Okay, thought it over. ICly, Seldi IS a courier, and also does odd jobs within her capability. She doesn't ask too many questions beyond, "How much are you paying?" So, really, they key difference between Seldi and the WoL would be that Seldi would be getting PAID. "Being called a hero means less to me than the sound of Gil falling in my hand." She wouldn't knowingly become a traitor to her homeland (she has a bit more honor than that) and would instinctively try to save someone she came across in peril (she may also try to save someone who's done ill, like Edda). But volunteer to take down a primal? Go toe-to-toe with the Empire? We're going to have to see that Gil upfront. In short, it's doubtful too many people would be calling her a hero, and doubtful she would have become one.
-
Seldi's flaws? - Because of her isolated upbringing, she has poor social skills and an almost non-existent awareness of cultural norms. She means well, but trying to get that across is difficult, and she'll find herself apologizing a lot around sensitive souls. - She's deaf in her right ear. She was born this way, preventing healing magic from restoring her hearing. - She has good night vision, like most Keepers, but take away something to shield her eyes (Like her hat), and she's practically blind in direct sunlight.

Hmm. Well, true names are usually a demon thing, and this is Final Fantasy, so I'm going to guess Calcabrina. Oh, that's not what you meant. "Strastrabi Strabi" seems good.

Duskwight customs officer at Limsa looking for acquaintances
Sigil.9054 replied to Fortes's topic in Chronicled Connections
Ugh! Those hours, though! My character is a courier, and would likely have a lot of business with a customs officer. But our time frames don't match. All the same, I'll take note. My character is "Seldi Witt", and feel free to poke me if you see me. -
Well, Seldi lives in La Noscea, and frequents Limsa. She hates the desert, and thus avoids Ul'dah unless she has work taking her there. I came up with this well before I knew that Ul'dah was RP central. So if you're on Balmung, OP, feel free to look Seldi Witt up.

I suppose I'm to thank you for reminding me that it's my character, and I can do as I please. But since I'm posting a thread requesting the input of my fellow roleplayers, one should infer that I at least marginally care about what they have to say on the matter. The manner in which I choose to play my character takes into consideration the ideas of the community in which I choose to include myself.
-
Thank you for your responses thus far! So far it's looking like Thaumaturge and Arcanist would be the most appropriate paths for my character, given her personality. I'll also happily roleplay her taking weeks to learn the basics. ^^

So, out of context, these are my questions: - What are the factors in learning magic? - Does it require study? - Does it require a sort of "attunement" with the magic of the world? - What kind of components are involved? IE, Vocal, Somatic, Material, Focus, etc. - Does magic draw energy of some kind from the user? - Does it vary depending on the kind of magic? If yes, how so? More contextually... My character is currently an archer, and I eventually plan to have them start studying magic (what kind will depend on roleplay). She's very intelligent, and learns things quick. What other obstacles would she have to deal with, and how long would it take for her to learn how to, say, heal a wound or toss a fireball? ---------------------------------------------------- I noted someone else had a question further on in the thread:

What does your character find unattractive in others?
Sigil.9054 replied to Blue's topic in Character Workshop
In terms of just-plain friendliness, Seldi gives most people a chance, even going as far as to try to be friendly with those she finds unpleasant. In terms of romance, however, those with the following traits need not apply. Physical: - Non-Miqo'te - Smelly - Diseased or otherwise obviously unhealthy Mental: - Hair-Trigger Tempers - Holier-Than-Thou Attitudes - Greedy/Gluttonous (to the point of consuming/hoarding resources needed by others) - Lazy to the point of harming others - Disrespectfully flirtatious Really, I don't think she's unusual in that. -
I don't have a firm grasp on the lore yet, but as I understand it, Keepers tend to be more insular. So any of them wandering the land on their lonesome would be reasonable. Also, they're more family orientated than tribal. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I. Basic Info Characters: Zozo Sidel, Kahti Wiht Primary character: Zozo Linkshells: A few private ones. Primary RP linkshell: ^ II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Medium. Given that those terms are highly subjective in my experience, I'll say this: When I'm doing PvE, then I'm more than likely Out of Character. When I'm RPing, though, I tend to be very heavily in character, to the point where I may even react to non-roleplayers in character without thinking about it. Views on RP combat and injuries: Generally speaking, I don't require coordination as long as my character isn't rendered unplayable for more than a day. Views on IC romance: Ugh. Let's talk, okay? I tend to let things flow as naturally as possible, but I've found that most people don't like it when Seldi metaphorically rips their character's heart out of their chest and tosses it casually to a morbol. Metaphorically. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Still like to discuss it, but I generally haven't run into any issues! Views on lore: I can't imagine why someone would choose to roleplay in a setting, and ignore that setting's lore. That said, I tend to be flexible with it. I try to avoid breaking anything that's explicitly stated, and I try to keep to the "flavor" of the setting, but I tend to be flexible outside of that. I don't flat-out ignore lore breakers. Instead, I respond to them in character when I can. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): Er, well, I suppose I'll state how I use them... Generally In Character: /say, /em, /tell (Unless otherwise noted) Depends On The Channel: /fc, /linkshell Generally Out of Character: Everything else (Unless otherwise noted) III. Death and how your character handles it.
Sigil.9054 replied to Makyn Loneseeker's topic in Character Workshop
How does your character deal with killing? Seldi does give in to her predatory instincts a little bit, and if she's hunting something for food, or killing an animal/creature in defense, neither of these will phase her beyond the usual adrenaline rush from fight-or-flight mechanisms kicking in. A more familiar sentient creature is a different matter. Members of the player races and the "friendly" NPC races are people she'd rather not have to fight. If it comes down to that, though, she'll act as reasonably as possible. There's a clear distinction in her mind between someone being a threat because they're drunk, and someone being a threat because they think Seldi and/or her kind need to be exterminated. I guess, in the end, she's doesn't take it lightly, but she's practical. How did your character feel after his/her first kill? Again, killing for food is something that comes naturally, and doesn't phase her at all. Her first sentient kill was someone attacking her when she was lost and alone in the first moon following the Calamity. His motivation unknown to her. She was armed with a fillet knife that she'd been using to prepare her food. It was a messy, awful affair. She wasn't moved to tears, but she didn't eat for a few days after that. Does your character mull over it later on? (Exe. The nightmares) Again, she's practical. Consciously, she rationalizes it and moves on. Unconsciously, that first kill haunted her nightmares for months. Eorzea is a dangerous place, and that's far from the last time she's been assaulted by *something* trying to kill her, and the ones that aren't animals always have cameos in her dreams after the fact. Every time it happens, though, she gets just a little more used to it. It won't be long before it becomes second nature, and stops phasing her altogether. -
Seldi's a novice archer right now, but eventually she'll start training some kind of magic. What kind of magic really depends on how the RPs go, but she's currently being pushed toward conjury. As for her actual "job", she's claims herself a courier, but she's pretty much an adventurer when you get down to it.

Seldi regrets not being among those who made the pilgrimage to pray to the Twelve during the Calamity. She feels like the rebinding of Bahamut failed largely because of those like her who turned a blind eye to the whole thing.

Usually, when new content comes out for a game I'm playing, I'm way ahead of the curve, charging first into the new content and new stories. To that end, I've never cared much about spoilers, because, well, I'd already seen what would be spoiled. This has changed with FF14, where I've wanted to level a class I'm comfortable with before charging into Heavensward content. Since I haven't seen the new story content yet, I'm deeply appreciative about how readily people are tagging potential spoilers and the like. I still don't know what's going on in Heavensward, and I love you people for that. I thought you lot should know. Have a smitten tonberry! :tonberry: (If anyone else wants to express love/appreciation for this, feel free to use my thread to do so. ^^)

If that's true, I'm going to live forever!

You're not that interesting, or I'm not paying that close attention. Not you, the OP, specifically. I don't know you. I usually *do* walk up to people, and certainly don't mind walk ups myself. Usually, though, I have to think up a reason why my character would walk up to someone else. Unless there's something that stands out about them to pique my character's curiosity, chances are she WON'T bother someone. It's not even shyness, really. She's just content to keep to herself. As for being walked up to, when I'm sitting by myself and not emoting or anything, I'm usually doing something else, and just leaving myself available. In those moments, I don't really care if anyone walks up or not. If I want someone to take notice, I'll try "broadcasting". Sort of "role playing by myself" to indicate to others, "Yes, I'm here, and I'm available." It's a little disappointing when someone doesn't take advantage, but I'm a big girl. I'll survive.
-
Not from the MSQ, but something I noticed recently: Seldi would have grabbed Edda before she could fall off the ledge. Poor girl went off the deep end, sure, but that doesn't mean she's not worth saving.

One of my few pet peeves: Threads like this. Usually because they exist without (or get more attention than) threads about things people like.
-
Hmm. Really? Not that much different than what she is in Eorzea. Probably a professional thief/con artist. Her "day job" might be some sort of courier.

Warrior of Light, Hydaelyn's Chosen, and Bringer of Light
Sigil.9054 replied to Melkire's topic in RP Discussion
Good information. My character (A newbie as of 2.0) was referred to in a story as a WoL, which I thought was odd, so this post is exactly what I needed to clear that up. Would you mind linking the lore drops you mentioned? I'd love to read more on the matter and whatever else is covered. -
The Au-Ra immgration: How is your character taking it?
Sigil.9054 replied to LadyRochester's topic in RP Discussion
Seldi didn't notice the Au-Ra at all at first. She barely pays attention to other people, and so probably didn't even realize they were all that different until she had to talk to one directly. On top of that, her lifestyle was - until recently - so isolated that as far as she knew, "the horned people" were just people that had always been around, and she simply hadn't run across them yet. After all, no one else seems to be alarmed, so it must be a normal thing, right? -
Character Fear? Thunderstorms. Not lighting/thunder magic. Just plain, mundane thunderstorms. How do they cope? They run inside and hide until it passes. How do people respond to their fear? Given that she seems otherwise fearless, they find it odd. Some soothe. Some tease. Some ignore it. Do you think one day they could be cured of there fear? I hope not.

What server are you on, OP?
