Warrior of Light, Hydaelyn's Chosen, and Bringer of Light
Melkire replied to Melkire's topic in RP Discussion
Sheer luck and force of numbers. They get into some detail with it in the MSQ lead-up to Titan. The original Company of Heroes was dozens if not hundreds strong, if I recall correctly. Those currently lauded as members are merely the scant few survivors who weren't Drowned or [i forget the term for Titan's Tempering]. -
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part XXIII Q&A Update Thread
Melkire replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I wouldn't consider it out of left field when a question regarding availability of child models for use elicited an aside that specifically addressed current use of a particular race as a substitute for children... but I guess that's up to interpretation of the response. *shrugs* -
First and foremost, please join me in thanking Xenedra for all of her hard work, time and effort both, in helping the community out in myriad ways (too many for me to count) over the years. She's stepping down from moderator, and while we'll miss her on staff here at RPC, we're sure she'll continue to be an example to FFXIV roleplayers everywhere. Thank you, Xen! Secondly, we're bringing on yet another pair of eyes and ears (and hopefully hands, all hands aboard, etc.) to join the moderation staff. Please welcome Nailah and Gegenji to the fold. If you've an issue or concern, or perhaps have seen something on RPC that needs addressing, you may now also contact them through Private Messages or RPC Chat. The rest of the staff will be keeping an eye on them and offering a helping hand until they're ready to go without training wheels, so please give them time to get situated. Welcome, you two! As always, you can find the current list of staff members via the "Forum Team" link near the bottom of the main index page of the forums. *waves hardhat*

Security tokens solve this issue, or so I'm told... but then you have other issues such as "what if I lose my token?" -
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part XXIII Q&A Update Thread
Melkire replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Unless I'm very much mistaken, that is just a normal Miqo'te child. The developer comment re: Lalafells was an aside in reference to how certain people, roleplayers included, choose to play Lalafells as substitutes for character models of children. "Their heads are too big to use them as kids," essentially. I don't see "Lalafell-Miqo'te hybrid" anywhere in that dev comment. -
It's more that we, the players, only witness a handful of primal summonings. This makes it difficult to determine conclusively how frequently the primals are summoned by their relative beast tribes. Clearly, if they were summoned and promptly defeated every few days, the main character's assistance in putting down the Primal thread wouldn't be treated with the impact that NPCs seem to place upon it. Not much meaning to the Scions' assistance if it's a routine task.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part XXIII Q&A Update Thread
Melkire replied to Kage's topic in FFXIV Discussion
There's a reddit thread that specifically addresses how the mechanics behind Living Dead work. ( ) To sum it up, if you die during Living Dead, you get healed to full and you get a debuff, as Gegenji mentioned. What's not specific in the tooltip is that you then need to be healed for an amount equivalent to your maximum HP in order to remove the debuff. Otherwise, if the debuff ticks down to 0, you die anyway. The trouble is that any amount that qualifies as overhealing does not count towards this maximum HP value. Let's refer to some examples. DRK, 15k HP. Example 1: DRK is sitting at 3000/15000 HP and pops Living Dead. A big hit comes through, "killing" the DRK. leaving them at 1/15000 HP. WHM casts Benediction on DRK, bringing the DRK to 15000/15000. This has only healed the DRK for 12000. The DRK needs to take additional damage so that the WHM can heal another 1 HP in order to remove the debuff. Once that happens, debuff drops off. If the DRK received no additional heals after the Benediction, they would have died when the debuff ticked to 0. Example 2: DRK is sitting at 3000/15000 HP and pops Living Dead. A big hit comes through, "killing" the DRK. leaving them at 1/15000 HP. SCH hits Lustrate three times in a panic, for 6000 HP per heal. That brings DRK to 6001/15000, then 12001/15000, then 15000/15000. The debuff does not fade because the total HP healed amounted to 14999 HP, as 3001 HP from the last Lustrate that hit for 6000 HP counted as "overhealing". The DRK will have to take additional damage so that the SCH can heal 1 more HP without overhealing. If DRK and SCH don't meet this requirement, the debuff ticks to 0 and the DRK dies. -
Pet peeves? When someone initiates or prompts the use of /random dice to determine outcomes in roleplay and then doesn't follow basic etiquette if they lose a roll, instead opting to powergame/godmod away your desired action after you yourself have already done THEM the courtesy of graciously accepting lost rolls to your own character's detriment. It reeks of "I'm here to win, I won't give ground for the sake of story." Doesn't have to be conflict RP, either. And whenever this happens, it makes me walk away each and every time.

You paid for Heavensward, which is 3.x content a.k.a. 3.0 and everything that follows. Similar to how folks had to purchase ARR to enjoy 2.x a.k.a. 2.0 and onward. I for one am pretty damned pleased with what we've gotten so far, and am looking forward to future patches. Only complaint here is glamor disparity between DoW and DoM. Healers and casters got screwed for choices again.
-
Took that off my search info after a while. I find that "Walks-ups welcome" is shorthand for "I don't mind spontaneous RP, but I'd at least like to have a hook before I initiate, so I'm not likely to walk up to you myself right out of the blue." Might be that's not been not others' experiences with it, but that's been my impression. It's certainly a major factor in whether I walk up to someone: I'm going to want a reason for my character to suddenly bug a complete stranger, just as I'd like a reason in real life before approaching the same.

Warrior of Light, Hydaelyn's Chosen, and Bringer of Light
Melkire replied to Melkire's topic in RP Discussion
Not so. Dungeons don't have any lore which explicitly or implicitly state that Echo is required. Any trials involving primals would either require Echo, a lore-compliant substitute, or a roleplay-contrived substitute (see: Dogberry and Stormwind's Primal Fight events, where if I'm not mistaken a magitek device devised for the purpose of the RP session as introduced as a means of justifying why folks weren't going to get tempered). -
Warrior of Light, Hydaelyn's Chosen, and Bringer of Light

I'd like folks thoughts on this. This might also be a helpful thread to continue the discussion started here. Here's my understanding of the titles: 1. The adventurers present at Carteneau who were sent forward in time by Louisoux are considered "Warriors of Light," per 2.0 starting MSQ (see: banquet scenes, Cid's special 2.0 dialogue for 1.x players). 2. Those adventurers and other individuals seen in 2.0's introduction to Hydaelyn after the MC acquires his/her first crystal are known and referred to as "Hydaelyn's Chosen" frequently throughout 2.x and 3.0. This seems to correspond so well to those who possess the Echo that the two seem almost interchangeable; if you are one of Hydaelyn's Chosen, you likely possess the Echo. In any case, that there are many of these individuals, and that not all of them are adventurers, is something confirmed both by Minfilia's existence and a 3.0 MSQ lore drop courtesy of Iceheart and others. 3. There is some ambiguity over whether the MC of 2x./3.0 is one of the Warriors of Light from 1.x or not. This is to accommodate the difference between 1.x players and 2.x-only players. In any event, the 2.x/3.0 MC is eventually acknowledged as a Warrior of Light, even if only as a new one. This makes it seem that "Warrior of Light" is more a title than anything. 4. The companions of the 2.x/3.0 WoL MC who aid him or her at various points throughout the MSQ - the assault on Castrum Meridianum and the Praetorium, for example - are acknowledged as highly-skilled fellow adventurers. It is heavily implied that these particular individuals are also Hydaelyn's Chosen. Whether or not they are Warriors of Light is up in the air. They are NOT, however, the Bringer of Light, which we're getting to right... now. 5. The title of "Bringer of Light" is specifically given to the 2.x/3.0 WoL MC, and canonically speaking there is only one such individual. This also aligns well with the 3.0 MSQ spoiler that... EDIT: I've avoided touching the subject of "Hydaelyn's Blessing" because I'm not sure whether it's ever definitively stated exactly WHAT that refers to: whether it's the Echo, or the Bringer of Light's enormous capabilities that Midgardsormr seals away, or just Hydaelyn going "YO, DAWG, YOU'RE MY HOMIE." See Sounsyy's post here for more. EDIT 2: A useful diagram drafted up by an anonymous soul. Blame them for anything wrong with it.

"Nanamo" gets referred to as "Nanamo" a lot, doesn't she? Because the lore quote in question is actually related to Plainsfolk, not Dunesfolk. Nanamo on the other hand is Dunesfolk, and from what we've seen of their naming conventions, family names are the "middle name" so to speak. Nanamo Ul Namo. Etc MY MISTAKE, I ALWAYS GET THE TWO CONFUSED.
-
If I'm not mistaken, tribal Seekers of the Sun are the only case where you can't reasonably substitute the second name as a family name. This is due to the fact that their "families" are their tribes, and their tribes are denoted by the first letter of their given name. U'odh Nunh, for instance, breaks down as "Odh of the U Tribe" with Nunh as their title (which denotes breeding rights, but that's an aside). I do know there's a lore tidbit for loading screens that didn't make it into the game that specifies that Plainsfolk names are typically given together. "Teledji Adeledji," for example. Never "Adeledji" and only rarely "Teledji". Never encountered any issues with other races when addressing other roleplayers' characters by their second name, personally speaking, but I'm not too familiar with how this should be handled in the case of Hellsguard. Up until now, I've treated their names as given name and surname. EDIT: PLAINSFOLK get both names used, not Dunesfolk. Derp derp. Thanks Souns.

[split] Garlemald's Presence in Othard and Relation to the Roman Empire
Melkire replied to Jana's topic in FFXIV Discussion
If I recall, this procedure was specific to the legion of Nael Van Darnus, as opposed to every other legion of the Empire. Was similar to decimation, if I recall correctly. Someone else will have to source that for you. -
FFXI lore actually that was carried over to XIV. That and this description of Brayflox's Longstop: Also original lore on Materia/Mutamix refers to him as a male. So, several examples of gender identification were given in game. Just some mis-placed gender pronouns when 2.0 first came out caused some confusion. But yes, OX = female, IX = male. As per the first link I posted, that gender pronoun was changed back in 2.2. That said, it's good to know that Mutamix also had similar troubles. I distinctly recall the changes for Mutamix and Sweetnix being mentioned in patch notes at one point, but I can't find them now. Also good to know that there's a 1.0 lore source on this.
-
Relevant. Also relevant. I can't seem to find the original reference to -IX and -OX. Was it dev commentary or in-game?
-
Negative, I've noticed a trend where only certain pieces drop from certain chests in the new dungeons. Case in point, the last chest prior to the final boss of Vault always drops a weapon if it drops gear at all.
-
Orthodox fending chest piece from the Aery. last boss drop as far as I can tell. Can confirm, it's the Orthodox Coat of Fending. It also drops from the chest right after the huge Stone Vigil boss dragon-Monster-Hunter-dude, right before you climb up the last fallen column. Precedes the huge fluck of dragons prior to the last boss. So you've got two chances at it dropping in any given Aery run. Syrcus Tower, Amon's fight. I can tell by the fancy balcony seating. This is a nice shot.

If you recall the lore tidbit from The Great Gubal Library that features Garlean Naming Conventions (I assume you haven't reached this far in the MSQ yet, but I'm sure you've likely seen the screencaps), the Garlean Empire isn't older than six decades or so at most. Exactly when they finished conquering Othard, I'm not sure is ever specified (though I recall some mention of it somewhere in the MSQ, again from Alphinaud) but the length of their dominion over Othard is somewhere in that timeframe. *turns up the Sounsyy signal to MAXIMUM BRIGHTNESS*

Posted this on Tumblr, but I'll repost here. The exact quote from Alphie is as follows: Later on in the same video is Alphinaud's meeting with Yugiri and the Domans in the Quicksand, where Yugiri explains that the Domans tried to take advantage of the distraction caused by the Imperial succession war to overthrow their rulers. They failed miserably, and Doma was raised to the ground. Yugiri led the remnants of the nation to a coastal port, they seized a number of vessels (each holds approximately 200 people, iirc) and fled for Eorzea.

Eep. Yeah, would've helped to have the lodestone link. http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/88d2c936ee0dbd3bc2a84c4ec2606cc0fe8a3e7a I'll throw it into the OP for visibility's sake.

Aren't these the gear sets from Tomestones of Esoterics? They look nearly identical but the Alexandar stuff looks more gold in color. Maybe that's the color. I had hoped the gear shown in the preview trailer would be drops from Alexander itself, similar to how Binding Coil had its own Allagan pieces.
