Lancing and Dancing Without Dragooning

Recommended Posts

So I got my WAR to i120! Yay!

....and...now I'm completely freaking bored. So I'm looking to my loldrg to have something "game-y" to do until Heavensward or RP things happen (that I can take part in--I am completely removed from the FC storyline I'm in right now. Feel like a bit of an idiot.)

Anyrate, this is just for funsies, but I'm also sort of trying to brainstorm how Steel would actually wield a lance. I've always written her as a powerhouse, so moving to a class where she crashes her axe down into the ground to something that features nimble movements and manual dexterity is a bit...well it's jarring to watch her do, if I can be honest.

Not only is it just the movements of the lance but also all of the jumping. So many jumps and flips and spins that defy my headcanon's logic. I mean, I can ignore her being able to smash her axe blade into the ground and causing a wave of fire to erupt easily, but I can't write around her leaping around like a hypersonic flea.

So that's what this thread is about...any other spear-pokers have thoughts on this? Or should I just ignore the whole thing and focus on the funsies, assuming that her time lancing is OOC? I'd like to avoid that if possible, but...well, I'm out of ideas.

The weapon animations in XIV depict a very particular image of how they want you to fight. Imagine my surprise when leveling pugilist, and suddenly my gruff rough and tumble brawler was a flourishing martial artist! Warren doesn't do willy-nilly hand waving, he throws headbutts and tackles and haymakers. My headcanon of how the man throws a punch is completely different from how the game lets me demonstrate that.

At the end of the day, it's easier for me to just say "okay, proficient with X weapon and Y degree" and let the posting dictate the ability. I leveled DRG to 50 as well, and I expect Warren's got next-to-no idea how to wield a lance or a halberd (which are not interchangeable!). He's definitely not doing pole-dancing twirls and flips and stuff. Sorry folks.

So, uh... In short? If you don't see Steel flourishing, don't make her flourish. That's a ton of wasted movement that doesn't seem her style (to a casual observer anyway).

Why not try for a heavy armor lance wielding type Like Generals in FE?

The lancer moveset has bulkier wide swinging moves to fit something like that!

I have to agree. The Knight/General lunge in FE is quite heavy and visceral-looking.

....huh....yanno, I never actually considered that one...

Now I'm curious what items one could glamour to provide that effect....

the i100 and the warwolf gear should do fine, and Roe build should be able to sell it pretty well.

Can't do much for the shield, but the Wolfram set for DRG looks pretty nifty.

Stolen from reddit, here's the list:

Weapon: Holy Lance

Head: Darklight Helm (Cerulean Blue)

Body: Cuirass of Divine Wisdom

Hands: Iron Scale Fingers (Snow White)

Legs: Linen Gaskins (Snow White)

Feet: Iron Scale Greaves (Snow White)

Love Hilde!  I wrote Aya as an unorthodox Lancer - given her backgrund.  She uses movement, misdirection and body attacks trying to imbalance her foe and maintain a good distance.  I imagine more like Seong Mi-Na from the same game :)

pic: what I use for my "heavily-armored lancer" look. Most heavy-looking DRG armor is gonna be dungeon gear or pricey crafted stuff, otherwise you've just got scale mail, chainmail and generic DoW stuff to work with

Metallic Silver is a good look, though Wolfram stuff is a set where just about any color looks good, due to the material. The weird part is that all colors are actually a shade darker on the darklight stuff. So if you want your darklight gear to match something dyed, say, deepwood green, you'll have to die it nophica green. Woad blue to match ink blue, etc. it's weird
