  1. While admittedly not as blatantly alive and flourishing as the RP scene in Ul'dah, it is certainly alive and existent. There are any number of reasons why it's not as obvious or out in the open as other cities (no, I'm not trying to make this a city vs. city thread again), many of which were discussed in several other threads on this forum. However, as has been stated numerous times in this thread alone, there are several linkshells and FCs devoted to and working within Limsa Lominsa. Beyond that, there are several "non-affiliated" (those not in a linkshell or FC pertaining to Limsa RP, specifically or not) characters looming about as well. If you're looking for an RP scene where people are elbow to elbow as they stand around a railing much like in the Quicksand, you'll not find it in Limsa... at least not at this point in time. However, if you're not finding the RP that does exist in Limsa, I might suggest joining the linkshell that many of the posters in this thread are a part of... or even PM'ing them and getting involved with the myriad of stories and plot lines taking place within and around Limsa. It's not a matter of "knowing where to look" so much as "looking in more than just the Wench". ((Sorry about any formatting issues... my iPad hates this site for some reason.))
  2. I am by no means the master of lore, either, but to fill in a bit of the lancer bit for you... Ala Mhigo had a very strong lancer core. As such, you can make a Highlander/Midlander from there that is a refugee from the war with the Empire that knows a thing or two about poking things with spears. Otherwise, you're looking at Gridania/Ishgard for the more "well known" skilled lancers. The guild itself is in Gridania (hence the in game reason you're stuck with starting there) and of course Ishgard has dragoons. So that opens up miqo'te and elezen for you. Now, all of that being said, you're more than welcome to go lala or roe if you prefer... or to even say your character is from Limsa. I was just stating that in those areas mentioned above, the races I mentioned have a particularly "strong" presence. As such, it'll be a bit easier for you to explain ICly. Also, I'd suggest sticking to the naming conventions like Sastra posted to make things a little easier as well. Now, if you plan to take it a step further and call yourself a dragoon... make sure you don't call yourself the azure dragoon. Although there's speculation that there's more than one azure dragoon now, it's generally frowned upon in RP when a person labels them self as such. So, stick to simply being a dragoon. This still leaves you with the ability to do the jumps and such. As far as Gilgamesh vs. Balmung... What I've read in the past is that Gilgamesh RP is more FC-focused and around the housing districts, while Balmung is more open RP focused. That's not to say you won't find open RP on Gilgamesh or FC-RP on Balmung... just that the seem to exist in higher quantities in the ways mentioned above. Hopefully that all made sense and helped clear up a little bit for you. Sorry if it's all a muddled mess, I quite literally just got out of bed.... :sleepy:
  3. After a bit of a hiatus and a reforming of our central theme, we are back in action and our doors are open for recruitment. Come join us in the madness that is 2.4 and all of the RP fun that is to be had on the Balmung server!
  4. Well, turn it into a finger-wagging "You and I got business to tend to..." approach. "Yo, Grace! I got some pickin' to do with you!" "You look like you need to get laid, Jacket! What's your sign?"
  5. Why can't she use this? It's illegal to pay a person to help you find a date/love? This particular side of Grace's operation is no different than eharmony, match.com and whatever else is out there. She tries to find compatible people to hook up and go on dates... And maybe live a happy life together should it all work out. Short of any personal opinions about people dating or getting help with dating, I don't see why Melodia couldn't use this service. Now, the whore ring is an understandable difference... Even though the backstory proves that to be legal as well.... TL;dr: stop making excuses and get on and RP with us!
  6. This is the thread I was referring to... http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=8388
  7. Was trying to find the thread again, but this iPad isn't cooperating. There's a thread floating around on these forums where people discussed this in length. However, to simplify in bulleted lists of "lore friendly" to play as (as far as I recall, anyway)....: Yes: Paladin Scholar Bard (though limited iirc) Dragoon (given the right conditions... namely Ishgardian) No: White mage Black mage Eh.... possible but somewhat iffy...: Summoner Monk Warrior I believe the above is the general consensus. There are always outliers, and of course the "play whatever the hell you want" rule... but in general this is what people accept as I recall. Someone do correct me if I'm wrong.
  8. Thank you for your facetious comment but I'll respond in kind. Is your Galka an extremely powerful mage? Is everyone going to react unkindly to the Galka trapezing through the world? Is your "main" a warrior of light that is the special chosen one? I admit to that post being in bad taste, but I will continue along with that line of reasoning for the grins and giggles of it. My galka was actually well geared and leveled as a blm and smn prior to my quitting FFXI, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. Perhaps he just followed Shantoto through her portal(s). As to my main, he is represented in game through all of the quests I've taken him through to be as such, so yes, I suppose he is. Bad taste aside, the idea still stands. As roleplayers we need to take some things in game (Hildebrand et. al.) with a grain of salt to be able to have a solid base to stand on for our roleplay. As was mentioned before, this game does indeed have influences from anime/comical sources... and it's up to us to realize that those are indeed comical sources, and not canonical lore.
  9. Since shantoto came to Eorzea as represented in game, I'm going to go ahead and bring my Galka over as well. Since my "main" has gotten to lvl50 on every fighting class in game and is binding coil ready on each, as represented in game, I'm going to go ahead and roleplay him as being a near master of each of those arts.
  10. Example 1: 2 or 4 -New- Example 2: 3 or 4 To address the Brass Blade (and other) examples where lalas are sitting/standing right next to other races, wearing the same uniform and gear... I think that falls under their being nimble. Unless I've misread somewhere, this topic isn't about their fighting prowess (with or without weapons), but rather their sheer, physical strength. Lalafell could easily gain rank and stand among the other races in the Brass Blades through physical means by doing what they do best: being short and quick. The other races would play to their strengths as well, miqo'te being stronger than lala and fairly quick as well, midlander being likely fairly well rounded, highlander/roe being the stone walls. It's not a matter of "lala's can't fight," but rather they can't hit -as hard- as the bigger races. They earned their ranks, no doubt, but only because they adapted to being physically weaker and considerably quicker (and apparently with more endurance as well).
  11. I have to say I agree with you entirely here. I can only suspend my belief so far when it comes to imagining lalafell doing feats of strength. As odd as it may sound, I need a healthy dose of "realism" in my RP to find it enjoyable. Were I to see, in real life, someone the size of a lalafell competing in some Highland games and doing just as well as the other burly men (and women) that are more than double their size... I'd question if something was slipped into my breakfast, if I was dreaming, or if there were some divine intervention going on. The same holds true for in the game. I just cannot bring myself to believe and accept that a lalafell would be able to do the same physical feats that require brute strength as nearly any of the other (playable) races within the game. Maybe come close to miqo'te, but still no. To bump it up a scale, I would have a hard time accepting that a roe could lift the same amount of mass as Titan (going by sheer size, not primal/aetheric/magical energies). As much as people may dislike it, I feel there is a need to apply real world physics to this game just for the sake of a sense of scale and realism. Lalafell dashing about like little flashes and hitting blindspots? Sure! Lalafell possessing the same amount of brute, physical strength as the other playable races? No.
  12. There is the "example" if you can call it that of the two sparring in the pugilist's guild. A lalafell vs. a midlander iirc (at work atm so not sure off top of my head what it is). Of course, something along the lines of "How is this even fair?" Is mentioned by one of the NPCs present. That and the lala that follows you around in the pugilists quests (name escapes me atm). Beyond that, I can't think of too many examples myself.
  13. This, unfortunately, is not a new issue. It's been around since the days of MUDs and even before... going into tabletops. It's, also unfortunately, the nature of the beast. People, whether they be "new" or "veteran", invest a lot of thought and emotion into their characters. Through immersion, or other means, one can easily get lost in their character... and while in this mindset, become offended OOCly from IC actions. Many guilds/companies have policies reflecting that which you've asked, "IC does not equal OOC" or some variant. Most guilds/companies that I'm aware do put a hard boot to this type of behavior as well, my own included. That being said, there isn't really too much we can do, unless you want us to take actions that are just shy of profiling.. "Are you new to roleplaying? Yes? Well... here are all the rules:...." I doubt that would help the roleplaying community and would instead have the opposite of the desired effect. It may make roleplayers see roleplaying as a job, more than a fun hobby. Short of having a "NEW ROLEPLAYERS COME TO THIS" event where you teach them the rules in mass, I'm not sure exactly what you'd like us to do. And, again, such an event would likely scare more of them off than actually invite them in. The only thing we can do, that I can think of anyway, is while roleplaying with said offenders... bring it up in whispers, party, etc. that what they did is a bad move. Then, of course, offer advice to rectify the situation. If they're the type that want to plug their ears and shout "alalalalala" while you talk to them in this manner... stop the RP and move on. Hope that one day they'll learn and become a more desirable member of the RP community. You can't force someone to learn...
  14. Maaaaaaaybe. Once you flesh it out a bit more I might be able to think of a way to get involved. This may be a good way for me to reimagine Bloody Bennett... Heh heh...
  15. -snip- Honest that's the beauty of interpretation : D While thinking on it further I came to the same conclusion, and while the event would be intended for good, it doesn't mean that things won't go as planned. While some would see beauty in the appearance of an eclipse, others might be offended or angered by it, it's how it goes in any situations since there are so many different ways to take it. Just because trying to bring people together for an event in good intentions doesn't mean that someone won't start something, or even a whole group! I think that any way that it went, it would all make great RP and create both friendships and conflict which all help in character development Thanks for replying! I really appreciate you bringing that up This was my thought as well. That no matter the dynamic that shows up, it'll still likely be interesting RP that could very well allow for character development. I'll state it again, I am 100% behind this event happening. I only wanted to make those involved aware of the other side of the coin, so to speak. To be prepared for and/or allow those RP'ers out there that would roleplay a miqo'te that is agitated by this celestial event to also attend your RP event. Again, please do go ahead with this event. Should my schedule be otherwise clear when this is going on, I may very well attend as one of said miqo'te, in a totally non-crashing manner, of course.
  16. Before reading any further, please keep in mind that I am 100% behind you creating an event to gather RP'ers together to have fun. As such, do please go ahead with this idea and event! However, I encourage you to consider the flip side to your above comment that I quoted. Either race of the miqo'te hold their respective celestial body in high regard. Imagine, then, if one of said celestial bodies were to move in front of and block the majority of the view of the other celestial body. To me, this would anger the race whose celestial body is being blocked. In this case, with a solar eclipse, it would seem to me that the Seekers would be quite angered, while the Keepers would have fuel to rub in the face of the Seekers. As a roleplayer of both races(Seeker and Keeper), both of my characters believe that the sun and moon have their own times to grace the skies with their presence. Were one to encroach on the other's time, they would become severely moody... to say the least. Again, just food for thought. I by no means am trying to say "Don't do this event!" Just another perspective to keep in mind, is all.
  17. John watched the item as it neared, a small groan escaping him as it stopped. "How wonderful..." The last time he indulged in such a gift, he had a hard time cutting himself off. Granted, he wasn't pass out drunk... but his abilities and balance were definitely questionable... as were his motives. His hand reached out to twist the bottle around a bit, inspecting the label and the color of the liquid within. He offered a nod as an approval, then carefully shoved it back toward her. "I'm sure you'll enjoy it, Grace." He smirked then moved his gaze back to his job, surveying the surroundings and making note of the comings and goings in the Wench.
  18. As several have said before me... if it's just internet and MMOs, I'd likely go back to consoles. However, to say there wasn't any internet would mean I never would have met my wife (or, at least I likely wouldn't have... discussion of fate saved for another day perhaps) and I'd likely still be living in Florida instead of Oklahoma. I would likely be a local law enforcement officer there in FL, instead of a teacher here in OK. In my free time, I'd likely stick to console and single player PC games. Take those away and I'd likely watch TV in their stead. Take that away as well...? Maybe find a cure for cancer out of sheer boredom? I honestly don't know if you were to take my entertainment technology from me. TL;DR: Internet + MMOs quite literally got me where I am today in life. If those weren't around, I'd likely be half the country (USA) away back on the east coast doing a very different job than I currently do.
  19. So... I got a bit bored (and lonely  )... plus I was tired of walking through the forest on the island, so I made a path... and a tunnel... and this...
  20. It's still an MMO. Sorry to inform you, but just about anything they add to the game is going to be just this. It's how every MMO in existence operates. You spend money, they give you a meaningless repetitive task to do that takes twice the amount of time required for the money you spent. Then you spend more money to finish it because you're OCD. Disclaimer: The terms "you" and "you're" in the above comment are indicative of all of us, not one single person. The author is just as guilty of this same process. No, no. I know and understand. But, you can't blame me for wishful/hopeful thinking can you? I'd honestly rather have a Chimera/Hydra EX at the end of the chains rather than staring at my map for little blue circles to pop up. A hard boss fight... or the fights like in FFXI you had to endure to be able to break the level caps. That sort of thing... C'est la vie. I'll eventually buck up and deal with the tedium... but for now I'll stick to my wishful thinking and passive complaining.
  21. The problem for me is not so much the cost of the upgrading, but rather the tediousness of it all. I'm honestly surprised I lasted through the Atma and Animus stages with just how awfully boring they were. Grinding out the Alexandrite for Novus is certainly more fun by comparison, but still very much a chore to me. I really wish that upgrading our weapons to the next tier was more of a challenge, rather than a time sink. Sitting in a zone running from fate to fate isn't a challenge... killing ten mobs, doing some leves, and running "stay out of the red stuff" dungeons isn't a challenge... doing a daily quest every day for 75 days (maximum if you don't go about grinding tomes/fates AGAIN for drops) isn't a challenge. They're all just snore fest time sinks. The only challenges I've faced through the relic chain(s) thus far are people's lack of red=bad on Titan HM... and staying awake through mindnumbingly boring fate grinds... More on topic: Thank you for this link and insight. It certainly is nice to know that some people may be able to save a bit of their gil.
  22. He watched the couple as they left, a small smirk toying at the corners of his lips. He shook his head and raised a hand to his ear, murmuring into the pearl that was there. He began to approach the table and take his seat once more, now that the couple had left, but paused as Liam approached. He let out a small sigh, watching the young man and knowing full well what was in store for him. He didn't like the idea, but he didn't let his face mirror the man's as he closed the distance. The pairing seemed more out of spite than it was for bettering the business. Liam was loyal, and all around good at his job. He had a good head on his shoulders and rarely ever questioned his orders. Locket was... well... she was good at what she did... but... He took his seat once more and smiled at Liam, "You've got it handled I'm sure, Dresdan. If you need any tips or anything..." he moved a hand and tapped the pearl in his ear. "... I'm only a few ticks away, yeah?" He gave Andralyn a sidelong glance before looking fully at Liam, "Besides, if anyone of our crew has a level enough head to tame that woman, it's you. Gods know I've tried!" He pat the man's arm firmly then sat back and returned his gaze to the other patrons of the Wench.
  23. White horse and melons achieved. Not much left to do other than find a damned jungle biome! Well, that and beat the bosses, but meh.
