I think the problem is, most people don't know and Square-Enix is really not helping us out to test things for them. (You'd think if they WANTED us to test crafting they would actually make it feasible...) The recipes that Asyria linked to are really the ones most people know of.

There actually seems to be a cap right now on how many leves you can do in a day. I jumped on this morning and did four leves for Bearded Rock and three leves for Skull Valley. After that I was high enough level to try Bloodshore, so I went back to town to collect those. I get a message currently saying I am unable to trade leves for new ones. I asked around and it is confirmed: you can only do so many leves in a day; after that you have to wait for the 48 hour cooldown to trade in your finished leves for new ones. So if the current system stays in place as is, there could be thousands of leves available to me in game, and I'd only be able to do 7 every 48 hours. I really hope that is not the case. Or if it is the case, I hope they only charge me a subscription fee for every other day. ;P

You invite a friend over to your house for the afternoon. Describe what your friend would see upon entering your home. A small, one-bedroom apartment dwelling in typical Ul'dahn style. Small lanterns and tea candles lend the interior a warm and cozy glow. The furnishings look second-hand but well-kept, and there are clothes everywhere. I would hastily be tossing a plethora of jackets, shirts, and undergarments into my bedroom while shouting for my friend to make themselves at home. During the casual small-talk that ensues, your friend asks you if you have read any good books lately. How do you respond? âI picked up an excellent book on exotic cocktails from the Far East the last time I went to the market." Your friend eventually leaves, and you're still bored. Restless, you leave the house and set out for a walk. Describe the neighborhood you live in. Not the best, but not a shantytown, either. My apartment is one of twenty in a building along a modest street. There aren't trees and fountains everywhere, but there aren't bums in the gutters or trash piles, so that's nice. A couple blocks from me is the Goblin's Goblet tavern. Oh no! An orphan is in trouble! Down the street from where you stand, a small street urchin is being bullied by three larger youths. What do you do about it? An urchin is being bullied? Not in my neighborhood! I run up and give the first one a good whack on the head, then tell the rest of them to get lost before I track down their parents. Adventure time! The next day, still restless, you decide that what you need is a good change of pace. How do you pack for your four-day road trip to Ishgard? Just one pack? Okay.. well, I'd carry along a folding scythe in case I encounter any interesting botanicals that look like they'd make a good brew. I'd also bring along a good weapon that's not too heavy, maybe my throwing knives or some spiked knuckles... a few changes of clothes (you did say just one pack right?), a hat, and some sandwiches to eat along the way. Along your journey, you spot some bandits waiting at a bridge across a wide but slow moving river up ahead of you. They haven't seen you yet. You need to cross the bridge to get to where you're going. How do you handle the situation? Ohh tricky.. Alright, first I'd jump behind some cover so they don't spot me before I'm ready. Then I'd put some dirt smudges on my face and muss up my hair a bit (but not too much..). Then I'd stow any jewelry I was wearing in my pack and maybe rip my shirt suggestively across the chest. Next, I'd throw a knife at them from the cover of the bushes and try to land it just to the side, so they notice it but no one gets hurt. Then, I'd come running out of the brush crying, begging them to help me across the bridge because there's a local law enforcement group after me and they've got knives. They'll actually help me across the bridge and then run to hide themselves, to avoid trouble from officials. You have just arrived for the first time in a new big city. Where do you go first? To the nicest public bathhouse I can afford! Somewhere with fluffy towels and silky oils. For being the 1,000th tourist to the city, you have been given a 6,000 gil voucher to spend as you like at the Ishgard Department Store (think FFXIV version of Macy's). What do you spend it on? Maybe a nice, engraved pistol. Or a few locally designed outfits. Or maybe some new earrings. Or maybe... All of that shopping has made you deliriously hungry. What sort of food establishment do you seek out for lunch? Someplace light and cheap where I can scope out the local scene. Probably a tavern near the Market District, or a food stall in the center of town. Five months later and safely back at home, you realize the Winter Festival is approaching! What sort of present do you pick out for your mother (or nearest living relative, or closest friend)? A nice, new pack of fortune telling cards. The gilded kind that really makes the tourists think you're legit.

I made this originally for TALE but thought it would be fun to see everyone's responses at the RPC. The following are some questions intended to get you thinking about how your character would react in different situations. Answer in character! But the Torchwood in Wales had the best accents! Awww, all those Roegadyn are going to sound like Ianto Jones in my head now. -
List of Retainer Names (roleplay-friendly examples)

I tried and unfortunately, no. You can't put an apostrophe in your name. -
My thoughts on the beta thus far: We have definitely come a long way since the first alpha tests, when all most of us tested out was how many times we could enter our username and password within a two hour span. The good: GORGEOUS atmosphere. Really, the game is stunning. Wandering around La Noscea, looking up at the star-filled night sky, noticing an airship floating past you out of the corner of your eye, it's all really impressive. I love that there are sound effects of waves lapping at rocks and seagulls in the air when you're near the beach. The ok-but-needs-work: Character customization: Guildleves: Crafting jobs: The absolute crap Linkshells The tester community I don't want to end this on such a negative note, so I will say that this game shows a lot of promise. Do I think it's going to be ready by release date? No, not really. Will they probably push it out anyway and give us patches galore in the first few weeks? More than likely, yes. A lot of stuff has not been tested and probably never will be before release. Square-Enix took out all the armor and weapons from vendors with the idea that we were to craft our own gear. Except.. crafting was broken. And there was a glitch that allowed us to wear any level armor on any job. So what ended up happening was you'd see level 15-20 players running around in level 25-30 basic chainmail or whatnot, wielding broken level 16 weapons because you could never find someone to repair your gear. We have no idea how balanced party play actually is at the moment, especially beyond level 20. However, the two storyline quests they put into the game show promise for an engaging storyline, and the world is fantastically enormous. I have faith that at the very least, we will have a lot of places to explore and a lot of NPC quests to fulfill while our leves are on cooldown. Also there is cornbread. :approve:

List of Retainer Names (roleplay-friendly examples)

Nice work Faust! The division of clan name preferences is interesting (though frustrating for purists when it comes to the apostrophe in the Seeker names >_<), I'll have to split up the name generator further when I've got more time. Here's a bunch more names from NPCs, as promised: Miqo'te Thata Khamazom M'zimzizi Qhas Chalahko Z'onggo F'abodji H'rhanbolo Daca Jinjahl N'nmulika S'raemha G'nanghal W'ahtoa Wyra Khamazom (Thata's sister??) Ighii Moui F'zhumii Roegadyn Sundhimal Holasfhis Sathzant Smydhaemr Syngsmyd Skarnwaen Bloemerl Maetistym Waekbyrt Dhemsunn Hasthwab Aergwynt Elezen Males Eugennoix Ferdillaix Carrilaut Martiallais Joellaut Notrelchamps Robairlain Faucillien Xavalien Mharelak Liautroix Elezen Females Trinne Louviaune Astrid Jainelette Triaine Audaine Lalafell Females Fufuna Hihine Sosoze Shoshoma Rerenasu Nunuba Lalafell Males Bango Zango Tatasako* Nanapiri* Lafla Morfla *These names follow the female Lalafell naming conventions, but after looking at their little Lalafell faces I came to the conclusion that these were definitely dudes. Also, I unfortunately could not find many Lalafell men in the areas of the city I visited. Hyur Females Dympna Lefleda Iofa Maisie Ositha Gallia Kylene Isleen Frances Cassandra Moruith Hyur Males Gautzelin Colson Kerrich Leveridge Clifton Coynach Hetzkin Clarembald Shilgen Neale Bayard -

To be honest, I think it is one moderator at ffochat.com that is ruining it for us, and the inaction of the other mods to do anything about it. The whole issue with it is that when you connect to ffochat.com, it auto populates you into the #vanadiel room. They're going to have to fix this eventually anyway, once more people start moving over to FF14 and have no interest in chatting in an FF11 area. Instead of dealing with it head on, Charitwo chose to blame us for making use of the ffochat.com IRC in the way it was intended: to bring together FF11 and FF14 players for communication. I have scoured the IRC's website and there is NOTHING there that says "you must remain in the #vanadiel room at all times while using our IRC." He is simply being a douche about it for whatever personal reason he has, and he's given the whole thing a bad name in the eyes of the RPC, which is unfortunate. To be honest, we have a little over a month before the game comes out & I do not see the IRC being much use to us after that point, especially if people are planning on making some kind of general roleplayers alternative linkshell. Also I really don't want to take over operator responsibilities for a new RPC channel, as I didn't want them to begin with on the other one.

I was unaware that Allakhazam had an IRC server, but yeah if it is better than how some people at the FFOChat server are treating us then I am all for moving TALE's room as well.

Nice calendar, good job!

Moonshadow Darkly! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoo! okay yeah that's fine. :approve:

I'm not sticking to them for my character at all (Miqo'te with full name Aveline Blue), because I'm not fond of the Miqo'te names. But, I've come up with a plausible in-character explanation for her unusual name. I think also that if we were to treat the FF14 world as realistic, it would make sense that there would be names borrowed from different racial naming conventions. In FF14 so far the races are not as divided as they were in XI (for instance, none of the city-states are "native lands" to any of the races). There seem to be some cultural divides (like Elezen are supposed to be excellent leatherworkers because of their traditions), but if everyone has been living together it would make sense that some Elezen might want to give their kid a Hyur name, or a Lalafell may name their child after their Miqo'te best friend they've known since childhood.

Spiciest food I've eaten was at this Thai place I visit from time to time: http://www.yelp.com/biz/baan-thai-restaurant-portland Baan Thai! "Low" heat = most place's medium. I can do "medium" and still enjoy the taste of the meal, though I have done "hot" a few times to show I could haha. It is always funny to take some new people who have never been here with us in a group. The guys ALWAYS will try to show how tough they are and inevitably end up with tears streaming down their faces. When you order, the waiter/ress will warn you multiple times, "This is REALLY hot, are you sure you want it that spicy?" When my boyfriend ordered this fish dinner (forgot the name of what it was exactly), he ordered it "as spicy as you can make it" and the waitress looked like he had just asked her for a gun. The chef actually came out and looked him up and down with a raised eyebrow and said, "Are you SURE." He ate some of it, but couldn't finish. I tried a bite and my mouth was warm for the rest of the evening. He was hurting for daaaays.

Seriously? What a douche thing to do. If you connect via a client you can modify your login scripts to where you are just logging in to #FF14RPChat. I took #vanadiel off my login list. If you are using the online clients I think you have to just close out that tab after you log in. Edit: I just tried to join #vanadiel to see if there was a mod on I could complain to but it's not letting me in that room either. Which is honestly fine, since the #vanadiel room is usually a bunch of pricks talking about all the hookers they've never had in Las Vegas. Edit #2: APPARENTLY they have banned several roleplayers from the #vanadiel channel. Good lord. Fortunately the people on the #eorzeapedia channel seem much more friendlier anyway, and the general owners of ffochat.com don't have an issue with us.. Edit #3: (final edit!) Charitwo spoke up and said this: if you're only here for the rp channel, then we don't need you join flooding #vanadiel the reason is you clearly don't want to be in the channel, as you leave immediately after joining, so i am circumventing the force join So, he's banning RPers that don't want to use the #vanadiel chat room but are getting force connected upon log in.

What a great concept! Love the story, can't wait to see more of these two. :approve:

Baby steps. First they need to actually implement female Highlander Hyurs. What? Square-Enix actually implement something that people want? Oh, such dreams, such dreams.. Any~way, something I've noticed is that a lot of people still refer to the world as Eorzea, when Hydaelyn (sp? I never remember where the "a" goes) is the name of the world itself. Eorzea = Aldenard continent and Vylbrand island.

Who says I don't also have knives? I've also got on hand my personal zombie weapon of choice: A baseball bat that can be easily wrapped in oil soaked rags and set aflame.

That makes sense Tadir; it's what I do for my characters too. Even when I'm using the namegen to get an NPC name, I use it as a base and modify the name to whatever I want from there. Definitely understand where you're coming from. If a few of us in beta start compiling name lists we should have a good selection of examples to post soon enough. I've got a small list of about 15 names from NPCs back at home that I'll post tomorrow morning.

OK this feels like an advertisement so I apologize in advance for that, but I made a character generator with names based entirely off of the naming conventions I've seen so far in the beta. Some names are actual names taken from minor NPCs (no major characters), but most are just following the naming styles. http://www.adventureleague.net/ffxiv-name-generator The Lalafell females don't have last names because I haven't seen any in game with a last name. However, someone on the ZAM forums was discussing this and they have a theory that female names would rhyme like: Zuzudesu Susudesu. So it would be a-a-b c-c-b in structure. Once classes are done and Beta3 starts up I plan on re-analyzing the names lists for all races and adding the theoretical naming structure for Lalafell female last names until we see evidence of something else in the game. Basically the names break down like this: Hyur: Incredibly varied. I've seen English, Germanic, and Japanese sounding names on Hyur. Example names: Kora, Mardian Elezen: Similar to Elvaan names from FFXI. Elezen names sound somewhat French and unpronounceable. Example names: Amoura, Virgaud Roegadyn: Definitely very old Germanic sounding. Example names: Ruthyhk, Deigensmyd Miqo'te: There are two distinct naming styles for Miqo'te NPCs: some have an apostrophe in their names along with 2 consecutive consonants, such as: O'takka. Others have a short first name followed by a longish last name, similar to FFXI, such as: Bhyi Vomdezeloh. I noticed a lot of names have "z" in them this time around. Lalafell: Lalafell female names are the reverse of what they were for Tarutarus in FFXI. Whereas in FFXI the Lalafell F may have been named Ropipi, in FFXIV she would be named Pipiro. A-A-B, like I mentioned above. For male names the last name has the same ending as the first, such as Forrem Gobrem. Hope that helps!

Which version of the game will you be getting?
Aveline replied to Nikolai's topic in FFXIV Discussion
I believe it was eventually confirmed somewhere that goggles = standard pre-order and helm = CE pre-order. Square-Enix said the goggles were put in to give the standard pre-order people a way to catch up to the CE pre-orders. -
Moonshadow lifted her eternal gaze and twitched her ears at the sound of her beloved vocobo's unholy melody. "Dread Lord Feathers! You made it!" In the obsidian shadows, the Miqo'te scratched the bird's iniquitous chin. "Softly now, Dread Lord. There are hunters that hunt those that hunt the hunted on the streets tonight. We would not want to spoil our arrival in this new land so quickly now, would we?" She gave a sigh of mournful longing, her skin shimmering in empathy for her soul. Long she posed there by the docks before she heard the handsomely glittering man speak his hated words. Her eyes glowed briefly a deep murderous crimson as she stepped into the lantern light. "I am here, hunter!" She cried harshly, unsheathing her blade. "And I have the fabled moonsteel dagger! The very same moonsteel dagger forged in the lamentable cries of the undying Ages, lost forever to this world in the Dimension of Eternal Torment. Passed down to me through twenty generations of Moonshadow Witch Queens! But I will not test my blade on your heart tonight, stranger! Menphina's light is not at its peak and this is no fortunate night for bloodshed." So saying, Darkly slipped into the shadows with nary a sound and was gone from sight. There would be time enough to do battle with the nemeses of her kind. For now she must scout out a safe lair for her and her kin, and also find some leggier and less sensible boots.
