  1. The Mo'quito flattened its ears slightly watching the Sea Wolf, moving no muscle but its eyes, tail still twitching. The Lalafel cringed at the abrasive and absurdly loud seller of "Crappe". "Thal's Fire, if it be your will, that amatuer and this accursed crowd be swallowed up," she muttered darkly before turning and smiling back at the Elzen. "Okay kid... Here's the deal..." she said brushing her bangs out of her eyes revealing a firey red gem. "I'm a born trader, blessed by the zodiac with a growing business, and I could use an Alchemist so I can sell more items to my customers. You'll get commission plus a share in profit, 20% which is generous, you follow me or take the next airship back to the tree huggers." The Elzen sighed. "You get to the point." "There's no use selling if you aren't buying kid." "Fine, fine... I wanted adventure so sure." With a flourish the Lalafell produced a scroll from the folds in her garment unfurling it and handed the girl a quill. "Don't worry, no need to read the fine print, I'm a woman of my word and you'll get your pay." Gulping the auburn haired Elzen signed the scroll.
  2. Still Rping/Playing FFXI. I haven't been playing or Rping characters in any other game lately.
  3. Rather unoticed for some time, though quietly watching, an Elezen woman sat quietly. This was not a problem for her since she was a quiet person to begin with. She didn't particuliarly like taverns to begin with but she had to be here to meet with a tradeswoman. By gazing around the room she could tell her business associate hadn't yet arrived. She brushed her long dark hair from her curlean eyes and then sighed looking back down at the list of supplies as she shifted in her seat adjusting her bulky cloak. Just then the doors open and of all things a Roegadyn burst in and she couldn't help but follow his actions since he was quite boisterous. She observed he must be a sailor from his attire but the puzzling part was that he has two eyepatches over one eye. As she mused about this the doors opened up again and this time she noticed a rather stern looking Lafellel in Dunesfolk attire that somehow cut a rather imposing figure though though she was short by her races standards. The figure behind her almost went unoticed though being a heavily painted M'oquito as the Lafellel glared around the room cursing obviously not liking something in the room as she scanned it. The Elzen woman stood up and cleared her throat and started to wave and as it turned out it was all she needed to attract the Lafalel's hawk-like gaze. The small woman confidently strided over to the table and sat herself down before the poor Elzen could speak. The Lafallel's companion walked over to the wall and quietly leaned against it closing her eyes though the tip of her tail still twitched alertly. "By the twelve, if you had the manners of an Aldgoat you'd be sitting alrready..." the Lafallel grumbled. The elzen woman sighed and sat down. This wasn't the best way to start a business transaction.
  4. Ul'dah for Nana and probably Gridana for the kitty alt.
  5. Sorry Cast I agree with Kes. Having to search through the thread for examples made it hard for me to really piece it together. I think a redraft and vote based on the feedback with the most popular 2 options would be best.
  6. I'm with Kes and Mythis on this. I voted for 2 but I'd like to see my example added to the others as they are all valid and might come up in RP. Its best to cover all the bases.
  7. Cast, after reading the above again I have to agree with Avina. There are 2 aspects to God Mode and if one aspect is ignored in out offical definition I think that it would be short sighted. Therefore I vote for definition #1 be added to the defintion of whichever option, #2 or #3, is chosen. For the record here is how I vote ( #1 and #3 together): God-mode (verb) (hyphen optional): 1)To perform In-Character (IC), or attempt to perform IC, actions which are clearly beyond the power of any player character. 2)The tendency to roleplay someone else's character or to say their lines for them. When RPing, one should act and answer for his/herself, and not for the others they are RPing with. It can sometimes be hard, a player may have an idea of where they would like the RP to follow, however, this is the beauty of RPing. One must adapt to whatever comes, whether it was what they were expecting or not. --------------- Meet our exemplars, AbsurdlyPowerfulMan, or APM, and UnfortunateGuy, or UG. That pretty much tells you all you need to know about them. Example1: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan wiggles his pinky finger, causing a flaming crack to open under UnfortunateGuy's feet and convey him directly to a fiery death at the planet's core. (APM is clearly god-moding. There is simply no means within the game for any player character to do that under any circumstances. And what if the world doesn't actually *have* a flaming core?) ---------- Example2: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan gestures with his right thumb, causing a bolt of lightning to strike UnfortunateGuy and fry him to a crisp. (Still god mode. APM may very well be a Conjurer capable of tossing lightning bolts around, but UG might very well have survived the blast, depending upon how tough he is, or how resistant he is to lightning. Or maybe UG does, in fact, have tremendously fast reflexes that might allow him to dodge the bolt!) ---------- Example3: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan raises an eyebrow, causing everyone within ten yards to think that UnfortunateGuy has stinky feet. (Yep, godmode again. APM cannot dictate what other people think or feel. Whether or not UG's feet actually do stink is, of course, another matter entirely.) ---------- Example4: AbsurdlyPowerfulMan waggles his fingers, causing a bolt of lightning to streak forth in UnfortunateGuy's direction. (Not godmode! At least, not if APM can actually toss a Thunder spell.)
  8. I do like Rikki's post with the examples (maybe sans the stinky feet one) accept it really only addresses God Mode. I vote use Eth's defintion for God Mode with Riki's examples without the stinky feet one. My definition and example plus one of Kes's for metagame.
  9. I hope for riding and breeding chocobo mounts. I have a feeling, after reading the description of the Lalafalel Dunesfolk we might see thier beasts of burden in a mount capacity.
  10. For an introto rping post I wrote the following:
  11. Hmmm.... Interesting ideas here... So could this be taken as when you're born you are expected to worship the God of your birth or would it be based on the Patron of your city? Or would you be expected to worship both? And what if you chose a profession would you worship 3 as your main Gods? Lol. Imagine the possibilities of craziness. lol. I personally am going on the idea of the Greek patron Gods of the city states. I'm not sure the Horoscopes will have much influence on day to day unless there is a cult dedicated to the horoscope/fate ruling thier lives.
  12. Since I have to play on a laptop and I don't have some of those specs I'm not going to be able to play for a while.
  13. I like your idea Brisa because it does fit a polytheistic model where one god is seen as responsible for a certain thing. I'm thinking most likely in this world view a person would swear or devote most time to thier patron but when faced with a particuliar problem would invoke the patron god of an activity. "By the twelve" might come out when one wants to make the largest most pronounced point. You're not just invoking one god but all. lol.
  14. Well some of mine would use "Goddess" or "Altana" and one would say "By the Goddess". My favorite was an expression another player made up and most adopted though. "Bloody Chains" or "Chains" which was a shortened version of "By Promathia's Chains". I think I'm going on the Ancient Greek model and using "By the Twelve" and maybe something relating to the patron god I go with. I still feel this religious system is based off the Greek. The more I read the more I feel of it.
  15. Yay! Name: Sfant Umbra Server: Asura Contacts: Tsumi, Nesirae and Seigfried Website: http://sfantumbra.forum.st/forum.htm Info: We are taking a more "realistic" approach going light on the supernatural (ie no half-demons, possession etc) and basing things as close to lore as possible. We are an RP focused group but will help players with mission and level together out of character also. We try to keep pearl chat IC but do also do some OOC with it marked. There is an applicaton process.
  16. Nana will be Female Lalafalell Dunesfolk but I'm still unsure which city I'll go with. As for alt I'm pretty sure I'm doing a M'quote Moon Keeper.
  17. This is always a fun idea. Many of the guilds I've been in we did this as a "Yearbook" and it always was fun to see what others thought of your characters.
  18. Since my topic started this I just wanted to clarify things: 1) "Cliches" aren't the same as "archtypes" or common story elements. Campbell proved that all ancient myths, comic characters and the "Hero's Journey" are stories that resonate with all and are a great place to start. What would be cliche is if a person lifted the story of one of the those myths and just changed the names and claimed it as the background of their character. Like the copycat Naruuuto or Driizzzt which doesn't match the lore of the world in anyway which is just feels clumsy and unbelievable. However cliche is something beyond that is the "copy cat" character or idea that seems to be played the exact same way over and over and crop up all of the time. A similiar element doesn't make it a cliche if its not the exact same thing. EDIT: An example of this was the "my entire family was killed by orcs after the war had already ended and I don't know why" cliche. It wasn't so much their entire familly was killed. It wasn't so much they were killed by orcs. It was admittedly somewhat strange it was after the Crystal War ended but why was every single one of these repeated so often together in a Background? Why not have your character older, like I did with Tsumi, who actually experience the War? Why didn't they make there be a reason their family was slaughtered? Why didn't Kindred, Goblins, Yagudos or some other beastman kill them why was it always Orcs? This is why after experiencing the same thing over and over people got jaded. 2) This topic isn't meant to be nit-picky. It good to be aware of the cliches just like its good to be familiar with archtypes to give yourself ideas its good to read the backgrounds of other players in the group and see if its a cliche. If I find coincidentally my backstory is too similiar to someone elses character I'll adjust it a bit. RP is an interactive thing and if no one likes your character or finds them interesting you'll het a lot less people interested in your character and RP with you. This is the truth, it might be brutal, so its nice to know that. I've seen a lot of new rpers confused and upset that left when people didn't react the way they wanted them to when they chose the cliche. Some left discouraged so I think its only fair to forewarn the "starry-eyed" new rper that thinks that since Sepheroth is so cool everyone will love their "Seth Roth" copycat and RP with them for hours on end. When eventually they ask "why is everyone avoding me" its not fun to be honest and tell them, I've been in that position, because some are crushed and leave angry. 3) You can play a cliche well and if you do then most people will respond to you well so I don't think its an issue. I purposely have chosen "cliched" character types while making sure I spun them just different enough to make them fresh. For instance one of the worst RP cliches on Starsider was the Twilek sex slave girl turned dancer. They generally were sex-kitten types that weren't the least bit scarred by their terrible abused background. I purposely made an escaped Twilek slave girl but made her the exact opposite, she was 100% innocent of experiencing true cruelty and was never used for sex. She was a serving girl and dancer so she was treated fairly well by her masters. Also another RPer made a 100% cliched sterotype Twilek but gave her such depth, she's an amazing Rper, Tandian is one of the most popular characters in the community there. Both she and I were expereinced Rpers and knew just what we'd initially face as a skeptical community was susupicious of our "copycat". We had to work hard to overcome the intial skepticism and a new person often doesn't understand the community reaction to their cliche. Basically this is a cautionary thread not a beat down.
  19. As for pregnancies we had a few, my characters included, in the various LS I was in and we were all split as to time since time is so strangely accounted in many different ways in FFXI. If you go by game calendar then a pregnancy of 9 months would last somewhere around 4 months. Then there are the other features that run an RL year like Holidays which contradicts the ig year calculated in game mechanics. Not to mention some of these guys aren't human and it could be longer or shorter. Most decided on a shorter prenancy ig than 9 but longer than 4 months to meet a happy medium.
  20. It always surprised me how many people go into this sort of character and then are either mad or bored no one likes them. I made Tsumi like this with the goal of making her not well liked and did a little OOC dance when someone else was pissed off at her. Threatening and belitting other characters will make them not like your character just like if you acted that way in rl people would hate you. Also they need a reason to be the way they are and specific walls to really be believable. Just sitting in the corner grumbling about everything is annoying and boring. You need to walk a fine line to find good RP with this type of character showing little crack here and there for it to work and have other people's characters interested in them. I always, if there was a plot that sounded up Tsu's alley, asked OOC if I could come and never was turned down. Also, if you want the lone wolf to not always be that way create them so they can find a motivation other than "let me find the perfect girl/guy to save me from my lonliness". The fun part of the lone wolf is there was always the persistant character that could break through if they tried enough in the right way which made for some interesting character developement but you need them to get small kernels to keep them digging. I gave Tsu some very definite exploitable things that would allow people to reach differnt levels into the depth of her character. I laughed when I read this because some of my most fun moments in RPing my character Crystarella were from Rping her picking people's pockets but there always was a reason. Generally to get someone's attention or make fun of them. She'd give it back if they figured it out and if they didn't she'd tell them eventually and give it back. I've not seen the "klepto" version of thief before myself but like you said it sounds like poor motivation on background. EDIT: I almost forgot when she first started out and was just living on the streets she did actually pick a few pockets for money to eat. This also led to some interesting Rps.
  21. I've never gone deeply into some of the things I beifly did a similiar Blue Mage type thing, ie the animal bodypart and side effect thing, but it didn't go over very well, and I dropped it when we rebooted and I discovered the "new" or rather current ig Blue Mages were made by a transplanted soul. Demons etc was the biggest cliche on Asura. I rped with a few but it did get old after awhile and so Sfant Umbra has a no supernatural rule. Besides demons the other reoccuring thing we saw a lot of was immortality of a sort where people kept dieing and being resurrected. Half-breeds were actually pretty conservative since we had a rule against Half-Taru and Half-Galka in most LS we had since the Lore didn't seem to leave much room for it. As for Elvaan, Hume and Mithra we assumed that was possible but avoided most strange stuff with a simple idea... the child would appear most like the mother with some feature of two of the father excluding tails and fur which was a bit far-fetched for most of us. A good example of this is my character Armonde who is Elvaan/Hume he mostly looks Elvaan accept his ears are shorter.
  22. Freelance should be included so people know they don't have to be in a guild to join.
  23. Definition of: Freelance Rper- A Roleplayer that does not belong to a guild and rps Freely with all groups. This Roleplayer could use any style of Roleplay. It has nothing to do with how often you RP. A Freelancer could be on 24 hours a day and RP with 200 people or only get on once a week.
