1) When there are 6+ people RPing in one place, sometimes you're not being ignored on purpose. I'm sure there are some massive douchenozzle RPers out there who will be jerks and ignore you on purpose. However, if there are more then 6+ people all chatting at once in one location - there's a really, really good chance people are going to miss what you have to say if you're a stranger trying to break into the conversation. It's very, very hard to track what everyone's saying at once, and once the number of people talking at the same time reaches a high enough number, myself and a lot of people I know will just start scanning the chat for names we know are talking to us so we don't miss what's being said. This is why I both love and hate RP events where there are a giant mess of people all attempting to socialise at the same time because it can just get really, really impossible to RP sometimes when everyone's chattering at once. 2) If you're not sure whether you're being ignored or not - just ask OOC via tells if you can join in the RP. If you're trying to break in a conversation, and no one's responding - just poke someone (who is very obviously chatting and definitely at their computer) and ask OOC if it's alright for your character to break into the convo for random RP. The game literally makes a noise and colors the text differently for easy reading - so if that person just keeps on RPing right after you sent the tell and totally ignores you, then you know for certain they're a jerk and you don't have to bother. Otherwise, they'll either tell you "Sure, join us!" and you can point out that your character said a few things that likely got missed in the slog of chat - or they'll tell you "Sorry, we're just RPing with each other right now" And at least at that point you know not to waste your time. 3) OOC communication in general is key and can solve a lot of problems. Not sure what's going on in RP? Ask OOC. Not sure if someone would enjoy the type of RP you're about to launch their way? Ask OOC. Not sure how to join in an RP event/story arc/random RP that's already running? Ask OOC. The biggest problem I see pop-up again and again in almost every RP community I join is that people don't think to go the simple route of OOC Communication to work out potential problems before they get big. Almost every situation can get resolved just by very politely chatting things over OOC before resuming. 4) If you're trying to get random RP, make it super easy to drag your character into things. Just like your character probably wouldn't hail down some strangers out of the blue without good reason because it's not realistic. Other people's characters won't just hail down yours out of the blue without good reason either. Make it easy for them. Sit closer to the group. Stand somewhat nearby. If your character is the type to just run up to people and say hi - awesome! If not, try to provide some easy 'hook' for people to jump on so they can drag you into the RP in a way that feels natural for both their character and yours. If you sit on the other side of the room or just walk right past without emoting or saying anything - that doesn't really make it easy for anyone to make with the mutually beneficial RP awesomeness. This is ESPECIALLY true if another person is providing a 'hook' for RP as well! You're just making it easier for each other! 5) if someone provides you a hook, for the love of god meet them halfway. Or just acknowledge that maybe that bit of random RP isn't going to work out for you. If someone gives you a hook that might not be the greatest most appropriate one for your character, it's not their responsibility or obligation to keep trying to provide you with more hooks until they hit one that fits exactly with your character's interests. Someone's taking the time to try and include you, at least work with them or provide a hook of your own to make it easier on them. Meet them halfway. 6) When there's a deeper, more serious conversation going on - sometimes it's just really, really hard to include total strangers unless you give them a solid hook. While at first my RP at the Quicksand started off with Tiergan being hammered - there were two instances were another RPer showed up that wanted to talk Serious Business™. In one case, it was a woman who came to tell the assembled group that a mutual friend was very hurt, possibly in trouble, and why. In this scenario - my character would be EXTREMELY focused on finding out more about his hurt friend, then he would striking up light conversation with a total stranger. It would be much easier if the stranger offered to help with the hurt friend, or went with the flow of the conversation in that manner - otherwise, it's just very tough. Think about it: If in real life, someone you knew came to you to speak with you about how a friend you know is in the hospital - would you realistically be thinking about how to chat with a complete stranger you have no bonds with standing nearby? Later, another RPer appeared and pointedly mentioned he wanted to speak privately with four people in the assembled group about a serious matter. We all got up and started leaving - at this point, there was just no way to include a stranger. My character was being led off to go have serious-business talk in private. The RP was transitioning from being open to more closed. That's all I got - feel free to agree or disagree. If you disagree, I'd definitely love to read why, because I'm sure I have the wrong idea somewhere and could use some enlightening to make this whole process less of a pain in the butt for both myself and others in the future. /salute

I completely forgot about this due to work. I'm bummed now. Hopefully there will be another one in the future. I hope the turn out was excellent.

Palaldin just can't find the right type of RP FC!
Tiergan replied to Ailles's topic in RP Discussion
There are a loooot of 'good'-aligned groups in the linkshell section of this website. Kimset just posted a few. Unless you're looking for more of a 'Knights' theme - then that's a tiny bit harder to find. -
I rolled miqo'te for two reasons that relate to FFXI. 1) My main in FFXI was a mithra named Lurial and I have a lot of fond memories of my time in that game. So for old time's sake, when FFXIV 1.0 came out, I made a miqo'te named Lurial that looked similar. (Though with a completely different backstory and personality to suit the new game.) 2) Male mithra and famale galka were not playable in FFXI even though players really, really wanted them. (Well, maybe not the female galka since they didn't even exist according to lore.) So when 2.0 came out and male miqo'te and female roegadyn were playable, some part of my mind went "AT LAST, AFTER 10 LONG YEARS. I CAN FINALLY ROLL A MANTHRA AND A LADY-GALKA." What didn't help matters was that Tiergan was originally an elezen back in 1.0, but when 2.0 came out, they updated the graphics. The updated graphics are AMAZING, but unfortunately, Elezen-Tiergan went from looking really angry and awesome all the time to really... bloody bored. In every cutscene he appeared in, he just looked as though he could not summon up an ounce of emotion other then boredom - Ascians and beastmen be damned. So Tiergan became Lurial's twin brother at that point. To be perfectly honest though - I often regret that Lurial and Tiergan are miqo'te and not highlanders. I ended up not liking the miqo'te naming conventions and the lore behind the miqo'te tribes (no offense to anyone that does! Different strokes for different folks and all). Their backgrounds really suit highlander characters infinitely more then cats. The only reason why I haven't altered them is that I've already done too much RP with both of them at this point for them to suddenly race-swap and Lurial doesn't have any fantasia potions on her anymore.

... Oh man. I totally missed the part where she was 5. Hell - let her RP whatever she wants.

I really like this idea. If you're married to the concept of Time Travel, this is a very elegant way of going about it. Plus, then you don't have to worry about keeping an eye on the fuzzy memory shtick. If she's from an alternate universe/timeline, then anything could have happened in her past. Eorzea could have been invaded by a dimension-hopping squad of SHINRA Soldiers or whatever. At that point, the daughter character's history would only have to follow the vaguest sense of logic and, if whatever she says comes out as too weird or crazy it can easily be brushed off as embellishing her own background to impress others. Depending on how much his daughter wants to RP with the rest of the community and not just her parents - this sort of thing would launch her straight into 'special snowflake' territory and she'd probably get avoided by a lot of folks. Personally, if you go with time-travel and not adoption, you should keep all the outlandish elements of it as low-key and subtle as possible. Someone mentioned her hiding it and acting as though she were adopted - that's a really neat idea. It means anyone who would potentially not be okay with time-travel in RP can just see her as an adopted daughter - and when Erik, his wife, and his daughter come across players that are OK with the whole timey-wimey thing, they can reveal the secret to them. Plus, RPing having a secret is sort of fun and adds another dimension to the RP.
-
I second adoption - it'd be an easy way for your characters to have a daughter without retconning or the issues that come with time-travel characters.

After speaking with a few people, we've tweaked the 'Theme' and the main information regarding the Linkshell to be clearer and cause less confusion!

Louisoix's spell that sent the Warriors of Light 5 years into the future presumably invoked Althyk the Keeper, God of Time. Your daughter's character could presumably been sent backwards in time with a similar spell. However, if I were her, I'd make it so her character has partial memory loss. That way her character knows who she is, who her parents are, that she loved them, and memories of her childhood - but nothing really specific about the future since anything she RPs about what the future would be like has a strong potential to go wonky. Maybe she was sent to the past for some important purpose - but the strain of traveling back that many years into the past robbed her of everything but the most important parts of her memories: her family.

RPing with the Anti-Social! ~A Humble Guide
Tiergan replied to Vysce the Lad's topic in RP Discussion
I think this is really important for both less-then-sociable characters and villains. As much as people try not to mix IC/OOC - a lot of people unconsciously do so if all they see of you is your anti-social brooder or your conniving villain. Because of that, it is so, sooo unfathomably important to show that you're a nice normal human being OOC that is aware that your character is a grump/jerk. Tiergan is the resident grump amongst my characters and after RPing with a group long enough, I wound up with my avatar. <___<; -
RPing with the Anti-Social! ~A Humble Guide
Tiergan replied to Vysce the Lad's topic in RP Discussion
I think it depends on the degree of broodiness, how bad [insert traumatic experience here] was, and how well the player pulls it off. Fantasy worlds can set up some pretty devastating scenarios that we can't really relate to in real life, and it hits a point where it actually comes off a little weird if your character is super well adjusted and happy afterwards. Hell, there are a lot of real life scenarios where it's a little weird if that person is super well adjusted and happy afterwards. That said, I think there is something to be said about being *too* anti-social like Magellan mentioned. Far be it for me to say someone's RPing wrong, but if trying to RP with a broodtastic character is like pulling teeth to get decent responses, they're just screwing themselves over. It just becomes annoying trying to RP with them and that's not too fun for anybody. -
What is your FC?

A lot of groups I've joined have had a strong focus on social-RP, which is great, except that it's all I can ever seem to find. I'm really hungering for some diversity and it's why I made another thread searching for people who were interested in brainstorming plots to try and foster some for myself. That said - I'm curious to see if there are any strongly plot-driven RP LS/FCs out there. I've looked through the linkshell descriptions on this website, but it's hard to tell whether a group is plot-driven or social RP-driven based upon brief descriptions. Any of them out there?

RPing with the Anti-Social! ~A Humble Guide
Tiergan replied to Vysce the Lad's topic in RP Discussion
This is kind of an important thing to touch upon. Just like real life anti-social folks kind of cut themselves out of a lot of really great experiences with other people by avoiding others - anti-social characters can cut you out of RP if you're not careful. Sometimes its just a matter of knowing the kind of RP you enjoy and don't enjoy, and making sure that your character's anti-social-ness limits only the sort of RP you wouldn't really be into in the first place. For example, tavern RP generally isn't my thing. I know it's a lot of fun for others, and I don't hold it against others if they do enjoy tavern RP, but on a personal level, I just don't find it interesting to sit at a bar, drinking, and talking about my day. Because of this, I'm okay with both of my characters just not having the personality for bar-hopping. Other times, it's about finding creative ways to do that 'reverse-hook' that everyone's been talking about and RP around your character's limits. So if I randomly felt the itch to tavern it up? Or there was an RP event that was tavern-related that fits my schedule and I wanted to show support for the community by going anyway? I could send my character in with a cluster of friends and have him get hilariously tanked. Maybe he's even a lightweight and it doesn't really take him all that long to get drunk and lose his "amg, i hates poeple, getawayfromme" exterior. Or maybe something great happened and he's feeling oddly celebratory. Or maybe the opposite happened and he wants to dunk his head in a vat of booze and forget. There's lots of methods I could cook up to get my character in the action. Just like with a lot of things in RP - it takes you actually thinking stuff up and going with it instead of just parking your character somewhere and wondering why no one wants to talk with the socially-cripple, anti-social, dark broody loner-person sitting quietly in a corner in a tavern full of happy drunk people. -
Role-playing alongside the storyline: YOU did WHAT?!
Tiergan replied to Zac Evans's topic in RP Discussion
I'm just going to agree with what everyone else essentially said: 1) It's 'okay' to RP aspects of the main story that can or would definitely require a large (and by large, I mean hundreds) number of people. (Having Echo, Being a Scion, Being a Warrior of Light, fighting Primals, participating in one of the many different groups involved in Operation Archon) 2) It's 'not okay' to RP aspects of the main story that could have only really been done by one 'Hero'. (Finding Cid, Being part of the one and only group that personally defeated Gaius, being the one who found and rescued Thancred from the Ascians, etc) I mean, at the end of the day - you can RP whatever you want. But sticking to the above just makes you a more considerate RPer to the rest of the community. -
RPing with the Anti-Social! ~A Humble Guide
Tiergan replied to Vysce the Lad's topic in RP Discussion
Basically here to second/third what others have said. If you're going to roleplay a dark, brooding, mysterious, anti-social loner-type guy/gal, then you have to have a plan to get some interaction going. Otherwise you're just cutting yourself off from a ton of RP. -
I'm glad you feel that way! The recruitment application can be found right here: http://rune.enjin.com/recruitment It's long as heck, but it's mostly so that we can make sure everyone would get along and is on the same page in regards to RP.

WELP. So much for housing. I really hope player homes aren't that expensive, or I'll be one unhappy camper.

Looking for People to Brainstorm/RP Large In-Depth Plots with

I compleeeeeeeetely forgot about skype. If you all have it, then that's definitely a much better way for all of us to communicate as opposed to scrambling to collect everyone in an LS that will get deleted after anyway. If you're interested, please PM me your skype information! -

Yeah - I feel your pain. My kneejerk urge is usually 'COLLECT ALL THE RP LS!" And then when I need space I scramble to figure out which one is inactive and isn't actually necessary. -

Tiergan replied to Tiergan's topic in RP Discussion
H'okay - I think I might make a temporary "Brainstorm Times" LS just to make it easier to gather people up and eventually chat. This LS will probably be deleted after once we all figure out stuff. Does this sound like a good idea? Do you guys even have space for another LS? I know I'm nearly hitting my max cap, so I'd understand if folks don't exactly take a shine to this. -

It also gets terribly along with my forum title =| Grumpy Cat begrudgingly approves of other cats who are also Grumpy. Also, I am a huge derp and should clarify that I made a linkshell, but then later decided "Making a linkshell with a pre-set story made by me might not be working out. I should just gather up people and brainstorm with them from the start." So there is no actual idea or linkshell for people to join (well, unless you have space for an extra LS and like the sound of Runebound /coughcoughshamelessplug). The plan was to round up a bunch of interested parties, see if we all like the same kind of epic plots, and then brainstorm some crazy awesomeness together from scratch. Europeans! Fear not - depending on what time you play, we might be able to have awesome times together. Or we could just collect all the Europeans who are interested in epic plots and help get you all together making RP magic. I'm glad for all the interest so far. I'll let the thread hang around for a few days longer to see if anyone else wants to join in and then I'll either hunt you all down in game or just send out a bunch of PMs through this website.
