  1. Depending on which character I ended up as, I'd either mourn the loss of my perfect rack (granted it would be in exchange for ears, a tail, and a rockin' six pack) or jump for joy at finally being taller than everyone. After that, I'd probably just stay and have fun with black magic and sharp things. Real life is a terrible place. I don't know why people keep going there.
  2. Join usssss... Join the Miqo'te horde! We have cookies. But yeah, I agree that this character has a great aesthetic to him Good job.
  3. Finally had time to play my characters! ...Well, I played Mali a lot at least. I wanted to see the story, and mrd is just so brutal to everything I had to play it. 8-) Anyroad, here's Tiv looking fabulous for the ladies (and the gentlemen, he's not picky ) And here's Mali being Mali. You might want to back away before she swings that thing. D:
  4. I know the feeling with the screenshots, I especially like how Merri caught Mali mid /surprise in the second pic. Too perfect! Also, Khaze's pictures are the bomb. Not just because they have a bomb in them... >_>; Merri and Xenedra have always been nice folks who try to play with everyone...even if there's fifty people at once. I've always respected that about them, even if it doesn't look like it because my character is a short-tempered something-something. If you ever see Mali wandering around in the future, go ahead and start something. I'm usually bored anyway.
  5. Well, in case it wasn't obvious I had a blast. Mali loves meeting new people to make sarcastic comments about! But really, that was a lot of fun, I got to meet a lot of new players and see some old players again, I loved it. I missed going to events like that in 1.0. Definitely going to try to make it for future events (and join the shell hint hint wink wink).
  6. I will try to be there, though I haven't decided *who* will be going yet.
  7. Man, I love stuff like this. I always like to see how other people go through the process of creating something, be it a character or a story or anything really. Personally, most of the time my characters (and any writing I do, really) come from lots of different origins at once, bits and pieces here and there that converge to create a cohesive whole. While I do base some aspects of the characters on my own personality (Mali's loyalty to friends and unpredictable behavior, Tiv's politeness in mixed company and stoic attitude) I like to make them different enough from myself that I am challenged to think in new ways, and/or distanced enough from the characters that I can let things happen to them (such as battle damage, or even death) without feeling like it's personal. Anyway, for the details: For Tiv, the name came waaaaay before the character in FFXIV, and Tiv actually started out very different from what he is now. The original "Tiv" was a fairy in a dark fairy tale I was writing (that I would still like to return to in some fashion), and was originally named Tiv Pifilloffolus. He was a very sarcastic, cowardly character to be the foil for the serious and unafraid protagonist. Much like the current Tiv he was both very magical, and (out of all things) had purple hair, but other than that they are entirely different characters. After the initial "Tiv" character I never really used it as a name for a fleshed out, playable character, and used it mostly for gags because the entire name was very sing-song-y and goofy. Eventually, "Tiv" became my go-to name for male characters in MMOs simply because it was short and simple and never, ever used. Sometimes it would be extended to "Tivrin," usually because the game had a minimum character limit for names. I never used it for RP, but the fact that I used it a lot was a deciding factor in naming the current Tiv. Flash forward to FFXIV 1.0, I start RPing with my character Mali (we'll get to her soon). While Mali is a fine character and all, I suddenly get the urge to try playing a male character. In my writing the main characters are equally distributed between female and male, in RP I'd rarely play male characters at all. So I go through the races and try to think up a character concept, when I hear that some people in the RP community play male Miqo'te using female avatars, which sounds like a really good middle ground for someone who isn't used to playing a character that is visibly male outside of the imagination. So, the character concept starts easily: The character is a male Miqo'te crossdressing as a female. Because I'm lazy, I use my generic male MMO name (Tiv!), but I wanted to be at least a little serious, so I didn't give him the goofy surname of the original. Instead I tacked on Grimmgeist because a) I am a fairy tale nerd, and since the original character was a fairy I wanted to give a nod to the Brothers Grimm, and b) I like spooky things, and ghosts are spooky, and since Grimm is German the ghost part may as well be too. Thus, the name "Tiv Grimmgeist" was born. I would later lengthen his full name to Tivault because it sounded cool, and somewhat olde-English. After I made up the silly name and the basic character concept I started fleshing it out, and the more I thought about it the more complex it got. I decided that he should have a foppish personality, and because I was still new to the lore I made him a foreigner so I wouldn't have to worry about lore as much. Then, it became a series of questions that kept coming up in my head. Where did he come from? I made up a country. Why is he so foppish? I made him a noble. Why is he crossdressing? I made him a fugitive. Why is he a fugitive? Why is he so focused on magic? Why why why why? The questions kept coming, and I was getting more into studying the lore at the same time, and now I have an entire novella to write out for Tiv's backstory on his wiki page. =_= Most of my ideas for Tiv all settled for the most part in 1.0, and have really only been tweaked a little to fit new information. When I became more comfortable with male characters I briefly played Tiv as a RP character in TSW, where he had a much darker personality to fit with the darker tone of the game. I added a little bit of that to 2.0 Tiv, but except for tweaking his first name to sound more "Miqo'te" his story and personality has hardly changed, aside from tacking on another 5 years. Personality-wise, I purposefully made FFXIV!Tiv my complete opposite; he's sociable, exuberant, flirtatious, and easily opens up to new people and new experiences, partly because it's a good exercise for me, and partly because I just wanted a character like that. === Mali's story is shorter. The name started as a joke between an old MMO friend of mine. I was tired of using the same name for all of my female characters (Saeris, which originally came from an old comic idea of mine), so when I rerolled on FFXI with him I made a character whose name was "what might happen if someone translated my name into Japanese and then translated it back wrong." The fact that it wasn't already taken was pretty amazing, and I didn't remember until after I had gotten attached to the name that it's also the name of a country, but whatever. It stuck, and I liked it. The original Mali's personality came from a lot of IM role play I had done with the aforementioned friend, albeit nerfed quite a lot. In our IMs we made up some ridiculous stuff for both teh lulz and because we ran on "rule of cool" more than anything. I think at the height of our IM shenanigans I was an Eldritch Horror in human form who wielded a guitar-scythe and used equal parts music magic and good ol' hack n' slash to get shit done, and he was a half-vampire with a demonic entity stuck in his head and was essentially a Dragoon with super strength, and somehow there was a giant mech shaped like a mushroom and what is this I don't even. But anyway, the point is that FFXI Mali inherited a lot of things from IM Mali; scythes and black magic as her primary weapons (yay Dark Knight), insanity and unpredictability (originally from being mini-Cthulhu, now just from being "touched" by some eldritch abomination), a fierce loyalty to her friends, and a sadistic love for killing things. When I started playing FFXIV, Mali was my go-to character name for sentimental reasons. She was my main in FFXI, after all. By that time I had gotten pretty tired of playing a "boring human-analogous race" and rolled 1.0 Mali as a Miqo'te. Originally I was planning to play her with the same insanity and sadistic glee as FFXI Mali, but the more I RPed with her and watched the RP community the more I realized that crazy cat girls came in large quantities, and because I wanted to be a little more unique I played her as a radically different character (ironically, much more like my own personality than anything else), who grew to be a very interesting character, but not one that really fit the "Mali" motif from FFXI. Once I saw the designs for female Roegadyn, I knew that I could "revive" FFXI Mali come 2.0 without reverting to the human-analogous race. Granted, FFXI Mali was made god-knows-how-many years ago so the character has undergone some changes, mostly nerfing her "RP powers" further (no cthulhu relations, less chaotic evil) and being fleshed out as an actual person rather than a teenager's power fantasy. === Jesus Christ I am so sorry for the text wall. I'll stop now.
  8. I. Basic Info Characters: Tivahlt Grimmgeist, Mali Bloodscythe (both are stubs. I have too much stuff to do, I can only work so fast!) Primary character: Mali Bloodscythe, but I flail about between characters a lot. Linkshells: None yet Primary RP linkshell: N/A II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): All of the above, depending on the scenario. If I'm doing game things solo or with non-RP players, I'm in light RP mode and not going to RP. If I'm not doing anything important (grinding, sitting in town, etc.) and an RP character comes up to me and starts RP, I will join in. If I'm around primarily RP players, I'm in heavy RP mode and will assume everything is RP unless told otherwise. If you aren't sure what to do, send a /t my way! I love RP, but that's not the only thing I play the game for. Views on RP combat and injuries: Yes and yes, but with exceptions. I will do combat as long as the other person does not go god mode and start controlling the fight. So if you say, "Slappy McAwesome moves too quick for Tivahlt Grimmgeist to dodge and stabs him in the heart," I will say, "no, that is unfair," and stop playing with you. Possibly forever. If you injure my character via broken bones or stab wounds, I will go seek out a healer (or spend time healing myself) and the character will be injured for a while until they recover. I would request that you don't actively seek out to permanently disable my character, such as severing a limb or removing eyes/tongue etc. If we establish during a battle beforehand that serious shit is going down (death, dismemberment, etc.) then I will accept it within reason (see god mode rule above). If you kill my character in an honest fight, I will die. I will be sad that I can't RP as my super awesome character anymore, but if it was fair and square I'm not going to call BS. Generally, though, I'm not going to do any heavy fights that involve permanent physical character consequences unless I *really* trust you as a player. Views on IC romance: Of course! I enjoy RP of all kinds, and romance is a great way to explore characters and let them grow. (Plus, Tiv is a flirtatious little bugger anyway.) That said, I don't do erotic RP. I don't fault anyone who does, it's just not really my specialty for various reasons. If you want to have sexual encounters with my characters (and I openly accept them because they are a part of most romantic relationships), I'll do it as long as the stuff after kissing and agreeing happens during a "fade to black" moment. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Family relations would be difficult...but being otherwise related to my characters (same place/area/etc.) is cool with me as long as you run the idea by me first. Since my characters don't really have completed backgrounds right now, though, I'm guessing that won't happen anytime soon! Views on lore: I like lore, at least the stuff that is easily accessible here or elsewhere. Lore is fun! I also like to slap lore in the face and use it like my plaything, but even with the craziest bullshit I try to keep it at least close to lore...or at least inspired by it...I'm open to lots of new ideas and spins on the vanilla stuff, is what I'm saying. If you start saying you're Bahamut's daughter/son/demonspawn or a traveler from another dimension, though, I might have trouble suspending my disbelief... Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): I'm open to whatever. In 1.0 I RPed in all of them at some point. If it was personal stuff happening (i.e. not stuff you want random players to hear while they run around quest hunting) I'd usually make a party with whoever I RPed with, though. Really, it's up to whoever I'm playing with. III. Other Info Country: The U.S. of A. Timezone: PST (-8 GMT) Contact info: Skype for RP: tivahlt.mali Skype for unrelated stuff: chaosmali Email: [email protected]. If you can't reach me from one of those, I'm probably dead.
  9. I only got to play for a few hours on Friday morning (by which I mean I stayed up until 8 AM from the servers going live...I am not smart sometimes >_>; ) so I didn't really have time to grab any really cool pictures, but here's what I have anyway.
  10. Tivahlt: Polite Playboy (new) Mali: F*cking Crazy I'm sure I'll come up with better combinations as soon as I post this. :B
  11. Because I can! No, really. That's about it. I've liked the designs for male Miqo'te and female Roegadyn since I first saw them. I actually made Tiv (as a crossdresser) in 1.0 just because I couldn't wait to have a real male Miqo'te (which at the time, I didn't know would even be a thing). Also, I was sick of being a generic human representative from playing one for years in FFXI.
  12. I think it depends on who your character is (or, who you decide who your character is because you really like a name!). If your character is a Roegadyn, lived with other Roegadyn, and grew up in that culture, they're probably going to have a Roegadyn name. (or in the case of Hellsguard, an English/common version of that name :B) On the other hand, if your character was a Hyur, but was adopted by Roegadyn and lived in that culture, they might have a Roegadyn name too! Or vice-versa. Like Aldeus and Garryson said, it's a big world where a lot of weird circumstances can happen. If you like a name that doesn't "fit the character's race," then handwave it off or use that as a plot point for your character's story.
  13. I died. === Personally I tend to use the British swears they use in the game, like "bugger" or "bloody," and just kind of roll with that (adding in things like "sod" and "bollocks" if I'm feeling particularly swearish). If I do go into regular swears, I try to give them different spellings, like "feck" for fuck (though I will probably still say "fuck" most of the time, I have a bad habit of swearing a lot  ). I also like the various god + body part swears, though sadly neither of my characters would use those...well, maybe one just for the sake of blaspheming, but definitely not the other. Also, probably something that slips people up once or twice (myself included), is that "god" and "hell" should usually be pluralized, given Eorzean mythology. So "bloody hell" becomes "bloody hells," and "god dammit" becomes "gods dammit." Granted, some of our characters might not necessarily subscribe to Eorzean beliefs, but as a general rule it works.
  14. Guys, I think we have James Bond playing with us D:
  15. I feel your pain. 24 and some people still think I'm in high school when I talk about my classes.
  16. Took a few just now, because I felt bad looking at everyone else without letting y'all look back. They're not the best quality, I took them with my webcam and it's nighttime here...not really conducive to pretty pictures.
  17. This sounds like an awesome idea, and I'd love to join in, especially since I need to actually start thinking of how I'm going to rebuild my characters (or make new ones D: )...five years is a lot of time! I've done a lot of RP for lots of things in the past (on everything including forums, IMs, tables, voice, MMOs, and running around in the middle of the woods) but I always feel so nervous when I'm around people with so much talent. It doesn't help that I've been AWOL from RPing with these guys for so long that I hardly even remember any of the stuff I did.:dazed: my skype is chaosmali (big surprise ), and I'm online most of the time, usually from 2-3 PST to the wee hours of the morning. I'd be up for voice or text but considering my voice is much more...err...feminine than my character of choice, text might be best. >_>;;
  18. Aysun remembers me. My life is complete. Kylin, I definitely did *something* for the tribute video, but I don't remember if I was in Mog House...I guess my memory is just full of holes.
  19. Hi guys, I'm coming back, even though you probably don't remember me! It's been a while thanks to school, Dalamud falling, some minor life-altering events, et cetera. Even though I'm legacy I haven't even been in beta until this past weekend...partially because I'm scatter-brained but mostly because the real world got in the way. Since 1.0 went down I've filled the roleplay hole in my heart with LARP (don't judge me!) but there's only so much a small, arthritic girl can play in that sort of game, and with the new launch on its way I'm hearing the siren call of an MMORPG with actual RP, where I'm not constrained by silly things like gender or grip strength... I'm guessing most of you won't remember my characters either, seeing as I was a fairly sporadic player and not very active in the community, but if you do remember them (Mali Darksidhe and Tiv Grimmgeist) then kudos! They aren't coming back! Well, sort of. I don't know what my main come phase 4/full launch will be, but it probably won't be either of them. Tiv is going to stay the same character (with a gender change, of course!), but I don't really know what to do with him. As is, he's a character I would RP, but not a character I would play in FFXIV. The disciplines that fit his character just don't fit my preferred playstyle. But at the same time, even though I hardly ever RPed as him, the RP I had as Tiv was the most memorable and I want to continue playing as him just for the personality... Mali is getting retired permanently, and if I decide otherwise I'll be putting her heart and soul into a new character with a different name. (I'll still be keeping the 1.0 character though, because come on! I worked hard on that Warrior.) Long story short, she just isn't the character I thought she would be. The original Mali was a character of mine from FFXI, a name that some folks thought stood for "Malice," with good reason. She might even be showing up soon...not that you should be worried or anything! I'm still tossing ideas in my head after all. Oh, and on top of everything, my old cross-mmo guild is coming to ARR, but they won't be on Balmung when they get here...so either my attendance will continue to be terrible, or I'll be abandoning a good group of old friends, and I don't like either option. But juggling two server's worth of characters with life, school, and everything else on top? Not gonna happen! Anyway, I've probably typed way too much and it is super late now and I should go to bed. I'll be catching up with y'all later. :cactuar:
  20. And now I know why I paid for the 6 month sub even though I'd be too busy with school to use half of it. I can just imagine all the NPCs and alts I'll be making come 2.0...
  21. Holy crap that cackle is frelling terrifying. The predictions seem to be all over the place though...I mean there's a 68 hour discrepancy between Ifrit going down and Moggle Mog going down, so if anything all the predictions are too high.
  22. I will not be able to attend the Friday or Monday events as I'll be away from my computer that weekend and celebrating my mom's birthday on Monday. If you have someone ready and willing to fill in my spot then go ahead, I'll be cheering you guys on in spirit!
  23. Since no one is being daring today I guess I'll be the first. I VOLUNTEER MALI AS A CONTESTANT! She is very self-conscious and doesn't like fashion very much, but she's also a merc and not terribly bright, so offer enough money and play down the fashion aspect and she would probably assume she's just there to show support for a political rally. Once the clothes come out, she'll be honor-bound to wear whatever they decide to put on her, whether she likes it or not. For now I'm throwing my hat in with the Margarah team, but we'll see what happens. Either side can buy her off, really.
  24. OoC recently changed hands and has become the "Intermission" linkshell. Gospel Gestalt is the leader, but just about everyone has pearling rights so just ask around and you should get a pearl no problem!
  25. *signed!* ...No one minds that Tiv has boobs right now, right? Just making sure...
