  1. This is a really unique, innovative, and long-over due idea. I'll keep this in mind for future RP's!
  2. This is a fun thread. Sigurd is stupidly extroverted. Upon Sigurd spotting a blonde woman or effeminate blonde male, "...Gods, I do not believe I've ever met your acquaintance before, allow me to introduce myself. Sund-ste-i-gen. Sigurd. Sig. A pleasure." Upon spotting some haggard soul, "You, ser, appear to be in dire need of a smoke. Oh? I don't mind sharing my pipe one bit. I advise taking a single sharp toke, holding the smoke in deep, counting to ten, and then exhaling like an angry dragon. The rush to the head will make your day." Everyone is a potential customer, "...Do you know what you need, my good lady? A novel new means of conveying goods. Close your eyes and picture this - it's a dreary weekday at home, but suddenly a knock sounds, prompting you to answer the door. You find a case of fine wine shipped to you directly. Now, I know you're eyes are closed, but you're not dreaming - this is all within your fingertips: simply fill out this purchase form, and I'll take care of the rest." Is that a Great Sword or are you happy to see me? "...You know, I've never quite understood the obsession with carrying a lance and wearing full plate in a tavern of all places, unless you came 'directly from the office.' A bit over-dressed, I say." I don't have a drinking problem. "...Be a dove and fetch that broad standing against the pillar a glass of wine, would you fine waitress? Wait. No. A decanter for the entire table. I'll wave her over myself."
  3. I've always pictured Sigurd as a slightly younger, taller, and heavier Iain Glen:

November 24, 2015 Pre-Thanksgiving Update: We've grown to a healthy 90 members from a variety of FC's! We enjoy the company of some of the most entertaining and witty RP'ers on the server, and are always happy to invite anyone interested. I'm out of town on vacation from Nov. 25-29, 2015. Feel free to send me RPC messages with any questions during this time!
  5. Oh thank goodness. I was so busy that I thought I missed it! Will be there with some form of bells on! Great! Looking forward to it. Feel free to send me a message in-game for an invite via mail.
  6. Based on the concept art, I've always envisioned Gyr Albania as fairly temperamental in low-lying regions (regions at altitude near city) but cold at higher elevations (mountain depicted in background) and during colder months.
  7. We all gravitate towards roleplay that is consistent with our own style and preferences. There is nothing wrong about this. It is unfortunate, however, when a preference or style turns into a "standard," which closes the door to many potentially valuable forms of roleplay and scenes.
  8. I wanted to make this thread after reviewing numerous posts made in multiple threads where roleplayers have drawn negative assumptions and judgments about other roleplayers. We are all guilty of doing this from time to time. It is common for role-players to draw assumptions and judge each other for a variety of reasons. Common examples include assessing role-players based on their: (1) post length, grammatical structure, or word-choice; (2) decisions regarding character aesthetics; (3) common themes in RP, including comedy, drama, and horror; (4) disposition towards violent or erotic content in RP; and (5) beliefs regarding the stringency of lore-compliance. These are only a few examples. I am of the belief that role-players should strive to keep open minds and find as much value in as many forms of role-play as possible. It is amazing how some of the best role-players I know exhibit completely different RP styles, content preferences, and beliefs on lore-compliance. The sign of a good role-player is not adherence to any particular value, but instead the ability to create dynamic, interesting content in real-time. Most people who role-play possess this skill and utilize it to create their own unique form of RP, which brings them personal enjoyment. There is value to be found any genuine style of role-play, as it is the product of creativity and imagination. We should always keep in mind that other role-players are spending scarce, valuable time from their busy lives to engage in what amounts to a collaborative creative writing exercise. We should always appreciate the efforts and interests others show in role-playing for this reason. With this in mind, it is not our place to judge or assume things about other role-players based on their valid preferences or styles. The only exception to this is when a person roleplays intentionally to harass or annoy other roleplayers (which is very rare). We should look to learn from and adapt to different RP preferences and styles in the vast majority of settings. The next time you find yourself drawing a negative assumption or judgment about a roleplayer or their preferences consider keeping an open mind. The role-player posting snippy one-to-two line dialogue might spout off some of the wittiest lines you've heard in weeks. A character purporting to be a voidsent might serve as a horrifying, wonderful antagonist. A scantily-clad Miqo'te flirting in the Quicksand might have an incredibly well-written backstory. The possibilities are endless, so keep the door open.

Absolutely! We still have plenty of space for more great RP'ers. The LS offers both IC and OOC connections for RP. We'd be happy to have you aboard. Please send me or Khana Borlaaq a tell in-game for an invite.
  10. My main character sometimes uses contemporary profanity as if it were candy. Contemporary profanity with some historical context amounts to little more than a plausible stretch of lore. Many have posted examples of profanity found in the game, and it is safe to assume that there would be additional profane terms used by NPCs if the publisher did not insist upon a "T" rating. The /vast/ majority of RP'ers I've observed using profanity do so in a tasteful manner. Many characters come from unsavory or morally deviant backgrounds. It is not surprising that those characters use profanity. If anything, the complete absence of profanity can sometimes detract from immersion in many contexts, as such terms are fairly common in real life and fantasy settings.
  11. The Most "Pious" Bonding Ceremony of Sigurd Sundsteigen and Khana Borlaaq OOC Information: Summary: Khana Borlaaq and Sigurd Sundsteigen will be bonded in a ceremony thrown by their employer, Septimus Rem ("Nero Varus") Nerva. The ceremony and reception is open to any RP'ers looking to have a fun time! The ceremony will start off with excessively formal and extravagant overtones but gradually devolve into drunken debauchery. Anyone interested in participating in this IC ceremony and reception is invited to attend, especially characters who have met Sigurd, Khana, Nero, or any of their mutual in-game acquaintances. Ceremony attendees will receive the demon box minion gift. Please post below or contact Sigurd Sundsteigen or Khana Borlaaq in-game for invites. Invites will also be handed out prior to the event. Some of the content may be tastefully mature, so viewer discretion is advised. Date, Time, and Location: December 2, 2015 at 7:00 PM, PST - Temple of the Twelve, East Shroud Affiliates: Pending formal confirmation, Wayfarers of Eorzea will be hosting the reception. If your free company or link shell would like to participate, please let us know! Currently Seeking: We hope the ceremony can serve as a means for members of the RP community to make connections while having a great time in-character. We're currently seeking additional IC entertainers, bouncers, performers, and guests (especially rowdy ones)! IC Information: When "former" Garlean Centurion Septimus Nerva learned that his business partner (Sigurd Sundsteigen) and company doctor (Khana Borlaaq) were to be bonded, the stoic man became replete with nostalgia and emotion. Septimus instantly recalled the magnificent Garlean bonding ceremonies he had attended during his youth decades ago. Memories of flowers strewn about long marble halls, columns of standard-bearing legates clad in dress uniform, and centurions wearing elaborate white officiant's robes brought a tear of joy to his third eye. Eorzean bonding ceremonies, on the other hand, were a "joke." It was past time for Garlean cultural outreach. Septimus instantly lectured the couple over a public link pearl channel (Amesoeurs) about the necessity of a traditional bonding ceremony. He explained the tremendous beauty, historical significance, and importance of exchanging sacred vows. Septimus insisted on organizing the ceremony and paying for all related expenses. This shocked most listeners, as the "former" Garlean usually showed minimal emotion. Sigurd and Khana accepted Septimus' unexpected and gracious offer. Perhaps Septimus saw the ceremony as an opportunity to sway the notoriously hedonistic couple from their "perverse and deviant" ways. Or maybe he desired to introduce Eorzeans to the pageantry and magnificence of a traditional Garlean bonding ceremony. His motives would remain a mystery. The date, time, and scope of the ceremony, however, soon became public knowledge. Septimus initiated a propaganda campaign to alert the public to what he hoped would be the a traditional, beautiful ceremony worthy of Garlemald. He arranged for third-parties to litter every major Eorzean settlement with fliers describing the date, location, time, and theme of the ceremony. The promotional materials featured subtle Garlean imagery and promised a sacred night to remember. Despite Septimus' grand intentions, a shadow loomed over the ceremony. Those who knew Sigurd and Khana understood that their dispositions were far from pious, formal, holy, or proper.
  12. Compliance officials and similar business-oriented vocations are extremely reasonable and under-played professions. There is a wealth of unique RP to be found in such roles, as it adds depth and makes the setting of the game far more believable. The OP's background will probably help her make inspection-related scenes appear very believable. Definitely go for it!
  13. I should be able to attend this event and would like to register Sigurd Sundsteigen as a performer. Thanks for hosting these events. Looking forward to it!
  14. Forgive the thread necromancy, but Ala Mhigan characters are fascinating and deserving of a bump. I'll throw my character into the mix. Personal Profile Character Name: Sigurd Sundsteigen Gender: Male Race: Hyur (Highlander) Age: 35 Domestic Profile Civil Status: Engaged Place of Residence: Wineport; Lavender Beds Occupation: Vintner and "Entrepreneur" Free Company: Ebonbrand Teknoworks Social Profile Sigurd is outgoing, friendly, and pretentious on the surface. Although Sigurd spent his youth in Ala Mhigo and Little Ala Mhigo, he despises Ala Mhigan nationalism and culture, as it contributed to his traumatic childhood. Sigurd perceives individuals who seek to restore Ala Mhigo as fundamentally misguided and ignorant of the nation's violent history. Despite these traits, he possesses a deeply personal understanding of the suffering Ala Mhigans endured, and wants to see them "move on" with their lives. See wiki linked below for more information. Meta Profile Sigurd committed countless atrocities in service of Rhalgr before Garlemald crushed Ala Mhigo. He believes Ala Mhigo's fall was a form of poetic justice. Meeting Ala Mhigans is one of the few things that almost instantly cracks his superficial facade. He feels a very close kinship to individuals from Ala Mhigo, but becomes extremely upset if they harbor positive opinions about the country. See wiki linked below for more information.
  15. It looks fun, but I'm likely waiting 6-12 months to allow time for bug fixes, mods, and DLC materials. Plus it's hard to peel away from FFXIV because RP has been so much fun lately!
  16. I'll offer a slightly different perspective than those offered by numerous other great RP'ers who've posted in this thread. This post is refreshing and reveals what appeared to be a skilled role-player looking for friends and tasteful roleplay in an FC setting. It is an assertive, interesting way to put one's character on the market. I do not interpret the OP's post as clamoring for attention. There is nothing wrong with wanting to inform the community that your character is basically 'looking for work.' In addition, joining a FC through purely IC interactions can be extremely exciting. However, as many have said, the OP should consider networking and actively pursuing potential FCs that appear to be a good fit. This approach is more likely to produce a desirable result for the OP, as he has greater control over the FC's he targets. He can more appropriately tailor his selection of potential FCs to those that share similar RP styles and content preferences. Personally, I do not have any opinions regarding the lore compliance or background of the OP's character. It is within the realm of plausibility. However, my character (Sigurd) would find the notion of a good-natured, child-looking lalafell purporting to be a dragoon absolutely preposterous, as would many other characters.
  17. I've shed a few manly tears of joy from particularly cute and touching scenes before, but I have never cried out of sorrow in response to a scene. Several scenes I have RP'ed, however, have left me extremely emotionally drained or stressed, but those scenes were absolutely amazing for that very reason, .
  18. Generally, I enjoyed reading your post, Lucy, and respectfully disagree with certain portions. I consider you a great roleplayer and respect where you are generally coming from, but I'll highlight a few minor thoughts below: RP is obscenely subjective to the point there is very rarely "bad roleplay" or "bad roleplayers," unless it borders on the verge of being incomprehensible, trollish in nature, or violates fundamental RP etiquette (godmoding/meta/etc. Individual RP'ers, however, can possess valid personal preferences regarding the style and content of RP they enjoy. There is nothing wrong about devoting more time and energy to roleplaying with individuals who share your style and content preferences. In my view, it's more about spending time with RP you find personally enjoyable than avoiding RP with "bad roleplayers." Even then, it is beneficial to RP with individuals with different styles and content preferences from time to time, as it inspires creativity and promotes better writing. The vast majority of roleplayers are good roleplayers, irrespective of their styles. Some of the best roleplayers I know rarely post over 3 lines. Others post multiple paragraphs. Some RP "at me." Some I RP "at." It all depends on the characters at issue. I usually employ a paragraph style of roleplay that emphasizes atmosphere, dialogue, and emotion. Some people dislike that style, and I respect their preference. A common trait of excellent roleplayers is the ability to anticipate, accept, and promote valid hooks, irrespective of individual RP style. Sometimes minimizing the involvement of certain characters in group scenes is a sad and necessary evil for both OOC and IC reasons. It can be exceptionally difficult reacting to all members of a group roleplay equally do to time, length, and post order restraints. I generally perceive that each roleplayer in a group has the burden of injecting hooks and facilitating their own participation. With this said, I agree it is good form to throw out as many hooks and promote involvement where possible. See answers to specific questions below in red: - How do you handle these situations? Are you patient? Absolutely. It is important to show great patience in roleplay and try to make RP partners enjoy scenes as much as possible without completely butchering character integrity. - Am I a little too ungrateful? I shouldn't ask for 'that much' from people? Characters who act like brick walls sometimes serve a valid purpose and are skillfully roleplayed in that capacity. You may want to consider changing how you perceive of interacting with such characters. I believe you should always be thankful and grateful to someone who is taking time out of their life to share in collaborative writing with you, regardless of how enjoyable that writing may be. With that in mind, there are many valid OOC and IC reasons to prefer RPing with certain individuals or characters. On an OOC level, it may be because an RP'er is more perceptive to hooks and has a similar style. On an IC level, the personality of the character can often be used to justify prioritization of roleplay. Sigurd, for example, tends to grow extremely bored and wander off if characters fail to hold his attention. - How do you make sure your RP never runs out of 'meat'/material to play with? Do you bring in new items, like a Limsan axe? (I personally like to give my characters different moods from time to time, headcanon happenings, to get new things to discuss. Though the previous RPs I had with other characters are usually enough) I've never ran into this problem, personally. I find that an easy way to fill content gaps is to introduce other players and characters, and RP in a group dynamic. It adds a really interesting level to the RP. With that said, I sometimes add new quirk's or plot device material to Sigurd to fill in gaps. But other RP'ers, first and foremost, drive most of my content. - Got RP standards? What are they? What do you want/expect from people RPing with you? One primary standard - I hope people who RP with me are having a fun time, no matter if the scene is comedic, murderous, or mundane. Other than that, I have basic RP etiquette standards (no godmode/meta/etc), and do not expect much else. The only other expectation is a decent responsive posting time. However, I do enjoy (and prioritize) RPing with people who share similar RP styles and content preferences. But in the end, almost all RP is enjoyable RP.

October 2015 Update: What a lovely month! Our LS remains a great RP resource! It is full of friendly and talented RP'ers who enjoy tasteful, amazing roleplay of all sorts of variety. Clever OOC banter has become more common in the LS too! If interested, please message me, or send Sigurd Sundsteigen or Khaana Borlaaq a tell in-game! We're happy to extend invites to RP'ers and are open to fairly flexible IC invitations (i.e. - find pearl in Ul'Dah, etc).

October 2015 Update: After RL vacations and a flurry of work-related obligations, Ebonbrand Teknoworks resumed RP operations in late October 2015. We now own real property (a gorgeously decorated small FC house) located in Lavender Beds and are diving back into RP head-first. If you're like to join our merry band of engineers, adventurers, monster hunters, and [[TOP SECERET -- covert Garlean loyalists/sympathizers (...and the poor saps who follow out of friendship or obligation *cough cough*)]], please feel free to PM me, or message Nero Varus, Skylar Brooks, or Sigurd Sundsteigen in-game!
  22. Sigurd discovered the article pasted on a market board outside the Quicksand and studied it closely with utter delight gleaming in his eyes. "Ama-teuuuurs," he muttered in slurred speech, alcohol leeching from his breath after a night of binge drinking. Laughing Armaments had become a pesky business rival in the Magitek armament industry. It had a terrible habit of creating innovative new products that drove down both the demand and price of comparable Magitek weapons manufactured by Ebonbrand Teknoworks. The news regarding Laughing Armaments' "unfortunate" loss of proprietary Magitek trade secrets was an unexpected pleasure. Sigurd mocked the purported statements of Laughing Armaments' President, muttering: "Th-thu-this act 'goes against progress?" He then embarked on the following long-winded drunken tirade: "This is, hic, an act of great progress, hic, and f-fabulous news! Gonna cor-corner the market now! Ole' Lo-hengrin is gonna be shitting himself and licking his wounds for weeks! Time to flood the market with our Magitek shit and price them into the ground! M-must find who did this and give them a few bottles of wine on the house!" Sigurd mumbled a few more thoughts about finding the saboteurs, purchasing the prototypes at low cost, modifying the design, and then selling the similar product at inflated prices. Unfortunately, a nagging high-pitched voice barked at him through the small link-pearl in his ear, lecturing him to "return home this instant." Although his new "home" in Gridania lacked the bustle of Ul'Dah, at least Gridania's lavender beds had lower crime rates in a pleasant wooded setting.
