I plan on having my main being on Balmung, but rolling an identical character on Gilgamesh so I can still RP when Gilgamesh people if I want to. I likely won't have it be an alternate timelines, either, just the same ol' Eorzea where some of my friends just happen to have never met :3

Hey everyone who's shell isn't showing up when you sort them by server! You will need to go in an edit your LS information under "Basic Info" and select Balmung. Some of the shells are set to "not set," as of now, since the way you select a server has changed. So just re-designate your server. I went through and did a few of the shells mentioned.

The roleplaying community! Even in a game of copy-pasta lands and houses with doors that don't open, the community built a rich world to RP in. Okay, kiddies, absolutely NO starting the Balmung v. Gilgamesh fights again! The reddit poll I believe includes many non-RPers and the communities of reddit and 4chan (and blue gartr?) have decided to make their home on Glgamesh. It is a fact, inarguable, that the majority of THIS particular website, RPers all, are going to Balmung. Many wonderful RPers are going to Gilgamesh, too, though. I tend to doubt which server you go to will make a huge difference. You're bound to make good friends and have plenty of RP on both. Just browsing the forum and seeing all the activity from both servers should be a testament to that . As for linkshells, there is a little write up about them here, but for the most part it's up to you to scroll through the linkshell hall and find one you like. Most, if not all, should have the server they're on listed on the left information panel. Most also don't require you to only have one primary shell, so why not pick out a couple? That might also help you pick a server. Oh, I beliiieve this hasn't been mentioned, but there's a Duskwight linkshell being started up on Balmung, sounds very much like the one you used to be in. They might have mentioned it in the Duskwight backstory and culture discussion here. Hopefully some of that will be helpful to you . ... Also welcome! Heheh~

It's confirmed that the races DO have their own languages, but they're more like old languages. Roegadyn still use their language for names and the lore forum has a dictionary up for it. Elezen have a sort of french based language that they haven't mentioned much about. It's mentioned that before moving to Eorzea, Miqo'te had a different language, but I think that's really all there was to that, too. I'd try picking around the naming conventions posts in the lore forums for more specifics, as I'm just going off memory. Here's a link! http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/forums/491-Lore I'd say it's possible for someone to have grown up mostly alone, especially in the twelveswood, though maybe not without ANY human contact. I think an adapted concept like the one you mentioned would be totally possible as long as you're cool with people thinking of your character as a wild, possibly crazy man. But that might be the point, no? : P

I wouldn't worry too much about anyone having too many mentees (: P) either. If they feel they do, they'll let you know, if not, you've got yourself a mentor!

Hiii! There are a buuuunch of shells to choose from, many of which would probably be more than willing to help out a fresh player. From my experience I do happen to know Corvus Cinis is super welcoming to completely new people. You might also find this lore post useful in your journey of FFXIVness and maybe this how-to post as well for things like linkshells (guilds) and the wiki (where we keep our character profiles and some other good lore bits)! I used to constantly have this argument back i the day with a friend of mine. He claimed that Eorzea MUST be stereotypically misogynistic because of the dark ages feel he got from the game. My argument was always "Then why are ALL the city-states' leaders women?" He never had an answer for that one : P.
