  1. Oh fuck Threads over boys. (Tell me more of your logic Lilia)
  2. So, I've sort of tossed the idea around of changing Otto's last name to Nunh. Question is, how do we as player characters go about that from a writing perspective / IC perspective? Do we go to the Hall of Flames and bring a fat sack of gil and say "One namechange please?" Not really sure how I would ever entertain the idea to be RP-friendly.
  3. Legend says it doesn't matter as long as the dice are on your side.
  4. Modern .50 calibers are lethal as fuck depending on the cartridge. Yeah .50 BMG fucks up modern lite-armor vehicles, or blows through concrete buildings - but the cartridge is fucking HUGE. It's also shooting a (usually) milled steel round, amongst other flavors .50 bmg comes in. Its got a massive amount of powder pushing that bullet to unreal amounts of force. However even .50AE will obliterate shit coming out of a pistol, or that .50 smith and wesson has for their super revolvers - but .50 isnt just lethal because its .50. The cartridge behind and caliber is what makes it lethal.
  5. This was my assumption about machinist guns. That they are cartridge based firearms. Not blackpower musketball firing things. They look like them too, to be honest. and it would only make sense due to their ability to fire more than once in a while. If the firearms are cartridge based, you could...sort of reasonably assume they would have rifled barrels. Maybe its a given, hard to say. If thats the case, cartridges + rifling, you are looking at pretty pointed and lethal ammunition that is very accurate. Thats mostly where my dilemma stems from of looking at armor and being like...mmmm don't think it'll hold. Anything shaped like a modern rifle round, even a wadcutter, with good lead or steel cored is going to be drilling holes in a lot of stuff. I also acknowledge that rounded breastplates that are "heavy" in their armor nature should absorb a few shots - but that armor would be "heavy" in nature and nowhere near light to be sure. If it were just steel. Maybe we will find wonder-alloys (very possible if not already doable now if your character is a skilled material specialist with metals and alloys) that will be light enough to alloy some serious mobility while fighting armored. Armor strong enough to get shot and not just be useless. A few other things to consider, the RP gets more interesting if people ever look into armor-piercing styles ala steel bullets or tungsten/wolfram. With all that said if every gun is just shooting balls, then most armor should take most hits from most firearms.
  6. Consider that Gaius' wrist-mounted firearm seemed to fire an energy projectile, which, as Star Wars and Fallout have shown us, are typically slowed down way below the velocity they should be at for the benefit of the audience. His gunblade fired proper steel projectiles, which weren't visible except as tracers until they were explicitly shown to us in bullet time. The Admiral's guns also fire real steel. Do we know if their bullets are steel or lead?
  7. Isn't that the point of a gun though? Levels any and all playing fields? Lack of aether would be why you go to them right?
  8. I'm not saying cobalt will win out. I am merely stating that there are materials already existent that could be, as has been alluded to earlier, a kind of equivalent to Kevlar. Either on its own, or bolstered by the melding of materia to it. And, as such, can serve at least somewhat as a defense against arms fire. But which kind? Do your breastplates stand up as well to Virara slashing at them with knives compared to me slamming on them with a Great Axe? This is my point. Not everyone runs around with flintlock pistols. Some will run around with machinist arms that are a Great Axe equivalent compared to a Flintlock pistols Knife. I dont really know if there is a right or wrong answer to any of this, just speaking aloud from the crafters side of things. And you know, speaking of melding materia or aether-modifying armor, refer to this post I made. I've had Otto on that sort of subject for a while. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=11359&pid=184119#pid184119 It might have answers for crafters to made armor that can stand up to the Great Axe firearms we will be seeing coming.
  9. I don't think comparing flintlock pistols to what machinists will be getting and saying cobalt wins out is a good argument based off of the ARM quest. If a recall it was a chain piece as well. I guess I'm looking at this from a crafters standpoint and not an adventurers standpoint
  10. So, Lilia brings up the arms race to make better gear to sustain a bullet, what about bullet design. We used leadcored ammunition today because it expands and deals good damage to tissue. However, using mild or full steel cored ammunition, or wolfram aka tungsten, is not a modern advent, and that stuff blows through modern steel plates meausured in thicknesses of inches. Larger rifles at least. What will you say to rping against ammunition like that
  11. The admiral was using handguns, which are orders of magnitude weaker than a "long-gun" can and will be. The ARM quest line doesn't add much to me considering she is using a considerably weak firearm that shoots musketballs versus a more modern shaped bullet. Which machinists will be accessing if you give a cursory look at their gear we have seen so far. They will be using guns with modern characteristics, and dramatically more power than what Limsa's leader carries around currently.
  12. I see what you did there. Anyways with regards to your question, I think of it this way... one of the things that exists in the FFXIV world that doesn't exist in real life is all kinds of alloys that are stronger than their conventional counterparts and used in the creation of specialized weapons and armor. Darksteel, wolfram, wootz, Ishgardian steel, and so forth. So while it's tempting to view the armors in the game mindful of historical medieval armors, in the FFXIV universe there are theoretically much stronger metals and alloys that could conceivably withstand gunfire. Sort of the way polymers can in the real world. Just a quick thought off the top of my head here. I agree that it's conceivable that guns will create a lot of unusual RP scenarios for people who RP combat. Im not saying your wrong, but consider this Wolfram = Tungsten. Wootz = steel variant with high carbon Darksteel = see above...most likely. Could be a pure fantasy metal with no real life analogue. Ishgardian steel = steel variant/alloy. Only so much tensile strength can be found in the steel element. Mythril = pure fantasy, who knows how good it is, I've always treated it like aluminum IC. However, with all this said, I completely agree someone like Otto (or other craftsmen such as yourself with metals knowledge) could easily develop alloys that withstand a gunshot, but then how thick would it need to be? Maybe this line of thought is going too far off the rails but armor can only be so heavy before it's unwieldy. Just throwing out thoughts.
  13. Alright so heres the premise of the thread. Lots of people here RP warrior/melee types. Armor that is not light, shield/sword, giant axe, (soon to be giant two-handers), etc. Lots of people here also RP monk/rogue types ala leather armor and fisticuffs/knives but that's not the focus of the thread as much. I don't see anyone in any leather ever surviving a bullet from any caliber gun. So, back to the armor wearers. How do each of you individually look at dealing with firearms? How are you going to interact with them, if at all. I'm going to toss out my quick thoughts on firearms vs plate armor to give an example of what I'm trying to ask. So, for me, any sort of "long-gun" type firearm in this game is going to punch through pretty much any 'normal' heavy armor (breastplate) people are running around with - regardless of what it's made from. With that said, I can see breastplates at least, surviving a hit from a 'handgun' sized firearm - depending on a lot of things - but maybe not. I can also see maybe, RP in the future where armorers look at the firearm dilemma, where "long guns" are blasting through their designs with relative ease and trying reinforcement methods - perhaps changing whole designs to not only shield the body from a sword slash/stab but to resist very sudden and heavy blunt/piercing energy that a bullet would give. Maybe something as simple as riveting on extra strips of metal to the chest, increasing weight, but also giving more material to absorb the bullets energy with. I look to shields and figure, something that looks like the Vintage Kite Shield will stop most anything thats not huge-bore ala .50 or above. Now granted all of what I just said is me applying my knowledge of firearms as reasonably as I can to the understanding of how armor was made in our world that looks like what people in game can wear. I don't say this is the right way, or the best way, or the most anything way - just how I see it, and maybe I'm dead wrong because I don't see me ever roleplaying Otto wearing armor (in the traditional sense) so maybe I am a bit wrong. With all that said, how do people here who run around as a melee type handle guns going forward?
  14. I'm doing my catboys out there the biggest favor I can by becoming a proper Hyur Nunh. Two wives, couple of side-chicks, and counting mates, I got your backs. We going to make these nerds accept poly-life. Also Keeper cats are demonstrably the best. Matrons are love/life . They can't marry you, and since your a Hyur they won't likely be making long term relationshit plans with you so you get to swing by on occasion with little to no strings attached - and who doesn't like a strong independent woman type?
  15. Wait a second, do I need to have all of these shitty MSQs done before I can do Early Access?
  16. Otto adopted Ridley, his orphaned/exiled 18 year old battle-secretary. After she worked for him for a long time they got close in a father/daughter sort of way so he eventually asked her if she would like to be legally adopted and keep her name but become an heiress with all the rights, privileges, and authorities that would be implied from joining a Monetarist's family. She's got a signet ring and can speak in Otto's place should he need it and stuff. Its way different from what everyone else is talking about adoption though because Ridley is now 20, and Otto is only 30. So yeah...definitely unusual but it was and is a good story. She's also a midlander and Otto is highlander, so it's staying within the same 'race'. It was good, close, and endearing RP. Adoption is sweet. I guess I'm biased when I don't see how it's tired. Do a lot of people have adoption backgrounds?
  17. DO NOT get overly concerned about Mary Sue status. I have seen people, myself included, twist themselves into pieces over this. The RPC has a deeply ingrained obsession with no one being too terribly special or interesting - and theres nothing wrong with it - but you can go too far with it as well. Do not forget the RPC is by no means a large, or majority population for Balmung. What is said here can not be assumed to just apply to the server at large, not even close. Don't worry about fitting in here nearly as much as writing up shit you and your rp partners enjoy. Don't be afraid to go off the beaten path, don't be afraid to ignore lore either if it makes for way more interesting RP. This games lore is objectively bad, and sometimes tossing it do to your own thing or do bend something makes things so much more enjoyable. You learn by doing, so go ahead and start rping and make your mistakes. I make mistakes everyday, even an hour ago I did with a writing project I'm working on with Ottos IC wives. Learn by doing.
  18. I caught onto it as well Natalie. People tried to hold me back, step on me, keep me down - now look at me you CHUMPS. *Breaks out eminem song*
  19. Yall get way too hung up in insignificant minutiae of RP. Shit I design fashion for a living and get mistaken for a flaming fashionista often, and still OOC I dont ever put this much thought into anything I wear or anyone else wear. It stifles your rp and makes you beyond boring and bland. Feel free to be upset with me now.
