  1. Agreeing with Verence as per usual. Not that I am offended by the naughty words, but there is a point where the shell becomes nothing but random chatter about nothing, for a long, long time. (Speaking of /random ). But yes, if there can be more people speaking up (without being made to look like, you know what, I feel that the atmosphere would lend itself to more RP or RP-based discussion rather than random chat spam. That said, I don't really think that there should be any hard set rules made. Just a bit of self-regulation.
  2. I feel like Gospel/Aysun/etc. are arguing against a stance no one here is taking. And while I can dissect each post and point out where I was misrepresented, I'll just quote my post above to nail it home, since folks seem to glaze over the parts they would actually agree with: (aka it's not feasible to expect the DM to have private chats with each participant, while controlling everything else. This is where the trust system comes into play, which Verence touched on. And I agree that a common style of RP when dealing with injuries does need to be set in stone, as certain LSs, Everwatch for instance, do take more liberty with injury/death when it makes sense.) The point: don't make a straw man and argue a point no one is making. No one here proposed to use it solely as a way to predict outcomes, as per Gospel's example. It's more akin to Verence's example, and for me personally, not even so much used in one on one, but in group settings. To throw my own example, an enemy mage casts AoE Fire on the group. Everyone can roll to see how much they got hit by the blaze. If you're a mage yourself who can resist the fire more easier... maybe it'd make sense for you to shrug it off even if you rolled a 35. However for less trained people a 35 can burn some hairs.
  3. I think it's fair to say that when dueling with another RPer directly, the use of /random may be more clunky than useful. However, things become more complicated in a large battle environments where there is a DM, who is in charge of multiple adversaries/story/environment. Relying purely on RP when dealing with multiple battles, as well as keeping all the factors in mind, both of individual participants, the group overall, environmental effects, specific perks one may have... This system begins to justify itself. While Lina wrote out the specifics, it's very much a guideline, as clearly there are moments where certain things would make sense, since all the roll results are very general, and do not take into account the character's strengths/weaknesses. And while Gospel mentioned the "luck" of getting low numbers, well, unfortunately that simply isn't true. There is no luck, it's a random number generator, and the patterns you may see in a short time are only there because it's hard for us NOT to distinguish patterns. We are pattern seeking animals. Aside from the note I mentioned above, where you can ignore the roll IF you feel it's IC'ly justified, sometimes stuff just doesn't work out. And sometimes, when you think you WOULD be able to succeed, it's not the case. Just as sometimes, when it seems that you wouldn't, you do. That said, another point I'd like to bring up from Gospel's reply is: You'd have to concede that, 1) Decent RP is absolutely subjective, and 2) Even if someone is typically a person you call decent, doesn't mean that they are when it comes to IC fights. Godmodding can happen, whether it's intentional or not. That's why I am in favor of using /random when it comes to large conflicts (and sometimes in duels) since it does offer some definitive value as a base for whatever action happens, which can then be accepted, rejected, or added upon. It's a system that is between the 'extremes' of using one's levels to determine the skill/outcome (which I also favor for pure skill comparison), and completely leaving things open to RP (which I use for specific traits of characters). I consider myself to be an alright RPer, and even then I prefer to check /random once in a while even in small fights just to offset any potential for godmodding.
  4. Yeah, thing is 2-3 years from now those graphics would no longer be 'awesome' ><. Even FFXIV graphics now seem a little lack-luster when compared to single-player, but then again new MMOs always tend to have worse graphics than new single player games. I am glad FFXIV is getting a face-lift come 2.0 though, it'll need it.
  5. New name? To me it seemed like OOC worked partly because of the simple name. I know you can't have two OOC's heh, so I don't know a way around it save for naming it "OOC" (unless there is a 4 letter minimum for LS names) or "Out Of Character II," other than that, maybe you have some good reasons for the name change. I wont be around to pick up a new pearl today, so hopefully we'll get in touch somehow.
  6. It would be nice though if they drew comparisons between games to size up the graphics. For example, the graphics are as good as Skyrim, etc etc..
  7. It wouldn't be odd at all. Why would it...? It's not like every character knows every single person in the game and thus if you appear out of nowhere my character will think you're some inter-dimensional alien You can just say in the bio of your character that she has already plenty of experience as a CON or w/e, I don't really see the problem. Maybe if you can elaborate on what is confusing to you..?
  8. Looks very interesting! It seems awesome based on what I read, but I am used to the hype being just that. Does this MMO step away from the typical Korean grind MMO's? Any idea when it would be out in the US? I've yet to read up on the known lore of the world, too but the variety of classes and what they'd be able to do seems interesting.
  9. Ah then you should get that OOC pearl and bust into the scene, see where you land. I must warn you though, that if things seem 'slow', it /is/ because of your playtime. Don't despair too soon though, there are others who are in that same playtime. :approve:
  10. I don't think we should cower from posting on the official forums, because you know... if we do, the terrorists trolls win.
  11. Assuming SE isn't planning on tagging any server RP friendly, what's the plan for consolidating RPers on our server? Many still aren't aware that there even is an RP community in FFXIV. I think this is one of very few opportunities to add interested RPers, or RP-friendly players to the new server.
  12. Hey welcome to the community! What kind of yoga is your favorite? As far as being IC full time, it's really not hard if that's something you /like/ doing. I myself enjoy the creative force of it, more than anything. I don't think it's fair to ask a new player to 'read up' on the past storylines, that would be ridiculous. However I do hope you have a more-or-less fleshed out character concept in mind, that can be honed later through RP and experiences. If you're not quite sure, I'm sure some people would be glad to help you out!
  13. I'd even go as far as saying that the OOC shell is a must for any RPer at this point. Welcome to the community.
  14. A note is pinned on top of the existing flyer. Thank you for coming, I hope this was a productive bell or two of your sun. If you enjoyed your training, look for other events hosted by the Everwatch in the near future! -Oskar Helvig (Thanks for coming guys it was a blasty-blast. Sorry that some things were a bit off, but it /was/ a first effort at hosting this type of event by me on a larger scale. We've learned many things from it, and will implement them next time around to have a more efficient fun RP time.)
  15. Posting in Eva's stead since she is out for the weekend. Everwatch Monthly Update V (Jan/Feb '12) Back in the Fold Eva here bringing you this month's Everwatch update. The past few weeks have shown some interesting developments for many of our members. For one, Oskar's been recovering nicely from his gunshot wound but decided to leave us all to the wolves so that he could return to the clan-lands for a couple weeks. With Rhio MIA and Deirdre having been ousted that left poor little Eva in charge of the company. So of course the HQ got some new curtains, and we all assembled for tea and crumpets twice daily to talk about our feelings and- Okay okay, I'm kidding. But it was a pretty daunting task for her. Luckily Syesta and the others helped make the time pass a little more quickly. A quest for a particular type of sand that was needed for Syesta's custom spectacles brought several of us out to Thanalan where it was eventually found - but not without having to deal with some bombs and other baddies first. Later in the week Eva was approached in Oskar's stead by the authorities from the Twin Adder to call upon the Everwatch to assist with foiling an Ixali plot to ambush a caravan headed from Hyrstmill to Gridania, carrying an important envoy. The trap was effectively sprung prior to the caravan's arrival and we are pleased to announce that he safely made it to Gridania... ...only to be assassinated by an Ixali marksman traveling in a dirigible overhead the following morning... Fun times! So again Eva was called upon to rally together the Watch to venture out to Coerthas where it was believed the airship carrying this assassin was bound for. A small group was successfully able to infiltrate Natalan, locate the airship, and eliminate all occupants just as it landed. And more importantly, get the hell out! But a few questions arise as a result of these most recent orders - Who was this emissary? Why was he assassinated? Or perhaps most importantly, why was a small detail sent out to Natalan on a mission of vengeance? These questions and more to be answered in next month's edition of As Eorzea Turns The Everwatch Monthly Update! But wait, there's more! (you didn't think that was all that happened this past month, did you?) Our very own Syesta successfully located the Garlean agent that had been stalking her and a plan was quickly hatched to go after him. Fortunately for us, Oskar was back from his underground vacation by this point so we were able to at least look imposing as we returned to Coerthas to get some answers. A confrontation with the well-armed Garlean doctor ensued and when things looked most bleak, an arrow from Manari - our newest recruit - struck its mark true. A key to a lock-box at the Platinum Mirage was recovered from his body and Syesta was able to get at least some answers to questions she had. At a Linkshell meeting, where those gathered discussed future projects, it was decided that Everwatch will be undergoing more training in the next month, as well as seeking to expand it's membership! While a lot of inactive members were removed from the roster, as well as others let go, those who remain are eager to contribute to the LS operations as a whole, and be proactive in their RP. For instance Syesta, who has been a very active member, was granted the "Archonte" position, which makes her a leader of sorts within the group. This leadership is also extended OOC'ly, so please do not hesitate to approach her with any questions/concerns be they IC or OOC! Aside from being an Engineer with her own assistant, Lina, she also heads Woodswatch, to which every member of Everwatch is now required to enroll. Others also had quite ambitious projects, and yet they were all focused towards a common goal. For those who have missed the meeting and haven't discussed how their character can contribute to the RP shenanigans that are going on, speak with Oskar asap! Last but not least, bonds are being formed between Everwatch and another company called Nebulous. This moderate RP Linkshell strives to assist other groups in both supplies and manpower. Currently both groups are getting to know one another, and are well on our way of signing an Affiliate Contract. If other groups or individuals want to RP with us, feel free to let us know by vising our External Affairs forum. We've plenty of events that anyone is free to participate in! In fact, the more the merrier! Members A warm welcome to our newest members! Rakka Berd Crowley Manari Lina Kailee Everyone brings a unique element to our RP and we look forward to hearing what these new voices add to the rhythm we already have going. Monthly Mentions Poll of the month: This month we asked members how their characters felt about the big LS meeting we had recently. The results... were astonishing. So-So: 1 vote It was alright: 6 votes Wasn't there: 1 vote Okay, maybe they aren't that exciting, but still. Report of the month: Syesta's report on what was found in her pursuers cache. Superb amount of detail as per usual, it's hard to beat Syesta's reports. The effort put into them is surprising every time. This one in particular is awesome because it summarizes what the story was about from an angle we would usually not see, as well as wrap up some lingering questions about what happened. Touche. Journal of the month: Lina's journal! Sebastian the mammet brings a unique flavor to Lina's journals, that are already quite interesting to read, since Lina has a bit of trouble speaking herself! I think it will be interesting to read her thoughts she otherwise cannot clearly express going forward, when the character forms more opinions about others and the organization she works for. A Look Forward The most recent events have shown a handful of us Watchers what Oskar's true intentions are for the company. Uniting the three nations under one banner to stand together against the threat from the North. A lofty goal, and one that almost certainly carries with it certain risks. Time will tell what the future holds in store for the Everwatch and it's megalomaniacal leader! PS We will be switching Monthly Updates to being posted around the first of the month, so the end of February will be added into March's update.

  19. Yes, if you are honest but tactless in delivering your opinion, you may get a defensive reaction. 1) Clearly the 'being honest' here isn't the problem, it's how you communicate it, and 2) there is a concern for the other person's feelings - by this I mean that you've assumed that they would get defensive, and that if they do, it would be your fault, or specifically the fault of you being honest. If whoever you are speaking to reacts poorly to you being upfront with them, I do not think it's your fault, provided that you tried to say it without insulting them, but rather it's their inability to deal with unfavorable feedback. This is not a case against being open with people, but more like the worst case scenario used to justify a clear wrong, that being disingenuous is bad. I am not sure who it would offend, other than two-faced snakes in the grass lol. And if someone recognizes themselves as one of those people, go ahead, get offended. I hate those type of people. You know, being friendly with you, saying they totally dig your storyline, and then turn around and talk smack about you behind your back. I really don't give a damn how they feel. Note also that I am not saying they to mask the identity of individuals, although I know a few who have displayed this behavior, I am simply stating that there is a portion of the 'population' who are like that, as opposed to others who I feel may do the same things, but not because they get a thrill out of it, but because they think being honest with someone is rude/negative. Again, I think you're using the worst-case scenario, when someone is honest but clearly has trouble communicating and keeping the conversation civil. This isn't because honesty in itself is a bad thing. There is no too much or too little honesty. It's either, you're up front with someone, or you're not. While I agree that in the ideal world, this might be the case, usually people don't keep things to themselves. That's how completely off-base rumors spread. You have a group of people who chose not to bring in the person they are talking about so that they can defend themselves, and talk about them to others, who may not even have interacted with said person, then they get some ideas with regards to someone they've never even met. Personally I get a lot this, random comments/critiques about my character from someone I often don't know/never RPed with. And their ideas of Oskar are so far off base that it's like... hmm I wonder who told them this, and why someone in this long line of the rumor mill just not sent me a PM, so that I can speak for myself. Some people would rather talk s*** behind someones back and never bother to check up on their assumptions. /shrug And when someone breaks out of the mold and actually RPs with me, I often get, "Wow... this isn't what I expected, I thought you/Oskar was a complete " lol That to me is pretty much an illness of this community. To ignore it is to foster it. I am not saying that this is a sole reason why there are rifts between people, but it IS a reason that wasn't brought up in a public discussion.
  20. This. A lot. Sometimes I hear back from what's been said either about me or my character, and I reel in disbelief, laughing. Not only is it false, it seems as if it's just made up completely and spread around! Part of me is a bit amazed at that. That brings me to another point, which is being honest and up-front with people should not be considered rude. If people felt comfortable telling someone directly how they felt, or some info they heard about them that was questionable, a lot of the backroom gossip wouldn't just marinate and escalate. Why does this happen? Well, to be honest, I think some people are just two-faces snakes in the grass! But aside from those people who feel compelled to do it, there are some who simply think it's rude to be honest with someone, or to confront them on something. I certainty have been made to feel bad about simply being honest and up-front with people. Latest example was that convo about Merri's arm. When I gave my opinion, I was pretty much called out for being a jerk (I don't remember exactly what was said) just because based on what I heard, I wasn't going along with it. And before people jump to conclusions, I think Merri can back me up here, I wasn't trying to tell anyone what to do or how to play, simply stating my opinion on the matter openly, to him directly, because it was being discussed. The lack of honesty between people corrupts any bonds of friendship and trust, adding often false rumors instead. That kind of behavior in the community erodes links between players, and thus diminishes our ability to play with each other.
  21. Uh, I said nothing else because I agree with Mnim, daily RP is something I crave as well because I feel like it's been segmented by 'events' a bit too much recently. I just dislike when people post on behalf of some group, same as I dislike passive voice, "there have been mistakes made," for example. Don't get hung up on it and make it out to be some attack, and yeah, what Verence said.
