Hingan and Eorzean are not the same language A few months ago Hingan === Eorzean was a thin theory at best, but now the evidence is so overwhelming that continuing to push the idea makes me wonder if there isn’t a racist or hate-filled motivation fueled by a dislike for anime or Japanese culture. To be clear, if you don’t like Hingan in your RP that’s just like your opinion man, but to deny its existence in the lore given what we know and what the devs have said and good logical deduction skills would make me question your motivation as to why you’re doing it at this point. Here is a list of why the idea doesn’t work particularly in the context of the western localization - but really it doesn’t work in any localization. The game script is loaded with moments like this verifying that Hingan is both romanized Japanese AND a different language from Eorzean . Hingan is not a dead language either, as Oboro would not make this statement if it were . All localizations are valid, the Japanese version of the game isn’t any more “true” than any other version. This is word of God (devs) . Eorzea is a setting based on western fantasy tropes, a Europe style continent, complete with European culture analogs and appropriately appropriated naming conventions. None of this works if Eorzean === Japanese. . Developers have confirmed that there were many languages in Eorzea that fell out of use, this perfectly explains why Elezen have French names but don’t speak French. Note this doesn’t confirm that Hingan is dead, that would be bad deductive reasoning. . In media the language of the actors and characters is almost always the same as the target audience. This doesn’t mean that in an American made World War II French occupation drama the native language of all the speakers is English, in much the same way that the Japanese version of Final Fantasy XIV doesn’t mean that Eorzean === Japanese. . Eorzean script is “olde English” - with just a few minutes of exposure English competent readers can read it, easily. How could this be if Eorzean === Japanese because of the Japanese localization speaking to its audience in Japanese? Spoilers: The Japanese localization is in Japanese so that Japanese people can understand it. At this point would we argue from a position of good faith that Eorzeans are reading this writing, mentally translating it to Hingan/Japanese, then translating back to “olde English” when they need to write something? This is a ridiculous idea but necessary if we thought that Eorzean === Japanese or that Eorzean === Hingan . Notably, all of the writing in Doma/Kugane uses the Japanese style characters we see in game, none of it is the Eorzean script. If Eorzean === Hingan then one culture here is really going out of its way to make it easy for the other at their own expense. For no reason at all. . The Au Ra Raen naming conventions lore shows us a complex name meaning system that uses Japanese characters. This simply could not be if Hingan was not a distinct language from Eorzean, because it would mean that Eorzean was also Japanese. Refer to earlier list points for why that doesn’t fly . The lore book did a really bad job of explaining itself. What it means to say is that Doman and Hingan are different dialects of the same language, not that Eorzean === Hingan . Here’s a breakdown of all the models that have been passed around for months regarding this issue. Eorzean and Hingan are distinct languages, both living (strongest model, only one that works in the setting completely) . Eorzean and Hingan are distinct languages, but one of them is dead (this results in a broken setting) . Eorzean and Hingan are the same language, and that language is “common” or English or some other magically undefinable language that somehow makes all of this work (this results in a broken setting) . Eorzean and Hingan are the same language, and that language is Japanese (this results in a broken setting) To be clear… if you don’t like Hingan in your role play as a separate language, fine, but to continue to push the idea that it doesn’t exist in lore is simply wrong and bad logic. It requires cherry picking, bad conclusions, or petty hatred to uphold. We don't see the same posts here or in the wild regarding loan words or language usage of say... Mongolian "Xaelic"... because that and other languages are not tied to Japanese in some way. This is also why we don't see posts chastising other languages as "inappropriate" to use in roleplay, only Hingan as a Japanese analog (which it is). *This post has been moderated so that it no longer violated the board rules.

discussion Your thoughts on jump potions?
allgivenover replied to Parth Makeo's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Post is in Japanese and it's a lot to translate... but from the looks at it they've thought a lot about how they're going to do this. Yoshi is not confirming it's happening I don't think, but I think they intend to and saying it's still a might is just a way to cover their ass in the unlikely case they change their minds. Unfortunately I cannot link it here directly, but here is the reddit topic where it's being discussed. reddit post -

Well, I doubt the game would /die/ outright, but yes it could suffer. -

It wouldn't bother me at all if it only jumped you to the "start" of the current expansion. If it were implemented now it put you at the start of HW with all MSQ completed for ARR, at level 50. Or level 60 with all of HW done for Stormblood. Also if they do this I really hope they give a discount to people who have actually completed the quests. This would really help with RP alts and I would use it all the time. -
Check the "reversals" checkbox, some of the cards will be flipped. Upright is astral, inverted is umbral.

v1.1 update Astrologian Fortune Telling spreads now display associated lore Kurenai Nagi's fanon spread has been added I would like to add the minor arcana at some point, but any spread using them would indeed be fanon, and as there is no card art to source it would be quite the undertaking. Anyway, I'll tinker with this again when I have more time
-
It's nothing spectacular, but here's a tool for Astrologian roleplayers I made for fun after the lore book revealed that there are canon major arcana spreads (ala real life tarot). Right now it's more functional than anything, but I do intend to add a fanon spread or two and lore. Maybe more if time and energy allow. Astrologian Fortune Telling I don't mind comments or feedback but do keep in mind that this was just for fun and I don't ever intend to treat it at the same level as my professional work.

Not directly related, but have you or anyone come across any explanation for why Xaela just... were totally absent from Eorzea? We're talking about a race of nomads that's existed for a very, very long time that somehow hasn't managed to make its way to Eorzea, a diverse land made up of immigrant populations. Ishgard is explained, Au Ra look like they might be Dragon people. Dragon people are not welcome, makes sense. The rest of Eorzea isn't explained. Unless Ishgard kept Au Ra out of the rest of Eorzea in the past too? Maybe? This doesn't apply to the reclusive Raen, it's not too much of a stretch to believe they wouldn't have made it after all this time. It's just the very "nomadic" trait of the Xaela that doesn't sit well.

These are the sorts of questions that hopefully the lore book will answer, at least in part.

I wouldn't worry too much about the kanji meaning because you get strange situations like this that don't work in english at all without lengthy explanations. 剣 this is the character for 'ken'. As a surname you could say it as either Tsurugi or Kenzaki, and you wouldn't know until it was spoken or written in furigana. A taste of how further complex this can get... 剣 could also be "clock hand" so.... As for your particular idea, shadow sword/blade/whatever isn't really any kind of "proper" surname so it will immediately out you as "wrong". Not to say that you can't do it, anime characters have crazy names after all that you'd never find IRL and really you're not going to be running into native speakers on Balmung, so if you want to rock Kageken, Kenkage, Tsurugikage, or whatever that's fine. You might be able to get something you like off of 切 which is "cut". Something like Kirikage.. same problem as Tsurugikage really, but your mileage may very. Personally I would go with something that sounds a bit more natural like 影貴 which means "prized shadow" and could be romanized as 'Kageki'. If you're really worried about doing it "right" beyond that... don't be afraid to use the name generator. There's no shame in it and the romanizations may lead you to a name you really really like rather than just sort of accept.

One thing to consider is that many of your RP desires can be met without taking a Job ICly if you really examine them. However, there's no suitable alternative if you just want to play one, and there's nothing wrong with that.

-____________- The sexual dimorphism is so great that a transgender Au Ra would be a nightmare scenario. EDIT: This is kinda lore-breaky to me, Au Ra dimorphism is a signature trait of the race, but whatever, people should do what they want to do. I'll just be off ignoring it in my own social bubble.

Well I'm screwed... Since Aoi's child will only be half Au Ra... As for your question, it'd depend how you'd want it to look but there's lots of way to go about it. Even in real life genetics there are dominate and recessive traits. It could be as simple as choosing a dominate side, as mentioned prior. Maybe a super short au ra for half lala? Might explain the 'boy' Fem Auri that we see walking about. Yes, but in this case there's enough difference that you basically have to make it up and then inform others of your interpretation, which means inevitably clashing with others while at the same time risking the official lore overwriting you. It's just not a good idea, but by all means do what makes you happy. What boy Fem Au Ra?
-
Do whatever you want, though I'd be hesitant myself to write like... a Lalafell/Au Ra. Or basically Au Ra/anything. What would it even look like? For a while I had an alt that was 1/4th Elezen 3/4 Hyur, I basically did it to have a french surname.

No, it really does. He's claiming something is widespread where I live, and that's just not true at all outside of maybe - maybe - some backwoods inbred hicks (though I question whether they would know what a cotillion was). He's talking about my home and painting it in a negative light by making claims that have no basis in reality. Forgive me for being offended when my home, my people, and my culture are being lied about Far be it from me to deny someone a chance to indulge in righteous indignation, but you're off the mark, His point about accepting what's normal to you is still very much valid is what I mean. Also I'm from the south too, fuck the south. That's part of it. Another part is him saying that it's prevalent in many societies today, then he goes on to state something that happened to him in the south as an example. This is but a singular occurrence. I can assure you that it is not "prevalent" and most people you mention this to would think it's ridiculous. The example is perhaps bad, but the point about accepting what's "normal" to you stands.

3.2 Story and Discovery Thread: HERE BE [SPOILERS]
allgivenover replied to Warren Castille's topic in FFXIV Discussion
Well we kind of already knew that Succor was corruptible. It was strongly suggested in some of the stories (combined with what we saw of Amdapor City the first time) that the Amdapori were mixing Succor with things they shouldn't have and using it for evil ends. I don't think the Elementals were able to control it once they had given the secrets of it to the Amdapori, but they had a really definitive way of taking care of that issue when the Amdapori got too big for their britches. Well sure, but we hadn't ever seen anything concrete, it's nice to see it. -

I assumed because the defenses were not stirred until recently that they were part of it, but now that I think on it that's still an assumption. Bolded the important part, this is what I meant. I was posting from work on in my brief downtime and didn't properly articulate. Though I also thought that perhaps the statue itself was animated with corrupt succor, I suppose there's no reason to believe that really. -
Both are fine. Anything that is close to the 16th-18th century works really.

3.2 Story and Discovery Thread: HERE BE [SPOILERS]

How so? I mean we saw some undead Amdapori and Mhachi enemies but I figured they were just your standard undead (unsurprising since the place was crawling with voidsent, not every body could be properly put to rest), not a successful attempt at bringing the dead back to life, unless the former actually is what you were implying and I misunderstood- I felt like there wasn't much lore revealed in the new dungeon (as much as I loved what we got) so I'm feeling like there must've been something I missed somewhere. The former. What I get from this is that they used Succor to make undead, which is sort of but not really different from regular undead? Although it has been stated that White Magic can "deliver comrades from the icy grip of death itself", I don't think this means it can recover the long dead.
