  1. I forgot all about making this thread. I decided to put Uther's journal on hold until the game launches. Glad this thread is helping others though!
  2. Huh. I've never been asked that before. Nor have I really wondered it. In FFXI I dabbled with all races, except for Galka (Roegadyn here). I initially wanted to try out male Miqo'te simply because they weren't available in FFXI or 1.0 and I like animals. Being an avid hiker and mountain climber IRL, I chose Seeker of the Sun because I've got a rapport with Ol' Shiny. After the first phase of beta though I felt there were a lot of Miqo'te males running around and it was supposed to be "the solitary race". This wouldn't bother most people, but I'm weird so it bothered me. Next I tried Lalafell because they were underpopulated and I felt they had the expectation of being cutesy and mostly comic relief characters. I wanted to change that so I came up with a very serious and deep Lalafell Dunesfolk character. I shortly realized I didn't enjoy being three feet tall (unless I was a dwarf, which is my all-time favorite fantasy race) nor did I like magic, which was the premise of that character. So I canned him as well. Without any exciting ideas for characters, I fell back on my love for dragoons in previous Final Fantasy games. I started looking into Ishgard's lore and it struck me as very medieval, where most of this game has kind of a half-fantasy-half-steampunk feel to it. With this in mind, I drafted up an entire family tree of Dragoons from Ishgard called the Skystriders, with the youngest sibling of the last generation defecting and becoming disinherited by his family. Each one was given either a Nordic name (for Highlander members) or a name from Arthurian Legend (Midlanders). The only reason I really chose Midlander was to add to their numbers, as they're supposed to be the most populous, and so my character wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb as "That giant dragoon from Ishgard" in the case of Elezen or Roegadyn. Plus those races wouldn't fit into the names I've made as easily. That's really the only reason. Midlander Hyur aren't in the least bit interesting. They're just kind of the blank slate characters.
  3. So glad you put this in. One of my favorites.
  4. "What in Halone's bloody fury?" is one I've seen, and as an Ishgardian, adopted.
  5. Fair enough. Our characters seem to be opposite sides of the same dragoony coin.
  6. I'd think that some characters (mine, for example) would be to overwhelmed to come after such a force with that type of vengeance. It's like going against a volcano for erupting and causing your village to be wipe out. Ernest is just like this about it: :dazed: It's not at all like going against a volcano for erupting and destroying my village for a number of reasons. (1) Volcanoes don't have wings or the ability to fly away. (2) You can kill a dragon, but not a lava spewing mountain. (3) Anybody that has the will power to take down such a force might think anything else a minor inconvenience on their way to the main objective. I think what he's getting at is that Bahamut is powerful enough to be considered a force of nature. It's a dragon the size of a city-state that destroyed the world in a little over two minutes. It also disappeared in a flash of light five years ago as soon as it arrived. Most would consider that more similar to a hurricane or a typhoon than an actual enemy. Granted some characters would have the ambition to ask the big questions (Misericorde) or hunt it down for vengeance (possibly you, or Dogberry, or Rock), but I don't see it being a common quest for the random townspeople of whatever-the-hell, if that makes sense. As for my character, Uther is a trained and tried dragoon and he'll definitely take a swing at Big B if he gets the chance, but he's more occupied with helping the world rebuild itself and asking/answering questions about Bahamut before blindly chasing him to the ends of the Hydaelyn. Hope that clarifies.
  7. Fair enough. As much as I hate being treated like a child, I can admit that in this case I was acting like one. ==== Accurate. And about the EDIT: From what I've seen, and I haven't known the group very long, they like to have things make sense. "A wizard did it" isn't good enough for them, which I like. It is far more technology based than magic based, but magic isn't entirely absent I don't think. For where it counts though, Misericorde is about explaining the unexplained and exploring the unexplored. The threat of Bahamut isn't at the forefront, but I would say it is definitely in the back of their minds at all times. Other than that, it's a very gritty, dirty, and realistic linkshell and I recommend checking it out.
  8. "Revenge, to me, is a bit of a cliche." is different from "Revenge is cliche." Granted, I could've used a better choice of words initially, but the second one sounds a lot more dismissive than what I actually said. Also, you're acting like I kicked down the thread door and told the OP he's an idiot and made a "Yo Momma" joke. I said my piece about revenge, but I also pointed him in the direction to check out a linkshell which might have the gritty and dark theme he's going for. I didn't mean to spit in his soup, but I'm also entitled to my own opinion. It also wasn't "right out the gate" either, since I had made a helpful post before that. I also just elaborated on what I meant and explained that I don't hate the idea, I just hate how poorly it can be executed sometimes. And you're still trying to start a flame war with me over an improper choice of words, that, once again, I just had to explain. Also, the asshole analogy was totally uncalled for, but thank you for insulting my personal character over poor word choice. It seems completely necessary.
  9. Thanks! And nice use of Grizzly Hills! I have that one on my iPod!
  10. Revenge, to me, is a bit of a cliche. Just because you're not into it, doesn't mean it's cliche. I love a good revenge story. My character suffers PTSD from the calamity and deals with it with violently. Sorry that my character choices aren't yours. You're so enlightened. Whoa, okay, getting a little defensive there. A good revenge story has its place. From Hamlet to Moby Dick to Batman, revenge can make for a good narrative. I (as in "this is my opinion and I'm not forcing you to do anything.") just think, that in my personal RP experience, the most annoying characters are the ones that sit around telling sad and overly-dramatic stories about how Bahamut or Garlemald or Edwin VanCleef or Sauron or Dr. Destroyer or Lex Luthor or Santa Claus killed their family or some bullshit and now they only live to kill that person/thing. Great. Glad there's a lot of dimension to that character, now on to whoever else is around. I'm not saying that revenge is stupid or ridiculous, but it has to be done right, and it can't be done by everyone. It, like every other theme, has its place. And I find that it's a very common theme and often a poorly done one. Also, about that last little jab. I don't want your character to make my character's choices. I don't want anyone's character to be anything like my character. I'm happy in my own little bubble that is Uther Skystrider. I don't want a thousand other Uther Skystriders. And I can openly admit that even my character has his cliche themes. He's a dragoon through-and-through which isn't original at all, and he's got a white-knight complex like every hero ever. I just try to spin it to make it a little unique, which is all I'm saying most revenge characters need to do. It's not enlightened to have a different perspective on something. I really don't see why that response had to be so aggressive.
  11. Well, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. The question at hand of "Are you going to use it if it's there?" is a simple one. If you want to dig deep and think of every possible consequence of there being one, you can, but I took the question at face value. Since it's OOC anyway, it shouldn't effect anything IC. If you start RPing in the VoIP chat, I might have a problem. But I don't really care what you're talking about OOC while I'm not there, as long as it doesn't effect IC interaction with my character. I don't feel the need to join an intermission or backstage LS for the same reason. I'm here to RP. So I won't be using an OOC function. So I voted "No, I won't be using this." That's my logic behind my vote. Plain and simple. I'm not here to start an argument about whether or not the other argument is valid, though. Let's just agree to disagree on this one, Rhostel.
  12. The problem with this poll is no one's reading the question. It isn't "Should this be available to the RPC?" or "Do you think others will use it?" it's "Will you use it?" I never said no one should have it, I said I won't use it, so I voted no. It's that simple and not really worth debating.
  13. That's really funny. I was going to link that same thing, but I was too lazy to navigate to it to find the link. Good follow-up. But yeah, what he said. That thread is a perfect example of what I've been fumbling to explain for the past three posts.
  14. I agree with this. Revenge, to me, is a bit of a cliche. Gritty implies no alignment. Whenever I picture Uther in my head, his face has dirt on it and his clothes are faded and patched up. The way I see it is, if you're an adventurer, a real adventurer, you're not going to have perfect hair or skin or clothing. You're most likely going to, well, look like shit. That's the vibe I intend Uther to give off. If he stayed in one place for a few years and bought new clothes and got a desk job, he'd probably be quite attractive, but until then he looks like he was raised by animals. That's just me though. I enjoy realism in my fantasy, some people don't. I could go into "gritty" as a theme, as opposed to physically "gritty", but in my opinion, one hand washes the other. If you put yourself in the mentality of one, the other is going to follow.
  15. I think, looking back, Wind Waker was probably my favorite as well. A lot of people hear that and cry "blasphemy!" because of fan devotion to OoC. Frankly, though, Wind Waker's music was outstanding and the sense of adventure you get from being on the boat and exploring the map is unrivaled by any of the other Zeldas in my opinion.
  16. To help with some clarification: Misericorde is a gritty and dirty bunch, though they're definitely not "evil." It's more about realism than anything else, from what I've seen. I'm not the authority on the shell by any stretch of the imagination, but I've been talking to Shuck about it for quite some time. If you're interested, check out the Linkshell Hall ad and contact him. I don't know if it's what you're going for, but it's at least worth a read.
  17. Right. When you take it apart it is just the intro theme, but Fado's version has that ancient and foresty feel to it which I really like.
  18. Always loved this song personally.
  19. I completely agree. 100%. Couldn't have said it better myself. I will piggy back on this though and say that even if it is OOC, hearing the voice of someone who is RPing a character I interact with might subconsciously effect how I view the character. I realize there's a big difference between the player and the character, but I can't say I'm a perfect enough RPer to completely ignore the human element.
  20. I don't like people using "theme songs" for their character, but I use music when getting into character as well. I also use it for writing (my friend and I are writing a comic book saga with a lot of medieval elements), reading, and drawing. I have quite a few songs, most from soundtracks, that I use when thinking about my character. I like to think of different mood music for my character as well. I'm a big fan of multi-dimensional characters. Sometimes you have to get serious and defend the people, sometimes you just want to hang out in the market. Since I have a lot of mood music, here are quite a few, though not nearly all, of my preferred songs: Walking around Gridania and interacting with locals, or taking a sunday chocobo ride through the Shroud: Epic aerial Dragoon combat: Thinking about Ishgard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF0JKk4AaiU Visiting Ul'dah: Nighttime after an adventure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7nJyh_TDkI If I had to pick a theme song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZI_2N4ydfDc Or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-_g8NZr1tA I know the last one is a bit cliche, but he's a dragon hunter from the mountains with highlander ancestry... give me a break. Sorry there's so many. No one song should be able to describe a character, in my opinion.
  21. I won't be joining this LS/FC, as I'm strongly dedicated elsewhere and I don't see that loyalty waning really any time in my FFXIV career. However, I do like this idea as a fan of Medieval European history and High Medieval Fantasy. I'm curious to see how it's going to play out and how my character will interact with the Knights of the Twelve. Keep it up. And there's your outsider support for the day.
