1. Seldi in regards to most combat situations:
2. I love it when I log on to an RP server in a game for the first time, and immediately see RPers.
3. WOOT! ^0^ I've made it to Balmung.
4. Seldi has just returned to Eorzea.
5. Hey! Welcome back. I'm just now returning too, and facing the problem of getting on Balmung. I figured in addition to welcoming you, I'd ask a question: What did you have to do to transfer a character to Balmung? Was it as simple as "Transfer x character to Balmung"? or did you have to wait for the server pop to drop a bit?
6. Ah yes, I stumbled across that last night shortly before heading to bed. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, regardless. Due to last night's shenanigans, I can't attempt to transfer my main to Balmung until Saturday, so I'll be looking around Siren in the meantime. I did bump into someone in an RP guild last night (also right before logging off), so I've got hope!
7. I tend to disconnect gameplay capability from RP capability for a few reasons: 1.) I've met some pretty awesome storytellers that are kinda shit at the game they're RPing in, due to lack of time or skill. 2.) For people who aren't bad at the game and have the time, getting to max level is pretty easy, leading to swarms of supermen characters. 3.) Some people (like me) actually prefer to play underpowered characters, whose abilities are going to be far lower than what the gameplay suggests. 4.) If you're playing a one-shot villain for a story, you probably don't want to invest the time required to level them. 5.) People will use gameplay to make story developments trivial. Example: Why didn't they use a phoenix down on Aeris? There's more, I think, but my brain is failing me, and I have to leave for work soon. Now, I do like some rules when it comes to combat RP. I just think those rules should be separated from the game play due to the above-mentioned things. Unfortunately, coming up with a set of rules everyone will agree on and use can be a bit of a challenge. And that's my 2 gil.
8. If it makes you feel any better, the RP community I just came from (for a different game), has some pretty massive issues, and basically the same things you just mentioned. The community I was poking around before that was much the same, and so-on and so-forth. I'm starting to suspect it's the price of admission for MMO RP, to such a degree that I was about to start taking bets on how long it was before I saw a thread like this. (19 hrs, 56 min)
9. Giving this a bump. I just returned to the game, and I'm currently "stranded" on Siren. I thought I'd look around for some RPers. So far my google-fu has not helped me. Near as I can tell there IS an RP Linkshell hanging around, but I haven't managed to get in touch with the people supposedly running it yet.
10. Gotcha, will nag with lore questions. You've made an terrible mistake. :tonberry:
11. Ah, good to know. Ugh. Looking over things, I might have to start from scratch. I've been gone so long, I don't remember a damned thing any more. Anyone got a lore primer handy?
12. Alas, I'm at work. I won't be home for another 5 hours at least. Sad times.
13. Bah. I guess we'll see. Haha! Well, I have to defend the people bringing in OoU character, somewhat. I did that when I was new to MMORP, and largely used it to explained why I didn't know much about the lore. However, it wasn't long before someone pointed out that I was sort of doing myself a disservice with that method by sort of ignoring the world and it's lore. I tend to agree. Now-a-days I just have characters that are largely ignorant of their own history (Learning the lore along with my character is rather enjoyable, I've found)
14. Thanks for your reply. Hmm. How bad is the over population on those other servers? Would I be stuck in a queue for a while, or does it simply not allow new people in? As for lore adherence, I do believe one should roleplay as a part of the world they've chosen to roleplay in, but I've seen a variety of ways to interpret how one violates the lore. For instance: Some people believe that if it's not explicitly stated to exist, then it doesn't. Others are the opposite route, where if it's not explicitly stated to not exist, then it can. Still others tend to be somewhere in the middle, and will allow for anything that seems to adhere to the "flavor" of the lore. (Hey Marceline, why are you so mean?)
15. I'm considering returning to FF14, but I thought I'd do a bit of a research first. I know I wasn't on an RP server the first time around, and so I'd like to move/reroll on one. Before I do that, though, I have to find one, and make sure I'll fit. So far, here's what I've determined: - There are three Unofficial RP Servers: Balamaug, Gilgamesh, and Siren - Balamaug and Giglamesh are pretty full and hard to get on. - I don't know a darned thing about Siren - That's about it. Any information/corrections about these servers and their communities would appreciated. In particular, I'm looking for things like: - Intraguild organization, if any - How rigidly or inflexibly the community adheres to lore - Anything you find appealing or unappealing about the community in question (I'm open to recieving PMs on this last part) Thanks in advance.
16. Hmm. Would it be possible to have your character's histories start a year before the game supposedly does? I haven't quite read up on the lore (been playing Fallout: NV), so I don't know how feasible that is.
17. Alpha testing is necessarily exclusive, and turn around time for decisions on who gets in can take a while. Remember: It's not a club you're joining. The developers need to pick out people that they (a) think will be able to adequately test the system and (b) aren't going to go blabbing about what they see. To be quite honest, I'm surprised there's a public alpha invitation. They're usually done in-house, and with people the company trusts. Just relax and be patient, but, again, expect not to get anything at all.
18. It's not on a first-come-first-serve basis. I haven't applied yet (I'm not at home) so I don't know what information you're sending them, but if you send system specs, they're probably basing their decisions on that. If not, then I don't know what to tell you. Be patient, and expect that you might not get picked.
19. Enjoy your Birthday! Or hope you enjoyed it. Not really paying attention to the date here.
20. Wow, you guys must have been really, really active RPers. I can't recall a single RP instance where minutes worth of RP didn't take an hour of real world time. That said, I would go ahead and condense it. Regarding In-Game Holidays: I tend to ignore them as meta anyways (my character will participate and react, generally speaking, but I tend t leave it out of their bios). Of course, since I haven't RPed in FF14 yet, you're welcome to ignore my opinion.
21. Woot for the US Army. I was in Air Defense myself, stationed at Ft. Bliss. But that was a few years ago. I'm more-or-less in the same boat. Came from GW2, TC. Looking forward to giving this game a shot, when it gets here. So settle in, grab a Snickers! It's going to be a long wait, thought I'm sure the whole, "hurry up and wait" thing is no foriegn concept to you.
22. Thanks for the welcome!... ...and the link. I'll take a look at it later.
