Hey, I love Fleet Foxes! And #2.... Dat Beard... Damn the Bolsheviks for taking it from us!
-
I love Judge Dredd.

Well said. I realize we in-fight a lot, and sometimes I even throw myself into the middle of it, but, and I think I speak for everyone here, it's never personal. There are plenty of people here that I get into arguments with one day and then up-rep the next. I have a lot of respect for each and every one of you here, despite our disagreements. As some of you have even seen in Intermission over the last few weekends, I never shut up. I love talking to all of you, and I'm glad I found a gaming community that I actually enjoy being a part of. People like you all are the reason I want to settle in FFXIV and stop MMO-hopping.

Glad you caught on. I was wondering if anyone would notice. I saw you there, too. If there's one this weekend (nothing has been announced to my knowledge but there's still time) I'll be there as Uther.

Yes! More super heroes in Final Fantasy! Right when I thought the X-Men vs. Bahamut scenario couldn't get any better! Sorry, it's late, and I really like making up ridiculous situations that would never happen. Didn't even see this. You're my hero.
-
SPOILERS: The Warriors of Light were the X-Men the whole time and the Echo is a mutation. Bahamut shows up, ominous music starts playing, then it's completely cut off by this: It shocks everyone. Turns out squenix was bought out by disney-marvel and no one told anyone. Greatest plot twist in the history of all video games. RPers and casual players alike fall out of their seats in utter shock as the X-Men theme blares through their speakers and Cyclops is shooting eye lasers at Bahamut as Wolverine is fighting Garleans. Everyone was wrong except that twelve year old. Then the game goes down forever. Best ending in the history of gaming.

Shit, I would. I fucking love the X-Men. Jokes aside, I think another reason not to add an RP tag would be because, as it is in my case, some roleplayers have non-roleplaying friends. I have a lot of RL friends who I like to play MMOs with. We've been playing together since high school. They don't even know I roleplay because I always have to juggle between two servers. (...actually that's not a bad thing, they're kind of assholes, they might tease me a little for this hobby.) Either way, it'd be much easier for me to enjoy the game if I could play OOC with them then hop on over to Ul'dah in time for an IC meeting with my linkshell before I run IC dungeons. Overall, it isn't a big deal either way, and honestly I would prefer an official RP server, but I can see both sides of the argument and I'm prepared to deal with an unofficial one.

No problem! Good luck on your journal. I hope to read it soon.

I always felt that LOTRO had the right mindset on this kind of stuff. Their housing system was top-notch. Unlike most games with housing, you didn't have to be invited and you didn't just disappear to that character's seemingly doorless house in the mysterious dimension that is their place of living (looking at you Champions Online) when you were. There were physical neighborhoods anyone could enter. If the character didn't pay rent, they were evicted and their house was up for sale. After long enough waiting, our guild almost all had houses in the same neighborhood and our guild hall was right in the center. On slow sundays when no one felt like adventuring or doing dungeons, we could spend the entire day sitting in our little mine neighborhood (it was an all-dwarf guild) smoking and joking. I specifically remember a lot of meetings were at my house before we got our hall because it had a stream in front of it and the bridge made it look really official... plus I was the nerd who actually cared about in-game housing and it was nicely furnished with painted walls and floors. Actually, I'm going to go on a rant about that. Everyone's house looked like a stone cell. I know we were dwarves and we lived under a mountain, but that doesn't mean we're averse to carpeting or tables or chairs. I had rich red walls and a hardwood floor and a huge bed and plenty of chairs and paintings and stuff. If I enter any of your houses IC when this system gets implemented and it's just a barren room where you stand idly, Uther will say something. Come on, guys, get with the program. I haven't been following the housing system on FFXIV much, but from what I've seen they took a similar approach, which is very exciting to me. Anyways, as far as land claiming: if FFXIV implements a similar neighborhood system to the one LOTRO has, the problem will be solved almost entirely.

I've been thinking about this since the beta closed. I'm not a big fan of alts, and I like to focus on one character at a time. That being said, I do have an alt, but hopefully by launch I'll have chosen one permanent character. Some of you may have met my alt, Wart, at the Blue Skies event at Horizon. Since, I really like him and am debating his importance, I might as well put pictures of him here. Before I do that, here's some info. Race: Lalafell Gender: Male Clan: Dunesfolk Age: 36 Demeanor: Scruffy, but intelligent. Wart is a dirty little adventurer who has seen a lot of battle and made a lot of gadgets to make up for his physical disadvantages. He's gritty for a lala and as angry as a wolverine, but he's young at heart like all lalafell should be. He also has big-ass sideburns.

Oh, yeah, I didn't mean it to seem like you were taking jabs at another server. I just picked up from what you and Blade said that there might be some folks out their who harbor some animosity toward us. I was completely unaware of that.
-
I should hope, in the spirit of fostering RP fun for everyone, regardless of server, that other hubs might consider linking to our website as well. Wait, what's our beef with behemoth? How is server beef even a thing?
-
I would say wait until open beta, because a lot of people aren't taking closed beta as canon and it might irk people to be put into someone they haven't met's journal. As for a site, I was planning on using wordpress for mine if I ever get it started. It's easily accessible and fairly user friendly.

There doesn't seem to be as many midlanders lately... I GUESS IT'S UP TO ME.

Making an Ishgard-based character is definitely a pretty long and painful road, but I really like what I know about it and it seems like a perfect place for Uther to start. It's definitely tough, but it's worth it to me. Hopefully when more information comes out it'll make things a lot smoother.
-
Uther was born and raised in Ishgard but expatriated to help the Grand Companies five cycles ago (story for another time). I'm pretty much going the same route as you, though, and trying to tip-toe the subject as to avoid lore-breaking. So far, I've found it's pretty simple to just say "I don't want to talk about it." when it comes up IC. I feel like Uther would know at least something about dragons though, having fought them for four years before exiling himself. It's a lot harder to keep quiet about that one. Either way, thanks for the help everyone. I'll check out those youtube videos and whatever else I can find.
-
So, I've been kind of getting Uther's story and personality straight in preparation for phase 4 and launch. I have a ton of information on dragoons, Ishgard, and the significant events that led up to the Seventh Umbral Era. I know all about the governmental structures of the three playable city-states and whatnot. Somehow, though, I missed a HUGE piece of dragoon lore. Besides the fact that Ishgard is in a holy war with them, I have no information on dragons. Can anyone enlighten me or at least point me in the right direction? I know that wyverns are like smaller dragons that are used as bombardment forces in battle against Ishgard. I also know that Nidhogg is a big, scary motherfucker. That's pretty much all I've got for details.

It's weird that the beta forums threw themselves behind Behemoth whereas the RPC widely decided on Gilgamesh. I'm guessing the Blue Skies events sort of shook the foundation a bit for the RPC. I'm playing on Balmung anyway so I didn't vote. Interesting though.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Eva. And Curtis, my plan was that Uther would learn to use a sword and shield for paladin. The handling of the weapon itself would be awkward at first, since he's used to polearms, but he's already an experienced close quarters fighter so the change wouldn't be out of control for him. If I were a black mage and decided to be a warrior one day and didn't even put in effort to explain the change in combat style, weapon wielding, or even how he handles the weight of the armor, I could see that turning some heads. Really though, any change can be made as long as the person doing it at least gives it a reasonable explanation IMO. Some people just like sticking to one class. I don't get it either, despite dragoon being far-and-away my main focus for my character. EDIT: Don't know why I'm explaining all of Uther's plans to you, Curtis. We're in the same linkshell. You'll see it all eventually.

Shouldn't matter at all. Wart is dunesfolk on paper, but I made him plainsfolk in the creator for the sideburns option. I refuse to believe only one clan of lalafell can grow hair on the sides of their faces. Other than that, he has tan skin, light colored hair, and he hangs out in Ul'dah. Unless someone is studying the character creator options, they'd just assume he's dunesfolk. If you're just going keeper for the eyes and keeping the rest looking very seeker-esque, no one will notice or care that you're a keeper. You can still RP your character as a seeker without issue.
-
You're not wrong. It's kind of shaky ground. If I RP a warrior who is outstanding in combat with an axe and has been doing it his whole life, then I switch to black mage because I'd like to try it IC, a lot of people would cry "God-moding!" However, fuck that. People should be able to play what they want. I personally like to keep a sense of realism in my class choice, though. Here's my example. Uther Skystrider was raised in Ishgard. That alone points its finger at dragoon, which is what I'm planning on. I plan on being the quintessential dragoon. I plan on RPers thinking "Uther" when someone says "dragoon". However, that's not because I only want to play one class. It makes the most sense to me that he starts off that way. If I start him lancer, he will begin the game in Gridania, which is the closest city-state to Ishgard geographically. So it all kind of fits together. After a time of 'gooning it up (that's what I'm calling "playing a dragoon" now), I do plan to start experiencing more options with Uther ICly. I already have set up roads for him to go Warrior and Paladin. Possibly even Monk or Archer. I don't think Uther will be dabbling in magic, though. He doesn't know anything about that shiz. Anyways, that's rambling and I apologize. I agree that characters shouldn't be their classes, but the game is highly based in combat so it's a little understandable to RP a specialist style character. Not sure if that post made any sense. It's 1 a.m. where I am. Whatever, man.

Family members who went away but you stayed behind.

This is a really good question and I really wish I could help answer it. Wart had a lot of friends that fought at the battle. The only reason he didn't go was because of a broken leg. So I'm wondering the same thing. Sorry I can't help, but I can at least bump the thread a little.
