  1. But, but, but... they strike the ground, get the whole party encased in shields of flaming stone, and then those shields ERUPT in great gouts of FIRE. That's metal as HELL.
  2. Job-specific Limit Breaks start at 4:00 ! Mod Note: Editing the title so we can keep this distinct from previous trailers.
  3. [video=youtube] Colorful. Fun. Old school. Arwing Baby Raptor! LANDMASTER FLIGHT MODE.
  4. Dear experienced WHM Healers, I'm currently level 40 and climbing. My question is as follows: If I'm running a four-man dungeon instance and the party is taking a lot of damage for whatever reason, assuming I already have Regen up on those who need it, at what point is it best to transition from individual heals to AoE heals via Medica, if ever? My main concern is keeping folks out of the dreaded "a lucky crit might kill them" zone while minimizing MP usage.
  5. Friendly bump! I'm running a little late (I blame my family's insistence on serving me breakfast and CalTrans being spotty) but I'll be there!
  6. I'd have to agree. Why's he doing squats, though?
  7. I can't even remember, it's been that long since I played PGL, lol. Chances are, greased lightning is both a mechanic and a way of the PGL/MNK getting "warmed up". There's lore. Hamon Holyfist actually refers to it by name in the PGL questline. http://xivdb.com/?quest/66234/Burning-Up-the-Quarter-Malm Then Chuchuto speaks up and interrupts.
  8. That monks, by lore, use aether, even if the gameplay mechanics no longer reflect that? Akin to how conjurers should still be able to manipulate all elements including fire, ice, lightning, etc.
  9. Getting into game mechanics is stepping onto a slippery slope, but for the purposes of this mental exercise, I'll oblige. Casters can run out of mana. It takes time for the reservoir/pool that they can draw on to replenish. This implies a natural regeneration rate, represented in game as MP Regen. That means either you're getting aether back from nothing (impossible, since having no aether basically means you're dead) or the source is distinct from the reservoir. The Force from Star Wars is pretty similar in concept. You've energy, and as a living thing you generate and regenerate energy. But ultimately speaking, that energy is on loan to you for as long as you're among the living. Once you're dead, it all flows back to The Greater Web of Life. That monks don't use MP is Gameplay-Story Segregation. The same probably holds true for warriors and dragoons. You're not using magic to affect the world around you? TP for you.
  10. 1000 hours in MS Paint. I used the words "mana pool" as an abstraction for the personal reservoir of aether that every living being has and can draw on given the right training. Just like how Widargelt tells us that every living being also has chakra. For the purposes of lore discussion, I'm ignoring the game mechanic that is MP. If I hadn't, we'd be getting into really grey areas such as Paladins. Is it conjury, is it Holy Succor a la 1.0...? Does Flash even exist as a spell within XIV lore, or is it pure game mechanic? EDIT for Zelmanov: I also left out WAR, DRG, and NIN because lore is very vague when it comes to how they utilize aether. NIN ninjutsu is probably a similar process to THM and to MNK sans control over chakra. And BRD I'm not familiar at all with.
  11. The quote from FFXIV's Erik, the MNK job questgiver: http://xivdb.com/?quest/66602/Five-Easy-Pieces My personal interpretation... I drew a diagram! =D Everything in red is INTERNAL. Everything else is EXTERNAL. Most Eorzeans have no direct access to or control over the chakras. They draw from an interior reservoir of aether, instead (denoted in the diagram as "the mana pool"). Everything in red, that constitutes an individual's aether, that's borrowed from Hydaelyn/the land/the world/the lifestream. When an individual dies, everything in red returns to the land. This is why Black Magic is treated as vile: you're damaging the land, as the aether that's used up never returns again to Hydaelyn. Similar in concept to...
  12. Widargelt's knowledge, from what I understand of the MNK job quests, seem to imply that the only time a monk taps into latent surrounding aetheric energies is when they are communing with/attuning to/meditating on/tapping into a "land," otherwise known as a particular locale. A prerequisite for said lands is that they have to have been sites of former battles or some such; I think the implication there is that there needs to have been some amount of death to result in a surplus of aether for that area. This is "the spirit of the fight lingers"; it's aether left behind from people dying and/or expending aether. A monk, in communing with the land, takes hold of that aether the way Louisoux took hold of the aether around him at Carteneau. The difference is in how it is used: a monk allows that energy to flow into him or her, and that excess effectively aids in opening the floodgates/locks that restrict a normal person from accessing chakra. It's implied that, at all other times, a monk's expression of power is internalized use of internal energy. Again, I cite: http://xivdb.com/?quest/66597/Brother-from-Another-Mother
  13. Pffft. Just do a little digging. Crossposting: http://xivdb.com/?quest/66599/A-Slave-to-the-Aether
  14. Quick lore dump on monks and chakra so we can get back to talking about arcanima per the OP.
  15. Going to merge in another thread in a moment, but I wanted to respond first by saying that I think stickied megathreads are a good idea. I'll put that down for the team to discuss and perhaps implement moving forward. EDIT: Right, they merge by timestamp. Awkward.
  16. [Admin Hardhat] To react to sightings in-character, I'd guess. Moving this to Events, I think, since it's more of a notice given the lack of out-of-character commentary. If the original poster wants his/her thread moved to Making Connections or into the Lantern (IC board), send me a Personal Message and let me know! [/Admin Hardhat]
  17. [Admin Hardhat] Yeah, no. We're not doing this. Thread closed. Anyone who has an issue, or a question, or a concern can come to me in private through PMs, emails, or /tells. [/Admin Hardhat]
  18. I... a chat service?? Somehow I missed that option -- I will look for that option if this new ticket doesn't pan out. I'm not sure if it was an option. If I recall correctly, I filled out the forms on the support site, was emailed by the support agent, and at some point during the email chain they offered me a link that took me to a support chat window. I would try asking for that if you can get hold of another agent. Good luck!
  19. Boooooo. So much for badass dismounts from the air.
  20. They get back to you, but I've never had it actually solve any of my issues. Whoever you speak to on the other end isn't always an English-as-a-first-language person, and a lot of the time they're just like, "Here's this number to call us, spend 4 hours on the phone trying to get help." Depends on the severity of the issue, I think, as well as which avenue you use to contact support. I had to retrieve an account of mine once due to shenanigans that had resulted in my forgetting the password while my account was associated with a long-since-discarded email address. I managed to get a hold of a Square-Enix support agent via live chat and they fixed the issue for me once I proved my identity.
  21. I'm actually reminded of the longboat from Treasure Planet. Seen in the video below starting at approximately 2:43. [video=youtube]
  22. [Admin Hardhat] Going to move this to the Making Connections board for improved visibility. Hopefully that'll get you a few more bites, since that's where folks usually look for this sort of thing. [/Admin Hardhat]
  23. [Admin Hardhat] Moving this to the Making Connections board, as you might get more attention and traction over there. More suited to the topic, too. ^^ [/Admin Hardhat]
