RP Servers: A Discussion (mods please read before locking..)
Blade replied to Mtoto Wamoto's topic in RP Discussion
I've sort of noticed one, to be honest, but it could just be different perspectives. I think people who are legacy are happy to be legacy, and they are happy to have been a part of something that isn't around anymore (the original FFXIV 1.0). I think though that anyone would be silly to hold it over anyone's head though these days as we head into 1.0. I'm hopeful that within a year, or even a few months, it'll just be sort of a blur who was in the game in 1.0 and who arrived with 2.0. At least, that's been somewhat my experience. I joined Final Fantasy XIV 1.0 back around April of it's final year, when people were really beginning to brace for the end. It was a little hard, yeah, to start the game at that late of a stage, but I made some good friends all the same and now feel I have a place in the community. And all that, really, happened in the span of a few months at most. I never got rich or had enough time to really get much endgame gear since I just was too late in arriving, but I had a really damn sweet time getting done the things I was able to. And the community really does try and reach out to you. One Gerik Aston heard I was an RPer and went searching for me to get an RP pearl and get me involved. -
RP Servers: A Discussion (mods please read before locking..)

I think we will, too. One of the things that I'm looking forward to the most is meeting all the new roleplayers. Part of the reason I had my character get injured at the end of 1.0 was so that I'd have to start over as a level 1 Pugilist, and I'm hoping to meet many of the new roleplayers while exping and whatnot. We really do want this to grow; and really, from talking with everyone there really isn't an in-group out-group thing with legacy vs. non-legacy. -
I miss my old Steel Cyclone sound effect.

I suppose it all depends on the situation and the scene. If by "needed to fight unarmed" you mean, for example, his weapon got knocked away from him ICly, then you can have him hide his weapon visually and RP out his actions. Given too that if your character is a martial artist and a mage, it isn't too far of a stretch to go that he could be adept with staves, sort of like martial arts with a Bō. If your character for some reason is attacked (perhaps through something like an IC FATE) and Monk is your stronger job--I dunno. I can't really think of a circumstance where I'd have a character ICly 'job change' on the scene. ESPECIALLY if it meant that I would need to change gear. The only time I would do that would likely be to change from a DD to a crafting job; but for his equipment, it would only be clothes that could reasonably fit under his armor (I like the vests for this purpose). Jumping in and out from one AF to another is going to get you some questionable glances. Blade, for example, has a couple jobs. He's a Warrior first and foremost, and he's an 'alright' Gladiator (but not a Paladin). Anyways, that all being said, I can't really find myself trying to RP both in a given scene. That's a lot of gear to be carrying on his back, and I prefer to RP a character that doesn't require a lengthy description when he comes on scene *In addition to his Axe, fellow roleplayer can also see that he has a bow and quiver, a shield, a dagger, a sword...* ... I prefer a more 'what you see is what you get' approach.

This, underscored a few times. Adventurers as a whole tend to give up a lot of their previous lives. While I think its important to factor in the lore and try to incorporate it into your character as much as possible, realize that the lore isn't describing the end all be all of what your character can be doing today. Adventurers as a whole are sort of a class among themselves, and are frequently referred to as such by NPCs. They don't necessarily follow all the cultural norms due to their lifestyle. They may not may much respects to a given tribe, and some may have taken up the adventuring lifestyle specifically to get away from what restrictions there may have already been in place. So in the end... I'd say make the lore important in your backstory. But it doesn't have to determine what is important to your character in this stage of their life.

Thank you for your dedication Kylin, I know it had to be stressful. Treat yourself to a good beer or something.

The A Realm Reborn site was updated today, providing us with some new field screenshots, a new bestiary, and information on two more primals... In particular, this tidbit on Bahamut gives light to what may have happened to him during the Calamity... and why our good friend Louisoix was smiling. On Bahamut: "Once freed, the terrible being wrought fiery destruction across the length and breadth of Eorzea, his devastating rampage marking the beginning the Seventh Umbral Era. In the midst of the chaos, however, Bahamut was enveloped in a blinding white light and abruptly disappeared from the skies. None claim to have seen the primal in the five years since." You can read about all the rest here: Bahamut: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/world/threats/primals/bahamut Odin: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/world/threats/primals/odin Field Shots have been added to the locations: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/world/cities Bestiary: http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/world/threats/bestiary

Oh yes oh yes oh yes Can I get a culture lesson in here? The style of sitting you see there is what is called in Japan, yankii zuwari, or "Yankee Sit." Now those of us who live in the north in the United States may balk and argue "Hey, I don't sit like that!" Here, though, the term yankee doesn't refer specifically to us good-for-nothing northerners, but instead is a slang term for thug or hooligan in Japanese. Frequently the term was used for semi-delinquent youths who would dye their hair blonde making them look 'American.' It's possible this came from anti-American sentiment way back when, but these days it doesn't carry that connotation anymore, though. Anyways, that style of sit is supposedly intended in Japanese culture to be sorta thuggish or display rebellious attitude, in short. You see it a lot in Japanese anime as well, although I saw it frequently enough in every day life to decide to research it when I lived in Japan. On a lot of web pages that describe the sit, I've found them to be more critical of the style of sitting than I actually found it in Japan... as in, I didn't have the sense that it was as frowned upon from what I had read. But it definitely does carry the hip/rebellious attitude bit. As for where it came from? Those of you who who were talking about staying clean are on the right track. One source in Japan told me that it developed from war, and soldiers would squat like this low to the ground in order to rest, while staying above mud. It tends to be fairly difficult for westerners to pull off right. The correct way to do it is to squat with your feet flat on the ground. Most people in the States are unable to do it without balancing on the balls of your foot, which is cheating. The right muscles are needed to be trained when you are young to do it right, and the reason why Japanese frequently do it so easily has to do with how their traditional toilets were designed (and I'll stop there). On another note, I noticed the Male Miqo'te doesn't seem to put his feet flat on the ground, so hmmmmmm, maybe this says something about Eorzean toilets? Personally though, I think they gave Male Miqo'te that style of sit to give them some kind of attitude. That's the modern interpretation of that style of sitting. Though an argument could be made for them wanting to stay clean, as well, as that is where the sit originally came from.

Not meaning to revive a dead post (well, except that's exactly what I'm doing...) But I also have an XI RP Linkshell, that's been going on for a couple for a few years. A few members of the community have already switched over to Siren to take part in it, so if anyone is interested in RP on Siren, you can hit us up at http://tales-of-vanadiel.guildwork.com Apologies for the fugly banner. It's due to get remade. >.> If anyone is interested in a more long term thing, we're fully intending to continue RPing there after ARR drops.

Not to mention, most of us also do lots of other stuff in the game that doesn't pertain to RP, such as leveling OOC (or IC) jobs for our characters. These all start at level 1, unless they've been played around with before, and new jobs have been promised in the future. So there definitely will be the opportunity for you to play with people and go through leveling, even if someone is legacy and has a level 50 character. Like me! I'm writing it out that my character injured his arm as a Warrior during the Battle of Carteneau and no longer can properly swing his axe. Due to this, I'm going to take up Pugilist/Monk, as a form of almost... physical therapy/training I guess. Never touched the job before so it's going to be a climb from 1 to 50!

I think the issue is simply that we already know what the alternatives are. Deirdre and Xenedra gave us some options for that, and they are good ones. The options they gave, yes, they would work. So the discussion for that isn't really needed. I'm sure most people will be able to think of alternative solutions. That and, after seeing how my original posts, which weren't rude/accusing/filled with rage or fire, so quickly escalated into a bomb fest. This was probably a feature on the wiki that I would've used once. I really wasn't wholly invested in it, I just disagreed with the reasoning and wanted to provide perhaps a different way to read the results. But after having someone repeatedly not read my posts, after Deirdre's feelings got hurt (which was 100% not what I was going for), and after people started throwing mud at each other, I'm really beyond the point of wanting to have a good discussion about it. That's what I wanted back on page 1. Now after... whatever you would call this... drama, my mood has been shot. I frankly find this to be embarrassing for the community that things went this way, at a place where we should and inevitably will cross opinions. Had I any remote idea that something like this would've happened, I wouldn't have posted my original post. This has wholly not been worth it.

The personal attacks are really uncalled for. Posting an image calling the people who oppose your argument pieces of shit is uncalled for. That, and this delightful little tidbit: Also: Removing the majority of your wiki page because of a little disagreement. Sure is mod material in here. Is particularly helpful to the conversation especially when the target of said comment hasn't been a mod on these forums in some time. /sarcasm Look, the RPC is a hub for roleplayers. So guess what? People aren't going to see eye to eye on everything. People are going to disagree. People are going to not like decisions that get made against what they would like to see from this. That goes with the territory. That's why this isn't one big RP linkshell. It's a hub, and from here, you go on and you find the RP linkshell with the group you see most eye to eye with. That's what this place is for, and I think it does a pretty good job at that. But when you are here, you should respect others. No one should be insulting Deirdre for how she said she will be interpreting the results. I would like to think that it is fine for me to politely disagree, given how I feel the poll was worded and how the results of such were interpreted. I would like to think that we could have a discussion, whether it goes one way or the other and be able to get somewhere with it. For all I care, Deirdre's reason for it could simply be that she's tired of working on the wiki and just doesn't have it in her to go back and make the change. She's done a lot for the wiki, and the RPC as a whole, already. That reasoning alone would be good enough for me. But I think we should be able to have a discussion without people getting so worked up, without people posting very inappropriate images attacking the other side. I won't throw mud at your face or kick you in the kidney until you do so to me. I like to think we're adults here, and if we don't see eye to eye, we can be okay with that.

Please go back and read the poll, and what it was polling. The question that it was asking was, word for word, "In regards to making separate pages for your NPC's on the wiki, it comes down to, would you do it?" This was not a poll of "should we do this or not." It was to gauge the use. The poll was not pulling majority opinion, yay or nay, towards the idea. It was would you maintain pages for it, yes/no. Deirdre even clarified it herself when she wrote in the poll, that if "If you want to vote 'Maybe' please vote No or do not vote at all. We want to gauge how many people are actually wanting to use this idea." It was not a poll for/against the idea. It was not a poll of opinion. It was not a poll of should we change it. Please go back and read the poll. That being said, I don't think it was the intent of anyone to make Deirdre feel bad. We all know she has put a lot of time and work into this wiki. I don't think anyone is discounting that or that anyone is ungrateful to her.
-
The poll was to see how many would use it. It wasn't a poll to determine overall people in favor or against the idea. As I said, I doubt 30% of the RPers will contribute to each individual lore section. But it is still important for that section to be there, as it might find benefit to greater than those 30% who are the ones editing it. In general, wikis work on the basis of a minority of writers, who write for the majority's benefit. This is the case for just about any large wiki. These are the numbers that I feel should have been expected, for something that would've been used. I don't think people are planning to make a page for every single one of their NPCs, either. So NPCs are worth only mentioning, others might have their own significant stories, etc, that would merit elaboration.
-
Would it be possible to maybe run a different poll? Maybe one asking something along the lines of if people would specifically be opposed to adding a section for NPCs? I could foresee a situation where, for example, someone might be in favor of having a section like this, without intending to use that situation for their own character. Given that we're trying to keep the quality of pages up, someone who focuses mostly on their main character and less on alts and storyline NPCs, might not use this feature. They might, however, still be reading about other people's NPCs, which would drive the number of people in favor up. I imagine that there would be more people okay with adding this as a category than those who would actively use it, much like I imagine more people would favor having a lore section on the wiki, than those who would contribute articles to it.

Blade is privy to Althyk, having been born under him. Blade takes a few characteristics of Althyk as well, namely in the change and time aspect. As I've mentioned (OOCly only, so far), Blade isn't my character's real name, and the reason behind it has a lot to do with how my character views names and how they can change people. In changing his name, there's also a bit of him 'starting over new and fresh' so to speak, or in other words, turning the hourglass over. Being brought up without much education though, and especially growing up poor on the streets, Blade hadn't really engaged much in the Twelve. Religion wasn't really something he focused on back when he was scrounging around for food. He had bigger issues to deal with. That being said, he was mostly ambivalent towards the Twelve. It was something he heard about but he lacked a real defining religious experience. Be believed they were there, though. But it was always something that he had difficulty connecting with. However, in A Realm Reborn, what little faith Blade had is going to take a serious blow. The Battle of Carteneau saw Eorzea razed under Bahamut's assault, with the landscape burning. When they finally were summoned, they did not have the power that Eorzeans would've hoped for, and were unable to seal away Bahamut. So, Blade's gonna be shaken by that, quite a bit. He's not going to regard them as being any greater than Primals. If anything, weaker. After all, from all that we've seen, Primals have been able to cause havoc and attack the Eorzeans, and when the Twelve were finally moved to action, they collectively could not stop one (although, a pretty damn powerful one). Will depend on how the RP plays out, but Blade may even initially be hostile towards the Twelve. There are some people close to him who will have died in the carnage that Bahamut unleashed, and Blade will probably angrily argue that the Twelve either aren't as powerful as they would have us believe, or that they simply did not put forth the effort required to seal Bahamut and let Eorzea burn.

Given that the servers are going to be divided up and changing anyways, what with the new region-oriented servers, I really can't see them making an RP server that would exclude/hinder already existing RPers. It seems like an all-around bad plan.

We really aren't concerned with how he feels about the matter. If he's making you uncomfortable, and harassing you, then that's that. He's crossed a line, especially if you have made it clear you don't like it. Don't let yourself get caught in thinking you owe him anything; he's some person on the internet that makes you uncomfortable. Drop him like a bad habit. Blacklisting will make it so that you can't see /tells from him or things that he says. It won't prevent him from running up and finding you in game, however, FFXIV is pretty big, and even if he can find out what area you are in, it'd be pretty difficult to track you down. That being said, and this goes for both FFXI and FFXIV, report his ass if he does that, and a GM will make it clear to him. /blacklist him before you call a GM, as well. That will always be their first suggestion for harassment. If he finds a way to persist and harass you regardless of that, then take it to the GM. Square-Enix wants their game to be a place where people can relax and have fun and enjoy themselves. They don't want it to be a place of cyber bullying, and they will take measures to ensure that stuff doesn't happen. Consider this too; if he's doing it to you, he might be doing it to others, so taking a stand may cause him to learn the error of his ways and second guess himself before harassing someone else. But the bottom line is, don't deal with his crap.

Hey there, punk, ...just kidding. Glad you finally made it!

Given that Blade Belisaire's name is actually an alias to begin with, I scarcely dodge a bullet here. But I did change his birth name. Aurick Demircan > Aurick Stonecraft. ^^

Yeah, they did say way back in the day that they would do this, so it technically isn't 'news news.' On the other hand, that was when Tanaka had his claws in the game and released it with flaws upon flaws upon flaws... I almost think its probable that we might've seen some shape of this take place in FFXIV 1.0 if it had continued on, but it probably would've been rather lamesauce. Tanaka did talk like he had a lot up his sleeve, but his chief error was that there wasn't enough in the game at launch, and especially when he spoke like he set it up like that on purpose... well, that doesn't go well.

Snagged this one from the dogs on Guildwork this morning. As part of Yoshi-P's media tour, he interviewed with JPGAMES.DE while he was in Europe. In this interview he talked about limit breaks, FATE, potentially new tracks from Uematsu himself... And... my personal favorite part... "...with the main storyline you will sort of need airships and also a ship. But not only prepared ships and airships. During the update we will implement a system, so you can build your own ship or airship with your own guild. You can make your own version." Check out the full interview here: http://jpgames-forum.de/jpgames-de-foren/news-rund-um-japanische-videospiele/23211-final-fantasy-xiv-our-new-interview-with-naoki-yoshida/
