A'rklonn is a romantic at heart. The thing about romances is they take a *lot* of your time. I generally don't play a lot of romances on anyone but my main as well since..he's really the one I play most. So it's hard for me to do any kind of romance on alts since it would kind of be unfair to the other player unless it was also one of their not often played alts. That said. I like all kinds of romance. From love at first sight, or lust-that-turns-to-love, to friends that become lovers, and so on. There are different degrees of passion, exploration, and warmth involved with all of them and while I'm a cynical, pessimistic asshole a lot of the time, I've got a romantic still left in me somewhere. Trapped in a cage asking for bread and water most likely, but it's still there.

Yeah. Makes me wonder what Unholy actually is; if it's white magic reverse engineered, or some kind of proto-succor with dark magic infused into it. The questions I wish they'd answer on the spells some of these bosses use. >>

Welcome to the madhouse. I'll be your friendly neighborhood psychopath. In all seriousness though, no matter what your style, you'll find something on Balmung. I enjoy all styles as well as to me, RP is RP, and whether combat, erotic, or any other style, while I do have my preferences, I'm open to everything depending on the character's personality. Just like anywhere, people can get a little touchy over things sometimes because humans are odd creatures, and every household and culture has its various shades of things that tweak them, and people have their personal biases and opinions. But if you're an old hat at this sort of thing, then that's something you already know. My advice is don't get discouraged, play what you want, and make the friends you can, and keep them near. :3 There are indeed guilds who deal with escorts and adult entertainment here and there, and they actually do take it quite seriously, but as stated they tend to have closed ranks, so you'd have to get to know one of the members likely. Anyway, best of luck in your endeavors and happy roleplaying. :3

I know this is an instance of Game mechanics vs Lore and all, but an interesting thing to note is that we see Allagans using both Black and White magic in their boss battles. Admittedly one can say 'well, why make new spells when you can just recycle old ones', right? The thing is, they use differing variants. It's highly likely if you interpret it to any degree that the Allagans may very well have had their own proto-versions of Black and White magic, and the soulstones to manipulate them. They did create Summmoning, after all..which is connected in some ways to the more modern Arcanima. In this instance, it might be possible to stumble on relics or a stone connected to an empire that far predates Amdapor and piece together a sort of proto-succor of your own..of course with the risks that come with it. And even mold it into something resembling modern succor as time goes on. Scylla for example uses..was it Dark Holy or Unholy? Can't recall the proper name. And several bosses use 'Ancient Flare'. Some even use earth-based spells that currently no class even has (Xande's Quaga, and Ancient Quaga for example). Admittedly there's no ironclad Lore law that says Allag developed Black/White magic, but magic and its practices, like anything, is passed down, forgotten, and rediscovered under different names later as time goes on. In a way like myths. So it's very well within the rules of magic that Allag may have made the ancestor of those magicks, an older form, which could be used to piece together a more modern form through study. Just a possible avenue.

The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales
Paradox replied to Gegenji's topic in FFXIV Discussion
When someone else pulls, I will heal them anyway for one reason. If the dps dies, I have to rez them. Rezzing takes more MP than a few heals for a stupid person. Plus it means I'm not healing the poor tank who's trying to grab everything the idiot pulled. And usually, a tank can pull aggro back off. I'm also a healer than when I do pull Aggro, I RUN TO THE TANK. Then I stand there and trust my tank. It's not that hard. I wish more healers knew how to do this. But I can't sit there and let the idiots die, because then we might wipe because I was vindictive towards their stupidity and then it really will be my fault. I prefer to continue to do my job even if others can't. That way I know I did well, you know? Unless it's a ninja. Oh man, I love seeing those little fuckers die because they think they're AGI tanks and go on a pulling run. Heh heh. But no, I get they should learn not to be stupid, but I'd rather not have to sit in queue waiting for another tank for 20 minutes, or have to requeue, which sadly is usually what happens if you let people wipe for being dumb. Plus on top of that, I don't want to punish my whole group if there's only one idiot. Now, in a raid, I have no compunctions about letting single idiots die. But in 4 mans I just try to keep my cool about it, you know? If the whole group is being stupid though, that's when I put on my sunglasses at night and just be like. "Nope, I'm out." -
The Vent Tent - Poor PuGs and Other Terrible Tales

My beef, as someone who also heals, is with healers who think prioritizing dps over healing makes any sense. Especially in Alex or Void Ark. You rolled a healer, motherfucker. If you want to sit and do nothing but dps, then roll a black mage like the rest of us. I know you want to be out of the dungeon fast so you can go back to doing..whatever it is you do when you're not fucking up being a healer. Healers helping dps is fine. Even I flip stances sometimes now even though it was anathema to me for the longest time (mostly because my machine is old *and* my net is shit, and shit happens before it responds half the time). But. When you're running Void Ark like the one I was in last week, and the WHM is in cleric stance for every fight, and won't even drop out of it to heal, and doesn't even rez when people die. Nope, gotta get those big dps numbers! Then I seriously question if the person knew they were rolling a healing class. A whm or scholar doesn't need to be in perma-dps for 4 man dungeons either. They end so fast, it really doesn't matter. Well, unless it's Neverreap, but fuck that dungeon. It also doesn't help when groups refuse to stand within healing range. Cuchulainn fight is a huge offender for this. Even when people put down group indicators of where your group needs to roughly be, they run to the other side and we can't heal them. Then they bitch when they die, wondering why we weren't healing. Because you were FIFTY FUCKING YALMS AWAY, YOU DEGENERATE. Running through the pools of poison to heal a few guys that just had to run to the other side of the room for some reason is not acceptable, because then the healers have a higher chance of biting it. Then EVERYONE suffers. It goes like this, honestly. -
snz2W5kaDog I really wish they'd put out the instrumental version of this, though. >>

I kind of expected aliens with dreadlocks and cloaking technology that hunt people and take trophies of their kills. I was pleasantly surprised with the subject matter though. Maybe because I liked Silence of the Lambs way too much.

A good ritualistic cannibal will stand firm in his belief that what he does is right. A great ritualistic cannibal will convince someone telling him it's wrong to try the priest. ;D But honestly in a warlike hunter group like some of the Au Ra tribes, I don't see why this kind of thing wouldn't happen. In the one tribe especially the Dotharl, I think they're called? They're warlike destroyers, and if they fight a really worthy opponent, I can certainly see a more extreme one developing an idea if they eat parts of their enemy that they'll gain their strength. There's also the 'waste not, want not' idea as well. A lot of the refugee tribes have no food at times, and with people dying or accosting them for being dirty foreigners here and there, eating someone they kill is not only a viable resource, but a means of 'hiding the body', so go for it.

So your character is a new mount? Do we get to ride you, then? >> This. In this instance one is unique, eight is silly, even by my liking. At juncture we also have no idea if crossbreeds are sterile, as there's been no official lore post on it, so it's entirely possible you could even have something in your back line. Or maybe you don't even play a crossbreed. Maybe your character has blood of something else in their ancestry and instead of being born a halfblood, they're born from two of the same race parents but show traits of an ancestor; an atavism. Maybe it's small, like the Miqo'te eyes, or if a Lala, maybe they're a little taller than they should be. Maybe your Midlander has a slightly flatter face form Roe somewhere in the family line. My Lalafell has some Hyuran blood way back in his line, and because of that he's a few inches taller than the max Lalafell height from that particular genetic trait. (He's 3'5"). Little things like that add something unique as well. For now, we can assume they are or are not sterile because we have no idea. We only have 'real world' examples to go off of, and a lot of people forget. It's not the real world. Normal humans can harness Aether to do all sorts of Shonen anime things, Marauder training has you cutting a boulder in half with an axe, and so on. We can't always apply our real world logic to a fantasy world. Also, it's clear they aren't truly different species in most cases. Miqo'te are just hyur with cat ears who evolved that way, as I recall, so in a sense it's similar to Star Wars 'near human' races who can crossbreed, though rarely in a lot of cases. So just go with your ideas, and like Faye says. If they don't like it, it's their choice to not acknowledge it. There are people who will, and what makes an RP community great is its diversity.

A bit off topic, but we really, really need more Garlean lore. Hopefully if/when we go into Othard, we'll get more on how Garlean society actually works. As for the Gladiator thing. As far as I know, there are prisoners that are Gladiators, so I assume there are slave gladiators as well. Some do it for sport and fame, some do it because they have no choice. It shouldn't be too hard to make it fit!

To my distinct knowledge, this is indeed possible, though I'd think that there would be standard complications based on biology. A Roegadyn child growing in a smaller race would likely lead to complications provided that Roe children are larger themselves. I'm not sure exactly, as we're not privy to that information. I would assume a Lalafell is incapable of carrying anything but a Lalafell child, though a Midlander might be possible, but don't quote me on that. Still wrapping my head around just how that would work. Au Ra may seem reptilian, but if they're anything like Miqo'te, who are basically just humans with cat ears and tails who evolved into such a form, it's likely they can crossbreed as well. As far as I'm aware they give live birth, though I have no natural comprehension of what a crossbreed would look like or what traits it would have. The thing there is, those are the NPCs we can see that are static in one place. And as large as the continents are, the NPCs we have are only a tiny fraction of the population proportions of the world. I understand that this is mostly due to space and programming constraints, mind. Too many NPCs in one place would be a mess, but I always assume that there are a lot more people walking around in capital cities than we can visibly see, because well. Capital cities are huge. I would also think it would be a little more common around Ul'dah or Limsa with its mercenary and pirate culture, and a lot more rare in say, Ishgard with clearly divided class lines and rules regarding marriage and relationships. But those are hypotheticals. Bit of a generalization of reasoning there. Sometimes people just want to play something different to see where it goes, if even for its own sake, though unfortunately they're met with a similar intolerance. I see nothing wrong with playing such a thing whether it affects specifically character or not. Let's be honest. Interracial children happen in the real world too, though in our case it's more of a skin color/features situation as opposed to things like horns, ears, tails and the like. And while depending on the community it can and does affect some of those children of mixed heritage, others are never bothered by it, or for it, and they just are who they are. Myself for example, I look for the most part, white. But I have more Native American blood than I do caucasian, but the Irish in my background won out. I would assume that similar situations crop up with crossbreeds as well. Maybe the features of one parent are so muted as to barely be there. Who knows. That's what Roleplay is for. And let's also be honest; in a world of adventurers, barmaids, pirates, drunkards, ne'er-do-wells and so on, sometimes drunken trysts or one night stands happen. And sometimes things come out of those incidents. Just because someone wants to play a mixed character doesn't mean they're doing it for attention. Sometimes they're just doing it to be different, and unfortunately for a great deal of community, these things often get confused. I'll admit yes, it will likely be rare. But I'd rather not be the person that says 'you just want to be a special snowflake' just because they want to do something someone else hasn't or isn't widely done. If someone wants to play a crossbreed, give them a chance before you stamp them with 'bad'. Well, there is some racial tension (Duskwights and Wildwoods), and I would imagine some interracial couples would certainly be an oddity to some races. The only active racial discrimination I've seen in regards to halfbreeds or the like is in Ishgard. But you know how those Ishgardians are. I would urge the opposite. If someone is inspired by such a concept for their character, I think it would be exclusionary to urge roleplayers to not do something. Telling a roleplayer not to do something is not a way to breed creativity and diversity in roleplay. Just because other people are scared of certain possibilities and concepts doesn't mean they're inherently bad. Just that some people think they are, and they transfer their bad experiences onto others by trying to prevent them from enjoying their experience. If the lore supports it at all, then it is possible. I urge the roleplayer who wants to do it to question why, yes, but not to not do it at all. 73.6% of all statistics are made up.

A'rklonn is always as equally respectful and friendly to Lalafell as he is to anyone else. As far as he's concerned, they're the same as anyone, just smaller individuals in stature; but since it's been shown at times they can be as physically and of course, magically strong as any other adventurer, he doesn't underestimate them. If someone's childlike, he'll pet them on the head, whether they're lalafell, or hyur, or anyone else. If they're mature, he'll treat them mature. So if you wander across A'rk, feel free to RP at him.

My KOTOR 1 feels. All of them. I always picked that alias when I fought in the duel arenas. On topic though, a nameplate is basically a way for people to friend you and invite you to parties. While it can be your legitimate character name, it doesn't have to be and if someone wants to bitch when it isn't, it's their right to bitch, sure, but it's not their right to metagame their reactions with OOC knowledge by acting one way then acting another or the like because your alias doesn't match your name or vice versa. My final diagnosis and remedy on the one who caused a stir over another person's alias/nameplate choice: Severe case of butthurt with a mild case of metagaming. I'm perscribing a bottle of 30 days of fuck 'em. /illegible doctor's signature.

A'rklonn's name is like that. He's a character I move from game to game, and I do change the lore behind him to match games I'm in at times, but I always keep his name. This version of him, his actual real name is shrouded by him in the belief that names give power. As a magus, this is a pretty common thing. Not only that, his family name, Sargonnai, is a corruption of his *actual* Ishgardian born name. He changed it when he removed himself from his family and claimed the name for himself, by altering it. His first name on his nameplate is just one I've always used for him, but he has a real first name that's lore-compliant that's nothing like it, so it basically is an alias. And that's how he introduces himself. I think there's maybe three or four people in game that know his real last name, and only his wife knows his real first name. If people get upset that your nameplate isn't your character's real name, ask them why it matters since it's not like their character would know anyway. As long as it's not like. zzCloudxStrifezz or something like that, I don't see what their problem would be.

So basically people aren't allowed to decorate their characters scantily clad regardless of their reasons, or they're bad if they do it if they're not in your circle. Gotcha. If it was in Coerthas maybe, but Thanalan be hot. Fite me bro, lololol. Nice broad assumption. 'unnecessarily' is an opinion. And some people play more harsh characters. And maybe they have good reason to. But hey, why not judge them without knowing their reasons? That's cool. Just as an aside, there have been plenty in literature and published works who were harsh or hostile but grew into more. I'm noticing poor past experience seems to be a bad baseline excuse to refuse to RP with people these days. But hey, I guess all our hostile characters are just projecting amirite? So basically you're saying the person you trust can't develop a grudge and shit talk someone, or lie, that they're Mary Poppins and have never been dishonest in their life about someone that rustled their jimmies, and in your follower mentality, you'd believe everything they say without getting the other person's side of the story. Good to know. I mean, since we're assuming here. You basically lost it all with me here when you included bullying as being in place 'for a reason'. I'm sorry, no. Humans form cliques naturally, yes. Stay in your groups, good on you. However, there is never a reason to bully someone, and the moment you said that, you basically acknowledged that it's just fine to make someone feel like shit if you don't like what they're doing or because you're bigger than they are, or you're someone who uses your backup to win fights you can't win yourself. If you think the Social Darwinism mentality of our preteen to teen years is a baseline by which to live our adult lives, including our RP and how we judge others and their RP, well. I honestly have nothing more to say. There's no words. Bad past experiences have been on my plate for many years, but I keep trucking. What you're talking about isn't cynicism, it's borderline RP xenophobia. But hey, it's your right, so I'll keep an open mind about that. I do feel bad that your past experiences have been so bad you think bullying and following the crowd and hearing only one half of something, as well as generalizing based on character appearance and attitude about the person behind it is the acceptable norm and that you subscribe to it. But hey. /sips tea/ But that's none of my business.
-
And that's not what I'm seeing in the argument. What I'm seeing is that it's fine to Rp with what you like and feel comfortable with, but don't necessarily judge or be harsh against the players of the characters because they have an idea or style you may or may not like. 'Well they're playing this, so they must be x kind of roleplayer' or 'well this is obviously not 100% in line with what the community says is right, so therefore they're bad'. There are those who see someone playing something they don't like in a character or story, and it's fine not to play with them if that is your choice. However, there are others who are unnecessarily judgmental of that player *as* a roleplayer because they may play controversial things or things a group of people may not agree with, that is carried over against that player even when they have a character of a different sort or type. Stigma from close-mindedness of an idea can hang on to a player if another player or small clique of well known players expresses negativity against their idea, even in their other characters because a few people are so rigidly against something, then refer to them as 'bad roleplayers' or 'snowflakes' or some other derogatory label. The ideal of keeping an open mind is that just because someone is playing something you may not agree with, it doesn't mean they're bad, or even that their idea is bad, and it shouldn't be treated as such nor should they or their character concept be rejected outright just because one group of outspoken judgmental individuals says so.
-
There's nothing wrong with that. But a lot of the time on these very forums, I see constructive criticism turn into snarking, sniping, and being very harsh as opposed to constructive. There's a lot of threads on this forum I've observed where people come in name-calling (again, the whole 'edgy', 'snowflake', etc) just because that person doesn't like the idea, and instead of being constructive, they're douchey. Jokingly making fun of each other's stuff among people you hang with is different from bashing people's ideas because you don't like them. Keep in mind I'm using 'you' as a general statement here, I'm not actually directing that at you personally. But I do see it a lot on the forums here especially. I know people get tired of addressing the same topics, and that's part of it, but still. I adjust to most things, myself. It might be because I'm old, and I've been at this for so long, I just like to see what people will do. Not having a life also means I have a little more time to waste, overall. Maybe it's that. I dunno. But yeah, words are hard. I think words should be outlawed. We could communicate by waving fish around. That might be fun. Especially since a lot of topics around here tend to flounder anyway. >>

This world needs more Femroe, and hugs from them. I endorse this a hundred percent. As for finding RP, or finding it difficult to fit in, I agree, it can be. I have a bevy of characters from all different walks who have approached all different types and been blown off. Not even IC, as in it'd be nice even if someone said 'hey, butt out/go somewhere else' or something in character, but just ignored. One thing about open world RP is examine people and see if they have 'walks ups' in their description. Those are good places to start. If you see me in the world on A'rklonn, feel free to walk up and say something. Or do something. Maybe he looks like someone with a bounty on them. Maybe he looks rich, and you want to bum some gil. Maybe you think he's the guy that slept with your wife or your sister. (Hell, he might be, he's kind of a womanizer). Or maybe you just like his shirt and want to tell him. I try to acknowledge anyone that comes up to me unless I'm super busy or afk. As for joining an FC, I recommend joining one to meet more people, but don't consider an FC as the be-all end-all. A lot of FCs kind of stick to themselves and don't do much in the outside world, so I recommend finding one that hosts open events open to other players and other FCs on a continual basis than one that is fully self contained, as this will find you more people to network with. Just my two gil.

This is an odd statement for me because with me it's only partially true. I honestly don't RP with people who meet my asshole bias. What decides mostly who I don't RP with is their player and their behavior towards others more than their characters. If I know someone's an asshole, tends to shit talk about people, fuck people over, don't play reindeer games with them because they're snobbish, cliquish, etc. I don't really want to roleplay with them. No matter how lore compliant or cool their characters are or how many people say they're awesome. The only bias I have against actual characters or character ideas are ones that are made to make fun of minorities, groups, or sexualities specifically. So I suppose in a sense this statement is true for me, but it kind of errs into common sense territory in that regard. But I'm also quite open minded otherwise. I've gotten into RP with ERP-centric/focused characters before, and turned it via conversation and interaction into normal everyday RP, because even if someone's specifically looking for one thing, it doesn't mean they eschew the other, if you can turn it in that direction. Through effort and attention, a lot can be done. News on that at eleven. But, that brings me to my view. The problem is, in this community I've noticed, a lot of simply judging or being personally biased turns into shaming, mocking, and shit-talking. It's one thing to say that something isn't up to your standards, but it seems to be that a lot of people want to roleplay police and use 'the community standard' as their Captain America shield. I've seen a lot of threads asking about something, and while it starts as constructive discussion, certain individuals tend to come in and just bash the unholy hell out of someone's concept or idea and state why they're wrong as fact rather than opinion, then shut down any arguments or facts to the contrary and sit on their soapbox, calling them selfish, or lazy, or other such things. That's more than a standard, that's being intolerant. The amount of close-mindedness generally has nothing to do with actual standards, and everything to do with heavy biases or past experiences that went sour. These things are different. For example. Someone may be playing a world-hopper. (This seems to be a hot topic.) Instead of interacting with this person IC and thus, IC deciding that maybe this person is crazy, which is very viable, they instead decide to never RP with this person, who outside of the character idea they may not like otherwise may very well be an excellent roleplayer. But the moment someone hits another person's bias meter, they never want to RP with that person, even if they run into another character of theirs that may be entirely lore compliant. The thing about having standards is that standards aren't always able to be met by everyone, and when people tend to bunch into groups, as people are wont to do, it cuts people out that otherwise would be fun to play with. Standards often also tend to create tension as much as doing any weeding out, especially I've noticed, with people that hug lore like a bible, despite the fact the lore has a lot of holes and inconsistencies at times. That, and this community has some of the worst standards of character idea tolerance I've come across in my 20+ years of roleplay. Don't get me wrong; I have seen worse, but this is in the top 10 by far. If I had a dollar for every instance of the words 'edgy' or 'special snowflake' uttered casually by people in a snide fashion at some just asking for opinions, I'd be sitting on Trump money. There are some accepting people. I've met some. But I also see a lot of judgment. And I don't mean casual judgment based on standards, or 'I don't agree with this idea, but best of luck'. I mean snobbery, mockery, and disdain before they ever get a chance to interact with someone more than once or twice. I agree with OP to some extent. It is good to be open minded and not be judgmental. And I disagree to some point; we are allowed to have our own standards because we do want to have fun and not have our time wasted. But I also know some people will sit in their own corners, play in their sandboxes, and pull a George Lucas and kick all the toys out they don't like and say 'my sandbox'. And that makes me a little sad. I think we should all be a little more accepting and open, or at the very least, not be complete douche canoes about it when we don't like something. Giving someone a chance may indeed waste your time. But you might also be pleasantly surprised. You never know. Just my two gil.

Lore question: Soul captured in weapon?
Paradox replied to Altitis Acquired's topic in RP Discussion
The thing is, Voidsent are not entirely solid entities. They can become energy and travel as such, as we've seen through the Thaumaturge quest with Mormo. Voidsent can be contained, and sealed in objects. Mormo's urn for example. There are others but I don't want to spoil higher level quests for anyone storywise. Voidsent , to my knowledge, are not creatures that use normal Aether. Their physical structure and composition is malleable, lending their ability to be trapped, sealed, or perform possessions. So I wouldn't see why one couldn't trap them via the proper seals or containers on a weapon or object. They are technically living beings, but being alive doesn't prevent them from changing their state of mass, and they've demonstrated doing such on multiple occasions. It's not difficult to believe with the proper summoning and binding rituals that a voidsent couldn't be forced into such a state and contained in something else. -

Thanks Oli. Now I have to go play mass effect again. Swiving whoreson. >> In all seriousness though, man's penchant for profanity has been around for a long long time, and I kind of look forward to seeing just what kind of words get invented as time goes on. I want to be that old guy who says 'well back in my day, we used to call it fucking. You kids and your newfangled slang.' Back on-topic though, the use of certain words being discounted from the game is indeed likely because of the teen rating. I think only Spaceballs got away with that once with Dark Helmet's 'Fuck! Even in the future nothing works!'. Then again, Mel Brooks has always been good at sneaking things out the back door. They use the more archaic words for things like fuck because they actually can. A lot of people are lazy. They won't bother to look up what a lot of the words mean, and more old curses can slide by since they're not under whatever censorship bureau's 'words you absolutely can't say on TV' ratings list. It's just easier to slip them in that way and at the same time give them setting-context. Doesn't mean the other words don't exist. Just means they can't put them in the actual dialogue. -
Lore question: Soul captured in weapon?
Paradox replied to Altitis Acquired's topic in RP Discussion
I think it'd also depend on how powerful the voidsent is. For example, a low class voidsent like revenants can possess dead bodies. There's a leve that covers this; they possess the corpses of birds, and it is a form of necromancy. So for a weapon to have a lesser voidsent chained to it, perhaps if it was summoned during the forging/building process and bound to it at the same process, perhaps to give it an elemental power boost that wouldn't run out, like crystals are wont to do, seems perfectly fine. Keep in mind the weapon would likely have to be kept in very good repair lest it crack and let the voidsent out. A more powerful voidsent would require a weapon patterned or forged with special materials, perhaps runes and sealings, and the like, to give it a more powerful effect. It would take a lot of preparation, to be sure. Such a weapon would likely give off an aura that would make people uneasy if they were aether-sensitive. And the presence of the voidsent might 'leak' out of the weapon and even if it couldn't fully corrupt someone, it might make suggestions, push them towards negativity, or have a bloodlust that makes it so you can't put the weapon away unless it sheds blood. And so forth. For every major boon, there's usually a downfall, and for minor boons, just usually a cautionary method to keep. A weapon with a strong voidsent in it might also have a story or legend attached to it, which might help with plot-based Rp as well. -

Oli's grasp of languages surpasses mine, both due to his study on it most likely (My study of languages is only cursory at best, I'm more of a prehistoric history and mythology guy), and because my failing memory has let a lot of details slip through my fingers. So my hat's off to him in that regard. But there's something here that has a greater point in it all. A lot of us aren't language majors, or history majors. We don't know a lot of the Olde English terms or words, and the game itself leans towards a lot of that. Sure, we could do the research and try our best to adapt it. And for those of us used to writing in more modern terms, having to remember to write in terms or words specific to a setting can often be difficult on a 24/7 basis. I don't write characters with accents much because having to forget my g or h on something like 'hanging' to write it 'hangin' or 'angin' is hard because..well. I'm a spelling whore, and I spell without thinking, using the proper spelling of the word, and often slip up on accented speech because of it. The same can be said of words from the setting. Sometimes we just forget to use them because they don't come immediately to mind, and only a few in the community use them. Hell, I still have problems substituting 'anyroad' for 'anyway' or 'anywho' because only a smattering of people do it that I've observed. On the greater topic, to me, the usage of words like 'Fuck' isn't immersion-breaking because it's a word that I, in my modern language immersion, can recognize and adapt to immediately, making a response easier to formulate. Is it out of place in Eorzea? We don't know. As it was said, we haven't a comprehensive Eorzean dictionary or thesaurus in either common terms or slang. Hell, we have a dragon dictionary more comprehensive than an Eorzean one. We have 'shite', which is exactly what it says on the tin. That one's not hard to figure out, and easier to deal with. Just add an 'e'. Honestly the way I see it, just use what you're comfortable with in your own language but keep context in mind. I'd say not to avoid curses as they're known in modern sense, but their usage in context. We naturally don't have phrases in Eorzea like 'get your shit together', as to my knowledge that's way more modern and would make a lot less sense in context. But calling someone a shit-head or a shite-head is just peachy the way I see it. Usage and structure is really more important than what words you use (well, in my view anyway), at least until we get a proper Eorzean language primer. But that's just how I feel. I don't nitpick about people's language usage, even if it seems a little too modern. I'm more interested in fun RP, and nitpicking over a few words kind of interrupts my immersion way more than words themselves would. But to each their own~. As far as the word cunt goes, it is exceptionally old, and I think it has its merit as a descriptive, more lewd 'sailor swearin' term for lady-bits in the RP sense rather than the insult it's used as today. Again, context. Since Eorzea as we see it is more Olde English, go with that and see what you can find. And hey, there are a LOT of descriptors not only for both sets of genitalia used throughout history, but other things as well. Terms and slang were a lot different back then. So if you think something sounds more Eorzean, do the research, find some terms, and then have a party. Sidenote: Still waiting to see someone reach into the Dragon Age box and utter 'Menphina's Knickerweasels!'. Just sayin. Edit: People posted before I was finished aaaah. D: So reply pre-dates the whole 'swiv' thing. Reminds me so much of swimming.
