Alexander, & other general raiding questions!
Yssen replied to Branson Thorne's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Remember that you can do the old Beast Tribe quests (Amal'ja, Kobold, Sylph, and Sahagin) and part of the reward is Tier IV materia. This is especially awesome if you are doing the big long token step for your relic. You will drown in lots of Tier IVs. -
Speed Racer. Campy, over the top, comical in many places, and with many flashy action/driving sequences. People say that it did not do the source material justice, I think they just hadn't watched the source material in a while and viewed it through rose colored glasses. When you compare Speed Racer source with Speed Racer movie it is a great adaptation and near love letter to the original. This does not necessarily make it a good movie, just a good adaptation. Also. Japanese live action Attack on Titan. All Asian cast, despite the fact that this is not the case in the source material. Completely ruins one huge aspect of a main character. Japanese are not with out sin as far as live action adaptations go. That said, unless this movie is set in the American Empire, I see zero narrative reason why The Major would look like ScarJo. Though to be fair, with all the transhuman themes in GiTS in the first place I dunno why she would not just look like whatever. She's been a man, an 8 year old girl, a blonde, and several other things.

Hello and welcome! One of the neat parts of Final Fantasy is that you really do not have to have that much familiarity with the rest of the series to understand and individual setting. The series more transfers over familiar concepts (jobs, enemies, spells and abilities, etc.) and places them in a different setting each game. My biggest suggestion is to devour the lore specific to the character/concept you are thinking of playing rather than all of it at once. There is a LOT of lore out there and it can be daunting (particularly when you get to the stuff that contradicts the other stuff). Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or what not, and make sure to look over some of the threads here on the forum. Soussy and others have done a good job compiling specific pieces of lore together. Look it over and ask questions! Welcome welcomes again, hope to see you in zee game. ^ ^

(Yay for hitting enter to early. Stoopid puter.) Hmmm. I do not think things are quite as simple as they have been put forth. Killing and murder are handled differently depending on what type of story is being told. An action movie type story stacks up bodies like cordwood. A romance focused story probably does not have as high a body count. It has very little to do with what is "dark" or "edgy," but everything to do with what the individual writer/rper finds appropriate. That said, like anything else it can be handled poorly. Mindless killing is sometimes just that, mindless. When handled or viewed well by players and their characters it really highlights something horrific about the the world. Namely that there are people capable of it. It also opens up that lovely moral quandries like the classic Batman/Joker debate of "how many death's is Bats responsible for not just killing the Joker." As for how it is viewed through the lens of my own character... Hrmm. Yssen's case might be a bit extreme. Being brief and vague about his back story, he is (for all intents and purposes) as child soldier. Trained to fight and kill from a very young age, and conditioned to not really have the act of killing affect him. Killing a person and killing a deer are not at all different to him in terms of scale of act. A deer has just as much right to live as a human does, and they usually die for similar reasons. Now that said, he did leave his super fun childhood behind, and he doesn't wander around just murdering people left and right. It is just another solution on the table, and other things might be more appropriate or better solutions. His hard and fast rule on it is pretty simple, a person has to put death on the table as on option. You don't kill a deer just to kill a deer. You kill a deer because you need the deer's meat or skin. Same thing with humans. Some action, intent, or something makes their death necessary to resolve the situation. In short, Yssen does not kill without purpose or reason (like a crazy person). He just doesn't feel bad about it afterwards (like a morally skewed person). It should be noted that Yssen is probably on the far side of the metric as far as most people go, though. The same could be said of say... a former Garlean soldier (they have to kill something every day as part of their training, often times people) or a 20 year veteran (they have seen and done some things). Anywho, thanks for posting up the topic. These things are cool to think on and dicuss. Yar. ^ ^

Even the Word of God doesn't necessarily make anything clear, though. Whenever these topics come up, people weigh in on them. I think we're all just tired of the most accurate response being "Sure, but maybe not" for the myriad different reasons we're given as things become more clear, or we have conflicting sources, or we're just guessing. Until there is a full blown FFXIV Ultimania or some other such giant guide "sure, but maybe not" is going to always be the most common answer. Word of God as far as lore for the moment comes from the Story and Lore Devs, even when it contradicts what NPCs are saying. Everything stated by any NPC should always be taken with a grain of salt. That is spiffy state we live in. Sorta like the people piecing together lore for SoIaF, it is all strewn across character PoV and all of it was suspect. Then the World Book came out and confirmed the things that Martin did not confirm in person. Nature of story telling in this fashion. Well, yeah, but in that case we can just slap a sticky up in the forum saying "Every concept is fine, but maybe not later on." It's fun to discuss these things. It goes both ways with the right and wrong, but I have been baffled by the fact that we do not just blanket say that and only that instead of some of the other... stuff for a while now. To the subject at hand. It is an interesting concept, but not necessarily a unique one in terms of the Main Story or plots and story bits come up with by other characters. Do not get me wrong, that fact does not make the concept a bad thing. Back in 1.0 Yssen knew of 25 Garlean PCs ICly (he had a list) and I knew of many others besides those OOCly. Didn't exactly ruin things forever by being a broad concept. My best advice would be to Echo (see what I did there ;p) the slight edit from my last post. Worry more about what the characters believe rather than if they are right in that belief. In 1.0 there was a Roe that believed he was the Chosen of Byergot. Summoned a magic smacky hammer to try and smite things and everything. Was he? Dunno. He certainly believed he was. He was also a Monetarist who believed he was above everyone else because he was rich and junk. To one character that Roe is absolutely a holy chosen. To another he is just another Monetarist to be among the first thrown up on the wall when the revolution comes. The "absolute truth" of it doesn't matter. What a character does because of their belief does. My two cents. Hope it has been helpful. ^ ^

Slight edit because I hit enter too fast. - Because of the fluid nature of the lore and story it is often best to determine what it is your character believes, rather than worry about whether or not your character is right in that belief. Being right or wrong in the OOC of it does nothing to serve character/story development when you get down to brass tacks.

It can be pretty difficult to say what an NPC is in terms of Job or Class. Take it as an example of a character not being defined only being a Job or Class. There is a line blur that exists because Classes are professions as well as areas of combat study. For example, a Gladiator is someone that is trained to fight with a sword and shield, that is the training the guild offers. A Gladiator is also anyone that earns their living fighting on the Blood Sands of Ul'dah. There are several known Gladiators that do not fight with sword and shield at all, including one famous former champion. We do have examples of NPCs being defined as specific Classes, but it is still murky even there. Thancred is defined and referred to as a Rogue, yet he has also been called a Bard on more than one occasion (despite the fact we never see him fight with a bow ever). Y'shtola uses lots of funky magic, and according to her VA (more than one, if we wish to get down to brass tacks) is referred to in story and production notes as a WHM (and yeah, her VA absolutely knows what a WHM is in terms of this game's story and such). She certainly has access to WHM only abilities, but she has at no time been outright called a WHM by the game. Why? Probably because it doesn't matter to the story. It may never matter to the story, or it may be such a big deal that it is being saved for some later point in the plot. At present, this little tid bit only serves the role of being a point of debate (usually as to the ability for characters to be non-shroud bound WHMs) and whether one agrees that Y'shtola is a WHM or isn't is fairly immaterial, since we do not know how she acquired those abilities in the first place. NPCs have whatever abilities suit the needs of the story (whether through narrative or just through a fight) and the same is true of our own RP characters. As long as a widget/job/class/maguffin is used in service to story, it doesn't matter what it does or is. In the end, it is an aspect of the character, and not necessarily the most defining point. In general, it is hard to go wrong when using this approach. My two cents. Hope it has been helpful. ^ ^

There's speculation thst A-Towa-Cant was of Duskwight heritage, but we have no firm confirmation on that afaik. I can grant the idea that Elezen heritage for Cant might be possible (though recently we have been shown that all the Pajal whose ears we can see are pointy), but Duskies are Duskies because they rejected being allowed on the surface in exchange for living under the Elemental's rules. This does not rule out the possibility, but it does sorta make the theory much less likely. It's based on his appearance, which is not consistent with an Elezen of Wildwood heritage. The only way to be 100% positive on that end these days is whether or not he has a face tatoo or a beard. On the wildwood end, whether he has ear clasp things. Beyond those two difference and some of the more obvious differences in skin tone (Wildwoods cannot be blue! Bwahahahahaha!) There really is not that much difference. Then again, the Elementals are dicks, and co-opting one of the proud defiant into one of their direct servants whether they like it or not is ABSOLUTELY in the wheel house of dick moves they would make. ;p

Step 1 - Cobble together a made up Duskwight holiday. Step 2 - Act like it is completely normal because of made up holiday. Step 3 - See how many people he can get to join in the customs of made up Duskwight holiday. Step 4 - Complain about oppression when people express offense. Step 5 - ... Step 6 - Profit

Given that the Titan weapons look like literal pieces of crap, I think I prefer this to the alternative. ;p
