That would be exceedingly silly and not intuitive at all, considering ACN is a dps class, while SCH is a healer. If your points don't change when you switch to a job from a class, you're going to have a lot of people leveling ACN and finding out that they wasted 15 or so points on INT. If that is the case, it is a very, very poor design decision.

You mean Free Company. xP Unity is a free company. And an RP-friendly one at that, which I would recommend to anyone looking for endgame in ARR! The vast majority of us are roleplayers, and though Unity itself is not an IC organization, that's not keeping us from RPing.

I wasn't talking about individual preferences at all. I was talking about actual class mechanic balance.

The greying of the MMO and what does it mean for RP players?

If we had Korea's infrastructure, we would be talking about a difference between 15ms (or less) vs maybe 50 or so. Which is virtually indistinguishable. -

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here and in fact haven't brought up the word "skill" at all in any of my posts in this thread. My post was in response to people likening a faster-paced game to mindless button mashing, which it is not. [edit] Incidentally, there's not all that significant a difference in ping between playing any given MMO on the east coast or the west coast or in the middle of the country or whathaveyou. Maybe a few tens of ms. -

You can avoid literally every attack a mob does in a game like TERA. Every attack has a "telegraph", even if it's just a very brief lifting of one arm. That is not the case for tab-target games, as most attacks from mobs are completely unavoidable. That pirate punching you in the face? He'll be punching you in the face even if you try to run to one side or behind him. That caster mob spamming fireballs at you? Those fireballs will hit no matter where you go. This turns tab-target combat into a race of "who can do the most damage fast enough", which takes a lot of the control out of the hands of the player. -

... You post a video of nexus to illustrate TERA combat. I am having so many lols right now. Nexus is a low-fps zergfest that everyone hates but they do it because you get need the crafting mats for the top tier endgame gear. It's awful and certainly not representative of TERA's combat. Try this video of a warrior soloing a smoldering moloch bam or maybe a video of . But definitely not the craptastic zergfest of nexus. [edit] Weird. I coded for URL links, but it embedded the videos anyway... ew. D: Bahahahaha yes. So true. -
I disagree, as THM/BLM and ACN/SMN bring extremely different damage tools to the table. Arcanist is heavily focused around DoTs and other debuffs (think affliction warlock, for those familiar with WoW), while thaumaturge has heavy burst coupled with a low-damage recovery phase. ACN/SMN will have ramp-up times and won't be very useful on short fights or against mechanics that require a lot of burst (think Ifrit's fetters), but once it gets going - and with the ability to multidot - it will be very good with multiple targets and whittling down a boss. Very different classes. A similar case can be made for SCH and CNJ/WHM, as we know SCH is likely to be very heavily focused around HoTs, while CNJ/WHM is primarily burst healing. Also to add, we know Squee intends to add second jobs for every other class over time, so this is not going to be an Arcanist-unique thing.

I'm sorry, but what you're saying isn't making any sense to me. Arcanist is not a hybrid class; it only does damage. You will put your attribute points into INT, all 30 of them. Jobs have separate attribute point allocations from classes, but apparently if two jobs branch from a class, those two jobs share attribute points. So if you do not have your crystal equipped for SCH or SMN and your character is currently ACN, you should have 30 points in INT. If you equip a SCH or SMN crystal, you will have 30 new points to play with, but only 30 between the two jobs. This is forcing people to choose one roll or the other, either healing (SCH, MND) or dps (SMN, INT).

This is rather not an accurate representation of WoW, let alone a "real action combat" game like TERA. In any game where there is competition, you are going to get players who want to be at the top. You will have it in ARR, and the slow-as-fuck 2.5 second GCD will not stop it, because ARR has dungeons and raids and PvP, so there will be people who min-max, and there will be people who compare their ability or accomplishments with others. That's just the nature of competitive gaming, be it developer-sanctioned (e.g. world or realm first achievements) or player-created (e.g. dps meters). I was very heavily into progression end game raiding and arenas in WoW for some time, so I'd also like to clarify that the "spamming buttons and winner takes all" perception is also very off-base. There was a lot of strategy that went into pretty much every button I pressed when healing a raid or in an arena; just because it happens ever 1 second instead of ever 2.5 seconds, doesn't make it a spam fest. That implies mindless button mashing, which even for heavily rotation-oriented dps classes is simply not the case. -

A kind of stale, half-baked biscuit complete with the same ping issues you have in other action combat MMOs but this time you're stuck in a tab-target game. D: That impatience (presuming you mean the "Go go go go tank go!" people) has nothing to do with the combat system. You get it in tab-target games with 1 second GCDs, tab-target games with 2.5 second GCDs, and action combat games with no GCD but animation locks, as well as the weird hybrids like GW2 and WildStar (which are basically just glorified tab-target games). The combat system is not what breeds impatience - that's just the direction of gamer culture in general. -
This is correct. Unless Squee pulls something random out of their asses, ARC and SMN will want INT while SCH will want MND. Base classes don't share stat points with jobs, though, so at least while leveling ACN, you can dump points in INT, and then... I guess you have to pick whenever you get access to your jobs. Really poor design in a game that encourages fairly frequent class switching. I get the feeling it was something they overlooked because the majority of classes right now only have one job.

This could only be the case if PIE has some as-yet-unknown bonus attached to it. Or I guess if somehow their spell power is attached directly to the size of their mana pool. Which I guess is possible, but that would make scaling really weird.

So much thiiiiiiiiiis. ARR with TERA's combat system would just... I have no words to describe the orgasm of joy I would experience. -
In a min-maxing environment, however, those 15 points can make a difference. This is really, really frustrating, especially considering how easily you can switch between classes. Jobs shouldn't be any different in that regard, but depending on how costly resetting your attribute points will be, this is just... incredibly silly. That and I find the whole mechanic of attribute points utterly uninspired (there's pretty much no actually interesting decision-making in this - you take whatever primary stat your class/job utilizes and put all points in it). Hngh. Gear has stat caps, which means there is only so much of a given stat you can add materia for until you have to add something else. Stats like MND, INT, STR and such tend to come very close to if not completely capped on the gear itself, which means materia is going to be used for 1) capping out a base stat if it hasn't already, and then 2) secondary stats such as spell/attack speed and such. So yes, you do lose something by going 15/15. You lose 15 whole points of your primary stat. It doesn't matter if you end up being able to slot 15 points of MND or whatever in materia - in the end, you're still short 15 points from where you would be if you had gone full 30.

Oh, hard question. My first instinct for Antimony was for her glasses, but while they a certainly a part of her image, I don't think they're really a part of her character except maybe in the most cliche sense (glasses = intelligence). But she just wears them because she's aging and her vision is going. So not very significant. My second thought was a compass - the kind for measuring angles and drawing circles, not for navigation. But... I don't know. Antimony certainly has a passion for her mathematics and aether theory. But does that represent her whole character? Dx Dilemma! Maybe this is a sign I just need to RP more.

Well. I don't really art very much, but I kinda shat out some ARR stuff, so... may as well link it here, huh? All goes on my dA page, such as it is. You can also follow me on tumblr, where I post my art as well as various RP and screenshots and other things revolving around my gaming and creative exploits. Exceedingly messy thing scribbled while on a plane Antimony and Ildur's character Ulanan, taking a hike together. Supposedly while they're walking through Thanalan as per some RP we did, but backgrounds? What are those? And to make matters worse, my scanner has developed a blurry spot in the lower righthand corner that refuses to go away! My girl Antimony, minus her glasses because I am a horrible person. I've done other stuff for other MMOs, including TERA, Rift, and WoW, as well as just random original crap and... well, whatever else (went on a Jak & Daxter spree a few years back). On occasion it may even qualify as art in some tertiary dimension! Hope ya'll enjoy. Mayhap I'll toss up some more stuff later.

August. xP If it was April, I think I'd die!

The best solution to this is having armor that is race-gender specific in model. TERA does this and it injects a fantastic degree of variety into the game. If a crap-tastic now-f2p MMO can do it, then Squeenix should be able to, as well!

I do have a Keeper, but with helping to run an LS, an FC, and being a driving force behind the organization of the Hipparion tribe... well, I'll keep an eye on this thread and consider tossing Sah'ot in for a very loose connection (her story would likely make it so she's not in much contact with any family group).
-
No worries, Seto. As long as we're all having fun, is what matters!

Oh I wish I had the energy to help with this. It's fun to have even just loose connections with so many other people. I wish you luck!
