  8. Thank you and glad to be here, Already so warm a welcome. I wish I had gone to FFXI instead of WoW, but by the time I had realized how much more potential XI had some of my social groups in WoW had already come to (I hate to use "rely" but thats pretty much it) on me. Here's to Eorzea!
  9. Some Excellent points above, I'll throw in my own. While not a large pvp'er myself I have used the more formal arenas as set pieces in my own stories. The key points I was thinking of using it for in FFXIV ARR providing that it is set up in the arena style some what like Dire Maul. Hosting Competitions to settle disputes (Your craftsmanship is better than mine?! TO THE PITS! WE FIGHT WITH NAUGHT BUT WHAT WE MAKE!) Training, My sister and I in WoW would often enter the arena to face off attempting tactics on one-another. Entertainment, Betting on matches, simply passing the time, maybe rooting for some favorites, mind you this is dependent on our ability to sit in the stands and observe the matches, which I think would also lead to some interesting opportunities. (holding some back door deals as the fights happens?) The fights could also have a more "Swordspoint" importance (excellent book by Ellen Kushner) where the fights serve as official closures to arguments, the winner being "right" regardless of the actual truth. lots of things to considered, it likely won't be a large part of my day to day operations, but to see a new star rise like the Ala'Mhigan Bull would be something worth remembering. Hrm...
  10. Thank you both, @Knave: Good to meet a Steamwheedle Veteran, how about we start with Beard Buddies? its like friends with benefits but with more face grooming.
  11. Greetings everyone, I hope to see you all in Eorzea, and introduce you to a friend if she'd stop dragging her feet and post already.
  12. I. Basic Info Characters: Quarimar Baenund Primary character:Quarimar Baenund Linkshells:Illusions Primary RP linkshell:None II. RP Style Amount of RP (light, medium, heavy): I stay in character unless expressly communicated to otherwise (at which point I usually switch to whispering the person) I would consider myself a mix between Medium and Heavy, some days I just want to run off and slay some Peiste's and avoid the larger events, but if approached I never turn away some one who wants to talk or could use a hand for a moment. Views on RP combat and injuries: As you will find me saying frequently, context is everything, I rarely roleplay the actions in combat while in combat, but I will use it as a catalyst to explain why I am fatigued, or why I won't be helping with a craft ect, "Listen Nalnavras, I would love to help, I offered you the opals out of kindness, but I just spent the last two hours waggling my fingers and clutching my staff trying to keep everyone on their feet, my hands are still shaking!" He holds up his left hand to show the slight tremble before sighing "I would only be doing you a disservice by clutching my goldsmithing hammer, and we both know Momodi deserves our best." Also I use pre-existing conditions to provide interesting limitations on my character or how he treats other people. Views on IC romance: I think that it can provide an interesting basis, or add a element to a group that can be interesting, not really my cup of tea but I've been a part of some excellent groups that have used it as a driving, or stressor. I think it lends credibility to characters that need a "humanizing" element as long as its touched on the right way. Views on non-romantic RP (family ties, etc): This is my bread an butter, I enjoy creating ties of students/teachers, peers, friends, business partners, one of my most enjoyable RP experiences revolved around myself and a Troll (wow) exploring the emerging scroll market with the addition of inscription. We spend time looking for Herbs around diremaul, haggled with fellow RP'rs for access to their stocks of discount parchment. I (with any luck) will also have my sister joining me which is always the source for some interesting role-play. Views on lore: I try to make a point of ingesting as much as I can from as many sources as I can. I treat official Square published and game events as in world cannon while allowing some of the more interesting fan made content to float around the edges of my mind, I hope to include them when fellow Rpers agree on it but I rarely mind its exclusion. While I tend not to create my own lore I am a prolific writer of nonsense and don't like to miss the chance to speculate on the causes of natural phenomena in the game world. Views on chat functions (/say, /linkshell, etc): I tend to use everything but clearly marked /whisper(ooc) as In character, for me the link pearl is a magically supplemented multi channel radio. I use whispers "say" and "yell" as exclusive In character, using Whisper I'll usually append a public *you see him lean over and whisper to ____" I treat the public group channels (city, zone, camp what have you) as out of character simply because I can't think of a way to rationalize them existing in character. 14. Hello everyone, first time posting here, hope to get to know you all better as the days go by. Below you'll find a bit about me. --MMORPG background I’ve been playing online RPG’s for longer than I would like to admit, my exposure was at best uncensored. I started with UO mostly playing with my sister and our uncle who footed our bill/allowed us to use his computers. EQ was my first in depth time with the genre, again I played alongside my sister, but we were often at odds. EQ was what we were interested in primarily because of its toning down of Pvp, but as I got older my attention turned to this new game on the horizon “world of warcraft” I wasn’t a huge fan of frozen throne preferring Starcraft for my strategy fix, but it was interesting, and that carries us up to the “modern” times. My interest in wow started to wane in Wrath of the Lich king, I dabbled, Rift, SWToR, the Beta for FFXIV 1.0 (which was quite interesting as even at the time I was disappointed in missing out on XI which my uncle had moved to after UO). I played FFXIV lightly, it was mainly my sisters game, (we played on Lindblum/Sargantes) but got more interested in it after I discovered Balmung and we migrated there. I got my Thamturge to 50, met some interesting people, and here we are. --RP experience Roleplaying has been a part of my gaming experience since it started, being as that most of my original experience with classic RPG’s started with Pen and Paper (2nd ED, yay ThAC0~). It really came into its own during EQ, part as a reflective response to people treating me like a child if they had not met my “character” first and part hyper active imagination. My Roleplay in WoW was pretty steady on the Twisting Nether and Steamwheedle Cartel servers. In FFXIV 1.0 Sargantas RP wasn’t really something I did. Being that I hardly played, but after moving to Balmung, while not as active as I would like to become I think that my encounters with the occasional stranger left us both content, if not pleased. --Character ideas/info My plan is to utilize the same character and template from before the descent of Dalamund and utilize looking back into 1.0 as a kind of dream/vision trouble mind set to spur “discovery.” Being as Quarimar was a bookish fellow before, I see him going out into Eorzea comparing his old works against the new world, excitedly penning in changes between the lines and scratching out no longer relevant information. As a note he's a middle aged Duskwight Elezan who works out of Ul'dah, previously I had him documenting minerals and species around some of the more remote camps... not sure how he'll be making his way in the new world. --How did you learn about the coalition? I was a forum lurker of the old site, poking around the linkshell postings such as T.A.L.E --What kind of a role-player are you aiming to be? Light, medium, or heavy? Medium, depending on the people I come to meet, I like to stay in character pretty much all the time, but I make some exceptions for explaining mechanics or interaction in OCC, if I can manage to drag Synndil into this I will likely lean Heavy as we’ve always been a bit competitive (read:working off each other) in our abilities to immerse ourselves in the world. --Anything from real life youâre comfortable with sharing? (Work, school, hobbies, etc) Hrm, not much I’m uncomfortable in sharing, I’m in my 20’s I work in IT for the provincial government, I have a beard, I love history and language. Feel free to ask questions!
