1. Clouds of dust swirling behind them despite the stagnant air and unfortunate lack of wind, a man and his once pristinely coloured steed trot, their gait lopsided and irregular, into the bazaar. Wincing apologetically, he gives a weary wave to the few people still outside and milling about – their numbers diminished by the climate, both environmental and political. Dismounting as sprightly as possible, considering the sweltering, oppressive heat that bore down on the open plains of Thanalan, Arthur takes hold of Neige's reins; ushering her hastily under the cover of a cloth canopy. He pats his bird's beak, grateful as his hands move to ruffle the feathers on the back of her head and neck, in the hopes of cooling her off and freeing her of the pelt of dirt she now wore. Lovingly, he scratches beneath her chin before giving the top of her head a final dismissive pat as he circles around to check the cargo he'd had her lug across the desert. An entire pallet's worth of logbooks and several fulms of blank parchment, all carefully bundled in an assortment of burlap sacks and fastened to Neige's saddle, was there. Thankfully, he notes, inspecting the wear of the fabric beneath his fingertips, nothing had been lost, although the ride had jostled cargo and rider alike. His tunic's sleeves long since rolled up, Arthur sighs as he wipes the sweat from his brow with his forearm, steeling himself for what would likely be several trips to the makeshift office and back. Before he and Tani had begun the arduous task of managing Tsuwamono's books, he probably would have thought all of the supplies he'd fetched excessive. After all, the Au Ra was an up and coming businessman – he was by no means a household name, as he probably like to remain – how much of a backlog could he have? With a huff, he heaves a sack of journals from his bird's back, laughing derisively at his own thoughts. Quite a backlog, it turned out, though at the very least, it'd be unlikely that he'd want for work to do. Shuffling as quickly as the weight would allow, he glances up at the sun, silently cursing Azeyma and Her persistence as She blazed overhead, uncaring of the plight of the ants that busily scurried under Her gaze. He fixes his eyes on the horizon as best as he was able, peering around the covered mound of books in his arms. Spotting the Hyur woman at work beneath the awning, Arthur calls out to her, his voice raspy and wavering. “Fancy seeing you here,” he jokes, a halfhearted attempt at levity. He bends his knees, the leather of his boots creaking in protest as he sets the logbooks down beside Tani, only serving to fortify the wall of paperwork that surrounded her. Combing a hand through his hair, Arthur makes a quiet, disgusted noise in the back of his throat before wiping his hand dry on the front of his skirt. “How does our work fare?” He asks conversationally, tying his hair back again as he sits across from her.
2. oh, you did now? I smell a story here... have fun, but be gentle! magey types have a tendency to make for awfully squishy meat shields. o:
3. hello! I appreciate your saying so, thank you - I'm hoping this all goes over well too, haha. c: fortunately, I'm fairly sure Arthur should be able to help Oyuu with his healing studies, though at the very least, he can definitely ramble about magical theory, so that's a guarantee. I'm usually online after 9PM EST most nights, but if you'd like to RP any time earlier than that, send me a PM and I'll be happy to accommodate your schedule! c:
4. alright, awesome! I'm on most evenings from 9PM EST and later, but if you need me to be on earlier, we can work something out. c:
5. just as the title might suggest, I'm seeking connections for my character Arthur! it's kinda, well. really long overdue, honestly. I'm recently coming out of a hiatus brought on by an unpleasant combination of college stress + illness, so I figured - what better way to get back into roleplaying than with new contacts (and potentially reconnecting with old ones)? Does your character need... ※ medical attention? - Arthur is a healer, having learned from combat medics and chirurgeons both, and is always glad to help where he can. He has a strong preference for mundane, nonmagical medical practices and makes extensive use of herbal remedies whenever possible. ※ a scholar specializing in magical theory and aether sciences? - While past trauma has made Arthur reluctant to actually cast spells, magic has been not only his favourite topic of study, but his main motivation. In essence, it is his life's work. Though he has no intentions of practically applying his knowledge, it continues to have meaning to him and he still actively studies magic. ※ tutoring or instruction in magic? - Upon request, Arthur has before helped a friend better their understanding of conjury. He found the experience enlightening and beneficial to his own studies, and as such, would be eager to teach other mages. He specializes primarily in conjury derivative magics, though he also dabbles in thaumaturgy and arcanima from time to time. ※ help learning to read or write? - An unabashed bibliophile, literature is Arthur's passion. The fact that the Eorzean populace at large is illiterate is a nigh personal affront to him, and he would happily do whatever he could to abolish it. ※ a scribe or bookkeeper? - Arthur spent many of his early months in the Eorzean Alliance balancing books and handling paperwork at Mealvaan's Gate which, admittedly, wasn't much different from helping his parents manage finances back on the farm where he grew up. As for notation, Arthur's lack of funds and insatiable appetite for new reading material means that he frequently copies the contents of borrowed books into blank journals of his own – which is to say, he can write with speed and legibility. ※ a voice of reason in their great and varying endeavors? - While getting Arthur outside (of his comfort zone, of the house, etc) can be difficult, his friends and mentors continually advise him to do so in order to broaden his horizons. Of late, he's felt more inclined to follow this advice, even though it runs completely counter to his nature. if you’re interested in any of these things, you can get into contact with me here on the RPC via PM or by sending a /tell on Arthurioux Duchamps. I hope to be in contact with you all soon!
6. haha, thanks! I'll keep an eye out for you - if you see any of us around, don't be shy! feel free to send us a tell. c:
7. “All that is gold does not glitter; not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither; deep roots are not reached by the frost.” ― J. R. R. Tolkien House of Oschon is a free company for roleplayers on Balmung, named for the patron god of wanderers and vagrants. Our goal is to provide a free company where players can make friends, both in-character and out-of-character, without imposing any company themes. Characters of different employment, interests, and backgrounds are welcome. Although we have no company themes or story arcs, we do want to host in-character and out-of-character activities. After much anticipation, we have finally obtained a house for ourselves! The purpose of the house is simply to be a residence where player characters live as tenants. Shared space and whatever relationships that form are all that bind them. We encourage people to get along out-of-character and join each other in conversation, dungeoneering, player-vs-playering, leveling, and so on! While there is no formal organization in-character, we hope to establish a group with a sense of camaraderie. Our application process consists of submitting character information, followed by an interview with one or more officers. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact any of the officers listed below. 8. yes, the Professor does show up in the MSQ + postmoogle quests!
9. I'm a paragraph roleplayer, and a lot of people seem to really hate that? it's something that I've taken with me since my origins in forum RP, and I really just prefer it. (it's like collaborating on writing a book in live time! how cool is that?? o: ) I've been working hard to improve my reply speed, though when it comes to things like IC dungeon runs, I usually just cut everything down to dialogue + brief emotes, which is a challenge for me. I'm not really a fan of trying to roleplay in settings with tons of people (events mostly). part of it is tied to the above statement, but I don't know. it's easy to drown in text and lose what you were last reading + it just feels a lot more improvisational a lot of the time? while I don't plan RP down to the very last detail beforehand, it's still nice to be able to just RP without having to justify your character being there. (that, and I think I just prefer roleplaying in smaller groups. it feels like there's less pressure.) I'm super nervous around other roleplayers because of how clique-y it can all get. I've seen a lot of people talking shit about one another under thinly veiled passive aggression, people being super judgmental, and just a lot of negativity in general. I'm not saying you should RP with people you don't want to, or whose styles you don't mesh with, but good googly moogly, there is a lot of cattiness happening. so long as no one is getting hurt, let people do whatever they feel like. on the same token though, try to be considerate of others! (this means no mature [sexual, violent, disturbing, etc] RP on public channels, please. please. and, you know, the obvious - if there's anything questionable you want to bring up in RP, be respectful and ask your RP partner(s) if they're okay with it first!) we're all partaking in pretendy funtimes in a video game. we need to all be excellent to each other!!
10. I was going to be all like, 'whoa, the posture + stance of everyone you drew has is really cool and has a lot of personality! and you also got a lil bit painty with one of those lalas, nice!' but then. well. I most certainly did not make any undignified squeaking noises when I saw this. absolutely not. that's a ludicrous assumption. definitely wrong. (aaaaaaaah he's so precious and and and. you even included Carbuncle...! ;u; <333)
11. that would be the Serpent Elite's Circlet. it's wearable by any Disciple of Magic starting at level 50, and is acquirable only through the Order of the Twin Adder.
12. hehe, sorry for making things so confusing for you with regards to names, Momo. :') anyhow, it's definitely viable to have your character be minor Ishgardian nobility. there are canonically Houses that exist outside of the four High Houses, so bam! you're all set. for more info on Ishgardian social structure, this thread here might be helpful. resident lore goddess Sounsyy dropped a ton of relevant info, so have fun! and if you're on or intending to transfer to Balmung, the Ishgard RP linkshell could be a good place to start, group wise.
13. not a problem! (Ishgardian politics are super interesting to me, so. *u* ) a lot of the information I gave you is inferential, so it's somewhat speculative. all I can recommend is carefully reading through all of the flavor text - read every leve, quest, and summary the game gives you! talk to every NPC and be sure to note the demeanor of NPCs and any speech bubbles. a lot of understanding the peoples' opinions is reliant upon bearing witness to them and their lives, after all. as for the conversation I mentioned between Thordan and Aymeric, I've embedded it here because the forum refuses to let me just directly link it.
14. I. Basic Info Characters: Arthurioux Duchamps Primary character: Arthur's my only character at the moment. Linkshells: Prismatic Pearl, Chocobo Speedway Primary RP linkshell: None, really. II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): Medium. Whenever I'm not roleplaying, I'm probably putting off leveling and talking with people OOC. However, roleplay is my priority, so I'll usually drop whatever I'm doing without much hesitation. Views on RP combat and injuries: I actually really like the idea of RP combat. I'm pretty flexible in those regards. I don't mind using a roll system, though I'm also okay with determining the outcome ahead of time. As for injuries, I'm okay with letting my characters get hurt. My only stipulation is that serious injuries + maiming/dismemberment need to be discussed in advance. Also, I'm not really interested in killing off my character anytime soon. Views on IC romance: I'm actually a huge fan of romance plots. Like most people on here though, I prefer for any romantic relationships to develop naturally. (Romantic tension is an A+.) It's also important to note that Arthur is not romantically interested in female characters, sorry! Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): Non-romantic RP is obviously encouraged. Friends and acquaintances are welcomed, as well as less amicable interactions. As for family ties, he has no siblings. However, if you're interested in roleplaying as a distant relative, that's a possibility - I would like to discuss this in detail though, so please contact me via PM. Views on lore: I am a lorehound. I love the lore in FFXIV and generally try to adhere to it, though in areas with vague detail, I'll gladly improvise. If you ever want to know anything lorewise, I'll share what I know on the subject. If not, I'm always happy to learn new things, so I don't mind looking up more information. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): /say is generally IC, unless denoted otherwise by the use of parentheses or other brackets. /em is IC. As with /say, I use quotes around dialogue - I do intersperse the two, for reference! /linkshell is on a case by case basis. /tell and /party are OOC, unless stated otherwise. /shout is OOC. III. Other Info Country: United States. Timezone: EST, or GMT -5. Contact info: I don't have too many alternate methods of contact, so your best bet is to either send me a PM through the RPC here or send a /tell to Arthurioux Duchamps on Balmung. I check my PM inbox on here daily, and I'm ingame most evenings. [glow=blue]~Special announcements or additional information can be found in the posts below~[/glow]
15. hmmm, I believe the localization team has been doing its damnedest to make the English script as meaningful and intelligible as possible, yes. but I really feel there is some nuance lost at times.
16. valid perspective! I've done some analysis as you suggested, and I've already got a ton of... I don't know – personality? character development? – surrounding my main and I don't know if I could pull it off. especially when I consider the fact that a lot of it is reliant upon events in the MSQ. I'm thinking I'll transfer him because of his level, but fantasia + name change him, so it feels like a fresh start. I totally get your analogy. but at the same time, I just 'finished' my first run of WoD and we had three dragoons just Leeroy Jenkins-ing the whole thing and thinking they could MT. we wiped so many times that half of the alliance just bailed. orz that, however, is something of a relief to hear though. I kept hearing speculation that miqo'te outnumbered hyur and it seemed plausible, considering I know quite a few. the thing is though, I don't feel super attached to the idea of my character being an actual part of a clan. mostly because of the lore surrounding 'solitary Keeper males' and because I honestly don't think he'd stick around anyway. that's true. with early access, I actually forgot that the game hadn't officially released yet! and it's been errors left and right, plus queues. I'm currently on Famfrit, so the queue never exceeds 10, but with highly populated servers come enormous queues. I don't recall getting a fantasia through HW. I think that was for the collector's edition? I already have one through my subscription anyway, so that's one less obstacle in the way! anyway, thank you both so much for your input! I'll back to working on my character's wiki page. with luck, I'll see you all on Balmung! >:0
17. hi there, I'm Tabris! I'm new to the forums, well... that's not entirely true. I've been lurking on here for weeks, trying to get a feel for the community. aaaaand reading lore and headcanons + theories, of course. --MMORPG background I've played MMOs for a while now! started with Runescape in... 2003 or 2004, and I've been bouncing from game to game since then. the only MMO I can say that I've substantially played besides FFXIV is WoW, but it's been years since then. --RP experience I've been roleplaying since about 2005, though a large majority has been via forums + IM. I've never roleplayed in an MMO before, so I'm kiiiiind of nervous, haha. the prospect of fiddling with emotes and all that is.... daunting, to say the least. please be gentle with me, everyone. ;; --Character ideas/info oh boy. this has been something of a problem. in the past four days alone, I've gone through at least five character ideas. I have pages written on each of them, in word processors and notebooks alike. I'm notoriously indecisive, but that's not the only issue. I keep doubting myself because what if this character is too boring? what if this one's too cliched? too annoying? god, do we really need another miqo'te?? ....kind of at a loss here. --How did you learn about the coalition? to be honest, I don't remember? I think it might've been through a link on the Lodestone. --What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? I would be all for heavy roleplay, but I get overwhelmed really easily – I tend to go all in and then burn myself out. I love FFXIV and I love roleplaying, so I really don't want either of those things to become draining for me. I think I'll start with somewhere around medium, and if I get the hang of it, maybe I'll up the intensity. --Anything from real life you're comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc) hmmm, why not? I'm a 20 year old liberal arts major, though I'm going to be changing to computer science in the fall. games and stories are my two greatest passions, and I really don't want to end up rambling about either of those here, so I'm cutting myself off while I still can. (feel free to PM me with any book/movie/anime/game etc recommendations. I'm always looking for more media to tear through.) okay, now for the entire reason I even felt inclined to post - my question! should I transfer my main to Balmung or should I just make a new character altogether? I'm loathe to make a new character because I just recently hit level 50... but at the same time, should I really transfer him? you guys on Balmung are probably drowning in miqo'te as it is. the only reason I'm asking is because it's a Sunday night here, and just before midnight, which means I miiight be able to squeeze a new character in soon.
