  1. My thread made someone think? I'm not sure if that is awesome or if I should apologize. But to answer the question, I think it would be more accurate to say that he aspires to be like the heroes he's heard about, to follow the examples they set, but he doesn't exactly want to become a legend himself. Sure, he doodles in his journal images of heroic looks (like a signature armor or outlandish disguise) and weapons, and jots down ideas for names of heroic weapons and witty battle phrases, but those are more a fantasy than anything serious. At the end of the day, he's just trying to live his life the way he feels is right.
  2. Well, I wouldn't say my character is completely reasonable. He leans toward the sensible side, but there is still a part of him that wants to emulate the heroes of stories and legends more closely. And even from an OOC viewpoint, I'll admit I keep looking at the Tetsuji Usagi Kabuto helmets and thinking "That would be a great helmet for a hero disguise!". And thank you for all the info, everyone!
  3. I'm sorry if this is a bit of an odd question, and I hope I'm asking in the correct area. Is there any lore about fictional heroes within the setting? I don't mean rumors about existing (living or recently deceased) characters, but something akin to Robin Hood, King Arthur, Hercules and similar characters, although legends of long dead heroes could fit the category in a pinch. Alternately, has anyone created anything like this for use in their RP that they are willing to share? The reason I ask is because I have planned for my character to have a minor obsession with these kinds of characters and stories. He grew up hearing these stories about heroes who helped people and wished to emulate their examples, and even after he was old enough to realize they were fictional (or possibly exaggerated in the case of beings that actually existed) he still wished to follow that dream to some degree. Not in a completely delusional way, but similar to someone in real life that grew up as a fan of superheroes and became a cop, EMT, soldier or other similar profession where they could help people. I'll be honest, I'm fully expecting to have to work something up myself, and I'm okay with that. I've done it in the past and I find it really fun to build a story that takes place within another story. But I'd love to be able to reference any existing lore (official or RP lore alike) if there is any that I just haven't come across yet.
  4. Welcome to the dark side, mwa-ha-ha!! No, I'm mostly kidding. Welcome! Take things easy and don't let the RP intimidate you because it really isn't as hard as some of us make it out to be. It can be, but that all depends on what you want to put into the experience. Some people like to nail down every single detail from birth to present day, some people like to just go with the flow and only have a few bare minimum ideas for the character. Just do what feels comfortable for you.
  5. This really is hard since I have a few ideas that have lyrics, but the only good one I can think of without lyrics is less his "real" theme song and more of a theme for the person he aspires to be. K7VmOZ4Ppj8 His actual theme song would likely be a bit more like this. sgvFpOCBek4
  6. I honestly believe this is what would be seen/heard most of the time if anyone or anything could read my thoughts. 8N_tupPBtWQ That and: "I wish my Green Lantern Ring/Sonic Screwdriver/Lightsaber was real".
  7. *offers hugs to everyone before asking for one* I could definitely use a hug if anyone is offering. On a lighter side, I'm losing hope at being able to slip a new character into Balmung anytime soon. Even the idea of a character transfer isn't reasonable since I don't have a lot of disposable income after bills, med bills, med costs and other things. Tried being up at odd hours (which is easy because I've lost a lot of sleep lately), but still no luck. On a more serious note, I've had a really difficult week due to my health issues. Between intense pain that even my prescription painkiller isn't helping, losing sleep, having an increase in intense panic attacks and a few other things I'd rather not share, I'm just really overwhelmed. It isn't the worst I've ever felt, but I've certainly felt better. Every once in a while, so many things hit at once and they just feel that much more overwhelming than they would individually.
  8. I actually have a few fears for my character, but most of them are completely ridiculous fears based on stories he heard as a child that were merely superstition or just made up entirely by whoever told him the story. He'll slowly overcome some of them, but it won't be an instantaneous change. The humorous part is I'm loosely basing it on my own experiences. I spent a good deal of my youth in and out of hospitals or confined to home, so I never had a chance to realize a lot of what my relatives told me was completely false until I was in my mid teens. Even upon learning that something I feared wasn't what I thought it was, it still took a while for me to drop the fear completely because it was so ingrained.
  9. I started laughing so hard I have tears because I've done the same thing. In a few instances, it led to some really hilarious situations where many people nearby would add on to the "story". To use your example, it would have gone something like: Sally would sashay down the road. "But then she was mauled by a bear." "And the bear got indigestion and died." "Leaving behind three cubs who would grow up to vow revenge on their mother's killer." "Then Sally woke up and realized it was all a dream." "And vowed to never sashay again."
  10. My only real major dislike (I don't want to say "pet peeve" because it sounds like I should be referring to a posh British dog or something) is the "play to win" mentality that often includes metagaming/godmode. I'm also not a fan of excessive shortspeak in RP. I don't mean using abbreviations (like using OJ for orange juice or using the initials of your group and things like that) or if someone sends a quick message while otherwise engaged in an activity that requires focus. I mean when people sit in a safe area and try to carry on extended conversations almost entirely made of "lol ur gr8 2 ikr" and things like that.

  12. That would be a terrible name for a superhero, wouldn't it? Still, I thought it would work for a thread title. Hello! I'm not an entirely new player to FFXIV, but I didn't really get much of a chance to play before being forced to take an extended hiatus (a little over a year, yikes!) due to RL issues so I may as well be. Since I don't really have any characters worth saving (not high level nor have any particularly special items that I can't do without) I'm going to be starting over and learning the ropes once again. As far as I know, none of you would know me as I didn't really make any friends during the brief time I originally played. It wasn't like I was rude or anything like that, I simply kept to myself while trying to learn the game and grouped up a grand total of twice. But I'm hoping to change that this time around! A Little Info About Me My name is Brandon, but most people call me Buddy (my childhood nickname) or Bob (after "Silent Bob" because I often wore a long coat and backwards cap and seemed to get myself into weird situations). I'm 35, a cancer survivor (been in remission for decades, but still have some health issues and complications due to both the cancer itself and some of the treatments), I'm hard of hearing (I can technically hear, but it is bad enough that I'm considered legally deaf) and, if I'm being honest, I'm a bit odd. I'm not trying to be odd, it just seems to happen naturally. I would also like to apologize in advance if I seem a bit chaotic in terms of playtime or being on the forum. Due to some of my health issues as well as the medications I take (including, among others, a painkiller and muscle relaxer for a nerve condition), I don't keep a normal sleep schedule. So one day I may be on at 6 A.M., the next I might not be on until 8 P.M. or so. It isn't always such a drastic difference, but sometimes it cannot be avoided. I try to keep promises if I say I'll be around at a certain time for an event or gathering or group or something like that, but otherwise I just play whenever I'm feeling up to it. A Little Info About My RP History Honestly, I'm not sure what to say or where to begin. I've done a lot of different RP in a lot of different games and other places over the years. I've had characters that I played in EverQuest (and EQ2), City of Heroes, Star Wars Galaxies and so on. I'm by no means an "expert", nor do I expect others to live up to some arbitrary standard (aside from little things like respecting other players or not to godmode other characters without permission and things like that). I just like to have fun and build a story as it comes.
