  1. You mean Byregot? 'cause like, he's totally Byregot, and his wife Julyan is almost certainly Menphina. Yesh. Mein headcanon. On a serious note... Ramuh. "We just want to be left alone, GTFO."
  2. Folks should be receiving, if they haven't received already, their expansion registration codes today via email. I hear NA has gotten theirs already, and can collaborate that as I've received mine. Haven't heard whether other regions have received their emails. Baaaaaahhh! Hopefully don't get caught up in this when I purchase the expac for PS4 tomorrow.
  3. Mobility isn't supposed to put you on par. A mobile class trades in damage for safety. On an anecdotal note, I've had BRDs surpass me in damage during instances that either had me losing GL3 at key points in a fight or else during instances where I was not at liberty to take advantage of gains from positional bonuses. Would I catch back up again? Yes, but only once I was at liberty to do so without undue risk. EDIT: I agree, though, in that ideally all DPS classes should have a similar damage ceiling when played optimally with a tunnel-vision focus on damage-dealing, with slight variations on which class deals more damage depending on their respective specialties.
  4. My understanding of game design is that melee damage dealers should always deal more damage than ranged damage dealers based on risk vs. reward. A melee character is going to more at risk, given how most MMORPGs heavily feature enemies that have close-range damage skills, AoE or otherwise, that force melee characters to play it safe or risk dying. In return for skillful play that risks death, they come out with dividends. FFXIV:ARR had a perfect example of this in the PGL class and MNK job: you had to occasionally take risks to keep up your most important buff, or else your damage would fall off significantly. Contrast this with ranged characters. Typically, you have two types of ranged damage dealers: the casters/channelers, and the instant damage types. Casters and channelers are generally designed with a higher DPS ceiling, since they also incur risks. If they don't plan well ahead of time, they have to break their casts/channels, resulting in damage falloff. Ranged instant damage characters, on the other hand, are the safest damage dealers. They are typically mobile, there's never a moment in they cannot deal damage as they have no melee range requirement nor a time requirement. As such, to balance out the fact that they are constantly contributing and the skill floor is much lower, they typically deal less DPS on average. End result: ranged having less DPS output potential than melee is always a case of "working as intended" unless a game is designed such that risk does not increase with proximity to an enemy or unless extra mobility does not make one class safer than other. EDIT: I'm not touching Machinist with this post. If it's underpowered, it's underpowered and will eventually be addressed/fixed.
  5. Regarding NIN: Armor Crush combos off of Gust Slash for a total of 220 potency without the positional or for 280 with. But that's not what's important. What's important is that the combo bonus extends Huton by 30s to a max of 70s. That more or less makes Armor Crush mandatory for optimal DPS rotation, since it frees up mudra for use in casting Raiton/Doton/Suiton ninjutsu. And since you'll be using AC anyway, you'll want to snag the flanking positional bonus for the extra potency. The positionals for NIN still aren't as demanding as the ones on MNK are, since the latter's weaponskills don't branch into different combos so much as they weave in and out of each other, and each "step" has a number of positionals that require different positions for optimal DPS output. Counting Trick Attack, Armor Crush, and Aeolian Edge, that's three positionals to a Monk's six. On top of that, Trick Attack has a 60s cooldown. In comparison, each and every one of MNK's positionals is a standard 2.5s GCD. So it's really more like two-and-change positionals to six. And even then, most of the combo components for NIN don't have positional requirements.
  6. I haven't hopped into HW yet but I've been hearing folks in linkshells advocating VIT or maybe even PIE for DRK. The former given that consensus seems to be that it's a squishier tank than PLD or WAR, the latter given its constant need for MP.
  7. Iranian here, fairly certain "Arslan" meaning "lion" was originally a Turkish word before everyone started borrowing it. That said, there is the Persian epic of Amir Arsalan, but there are no connections to lions in that tale as far as I know. Fun fact: "Shere Khan" from Jungle Book translates as, "King of Lions" in at least one language. [Admin Hardhat] Back on-topic we go, shall we? Tumet! [/Admin Hardhat]
  8. So for a while now we've had separate and distinct boards for Balmung events/directories and Gilgamesh events/directories. This was a holdover from 2013, and while it served its purpose, this structure had a few problems: No space for players from less-populated servers to post their events and directory listings. Segregation of community by dint of forum separation. Redundancy, particularly in light of the recent rise of Gilgamesh-RP.com After consulting both staff and patrons, we've opted to merge these boards together. Balmung Events and Gilgamesh Events have been merged into Roleplay Events. Balmung Directory and Gilgamesh Directory have been merged into Player Directory. Furthermore, server tag prefixes have been enabled for threads. What this means is that, when creating a new thread or editing the original post of a thread, you can select the server for your event/listing from a "Prefix" dropdown. This allows for denotation of servers in a visible and easy-to-manage manner. At the moment, available prefixes are as follows: Balmung Gilgamesh Siren Moogle Famfrit Hyperion Jenova Should you require additional server tags - perhaps you roleplay on Lamia, for example - please send a Private Message to either myself or FreelanceWizard, and we'll see to it that your server gets added to the dropdown list. We hope this will allow for continued use of these boards by Balmung and Gilgamesh while simultaneously creating a space for other servers and their communities. As always, should you have any concerns, questions, or suggestions, please send staff a Private Message. Thank you!
  9. ~Thirty-Odd Cycles Past~ The young midlander male scratched at the back of his head as he stared down at the arrangement of pieces on the…. He could not rightfully call it a “board,” not even in his thoughts. What lay before him on the stone surface that served as their table was not a square field but a circular progression of three concentric rings. The device was carved of a wood foreign to him, as were the various pieces, each shaped roughly after a demonic figure. Tall men and short women of various poses, horned and tailed one and all, adorned the field. He’d understood the dilemma at the heart of this game from the moment he’d first sat down to it, suns ago. From the center, one could strike out at the rest of the board swiftly and easily… but gathering one’s forces at the center also meant that retaliations could come from any quarter and at any time. Subsequently, many of the worthy stratagems he’d learned since arriving advocated a series of feints, bluffs, and maneuvers to disquiet the opponent and unnerve them into taking a foolish misstep. Perhaps they position poorly, perhaps they fail to gather adequate strength at a key juncture. Inevitably, a mistake is made, so best to provoke the other army into erring first. Then, with all due haste, one could strike decisively and claim the center in order to hunt down the remaining pieces of one’s opponent. The trick, then, was not to control the center or the outer fringe, but rather the strip of land between them. He glanced up at the… thing… that sat across from him. The demon – the tall, living and breathing demon - grinned at him. No ill intent there; though his first glance had had him reaching for his sword, he’d come to understand that the foul appearance of these folk was… not foul at all. A preconception, based on his own experiences. Bias, if one got right down to it. He couldn’t afford bias. Not if this ploy to play merchant and enrich his life was to succeed. An aspiring businessman needs customers, and he’d come halfway around the world in search of them. Most traders who left Aldenard by way of Vylbrand, he’d learned moons ago, sailed west. The Mamool Ja were there, among others, the flow of commodities was steady and assured, and profit was decent. The more venturous would sail east to the island nation of Thavnair, and stop. From there, they would return with much that was rare, valuable, or fashionable in the city-states of Eorzea. He’d assessed his options, gauged his chances, and decided to take boldness to the point of insanity. He had hired the most boisterous, daring crew he could find… and had them sail him even further east. Here, now, the demon across from the midlander shifted in place, knees on his elbows and his long tail slowly swishing back and forth in the grass. His dark scales glistened in spite of the pitched tent that sheltered them. A crowd comprised of others of this one’s clan had surrounded them, male and female, and even now they were hooting and jeering and placing bets. Strange items passed hands: strings, strips of leather, bones, and the occasional gem. The demon’s grin faded, and he made that odd jerking motion of the head off to one side and back, like a nod that suddenly swerved until the skull was horizontal, the motion that the midlander had come to understand was a gesture of impatience, a gesture that signaled the impending use of a demon’s horns. Move, or I’ll run you through. “Wishes you to choose. Many moments have passed.” The crowd fell silent. The midlander turned his gaze slowly to regard the other demon, the larger one sitting to one side who had been watching the game play out with the excitement and interest of a child who’d just learned that magic was real. This one, the male that had been serving as his translator since his arrival, wore his hair long and in matted coils. The length of his horns spoke to his age, and the scars that adorned his arms and his chest spoke to his experience and prowess in battle. There were precious few scars on this one’s back. “Mönkhbaatar,” he responded, “the herd-need is not upon me yet, and so I choose to graze.” This, he’d been taught, was the polite way of conveying that he was deep in his considerations. The Baatar shrugged. “Dusk Mother will not wait forever. Neither will Khudus.” “Khudus did not issue challenge, I did. He would lay claim to my wares without trade.” “Demanded proof before Dawn Father. Wishes to see worth. Whether more than mere beast.” “As did the five others before him,” the Hyur grumbled. “Yes, this I know.” The midlander sneaked a glance at Khudus. “Then why must I make haste?” Mönkh pushed himself to his feet and stretched to his full height, all seven fulms of him. “Herd-need is upon him. Has set eyes on prize. Gerel. A beauty, that one. Khudus believes wares will win her--“ The tall demon blinked. “Accent fen? Adder sun?” The midlander looked up and squinted. “…attentions? Adoration?” Mönkhbaatar barked a laugh and suddenly dropped to his knees, impacting the dirt and the grass with a large, dull thud. “Yes.” The Hyuran man scoffed. “Must I go through this with each and every one of you? I came to trade, not to play!” “Our way. Our… path.” “But surely, you do not issue challenges to each other this often! I’ve seen you trade together. Gamble, even! And not once a game.” Mönkh stared at him as if he were insane, or perhaps a wild jackal on the outskirts of one’s homestead. “You are outsider. You are…Hyur. No choice. You must challenge. We are clan. We are Malqir. Challenge for Malqir is choice.” “Is that why you refuse to game with me?” The Baatar harrumphed. “Kharaqiq not sacred, but close. To play is to challenge. To challenge is to boast skill of mind. Lose, and you are less. Win, and you are more. He who wins most leads. Head of clan. Head of clan, lose?” The demon shook a hand, his peoples’ gesture for dissent. “Clan comes first. Clan needs Mönkhbaatar. Will not play. Not with… Hyur. You are not….” “…Xaela,” finished the midlander with a sigh. “Unheard of. Clan disgraced beneath Dawn Father, cursed by Dusk Mother.” “…for Xaela, for Malqir, challenge is choice.” “Yes.” “For Hyur, for outsider, no choice.” “Yes.” “I am not Xaela.” “No.” The man turned his eyes on the demon across from him. On Khudus. “…what if I were Malqir?” The tent erupted in chaos. Jeers and banter turned to insults and heated debate. Some of the males began throwing their weight around, quite literally. The females pressed in against each other and crowded around the Baatar and spoke in whispers, some harsh as granite, others smooth as silk. The young midlander could not help but laugh; that he could not grasp their tongue, but these folk could understand his… for the first time in suns, he did not find himself at a disadvantage. Mönkhbaatar barked a few words, and the Au Ra fell silent. He looked to Khudus… who was stone-faced. The younger demon had gone rigid at the question. Mönkhbaatar chattered his teeth, and Khudus jumped, surprised. The clan-head sighed and turned back to the Hyur. “Khudus tests you. Now you test clan in turn. I say let Gerel come forth, and choose.” Whispers started up again as a young female pushed her way out of the crowd. She was small, with hair as black as night and dark, curved horns that framed her face. Her eyes were the color of sapphires. She took one long look at the midlander, then another at the board. To Khudus she did not look, not even once. She spoke, many sentences, an occasional inflection here and there. She ended on a question. The Baatar nodded. “Gerel speaks. She says, few lose to Khudus. To lose to Khudus? That is low. Lower than a beast. Yet even Khudus knows Kharaqiq well. Better than most Xaela. Are you man or beast?” The midlander smirked. “What if I can win in three moves?” Mönkh translated for him. The female squinted, then spoke. “Then not so low as beast.” The Hyuran man leaned forward where he sat and met the woman’s eyes. “What if I can win in one?” The Baatar blinked. He translated. She blinked. She spoke a single word. The large male hissed, but clapped once. “Show her.” The man who’d crossed an ocean to make his fortune reached out to the piece he’d been eyeing earlier, a smaller, lesser demon that shared blue limbal rings with the rest of his pieces. He picked it up and moved it across the board, through a gap between two large demons with red limbal rings, and placed it just inside the center circle, on the spot closest to Khudus. “From here, he must fall back to deal with my scout. To do so is to open his flank to me, and I would carve him for my meat. To ignore my scout will lose him the Baatar the very next turn, and without his hero, mine will crush his tribe. There is no third outcome. From here on out, I win, regardless of his choice. The decision is mine.” Shocked silence fell upon the audience as they inspected the board, eyes roaming over it, playing the game out in their heads. Moments stretched until they felt like bells. Then Gerel giggled and shattered the still air like glass. Khudus grunted and his shoulders sagged. Mönkhbaatar turned to the Hyur and regarded him for a further eternity. “You play well, Cenric of Thanalan,” spoke the clan-head at last. “Gerel acknowledges you. Malqir accepts you. For you, now, challenge is choice.” The midlander - who would, within a moon, set sail to Vylbrand and, once there, fall in love with a serving wench - gave Mönkhbaatar his best grin. The Auri male grinned back.
  10. Discussing game mechanics, quest requirements, crafting, and things of that nature should be fine. We only ask that any information pertinent to new story content or new lore be scrutinized and placed in spoilers if necessary. I highly doubt "you need five of X item and six of Y to craft commodity Z" qualifies as spoiler-worthy. Likewise for any lore that might be attached to crafting classes/jobs or anything in a similar vein.
  11. The community is going to be moving into brand new content with Heavensward. This will naturally include Main Story Quest content, which will be ripe with spoilers. We ask that everyone be considerate of the fact that many members will be going through the 3.0 story at their own pace. What this means is the following: Do Not Post Spoilers in Thread Titles Tag Your Thread Titles with [spoilers] At The Beginning If They Contain Spoilers Make Use of Spoiler Tags in Your Posts Where Appropriate Moderators Reserve the Right to Strictly Enforce the Above The Only Exception to the Above is the Town Square (IC) Board. Thank You for Your Understanding!
  12. Keep me off the record for now, please. At least until I can snag my desired Xaela name via name change.
  13. Oh, my mistake then. Going to be rolling a Moks, myself, though... with some major caveats. Some of them potentially lore-breaking. All of them on the down low. Looking forward to seeing other Xaela!
  14. People do this all the time already with aliases, though, especially people RPing criminals. How's this any different? Just curious. *nameplate says Osric Melkire* *Osric comes into one-on-one contact with someone he's never met before* "Call me Thomys."
  15. Pffffff, f*** that. I'll be using the Moks surname and tagging my search edit info with the name of the clan I'm infiltrating. I think that'd work better than the other way around, since it'd more visible to other Moks Xaela that way. The Xaela clan one regularly RPs with should be fine with it OoCly, I'd expect. Anyone breaking character to know that you're Moks when they haven't been told or found out ICly is, well... breaking character. As for their purpose? INTELLIGENCE GATHERING. MOKS CONFIRMED FOR PLAYING THE LONG GAME. INFILTRATE, LEARN WEAKNESSES, SUBVERT OR CONQUER.
  16. Assuming the original time holds, Friday, 2:00 AM PDT Friday, 3:00 AM MDT Friday, 4:00 AM CDT Friday, 5:00 AM EDT Friday, 9:00 AM GMT Assuming it's been pushed back to 9 am PST (I have no source), Friday, 9:00 AM PDT Friday, 10:00 AM MDT Friday, 11:00 AM CDT Friday, 12:00 PM EDT Friday, 4:00 PM GMT
  17. 2:00 AM U.S. Pacific Time on Friday morning the 19th was when Maintenance was supposed to end. It is currently 2:00 PM U.S. Pacific Time on Thursday afternoon the 18th. You got at least another twelve (12) hours to go. More, if they've pushed it back
  18. [Admin Hardhat] Edited the thread title to be clear that this contains both official tribes from Square-Enix as well as custom player-conceived ones. [/Admin Hardhat]
  19. No, you just need to be level 1 and log in.
  20. In light of anticipated traffic that typically comes with expansions for MMORPG communities, we've brought on provisional staff to help keep things tidy, organized, and civil as we move forward into Heavensward content. More hands and eyes on the team means more presence on the forums for members to reach out to if they need anything. Please welcome Unnamed Mercenary and Nero as new moderators. We're expecting some fumbling as they get used to moderation tools, but do look to them as well as the rest of us for anything you might need! Reports, Private Messages, etc. Please also note that there is a "Forum Team" link just above the "Who's Online?" section on the main index directory page that will bring up a full list of current staff. As always, any questions, comments, or concerns should be sent to the administrator (that's me) via Private Message or e-mail. I'll make sure they're addressed and will forward them to the staff for round-table discussion if necessary.
  21. Staff has deliberated on forum and board organization, so we'll be seeing some changes shortly and in good order. First and foremost is the separation of the old "Headlines" board into Forum Announcements and FFXIV News. This should help keep threads better organized and allow for improved visibility of staff news while allowing a space for people to gush about XIV's latest. Please note that while only administrators and moderators can post threads in the Forum Announcement boards, all registered members can reply to the threads here if the administrator or moderator in question leaves the thread unlocked. Also, unlike on other boards, topics here on Forum Announcements will always be sorted by thread creation date, meaning that the most recent will appear at the top of the board. Thank you, and please look forward to further improvements.
  22. June Status Report Lots to mention. New recruits to the not-so-free company, new pearl holders for the linkshell, Grand Company assignments to Copperbell, Halatali, Qarn, and Cutter's (not to mention that one time Swift lent us out to the Adders to deal with disturbances in the Deepcroft, that bastard)... even headed north for a spell to lend aid against Dravanian incursions. Ran afoul of a few moral quandaries while up there. Even when pitted against dragons, things can't be simple! Blah! Most of the Dauntless have returned to Ul'dah to recuperate, reassess, and recollect their strength and their courage for what might be a long campaign in the north. Someone mentioned a warm beach somewhere. We are still accepting applicants for both the company and the linkshell!
  23. ATTENTION: The directory has been pruned and updated for the Month of June! If you wish to be put back on the list, simply post again! I was late. I blame staff transition. ._.
  24. Isn't that the Bene-like ability that gives like a flat 50%(?) of the targets health back? You're being healed with Tetragrammatons of force! Tetragrammaton is totally a measure of aetheric healing, right? Like, grammatons are a lot and Tetragrammatons are four times that. So that's four lots. I hate how they've chosen an epithet for God that has its roots in Greek. Makes it sound related to mathematics and geometry. As a result, it sounds like a skill name more apt for SCHs than WHMs.
  25. Maybe for PLDs, but it looks like DRK and WAR will have damage attached to theirs.
