My take on the anthropology of the Keepers of the Moon
allgivenover replied to Shayrei's topic in RP Discussion
Whoops, meant to type that we see one KEEPER male in game, not one Miqo'te male period. We actually get to see 4 Seekers and 1 Keeper. There's quite a number of females at the Forgotten Springs camp, and that doesn't include the FATE there that spawns many more unnamed females to aid in the defense against a worm attack at the gate. I haven't counted them, but there's certainly more than ten and less than fifty. There are three males at the camp, one Nunh patriarch and two young males aspiring to Nunh. The fourth Seeker male in game can be found in Vesper bay. Couple this with the fact that you find Seeker and Keeper females in abundance in ALL of the city states, with very, very few males (in fact, none can be found inside the city-states at all) we come to some fairly solid reasoning that Miqo'te males are just rare all around. It's explicitly stated that males are born less frequently, but not that the frequency is 'only slight' (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/61150-Miqo-te-Naming-Conventions), the text reads: Though there are ten suffixes listed above, rarely do even the largest Keeper of the Moon families have more than two or three sons. This is not by choice. Nature merely sees to it that more females are born to this race. The wording is ambiguous how many more females are born than males, but as I wrote above, we can draw reasonable conclusions about it. If we must choose a ratio, I'd guess the chances of a Miqo'te child being male are no greater than 1 in 4, and I feel even that is being generous given how scarce they are in game. EDIT: Hunted down the Japanese naming convention page, which states that male births are low. "※元々、男性が生まれる確率が低いため、10人もの男児が生まれることなど、事実上ほとんどありませんが、伝統として決められてはいる状態です。" It also says that the chance of using all ten suffixs for Keeper male names is virtually impossible due to this low male birth rate. Then why didn't they write "three young women and a young man"? Breeding male is a very deliberate use there, but you also mistake me. I didn't mean that Keepers follow Seeker mating rules, I meant that they have breeding males but unfortunately we have no details beyond that wording and logical thinking about what a society lacking in males would be like. My way around this was to separate my character from his traditional family long before considerations for breeding were ever on the table for him. I'll wait for SE to give us more about this (if they ever do) rather than decide how it would work myself. If anything comes to light that's contrary to what I have, then his history can be modified to match it. It's possible there are anomalous modern Miqo'te Keepers that favor monogamy, and I'm certainly not saying you're wrong if your Miqo'te character desires it, and in fact that idea of a male all to themselves may be rather attractive to a Miqo'te female. This difference of opinion on the matter has made for great RP between my Keeper boy and other Miqo'te. I'm only stating that finding monogamy among traditional Miqo'te, Keeper or Seeker, is hard to swallow from a logical standpoint. -

Some of this makes for some nteresting places that Keeper culture could go as a whole in light of the calamity, but it has absolutely no basis in lore whatsoever. I know it's frustrating that we don't details on such an atypical culture that many RPers are keen on being a part of, but that doesn't give us the right to just make it up and form a "player made compendium". -

Keepers do not pair up monogamously. They have breeding males ala the Seekers of the Sun. Unfortunately we have no details beyond that. From a level 25 Quarry Mill levequest that states explicitly that Keepers have breeding males as well (I forget the name at the moment) Secondly, this topic needs a disclaimer that a lot of this is your invention, isn't canon, and relies on a large number of assumptions. We don't get to decide the lore or the direction that Keepers should take, SE does. Unfortunately SE only gave us scraps and scarce details that begged even more questions. In the case of Keepers, all we ever got regarding sexuality and mating was the description that they are matriarchal and that males are rare. Few conclusions can be drawn from so little canon info, Keepers being monogamous isn't one of them. Consider this, Miqo'te males are born very rarely (there is ONE that we get to see in game), if they paired monogamously with females there wouldn't be enough males to pair with, and as a result the Keepers would have passed into obscurity long ago. This topic has been poked at to death many times in the past, my favorite post on the subject can be found here:(http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=2961). I'm not saying you have to accept it, but it does make reasonable conclusions regarding what a fantastical culture with these features would be like. -
It's mostly the same as the E3 reveal. No new plot or dialogue. P3xKbPooKAo

Li is illiterate and hostile to the idea of learning. Also he can be rather selfish and holds some prejudice against Hyur.

We don't get to decide what's lore and what isn't. We learn about the game lore by what's presented in game and official lore posts, we don't get to cherry pick it because we don't like certain aspects. Perhaps Sunseekers were written that way to cater to fan-service, but even if that were true that doesn't make that lore invalid. This doesn't mean you have to RP your Sunseeker as promiscuous, and in fact many might really like the idea of monogamy and reduced sexual availability as they would have exclusive access to a male. If it bothers you so much that a good number of Seekers are canonically promiscuous or have no problem with monetizing their sexuality, consider that it doesn't reflect badly on YOU personally. You are not your character in real life and you are not a Miqo'te in real life, canon promiscuity presented by other Miqo'te doesn't reflect poorly on you out of character in the same way that my main Rakka'li acting like a selfish jerk doesn't actually reflect poorly on me out of character. If it still bothers you despite considering that, then consider re-rolling to Keeper, as I haven't found a single promiscuous Keeper female in game.

It's only happened to me once so far. It's an intermittent issue that I suspect has to do with your immediate surroundings, but I can't say for sure.
-
It's been two days and it's not a game breaking issue as it seems to be difficult to reproduce. It's way too soon to say SE is ignoring it. The forum is a good place to report bugs, but it also helps to fill out a support ticket in game with details of the messages being dropped, such as what was typed and at what time, what area you were in, etc.

Send me a /tell if you notice me in game and want to RP.

Something like 250 people showed up to the gala Kylin hosted last weekend. Also I notice rp going on in /say fairly often in pretty much every location it is suitable, so yes Balmung is super active.

I think it's actually pretty well thought out myself, how Seekers are depicted in game. There's been a mountain of debate already in this forum about it, and it seems we're destined to debate it again. Which is alright I suppose. A good number of Seekers are sex workers or downright bold about their desires, and you see it pretty much throughout Eorzea. The latter is even found in the U' tribe in the Sagoli, where a Seeker girl comments that she wouldn't mind you peeking at her bathing. However, there's also a good amount of Seekers who don't show any signs of being lustful or a sex worker. My take on it is that in Seeker culture, sex isn't nearly as taboo or as closely tied with shame (like in modern real world culture) as it is in other Eorzean race's culture, and Seekers themselves vary wildly in personality and disposition. Some of them are perhaps more guarded about their sexuality, while others see no issue whatsoever with monetizing it. In that way I think SE has done a pretty good job of presenting how a race that likely holds few taboos regarding sexuality would interact with races that do have taboos about it. The other races that deal with social taboos regarding casual flings or have feelings of shame tied up with sexuality would be more likely to solicit prostitutes to deal with sexual frustration (and indeed, there is a correlation in the real world between populations that are more religious or traditional on the whole and the solicitation of prostitutes or the usage of pornography). Thus, Seekers who have no qualms about monetizing their sexuality have no shortage of eager customers. Just keep in mind that these alien cultural norms do not reflect on your character negatively. This is a race of cat inspired people we're talking about here (and cats are not exactly monogamous, with kittens of the same litter often having different fathers). As stated before, Seekers seem to vary wildly in personality, and just as other humans monetizing their sexuality in the real world does not negatively represent you so it goes with your character and Seekers that do so.

Shuichi Ikeda voicing Lahabrea was reason enough for me to set it to Japanese voices permanently. He's the Darth Vader of Japan if you were wondering. -6QE9W3342I He's getting older now, but his voice is so distinct and powerful and I love hearing it when I don't expect too.

It's latency again. The EU servers are actually hosted in Montreal, Canada with the US servers. I know, it's silly.

I wouldn't expect anyone to be extremely proficient in carpentry IRL just so they could RP a carpenter in XIV. Having said that, a little google research couldn't possible hurt your portrayal.

Videogame reviews [Now: Final Fantasy V]
allgivenover replied to Robyn's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Sound review with good reasoning about its flaws. Having said that, it should get an extra .5 for gracing us with Clash on the Big Bridge. 6CMTXyExkeI -
Did you ever receive a confirmation email confirming your legacy status and the email about your name being featured in the credits? I see you wrote that your account was canceled December 31, 2011. Final Fantasy XIV did not start charging players until January of 2012. To qualify for Legacy status three cumulative months of paid game time was necessary.

Those are good reasons that a species may not live as long as another species, that's why I wrote there's no reason to assume instead of writing that it definitely wasn't the case that they had accelerated lifespans, because I don't know. SE didn't make it a point to comment on longevity, so any speculation there would be purely for amusement. However, they did make it a point to talk about breeding males, matriarchy, and the infrequency of male birth. Thus, applying "biology crap" to make educated, reasoned theories about cultural norms derived from the information they gave us is a reasonable, useful thing to speculate on.
-
Miqo'te are more human like than cat like by a wide margin, so there's no reason to assume that they would have an accelerated lifespan compared to Humans or Hyur. There's nothing about any of the races longevity aside from the bits we've picked up about how Lalafell can apparently live over one hundred years and still remain active and healthy.

Mike is a little modern, but Michael should be fine. http://fandango.exp.jp/name-generator.php Have you checked this random name generator? It's fine if you want to go with Michael, but I just wanted to link you to it in case you hadn't seen it yet.

My own personal take on it is that Keepers pretty much did whatever they wanted. Reasons being that monogamy wouldn't be exactly common due to there being so few males, one male to one female would mean a lot of females with no potential mate. There's no way the Keepers could have survived as a distinctive, separate clan under a 1:1 pairing system for thousands of years, and some Keeper names have been around for several eras. However, they don't have the Tia/Nunh social structure either. According to this quest dialogue from a guildlevel in phase 2 and 3, Keepers do have breeding males. Here is the screenshot I took. A breeding male implies multiple partners, but as SE is unlikely to give us details on how this all works in detail any time soon, and the fact that Keeper society is "highly matriarchal", here is how I'm rolling with it: The females pretty much choose what they want to do. If they favor a single male above all others, they might choose only him to ever couple with - this is in fact how my character's mother was, she only ever paired with Rakka'li's father, but she didn't care when he roamed elsewhere. Depending on her personality it's not impossible that a female Miqo'te Keeper might try to hoard a male all to herself, but I think that's unlikely, due to the whole rarity of males thing. She may only ever choose him, but not really care if he goes off and pairs off with another female at a different time. For a while I considered the possibility that the males don't get any choice at all on the matter of pairing, but I discarded that after it was made clear that Keeper males are even more solitary and reclusive than other Miqo'te (or tend to be, my own is a bit more sociable, but he very much enjoys being "alone in a crowd"). Another user, Myxie Tryxle, wrote out a rather well thought out piece on Miqo'te mating habits, though keep in mind it's all written from a purely animal evolutionary biology perspective, so the mileage varies from one RPer to the next how much of it they want to apply to their own RP. At the least it's a good explanation as to why monogamy is likely not a usual behavior for Miqo'te http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/showthread.php?tid=2961, at least traditionally. There are plenty of characters who break the mold, and really breaking that mold might be an attractive prospect for a female. Keep in mind that all this doesn't mean that Miqo'te can't fall in love or care for one another, it just means that likely do not pair in a monogamous way, or have much of a connection between love and sex. Additionally, keep in mind there's a bit more freedom to work with compared to the Seeker side of the Miqo'te coin. Keepers are said to run in small tribes that are no more than two or three families in size, so it's entirely possible that customs vary from tribe to tribe. I'm sure you can find a way to make it all fit for you and the RP you want.

I looked for that place in the beta, but I couldn't find it anywhere near Ul'Dah. I saw the base right outside of Grid and the base right outside of La Noscea, but I couldn't find that facility. Didn't even know where it was until you said so. Still, it's an industrial zone, not a military one if I'm correct? I recall there being quite a bit of fortifications and even a high level area with level 40+ magitek mobs about. I'll have to look again in phase 4.

Aysun is unaware of much of the Garlean's advances over the last 5 years, 'kay. Was answering ICly. I was responding to Ryanti, his character is an Ul'dahn native non time-skipper who would know about it.
