  1. I understand your brand of RP and why you likeit, but I'll just point out; when too many things happen to any one individual or group, I completely lose my suspension of disbelief, and can no longer enjoy what I perceive to be over the top drama. It has nothing to do with me being upset OOC, and everything to do with my ability to believe in the story. My preferred brand is not for everyone tho. Its why RP is so great, its limitless and boundaryless
  2. A lot of posts on this sight revolve around RP differences/clashes in style. Healthy RP debates are a good thing; the more you understand about other people's viewpoints, the more common ground you can find, which opens up more chances to RP with more people. However, it is also a fine line. Sometimes we all need to just step back and say; 'Hey, RP is meant to be fun, remember?' If you're not having fun, you're probably overthinking things. Your expectations are probably too high, or you're disappointed in the way others RP, but in this big, beautiful community, there are going to be disagreements, many different types of playstyles, and confusion. The sooner we come to grips with this, the sooner we can understand its just part of playing in an MMo world. It's not a good or bad thing, it just is. Somewhere out there in the wide world of Eorzea I'll bet is a community just for you (speaking figuratively, not addressing this to the OP). A home where everyone's styles gel, where the RP flows strong, and gaming friends look forward to logging on together and telling stories. I hope everyone finds their niche. However, I think while this is a very good thing, it is also important to engage the wider community. It may not always be the RP you love or enjoy, but by opening your thoughts, and stories to others, you play an important part in creating a stronger community- a community that welcomes newcomers with open arms, helps and supports each other, and that realizes we won't always get along, but we'll always work to keep things going strong. tl;dr - Can't We Just Love Each Other and Have Fun? - Seconded!
  3. I'm sorry, but could you explain this more? In what situation could this happen? How could somebody "lvl ICly", anyway, considering that "level" is a separate concept from narrative to begin with? I never said I do not lvl ICly - going on hunting misiions or exploring dungeons with friends is a great RP adventure. But typically I do not follow the storyline or quest story in this case., because it does not make sense to do so for my char. For instance, on one of the beginner gathering quests, my Thaum was not gathering body parts for some random stranger that gave her a quest to do so... my char. Would have laughed at such a request and thought the guy a major weirdo. Instead, she NEEDED those ingedients for a potion she was trying to make. ICly I was satisfying the quest, while taking care of the quest OOCly too. I do not think in an MMO you can expect 100% immersion, because the game is not built specifically for roleplayers. Its not like tabletop where the whole point is RP. So to expect the game mechanics to make sense RP wise, or to expect others to pay attention to it ICly is just going to be a wall of frustration and headache. Honestly its expecting too much of the game (which is not built with the sole purpose of roleplay) and the community. Attempts can be made to incorporate the main story into RP, but that is an individual user decision. For me, the main story has little to do with my char, so I treat PvE as separate, as OOC
  4. To the OP's point; Even Gandalf had a sword. He didn't really use it much, but there were situations where magic wouldn't do I suppose. I see no problem in someone having varying degrees of success at 2-3 disciplines, if ICly the character put in enough practice to develop the appropriate talents. So no, multi-classing in itself isn't a terrible thing (since my char has 2 class skills) but I would refrain from absorbing too many of them into your RP, or adopting the PvE storyline that we are 'The One' because... well, in the greater community RP setting, we can't all be 'The One'. Keanu Reeves would disapprove.
  5. I planned on having my character be good at two disciplines (Pug and Arc) and maybe some crafting skills too. To be good at everything is god-moding (there I said it) and also makes for boring characters. If my char was good at every discipline the game offers, with no weaknesses and no flaws; where's the conflict? Where's the part where they struggle and overcome obstacles? Where's the realism? Every character should have limits, and things they simply cannot do, no matter how hard they try (unless you prefer Dragonball Z style RP) ...if people want to engage in RPing all-powerful beings, that is fine, that is their choice, and you won't harbor any grief from me, but its not an interesting way to develop a character, in my opinion.
  6. **coughs, mimicking Aldeus' light, reedy voice** " we have a ton of forum rp ^^ especially now while we're waiting for game launch. Do check us out!"
  7. This, and another post I read recently have been a real eye-opener to me I never knew people treated PvE content as canon. Unfortunately, I can't begin to answer the question as I've never considered it before, but I'm interested to see what people will say!

    Hi

Hi Gary, this is Magellan. Magellan's welcomed a few newcomers before, read a few threads here and there; ignored others when there just wasn't the time to click on every single one of them... you seem a man of refined tastes, Gary. I'm sure you can appreciate the need to spend some quality time clicking and reading threads on sites other than the RPC. Though if you happen to come across a forums page on my site history dealing with alpaca breeding to create a spitting, woolly, super-race of Camelidae (I bet you're wondering if Magellan used Google for that); I assure you that was my cat. She likes to sleep on the laptop you see. But, I digress. The point is, ah, perhaps I ought to wait a moment for you to gather pencil and paper, to take some notes. Run along then, Magellan is patient. You've returned? Ah, good. The point is that you've found yourself amongst good company here. While not everyone seems to possess the excess savior-faire as yours and I truly, you can rest easy knowing that it does exist, and that many here would be more than willing to sacrifice the chance of developing a rash, to RP with you. May your stay here be a peaceful one.
  9. That's odd, I had sort of planned to only train in the disciplines that my character would be good at (Pugilist and Archer) and ignore the rest. Rather than try to wrap my RP around the game mechanics, I was going to wrap the game mechanics around my RP. Just a different way of thinking I guess *shrug* If absolutely required to learn different disciplines, I would just ignore it in the context of my RP. Just like you make IC/OOC separations, my character makes RP-story/PvE-story separation as two different entities that have nothing to do with each other. Again, that's trying to wrap your RP around the game mechanics, and to me that's just not going to work I pay attention to the lore of quests and game-story, but I don't treat any of it as my character's canon, because it would be impossible to have it make any sense, unless I catered my entire story to align with the game's which to me would be boring. This could also shed insight into why I level sooo slowly, as my char's story takes precedence over in game story.
  10. Haha I recognize Naunet from Tera. Though I never rp'd with you, your deluge of forum rp was quite impressive! I can also attest to the fact that you speak your mind. However, you have also been very receptive and respectful to others speaking theirs. Which is the way a lot of people here are Welcome!
  11. Become part of the official welcoming committee and you can get that post count way up lots of new ppl joioning everyday. Welcome!
  12. *Is grabbed and forced into RP* "Nooo! Put me down! You can't make me do anything, I- oh wait, you said RP? I love RP! Welcome!"
  13. Land claiming sounds like bad news imo. If someone's already there, RP elsewhere. If not, the spot's yours for that session! But to expect to be able to use the same spot everytime without interruption, or having to share is begging for drama.
  14. RP burnout sucks :c been there. Hope you're able to still enjoy the game, and find some rp suited to your tastes in the future!
  15. Greetings! Have a cookie!
  16. Hello and welcome! If you ever want to practice some rp scenes to get a feel for your char let me know, I'd be happy to help!

    Yo Yo Yo

Hello and welcome! Nice rhyrhm you got going there! *taps desk in synchronized rhythm* Drum circle anyone?
  18. I have been in several gaming communities in which the older, established player base is downright obnoxious towards newer, incoming players. They call them noobs, snort at them derisively (figuratively) for asking questions, and seem intent on chasing the new players off, or at least forcing them to jump through a series of hurdles to ever feel welcome. A popularity contest and a pissing contest all wrapped up into one. From day one here on the RPC this has NOT been the case. I came in a little jaded, and suspicious, figuring 'here I go again, another mmo in which I'll have to put up with trolls, elitists, and general rude behavior all in an effort to find some enjoyable game time.' Instead, I have found a community that genuinely cares about each other, nevers seems to tire from answering questions, even if they have bern asked a dozen times before... that celebrates RP tolerance and diversity... that has flare-ups and differences of opinions, but always seems to get back to what's important in the end... overall a community that is built off of respect and is willing to listen to each other. And for that I am thankful. I can't wait to meet you all in game
  19. Linkshells are more like groups that share a chat channel together, to pursue the same RP story/idea. Free Companies are the more traditional guild structure. You can join multiple shells, but only one company.
  20. Greetings and welcome! Cool looking character ^^
  21. I think our real world serves as a perfectly fine example of how things would also be in Eorzea; you have minor culture shock- Minor: +Someone who grew up on a farm their whole life, visits a city (or city-state) for the first time. +Someone who's never traveled outside their own country visits a land where things are run much different. These people would be a little awestruck, a little out of their depth, a little touristy, but would in most cases be able to blend in after awhile. Then you have medium culture shock; Medium: +Cultures such as Eskimos, Amish, Buddhist Monks! - groups that live among us, have contact with us, yet also keep themselves apart, fighting to hold on to their traditions and beliefs. I expect the same sort of thing would happen in Eorzea; groups of races that are fully aware of the outside world, of the greater civilization, but mostly try to keep themselves out of it, other than for trade and news. If such a person were suddenly thrust into a city-state longterm, their adjustment would be much rougher than a case of mild culture shock. Then you have major; Major: +Aboriginees, Bushmen, Cannibals! - those who live in very remote areas, and have had little to no exposure to 'culture'. Just like in real life, these types would suffer from major culture shock, when exposed to a slice of 'culture'. tl; dr In the end, it doesn't matter (imo). Whether you be city slicker, country bumpkin, isolated traditionalist, or relic from a lost time... all can be realistic and enjoyable to rp with ... however, though I do echo your thought about being 'normal' normal is in the eye of the beholder. Someone with deeply rooted tribal beliefs might consider themselves to be perfectly normal. But it is easy and very tempting to try and give your character too much. Too make them TOO interesting, and too complicated; I like to quote Pixar's the Incredibles in these cases; (Syndrome): "When everyone is super... no one will be."
  22. This is great! Thanks for all the hard work!
  23. Hello and welcome!
  24. I like the drawing; he looks like he belongs on the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
  25. I imagine it would be something like this;
