions of her ascension that needs to be lore-checked: These are by no means set in stone or even among the ones I will use for my backstory. Just what I came up with. I am more than willing to accept more lore-friendly ideas or make modifications where criticism demands it. 'Tis why I made the thread in the first place! I thank you all in advance and I am eager to hear your feedback.

How did you discover or get YOUR powers/abilities?
Koro Dotharl replied to Yunas13's topic in RP Discussion
Sounds like fun! But also expensive. How many fantasia do you use in a few months? -
She lost her sight In battle. An explosion got her unprepared and the shards hit her face quite bad, including the eyes. This happened on the open sea and it took a couple of days to sail back to where she could be treated properly, so it wasn't a prompt intervention, which i presumed would greatly lower the chances to fully restore her even trough magic. Hence resorting to aether-vision/getting clues from the presence of the elements. But the eyes are still there.

I didn't expected so many answers, which is a welcome surprise. However I apologize for the title and the wording I used which seems to have ringed some bells I didn't meant to touch. But rest assured that I am not RPing blindness, but a character with a past, dignity and opinions who happen to have it. It didn't, don't worry! And my concern were more on the lore side of sight trough conjury rather than the blindness that makes it necessary, which I'm sure wont ruin my char's personality. And I return the desire to RP together! Totally am Also i edited the title so that it is straightforward to the subject and more sensitive towards the theme

I submitted an application too, let's hope!

I thank you all for the feedback and I'm glad to know I'm not breaking anything! I really think i will do this now and shall write up the rest of the backstory, perhaps our characters could meet indeed. Also thank you Maia for that youtube channel (and your experience), it gave me some facts to apply in my RP. That would be a fun first meeting!

Greetings. Like the title says, I am considering to face this challenge but I have a doubt about how my character would adapt to this disability. I know that conjurers have a deep bond with the elements (and nature in general), they feel their presence beyond what the five senses offer in exchange of the conjurer's aid. Thus I was thinking about my toon orientating herself by sensing the energy of the elements to detect obstacles, water to drink and the placement of people trough the wind they move around them, with little use for the other senses other than hearing. I feel that this would be useless in cities because nature withdraw from those heavily colonized places In which men defy the elements (with the exception of Gridania and surroundings?), returning her to darkness. Naturally, this doesn't make my character able to run around and 1v1 gladiators. Rather, she would be able to walk with little hassle and follow people around without needing others to slow down (thus making the RP less frustrating for others, that's the idea). Mind she is not directly talking with the elements, just sensing their presence around her, humbly "observing" for guidance while hearing the occasional plea for purification like other conjurers does (because as far as I'm aware, direct constant communication with them is a very rare gift that I'm not gonna claim). And for last, she would be able to summon the elements in combat like other people do but that's not something she would do often considering she wouldn't be able to see who she is shooting at! Rather, she would heal the injured. Would you enjoy to RP with this character and if not is it because this idea is not within the boundaries of lore? I seek and welcome your feedback!

Thanks again for the greets and the cat in my avatar isn't mine unfortunately, but I do have two running around the house! Right now I'm still looking around and my character is still in development so I'm very open to everything (another way to say that I'm lost in this sea of choices ), and might post some questions about ideas I have for the character (if that's fine) before I engage but adventuring sounds nice.

Hello everyone, I have been lurking in these forums for a while and decided to make the firsts steps for engage in RP. Although I never role played in this game before, I have some experience with the concept thanks to the years passed in WoW and D&D. Hopefully it will help me out even if this lore is much different than what i'm used to, which I find exciting! I thank you all for reading.
