Roleplaying in Public, but not..in public?
Lydia Lightfoot replied to Michikyou's topic in RP Discussion
Entirely unfair, because that's pretty much the same as them saying "Oh, you witnessed a crime in a public place in real life and you found that unsettling? Guess you should go around everywhere with a blindfold on, huh." Nobody should have to - and nobody is going to - deactivate their /say and /emote channels. -
Roleplaying in Public, but not..in public?
Lydia Lightfoot replied to Michikyou's topic in RP Discussion
Just to play devil's advocate a moment... a coffee shop isn't a private space, and in my experience at least - as a person who randomly interacts with people because I have no sense of social decorum - people tend not to be offended if someone nearby chimes in on their conversation (or if they preferred not to have someone join in, I've literally never had someone get shitty toward me, they just politely excuse themselves and leave the not-private coffee shop to go find somewhere actually-private to continue their conversation). More to the point, this also depends severely on the topic at hand. If two moms are at said coffee shop discussing how well their kids are doing in little league, that's a harmless enough sort of topic and they're unlikely to object at all if someone chimes in with some relevant anecdote about their own kid or their own experience in little league when they were younger (obviously, butting into the discussion with a comment totally unrelated would not go over well, of course). However, if it's three people talking about the house they just got done burgling and how they're going to pawn everything to buy meth, who gives a damn if they'd be offended by someone jumping into that discussion, because the topic at hand is one which is apparently alarming to those outside of the conversation. So to translate that into an RP circumstance, if some people are roleplaying on the street in Ul'dah and collectively emoting how they're beating the crap out of another character, and said character is obviously outmatched and hasn't apparently done anything wrong, and I choose to have my character join the fray, those players have no right to object to it. They're roleplaying something which would be naturally alarming to passersby, and they're doing said roleplay openly. If they can't handle random participants joining in, maybe they shouldn't be publicly roleplaying a topic which begs random participants to join in. -

Reliquarian's Guild «Relic»
Lydia Lightfoot replied to Lydia Lightfoot's topic in (Antiquated) Free Company Hall
Member recruiting status: Always open! Staff recruiting status: OPEN We're in need of staff characters with active players who want to make some new friends and help us get off the ground as a great community resource! Opportunities are available for officer positions once a player's been involved awhile and shown me the kind of person they are. -
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read about us! The Reliquarian's Guild is an unorthodox "free company which isn't a free company" concept. OOC, it's definitely a free company since it uses the game mechanics relevant to a free company, but IC, it's not a free company at all! It's a guild, along the lines of the other guilds which exist in the game, such as the Gladiator's Guild and the Thaumaturge's Guild. There's a problem with the use of an FC as a guild, though, which is that any character in any FC could become a member of the Arcanist's Guild, but if only those in this FC could be members it, then that's not really representative of the concept of what guilds are in the world of Final Fantasy 14. Thus, for the sake of this group, we're going to use the term staff to define those who bear the «Relic» tag and are a part of the free company construct, and member will instead refer to those who are members of the IC guild but not employees of the guild. Think along the lines of those NPCs you see standing around the guild halls in-game. They're staff of those guilds, and your character who belongs to whatever FC you choose is a member of that guild. We hope that makes sense! What does it mean to be a member of the Reliquarian's Guild? Members have access to the guild hall, which is located on the second floor of The Reliquarium, located in the Lavender Beds, Ward 12, #41, in the Southwest Subdivision. Technically, anybody's character can wander right on in, since there's no way to actually prevent it, but, IC, only members (or guests accompanying members) are allowed to go onto that floor. And getting into the guild hall means...? In addition to excellent library and research resources, the guild hall has facilities in place for experimentation and repair of artifacts, planning of treasure hunting and exploration activities, and includes access to the auditorium for educational gatherings and seminars, as well as access to the loft where members can relax. Members may also make use of the astroscope and martial training areas in the courtyard of the building, as well as the indoor training room (perfect for inclement weather) and the onsen (for relaxation or washing up). Lastly, members of the guild get a discount on food and drink served at Bistro Le Beau on the ground floor of the building. Okay, so being a member is mostly just IC access to things for RP? Pretty much. It does also mean networking opportunities with other member characters and their players, which is great for players who want to expand their social group and make some new friends. The guild will be running some events and providing RP hooks for others to make use of if they choose, so think of it like a catalyst for possible RP. How is the networking accomplished? A linkshell? Nope! We'd considered a linkshell, but linkshells are very limited in customization and the number of potential characters that can be included. Though the linkshell would be OOC, if a player wanted alts in the linkshell, it could run out of room very quickly even with just a couple dozen players. Instead, we have a Discord server set up which players will need to join in order to socialize OOC with other players who have characters that are members of the guild. It's used for text only (no voice chat), and allows us to have some conveniences like an event announcement channel. Most importantly, the sky's the limit on users, so we'll never have an awkward time where we have to consider kicking infrequently-played characters out of a linkshell. We'll never have to boot a player off the Discord for being quiet. I refuse to use out-of-game resources for socialization with other players! You're currently using one right now to read this, chummer. Also, Discord is about as anonymous as it gets, so we're not buying it that someone's excuse is a privacy concern or something along those lines. What if I just really don't want to sign up for Discord, but I want my character to be a member of the Reliquarian's Guild? Sorry, no exceptions. The Discord is the primary way members of the guild will be communicating about activities relevant to the guild. There's not going to be a linkshell, and there may not always be a message here on the RPC, particularly if the activity is something spontaneous. Not joining the Discord would more or less make membership in the guild pretty meaningless. You realize I could sign up for the Discord, and then just quit it once I'm a member, right? Yes, except that the Discord list is the member list, so... we'll let you figure that one out, since you have all the answers. If anyone's wondering what the heck they're reading, we're just preemptively addressing what we figure will be some common questions. Basic FAQ type stuff, except that nobody's actually asked these questions yet, so the "FA" part is a bit... well, anyway. Interested in your character becoming a member? Awesome! It's as easy as joining the Discord server. The link to join is tiny.cc/relicdiscord - please say hello when you join up, and let us know the name of your character who has signed up to be a member of the guild (we'll edit your nickname to represent that character - if you want to have more than one alt sign up, that's fine, just let us know which one we're likely to see most frequently, since we're likely to end up knowing you as the one we see the most often). Is your character FC-less and potentially looking at «Relic» as a home? Check out the Join the Staff tab for details. Want to know a little about our existing members? Preview your future friends on the Cast of Characters tab. And if you're hoping we have somewhere nice for general RP, you won't be disappointed by our very own Bistro Le Beau, which you can read about on the tab by the same name. Want to link back to this page? Use tiny.cc/relicrpc to make it easy. We hope to enjoy some RP with you soon, in whatever form it comes! Have an awesome day!

Roleplaying in Public, but not..in public?
Lydia Lightfoot replied to Michikyou's topic in RP Discussion
A lot of people don't use the search info or RP tag very effectively. Case in point: me. I never use the RP tag because I dislike that the kerning of the icon butts it up right against the start of my character's name, instead of giving a few pixels' space. It's totally idiotic of me that it bothers me, but yet it does, and so I don't use it out of some futile silent protest. Anyway. As some of the other said, if it's in /say and /em then that's basically the same as advertising public acceptance, because nothing is stopping them from using /p if they prefer privacy. So jump right on in, and don't ask permission in advance, because again, nothing is stopping them from using /p. You'll get one of, probably... four? Four outcomes. 1. They're cool with it and you get some RP. Score! 2. They aren't actually interested in you joining in, but they'll humor you with a post or two before making it fairly clear via their RP that their characters have no intention of actually engaging in a meaningful way. It's a bit of a passive aggressive approach on their part (versus them just OOCly saying they'd prefer to not have someone join in), but you'll "get the hint" and move on, eventually (or they'll leave, or, escalate to #3 or #4) 3. They'll politely mention OOCly that their scene is intended to be a closed scene. Maybe they have a good reason (e.g. they're using the location as a proxy for somewhere else, such as people often do on the ship at Costa Del Sol), or maybe they have no reason at all, but it doesn't really matter. If they're not cool with it they're not cool with it. Onward with your day. 4. They'll be total shits about it OOCly and make a big dramatic outburst about how you're rude for walking up, for presuming they want to RP with you, blah blah blah. You know what, don't even get mad if this happens. They just did you a huge favor by revealing the kind of angry, negative people that they are, and now you're free to carry on finding RP with other roleplayers who can play nice. -
Roleplaying in Public, but not..in public?
Lydia Lightfoot replied to Michikyou's topic in RP Discussion
^ This. This for days. They want the social and immersive world, but only when they want it to be, or, when it serves to enhance their own experience and advance their own goals. That said, it's important to remember that roleplayers come in all experience levels as players, and someone like you or me might look at the game world and think... "If I'm IC and you can make your character exist in the same zone/area my character is in, then feel free to interact with mine and react/respond to my RP. You don't need an invitation any more than you would need to be invited to say hi to someone you see at the grocery store IRL" ...but for someone with less experience, they may not be able to handle reacting/improvising so swiftly to an unexpected variable in their intended situation. So if someone presents an objection to a rando coming into their scene, it may very well just be that the player is new and not quite ready to have to shake things up on-the-fly. However, on the other hand (bouncing back and forth here), the game world does have a ton of locations which are "off the beaten path" where players who are new and feeling a bit timid could go take their pals to do some RP which would be "in a public space" yet rather unlikely to be noticed by anyone or attract wandering participation. In that sense, it falls upon the player who wishes to bubble their scene to ensure they're doing said scene in a way which doesn't invite curiosity. Another option they could do is to keep the posting for the RP inside of a party chat, so that even though the characters are right on the street in Ul'dah it becomes impossible for anyone to overhear and intervene in their affairs (though, bouncing again, ideally if they go that route they should have some sort of explanation afoot in their scene as to why there's weirdly nobody around on the open street in a major city...). -
Free Company & Personal House Listing

Balmung - LB 12:41 (SW Sub) The Reliquarium - featuring: Bistro Le Beau at The Reliquarium (floor 1) - a fine dining restaurant featuring creative plates with exotic tastes, and an ornate stage for talented performers. The Reliquarian's Guild Headquarters (floor 2) - a guild for treasure hunters; think along the lines of the Thaumaturge's Guild, Botanist's guild, etc. The HQ houses an extensive research library with planning and experimentation areas, an auditorium for education, lecture, and debate, and a relaxing loft for quiet study. -
In my case it's less the kid/dwarf thing, and more the model design making them look like (at least to me) some kind of weird doll, akin to Cabbage Patch Kids, which as a child were one of the creepiest things ever (and I had so many friends who had them and loved them, and I just couldn't even). If SE had given them just a little more "humanity" in their appearance, more akin to a hobbit or something like that, they wouldn't seem so odd to me. I can't say if it's this way for others, though.
-
It still does weird stuff like that, sometimes - where someone will be sitting in a chair in a yard, and someone else who comes up later sees them (on their own client) as sitting on the ground, clipping through the chair, because the game spawned the player and the "sit" command before it spawned the chair.
-
SE claimed housing quantity limits were somehow related to PS3; PS3 is gone; SE needs to just go ahead and double the wards across the board and the problem's solved.
-
As a single woman IRL, I can attest that this is completely disinteresting.
-
A very understandable POV. Have patience for now, though - with the queue issues and the new content to explore, a lot of roleplayers have their focus diverted, and a lot of RP FCs have some shake-up in their stability right now. Things'll get better, though (they already have been, little by little). Within a week or two most of the routine public events will likely be occurring again, and there'll be a resurgence of RP activity. Queues were actually really good last night. I was actually switching between alts. moved to new server o/ Have fun, then.

Please, please try to learn that your character isn't you.
-
Reset is at noon Pacific today again, which suggests the timing is static. Just FYI.
-
...now I'm imagining someone playing a Highlander with a beard and the long-hair-and-headband look, with tanned skin, wearing a white robe, named Jesus Muhammad, roleplayed as totally counter to the two theologies (a partying lech who loves the Quicksand and everything it stands for), and I can't decide if that's the worst idea or the best idea.
-
Like I'd said, the pre-release data indicated Mongolian, but the actual script (both written and spoken - which has consistent pronunciation among all the actors, I paid attention after I heard the words spoken in an unexpected way after the very first time) points to Turkish. That said, there's substantial enough overlap between the cultures - particularly in the time of Genghis Khan and predecessors - that it's entirely possible their culture is, itself, a blend (language akin to Turkish norms, names akin to Mongol norms, etc). In any case, best for us not to hijack the OP's thread.
-
Xaela are apparently Turkish-derived, but plenty of people are given names from outside their home culture in the real world and it's not any issue. That aside, if you're intending to fantasia her into a Raen, the name seems fine to me as far as a Japanese-inspired name. I couldn't say if it's similar to an NPC or not, but if it is, so what. Nobody in real life has the same name, ever, right? As long as your character isn't an attempt to mimic said NPC (which from what you said, she isn't), that doesn't seem problematic at all.
-
People will flat out quit if they restart too often, because it'll make it very inconvenient to do duties in a timely manner. Someone might only have a couple hours a day to play, and if a restart happens to be timed during their normal hours, that could be very disruptive.
-
I don't think it's fair to say everyone who would do that is pathetic, per se. I could see somebody who works a day job and cooks dinner for their family, and would like to enjoy an hour or two of time each night playing - but literally can't if the queue time is 3 hours - doing a technique like that just to ensure that when he finally sits down after cleaning up the dishes for the night he can actually get to play during his small window of opportunity. That seems like a wholly non-pathetic person who just wants to be able to play a little bit. Just a devil's advocate comment.
-
I use Teamviewer with a lot of my clients and have logged in to my home computer via a client's office to log myself back into the game (off-clock, obviously, and the client in question is one who doesn't care). It's a vicious circle. People AFK to avoid the queue, the queue slows because of the logged-in pop, so people AFK to avoid the queue, etc, etc. The random reboot thing isn't a real solution. They have to address the workarounds to the logout and remove them (and not ban players who used them, because people are always going to be clever - just take away the method).
-
This is gonna sound mean, but do you have any idea how a server works? And how impossibly difficicult it would be to differentiate between "valid" keystrokes/movement data and "AFK avoidance" keystrokes and movement data? They can't just boot people who've been in a zone for X number of minutes. RPers. People FATE farming. Crafters. Gatherers. The list goes on. They also are not going to track patterns for every single player. I don't know any game company that has the time and storage to do that. An active connection is defined as the client and server exchanging data. They could buff up the AFK code to require client packets going to the server, but that wouldn't stop someone from using a crafting macro or a macro to run in circles. Or to run between zone lines every X minutes. (Easily achived with arrow keys alone). SUPER MEAN! T.T Nah, I kid. You're all good, ol' buddy. :3 I know it's hardly as simple as I said, but nothing ever is with programming and MMOs especially (and this one in particular, which I've heard is like trying to find a meatball in a football field of spaghetti noodles). Still, it feels like they could... I mean, make some effort, you know? This plan of theirs, it's not really effort. I'm in a queue well over 2,000 mid-day on a weekday. That's crazy.
-
...or they could just make it so the existing afk-logout ignores player status (crafting, etc) and ignores repetitive keystrokes (so people can't just weigh down arrow keys and run in circles to avoid the logout). I mean your idea has merit too, but it seems better to just implement "no seriously, we mean it, AFK means AFK".
