  1. Sorry for snipping the bulk of the post for space. I can't help but wish you had the time/funds to play one of those because they are all very cool ideas. The cursed sword character might be a bit tricky to play without coming across as cheesy, but I've seen it played very well before. And one of my old gaming friends used to play the information broker type character, so I've always liked seeing that sort of character and seeing where their stories go even if I'm not personally involved because they have a lot of potential for interesting interactions and developments. I'll admit, I REALLY enjoy seeing those kinds of characters (even if my characters usually don't get along with them or their gangs/crews/etc.) since they have a lot of potential for interesting stories and interactions. If you ever change your mind and decide to give one a try, let me know. I might be interested in making an alt to try my hand at playing one of their underlings or something some time down the road.

    SCIENCE.

Welcome! And your character kinda reminds me a bit of how my best friend plays a few of her characters (though she has yet to join us here). The really scary part is she could say something IC that, for all intents and purposes, makes NO sense whatsoever, but for some reason I'll know exactly what she means.
  3. I now am REALLY hoping that my character will make a close Miqo'te friend to insult (you know, the way close friends do to show that they care) just so I'll have a valid reason to use "Laugh it up, fuzzball" in character.
  4. Thank you! Yeah, that does load a bit slow, but I'll give it a look. In a similar vein, there's also this blog that I follow! They reblog pictures of neat glamours and oufits, which is good for the "ideas for outfits" front. Buuut I don't think there's FFXIV equivalent of, say, GW2-fashion or similar, which is really unfortunate. In my time spent playing GW2 I was really spoiled by these types of sites, there were at least two or three at the time. Thank you! And while I've never tried the GW2 site (never got around to getting GW2 yet), I have similarly been a bit spoiled by similar sites for other games. While not fashion related, I frequent EQ2 Decorators quite often for ideas on what to put in my homes (multiple because I got a few of the free premium homes from Veteran Rewards and from loot cards from my free packs of the online TCG).
  5. I apologize if this is in the wrong place. Is there a site or directory that is focused on wearable items in the game, such as how they look, how they are obtained and possibly other information? I realize that I can try on items at the Market Board or vendors and then look them up on various wikis, but I was curious if there might be a place dedicated to wearable items for those of us that might want to get ideas on an RP outfit separate from just wearing whatever is best for our current job/level or for ideas of what we may want to obtain to Glamour.
  6. This isn't far off from how I feel about it. Sure, there are occasional exceptions, but even then there is still only so far I can go. For example, playing an Imperial in "Star Wars Galaxies", I just couldn't bring myself to play the almost stereotypical "humans are better and every other species needs to learn their place" Imperial often seen in other Star Wars media. Or playing certain Elvish races, I may have given them a bit of an arrogant personality, but I couldn't quite pull off the "We are better than you lesser races" attitude that some of the lore or NPCs may have supported. I don't mind if someone wants to play that sort of character (within reason), and I've seen people pull it off fairly well. It just doesn't feel very fun for me personally.
  7. I'll admit that I had no interest in that sort of RP until I played Star Wars Galaxies and got involved with a loose affiliation of guilds that were Imperial and Rebel military organizations. It was simultaneously demanding and rewarding. IC everything was as you would expect, with the Imperials being a pretty strict pro-human military group, and the Rebels operating cells and stuff like that. OOCly, though, everyone got along famously (for the most part). If someone from one faction found a good harvesting spot for good resources, they let the other side know. They even worked together to get some special events with some dev involvement (Darth Vader leading the Imperials in to a PVP battle was fun!).
  8. That is something I've also wanted to RP at some point for quite a few years (not in FFXIV exclusively, but in MMO based RP in general), but MOST games mechanics make it extremely difficult unless you just want to say the kid is at home and never seen within the game. I really don't mind if people do that, but it just isn't something I want to do myself. Closest I've ever come was a group of friends and I started off in one game as a family (parents, the dad's brother and three older teen kids), but that is quite different.
  9. Going to ask for a small hug. I'm having quite a lot of panic attacks lately. Most are unprovoked, but I'm also a little stressed out because I have to switch painkillers. I'm not being put on anything stronger (at least not yet, thankfully), but the painkiller I currently take is being or has already been discontinued. I really, really hate when I have to switch medications (not just painkillers, any medication). It always takes some trial and error to find out if something is going to work without having any major reactions to my other medications or to see if I'm going to have any side-effects or other reactions (such as messing with my liver, aggravating my ulcers or causing migraines for a few examples). I'm trying very, very hard not to think about it, but I've had too many incidents in the past where I ended up hospitalized from reactions that it scares the heck out of me.
  10. I'm actually quite envious of some of the jobs you all have. With all of my health issues, all the medications I'm on and other things, I don't really have a proper career. I just do little odd jobs here and there. It may not allow me to live in "luxury", but while I may not have everything I want, I have what I need. But I spent a few years in my late teens and early 20's homeless, so just having a roof over my head and food to eat makes me feel very, very lucky.
  11. *hugs* I'm so very sorry. Doesn't matter if it is human or animal, losing someone you care about hurts. I know it might not seem like much right now, I hope you'll be able to take some comfort knowing that you gave her a good life.
  12. If I had known the server would be this impossible to get into, I wouldn't have deleted my old characters when I came back at the 1st of the month after over a year away due to RL reasons (they weren't very high level and I just wanted to start fresh after so long away). So I'm just waiting until I have the spare cash to transfer over. It might not seem like much, but with all my med bills, medications costs and such, it just isn't something I have lying around most of the time. I keep hoping I'll get lucky and get in, but after being up well before maintenance ended most times this month in case it ended early and still no luck, I'm not holding my breath. Worst comes to worst, my birthday is in October, so I'll have plenty of time to level up a character on another server until then and use some birthday cash to transfer. Hopefully it won't come to that, but if it does, it does.
  13. I've actually done something like that before, but as short stories rather than actual RP. Most of them were done strictly in a non-canon and humorous way, but I have done a few that were a little more serious in tone. I honestly can't say if they were good or not, and very few have been shared outside my circle of friends, but they were really fun to write.
  14. Him: So, uh... You wanna get hitched? Me: Someday. Him: N.. No, I mean, do you want to marry me? Me: I'm not a minister. But I can ask my brother, he can do it. Or maybe my brother-in-law, he's a preacher. Him: NO! I mean do you want to get married to me! Us! Married to each other! Me: Oh... I'm sorry, but no. Him: Why not? Is it because I'm Hyur? Me: No! Not at all. I'm just not into guys... Well, mostly. I mean, maybe if you were like Jack Harkness from "Doctor Who"... Him: Get me a Fantasia!! Me: Hold on, hold on! Why don't I introduce you to Lance? He's single, and you're more his type. Plus, he's got a really big... Him: DUDE! Me: ...house. He's got a really big house. Him: Oh... Sorry, I thought... Me: Yeah, I know what you thought. Get your mind out of the gutter. Geez!
  15. Oh, that is a good one! Even in games with an extensive set of customization options, that can be really difficult. I've seen far too many interesting and unique characters fade away or killed off because even though they fit the lore of their setting, the customization and character models were too limited (such as a Half Elf that was of a Dark Elf/Human pairing rather than a normal Elf/Human pairing).
  16. Personally, I am one of those people that is almost always in character, even when I'm not really in character (which is not as confusing as it sounds). BUT I don't hold everyone else to this standard. I RP as an escape. I've been sick and disabled for most of my life, I'm in constant pain (even with painkillers), I have a very weak immune system and so on, so I RP as a way to forget, just for a little while, that I'm stuck in this messed up body. It cheers me up, it makes me feel better, it helps keep me from having as many panic attacks and other things. People have lives outside of RP. I've had great RP friends that I saw maybe twice a month, and I've had great RP friends I've seen almost daily. So I think "too much" is subjective. As long as people aren't forgetting there is a person behind the character and that person has a life of their own to live (and that includes with our own characters), then I don't consider it to be too much RP. If people forget there is a person on the other side of a character, then yeah, that is a bit too much.
  17. Since my character has a minor obsession with heroes of folklore, myth and so on, I think the most appropriate Super Sentai team to draw from would be Gokaiger. So for the henshin theme music, I'll have to go with the the Gokai Change music. 0J506MN320M And since he's into various kinds of heroes, the second question will have more than one answer (like how some Gokai Changes are a combo of the normal Gokai Change and the team they are changing into's henshin/roll call or how the Gokaigers could change into Kamen Riders and Metal Heroes in the Super Hero Taisen films). ewRCSNDF08I 6iejNkFoKB0 Unfortunately, I don't have any images of possible outcomes, but sticking to the Gokaiger theme, there would likely be several (even if they are just dyed versions of roughly the same armor appearance, or different armors from different jobs dyed to match each other).
  18. Even though we don't really know each other yet, I'm glad to hear she's doing well and I hope she has a swift recovery. I'll keep your family in my thoughts (because even though she's the one who is ill, I know all too well from both sides how stressful it can be on family and friends when someone we care about is unwell). If you would like, I'll ask my brother-in-law to say a prayer for her during his church service tomorrow as he's a preacher. If not, that is fine, I just don't want to ask without your permission since not everybody feels comfortable with that sort of thing.
  19. I wanted to play against my usual choices. If there is a choice in a game, I almost always choose any race other than the humans. In EverQuest and EverQuest II, the majority of my characters were Dark Elves, though in EQ2 I grew really attached to both of the fairy races (and recently the Aerakyn). The few brief times I tried WoW, I played a Dwarf, both Elves, an Orc and a Pandaren (my friend bought me the expansion and wanted us to RP siblings) as well as trying out a Goblin and a Worgen. In Second Life, I have way too many avatars to list, but aside from a few freebies, I've only ever purchased a grand total of THREE human skins (and two of those were to match some elf ears). Everything else is either an unnatural tone (like blue or green) or is otherwise non-human (catpeople, demons, a few custom modified furry avatars, even some avatars inspired by known fictional alien races like Twi'lek or Andorian). I wasn't planning on choosing a Hyur. I was actually pretty set against it, with my original plan being either Lalfell, Miqo'te or Au Ra. But the more I thought of who and what I wanted my character to be, the more I thought that this time it might be interesting to play a human character for a change. I have played human characters in the past, but rarely ever in a fantasy setting. I do plan to make one or two of my other characters that I had originally planned at some point, but for now I'm enjoying the experience of trying something different.
  20. But even a "crappy" GM can be hilariously entertaining. If an idiot like me can do it (my descriptions went on and on and all over the place like a rambling Grampa Simpson story), I'm sure you would do much better.
  21. This thread was inspired by a conversation with a few friends over the last few days and is a general question, not FFXIV specific. A friend of mine in another game was trying to recruit me to an RP guild she is in. However, the guild's theme is that they are all vampires or in some way connected to vampires (minions, waiting to be turned, etc.). Now I will admit I'm borderline obsessed with vampires. I have numerous books that are about vampires, vampire folklore, books that describe different "breeds" of vampire in various other books, vampire like creatures in various cultures and so on, one of my favorite TV series of all time is "Forever Knight" about an 800 year old vampire working as a homicide detective, I have my own fangs and much, much more. When I declined, she was quite surprised. I just can't do it. I've done it before, and I may do it again at some point, but right now I'm completely burned out on vampires in RP. That isn't to say that I despise people that RP vampires, and there are some really amazing players that have build truly unique vampire characters, but it feels a bit overdone to me. When some other friends found out and asked me why (or, more humorously, asked if I was feeling okay), it made me think about what else I like but would currently not or may never RP. - Jedi or Sith. As much as I adore Star Wars, the idea of playing a Jedi has never appealed to me. While playing a Sith is more attractive, I'm still not all that interested. I don't mind playing a low-level Force sensitive individual (such as someone who feels an empathic connection to animals), but I'd much rather RP a Mandalorian, smuggler, Imperial soldier, cantina worker or multiple other things. - Evil characters. I love a good fictional villain and I really don't mind playing a bad guy. Heck, playing a bad guy is pretty fun! But there are various layers of "bad", and I can only go so far. I would much rather play a character of moral ambiguity rather than someone who kicks kittens just for the heck of it. I would rather play someone with the mindset of Magneto or Darth Vader, someone who is bad but is bad for a somewhat valid reason, such as an honest belief that they are working towards the greater good or that is seeking revenge for some perceived wrong that they or someone they cared about suffered. - "Superman" level superheroes. I may be a bit of a hypocrite since I played a Green Lantern character in an RP for several years, but I usually prefer characters that aren't essentially unbeatable. Where is the fun in that? Even my GL character had a lower powered ring (based on the rings that GL John Stewart gave some kids in the comic series "Green Lantern: Mosaic", which allowed force fields, language translation and flight, but weren't on par with the rings worn by actual members of the Green Lantern Corps). I also played an alternate reality version of Superboy at one point, but his power levels were much, much lower (closer to Captain America than Superman in terms of strength and other abilities, not invulnerable and could leap long distances but not actually fly). There has to be some challenge for the character. An unbeatable character can be challenging and fun to write, but it is harder for me to relate to a character like that. - Time Lords. Similar to the above situation, I have had a Gallifreyan character, but I didn't actually play a Time Lord (not everyone from Gallifrey is a Time Lord, such as the more tribal Outsiders). However, it isn't that I find the idea boring, I just worry I'll grow too attached to a specific personality and have trouble changing if a regeneration ever came about. I would much rather play a character in the vein of the Doctor's companions, someone who isn't likely to have a "get out of dying free" card. Or someone with the personality (and possibly the good looks) of Jack Harkness. - Asian girls. I have absolutely no problem playing a female character. But I won't play a girl who looks to be of Asian descent for one simple reason: I'd never get anything done because I'd just keep staring at my character and thinking she's gorgeous.
  22. I see it going something like this. First, we'll have a massive geek-out, with him telling me all about the mythical heroes he likes and I'll tell him about superheroes and such that I enjoy or that inspired me. Then we would compare scars (his from combat, mine from surgeries and such from during my treatment for cancer) and explain why we've given certain scars their own nicknames. Then to top it all off, massive candy binge.
  23. I don't think there is a specific physique my character likes. That isn't to say he doesn't find certain traits to be more attractive than others, but it is less a specific body type (like skinny or tall or whatever) and more of an overall appearance. A lady could be short, tall, skinny, plus-sized and any other size and shape, just as long as she doesn't look like she's not at least trying to take care of herself. A girl with a high metabolism or a girl who just can't afford to eat luxuriously is going to be a lot more attractive than a girl who starves herself on purpose, for example. Oddly, though, he's least attracted to his own people (Midlanders). Not to say he can't be attracted to them, but he's more likely to swoon over a Highlander or Roegadyn lady.
  24. Don't really have any here yet except for finding out just how awesome other players in the game can be. It is almost like a never-ending best OOC moment when people continue to surprise you and are almost NOTHING like the players you grew used to expecting in some other games. One of my best MMO moments is a combo IC and OOC moment. Back in the days of Star Wars Galaxies, I remember sitting around the Mos Eisley Cantina waiting for my friends to log in. I was playing my character Daxter Jex, being sociable with the entertainers and passerby, when somebody I'd never met came in and sat down in full Tusken Raider gear. I don't know if this person is playing a character or just OOC, so I leave him be. After a while he starts chatting to some girl (can't think of her name offhand, she was part of an Entertainer guild I knew, but I wasn't close with her) and speaking in-character that he's a Tusken Raider. Then came the kicker where he offered to show her his face, which is taboo in Tusken Raider culture but the player didn't know that. So I change my speech to whispering and say to him in-character "Dude, nice pickup line. But be careful, if you tried that on a native they might know you're a fraud since showing your face is taboo in Tusken Raider culture. It isn't common knowledge, but be careful all the same". The kid sent me a tell OOCly "OH MAN!! I didn't know about that! I was going to RP a Tusken, but now I've messed up!" I calmed him down and told him it wasn't a problem, then we got to talking about Star Wars in general and just being big geeks. I invited him to come along with my friends and I just to see if anyone could offer him some tips since he decided not to RP a Tusken after all. He decided to reroll a Wookiee, and we got him all set up with Wookiee clothing and a nice Bowcaster as well as a home and speeder and everything. After that, without even realizing it at first, I'd ended up with my new partner in crime. We were like Han and Chewie meets Laurel and Hardy in character, and OOC we were just as inseparable. Although we've never met face to face, he remains someone I consider one of my closest friends to this day.
  25. There are several breaking points for my character, all varying levels at just how bad they would break him. But I think the most damaging one would be if he remembers his former life. To some degree, he's already broken down. His memory begins the day he woke up in the home of his adoptive parents at a young age (roughly 10 to 13 years old). The healers believe his memory loss is due to the state he was found in, nearly dead with badly infected wounds, a dangerously high fever, massive blood loss and so on, but that is only partially correct. He also barely survived an extremely traumatic ordeal that his young mind couldn't cope with. Between the ordeal and the near brush with death, he can't really remember anything before the day he woke up, and all he knows is the reasonably happy life he's lived since then. If he ever remembered before that point in any great detail, it would likely shatter his sanity. Perhaps not irreparably, but it would still be pretty bad. And yes, I'm being deliberately vague about the traumatic experience. Don't want to spoil it since I plan to write what happened to him as a story at some point. To a lesser degree, he would also break if he ever found proof that his sister is dead. She's missing and presumed dead, but he holds out hope that she's still alive somewhere out there. Also, I'm OOCly holding out hope that a friend will be joining us eventually to play her (she's very interested, but currently doesn't have the free time or the funds to justify a paid subscription game). Depending how that turns out, there may or may not come a day where he learns she's gone and breaks down for a while. It may not be quite as bad as the other thing, but it would still hurt him badly enough that he would seem almost like a different person.
