1. Some Astro lore confirming the backward thinking of Eorzeans. It's still far from a modern world.
2. I'm glad someone else mentioned the possibility that merchants might be looked down on as they were in real world pre-modern Japan. It's not something I'm comfortable about overtly stating, but it's interesting to consider. I'm writing my Raen's family to be a relatively recent addition to the ruling class. It's kind of a "not that important to RP" detail, but the family name wasn't changed that much when they transitioned, it went from two characters that meant roughly "evergreen tender" to only one that means roughly "destroy the enemy". It's a bit of a stretch to use that as a family name in real world Japanese, but I've realized looking at the name generator that some of the Raen generated names aren't quite correct either, so there's some wiggle room if you're careful. Anyway, Kurenai's father views their humble background with contempt. Whether it makes more sense in lore for that to come from societal pressure or personal feelings is irrelevant. The result is that he shielded Kurenai from anything remotely "beneath" her. This provides a window to RP her as both extremely capable in some areas and totally naive in others. She has some martial training and knows a thing or two about the finer things, but if you ask her about how the average Doman lives she couldn't give you a straight answer. This way I don't really need an answer for a lot of of the gaps in lore. Kurenai being a teenager who was extremely sheltered, too young to engage in politics, and too apart from most common people, she simply doesn't know. Obviously, you don't need a very specific background to avoid needing answers to our lore gap questions. Your Raen could simply be too emotionally scarred to even talk about his or her homeland for example. I'm sure other ways to get around the issue could be concocted given enough thought.
3. My Raen was "ruling class". All this means really is that she grew up with advantages most common folk don't, and is probably used to getting her way and being treated with respect - since people of higher social status always are. You don't really have to stretch far to RP it.
4. Just write a reason for it and no one will care.
5. Sidereal is a brand new FC looking for members in this exciting, post Heavensward Eorzea. Details about the FC plot will be thin at first, with the aim for things to remain as mysterious and as interesting as long as possible. A long, slow burn rather than a race to the finish. Role-play has not yet begun, as we're looking for a few members to get things going.
6. Perhaps you've seen it, in that nothing between dreams. The void, that thinks. The face, half unseen. The burning sky, that calls. Perhaps you've even felt it, a yearning. Always close at hand, a true companion. It will change you. You will burn brighter than ever. And then you will be consumed. _____ Sidereal is a quality focused RP Free Company driven on collaborative lore-first storytelling and meaningful character development. Sidereal features an original plot intended to act as the FC's "Main Scenario Quest". The plot is intended to last a long while, and it will grow alongside the official game lore with the intent that it always remain compelling, exciting, and fun, with the intend to "bend but never break" the game's official lore. Role-Play and Free Company Philosophy Quality over Quantity - A focus on quality membership rather than accumulating as many members as possible. Anything Goes - In Sidereal, there are no hard rules about what content is appropriate for role play. Eorzea is a bright and terrible place, as long as your content serves a narrative purpose it will be welcome. Lore First - Lore before game mechanics. Official lore before player creation. Game Interest - Active and lasting interest in the game itself. We're here for role play, but we're not here for only role play. Clear IC/OOC Barrier - You are not your character, your character is not you, your life is not this game, this game is not your life. For more, please visit our site or send a tell in game to Kurenai Nagi.
7. This is way off. Yarijin would literally translate as "spear human", it's shoving the separate words "spear" and "human" together. It says to the reader that you're more a human spear than a spear using human. In this context Soujutsu is "art of the spear", soujutsuka is best translated as "spear man/woman". The final character 家 (ka) in this case is sort of like putting "ist" at the end of a word in english that might describe a person's skill set (like illusionist). Thus the "literal" translation of soujutsuka is "spearist". "Spearist" is really... wrong in English right? This is what you're doing in the other direction when you mash words together to create names like Yarijin, yes it has a meaning, but it's just off in ways that's going to make you stick out like a sore thumb among Raen NPCs. Lancer is "soukihei", "yarikihei" is again shoving two words together that individually have meaning but is really awkward when forced together this way. If you're fine with something that seems Japanese to a non-speaker, then it's fine to approach naming your Raen so haphazardly, but this topic is about assistance for following Au Ra Raen naming conventions, and that way is not the way to go about it.
8. Kanehana/Yasuhana: These are more like surnames - the entirety of the words being written out rather than shortened. Japanese are really fond of shortening everything, especially for aliases and given names. Japanese names can be very complicated, especially pre-modern names. Almost all of them can be written in a way that conveys a meaning that you isn't heard when it's spoken unless you are very experienced with inflection, and sometimes even the true meaning may only be known when it's written.. Example: The character hana 花 (flower) can be used in the name 朱澄花 (Suzuka), with the last syllable "ka" being written with the character 花's on-yomi reading This happens because there are two ways 花 can be read, the kun-yomi reading - native Japanese reading, and the on-yomi reading - the chinese reading. Almost all kanji have on-yomi readings except for the ones that were developed exclusively in Japan. Torihime/Himetori: Unfortunately it's not a good idea to just push two words together to make a name, that's not how Japanese evolved. Torihime and Himetori (I assume you're going for bird princess) are not really any sort of name I've ever heard of or read about, it'd be more a title if anything. As for a surname that means spearman, you could use the word spear 鎗, as Au Ra Raen/Doman ruling warrior class names do seem to be rather direct. If that doesn't do it for you there's also 鎗場 (Yariba) which literally means spear place, that might read as rather common to a native Japanese, unfortunately my knowledge kind of ends there. I never got around to extensively studying Japanese name etymology. My best advice if you're worried about being authentic? Mash the random name generator until you find a given name you like, then write it down and mash it again until you find a surname you like, then look up that surname's meaning, if it has something to do with war then you're golden.
9. Raen female naming tip: Try not to use the -ko ending for your character's name unless you absolutely must. Raen names are 16th-18th century, and -ko didn't come into common use before the 20th. In fact it was a MALE name ending before it switched genders. Also, there will be a million -ko's, so consider not going for it. Names ending in the following are a not-entirely-foolproof-but-good-thing-to-look-out-for: -ri -ne -yo -ya
10. Well, we all wish for impossibly things now and then.
11. "Fantards"? Wow, that isn't unnecessary or anything. OH WELL LOL In b4 moderation for image macro. Despite it being totally warranted and relevant.
12. Software engineer. Can't talk about my work beyond that. =/
13. I8phcu_7y10 AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
14. This is the quest I was referring too, thank you.
15. Where on Earth did this information come from? O_o To my understanding the age at which Padjal cease to physically age varies from child to child, hence why we have the older Kan-E-Senna versus, say, her younger siblings. Those few innovations in the city states are not ubiquitous throughout the setting. Additionally I'd like to see some proof about aether manipulation giving citizens electricity. Lighting lamps for the nighttime is a low level quest in Limsa Lominsa, so yes it's entirely plausible that Ul'dah has people who light the lamps every single night. That's how we did it in the real world before electricity came about. Eorzea has mechanical marvels, but it is not a modern minded world like ours. Very far from it. If you disagree, fine. We don't have to acknowledge each other's interpretation of the setting. This is also where I recall it from.
16. We honestly have nothing to go on really, we are not even actually given any of the character's age at all, except for Nanamo (and that one had to be deduced, it wasn't outright stated). My own personal way of looking at it: As a non-modern society I think "adulthood" in Eorzea is likely to be loose at best. Historically, sexually mature people were never considered children, in fact the concept of being a "teenager" is a relatively modern development in our human history. Having said that, puberty hit much later in the pre-modern world than it did now. It didn't start to slide back to where it is now until the 1850s. Obviously it's hard to place Eorzea in a time that's analogous to Earth history, but considering there's still an absence of an industrial revolution and that most people can't read yet I'd wager it to be somewhat similar. In my own head cannon adulthood in Eorzea is whenever menarche starts up, which in the old world (pre 1840 Earth) was anywhere from 15-18 depending on where you were. It's a bit harder to place for boys. Since there's more variation there when they start. I didn't have any facial hair until I was halfway through 20 years of age, some boys I knew in middle school were sporting scruff. I do wish we had some ages to go off of, but in their absence I just stick to the real world counterparts. It's not that important anyway.
17. this seems fairly accurate Not sure how it can seem accurate when it's based on nothing.
18. Hahhahahaha~ I like how he somehow gains demonic summoning powers, yet retains his backwood/limsan fusion drawl way of speaking despite it.
19. Well, he's dead. Maybe he became a demon summoner in the afterlife or something. Yeah.
20. I know, but I've never been a fan of it and Aya's art is what the character sprites were designed from, so... /shrug
21. ...you've had this exact conversation with others in prior threads, do you really just ignore what was stated by the devs themselves that the western team members have a hand in the lore and that they are not just a localization team? Koji fuckin' wrote the lyrics to Dragonsong, and it's all lore stuff. Come on.
22. It's exactly in tune with the source art it was replicated from.
23. Bloodlines is a wonderful game, totally overlooked. Really anything from the DraculaX era is good. Even if Iga had no hand in them, he perfected the franchise from that foundation. Yeah... Castlevania is kind of a big deal for me.
