What are your Character Flaws?

I'm sure there are a few players like me that think a characters flaws are just as important if not more so then their strengths. They can be physical, mental or even physiological problems but no matter what the flaws, they should be a way to give a character depth.   What flaws do your PC have?

 

My own, Asmodean Gaidin, has three major flaws that will effect rp for him greatly. First would be his family's Warrior soulstone and the trapped soul of a mad man within it. Training as a warrior has made it clear the soulstone has great problem with it and has slowly started to understand why he never heard stories of his mother every having use it while she was alive.

 

The next major flaw is Asmodean's lack of magical talent. While i have no idea how to write it off as part of him currently, I have found making magic cast on him less effect to go along with sever has a way to make it a known fact about him. 

 

Lastly for my PC, would be unhealing chest scar, which still sears with pain as if was freshly earned. A wound from the Calamity, Asmodean has taken it as sign he should have die then and he is alive only due to other refusing to let him go. Aside from the pain the scar still brings him, Asmo has become self-conscious about his body and so he rarely seen without wearing armor from head to toe. This has also made him avoid people who wanted to get to know him on a more intimate level, due to aforementioned wound.

Graeham's a half-breed and has Garlean blood in his veins. This is more of a drawback than a perk as his ability to manipulate aether is dampened significantly, he feels very ill after attempting to travel via an aetheryte and those who learn of his heritage usually end up distrusting him or even hating him given how many Eorzeans loathe the Garlean Empire.

 

Other than that? He's young - a mere nineteen years old. Whilst he boasts a silver tongue that helps him evade a lot of trouble he hasn't had much training in the ways of defending himself and isn't all that fond of harming people even when it comes to self defence. This is something that will take time to remedy and he's in the process of trying to find a fighting style that suits him.

Oh boy Aaron has many.

 

- Hes to specialized in blades. Even his magic skill relies on his use of blades. Sure he knows hand to hand but even THAT requires he gets an opening using blades.

 

- Hes strongly affected by words. Take grindstone for example. Everyone was getting on his case because he wouldn't inflict damage on people abd what happened? He wounded up trying to break a girls arm by stabbing through it in the finals. Depending in the situation words make or break Aaron's resolve.

 

- Hes scared to fight. Sure he used to be a violent little kid,  but now he's very hesitant about fighting to the death. That and he's scared he's not good enough to hold his own. Because of this there's even been times he's willingly let people assault him and not fight back. Only time this is void is if his sister gets threatened or involved.

 

- He wears no armor, him going up against a Roegadyn clad in darksteel with a axe is not a good idea.

[Ignacius]

Ignacius doesn't have any character flaws.  He's just a sociopathic and callous hitman and murderer who doesn't care how old his target is, what their situation is, or even if they deserve to be hurt, maimed, or otherwise terrified.  If it wasn't for the restraint he has to practice just to keep from being outed and arrested by the authorities, he'd probably have no problem telling everyone what he does and who he's been killing.

 

That's not a flaw, is it?

Chiyo can be naive, impulsive, reckless, and overall, a brat, but she's slowly growing up... She also didn't have any proper education growing up in the wilds. She isn't all that familiar with magic either.

[Manari]

Manari is a very proud and very traditional Keeper of the Moon girl. So proud and so traditional in fact, that she is not very accepting of outside cultures, especially Seeker culture. She can be a tad bit racist if she's feeling snarky or her own culture is being called into question. And if she's faced with someone who might be racist against Keepers, she will aggressively defend her people and her culture even if that means countering racism with more racism.

 

Sort of in line with that, if you take Manari out of the Twelvewood for any reason, whether its for a fun party on the beach or a work related task in Ul'dah, she will complain every step of the way about how much she hates both Thanalan and La Noscea.

Rakka'li had huge problems with impulse control and a depressive bend to his personality that caused him to lash out at people in very mean ways. The latter was occasionally so bad that RPers flat out disliked me OOCly because of it.

Flaws are always an interesting topic to talk about. What they are, why they have them, if they're flaws at all. Even whether the flaws exist for the sole reason of "they need flaws" or if it was something that grew organically out of the character concept.

 

Chachan, for example, is childish and quick to pout when things don't go the way he wants. His care and concern for others makes him often worry and try to stick his nose where it doesn't belong, possibly causing more harm when he's trying to help. And his belief that everyone has a good side - and that can be turned towards that good side - often puts him at odds with those with more pragmatic and worldly views on life in general.

 

He's a dorky little goody-two-shoes hero wannabe in a world that is more than willing to show him on a regular basis how horrible it can be. It's a flaw, sure, but you could also consider it a strength. He's always trying to help people, he's willing to give people second chances, and he's happy enough being that little bit of sunshine in an otherwise dreary existence.

 

Then there's Gogon. He's bright, talented, and ambitious. However, it's because of these things that he is arrogant, manipulative, and thinks he knows more than you do. He believes his way is the right way, that the only person he can expect to do things right is himself, and it would take a Herculean effort to convince him otherwise on either point. Pair that with a burning desire for revenge for the (assumed) wholesale slaughter of his family by the Garleans, along with a paranoia that they're coming after him to finish the job... and you have a guy on the fast track to going down in flames rather spectacularly. And - to his hope - taking down as much of Garlemald with him in the process.

 

And then you have Judge, an eccentric old coot with a distinctly black-and-white view on life and decked out in a full suit of armor that he never seems to take off. I'm sure you can think of plenty of things that might be wrong with him from that little blurb alone. :lol:

[Hammersmith]

Hammersmith is a custom built puzzle box that no one in their right mind wants to open and that has no intention of giving instructions, hints, or help.  He keeps his head, his mouth, and his secrets locked tight.

 

Paired with a lethal approach to honesty he's a Kool Aide man of sorts, often crashing into, through, and out of, situations with little regard for the wall/person/problem that got in his way or the consequences that come after the wall falls down.

 

And they wonder why he became a siege master.

Then there's the petty cultural things. Raised outside the culture. Conflicts inside the culture. All sorts of hate boiling over. She's just angry all the time. She can hide it when she's working, but try and talk to her alone, and you'll probably get punched or spat on, or she'll burst into tears and flee. That makes her really popular. Lots of friends. She's perfect.

[Nako Vesh]

Nako is brash, reckless, impatient, honest to a fault, and too trusting. She has little to no brain-to-mouth filter. She can be rather dismissive of men and largely views them as useless unless they've somehow proved themselves. She also has a somewhat dismissive view of other cultures unless they're similar to traditional Keepers.

[Chris Ganale]

Chao's greatest flaw is hubris. She believes that she's above the laws she deems useless and that she can handle the consequences that come of any actions she takes. So far, she's been right about the consequences, but her day is coming. One does not use soul-corroding forbidden magic without it coming back to bite you.

 

Ganale is a doormat with an inferiority complex the size of the remaining moon (does it even have a name?) and a passive-aggressive streak a malm wide. He believes everyone is out to get him or screw around with his feelings, but all that pales in comparison to how much he loathes himself.

 

R'tahz is a wide-eyed idealist who believes in the inherent good in everyone and is a white knight (whether the good or bad version of that term lies with the observer) par excellance. (It's a joke that his PLD gear is dyed pure white for that very reason). He's also, in most cases, way too forgiving, unless the individual in question has done something to earn his personal loathing (re: couerlclaw king)

 

Yuuna is not the sharpest tool in the shed. She also will not ever back down, be it from her standpoint on something or a battle (this doesn't mean she won't retreat from a lost fight). She is also insanely jealous, and will jump immediately to violence if someone accosts, threatens, or hits on Hotaru.

 

Seno has gun gremlins (this is a carry-over from his home setting). Put a firearm-type weapon in his hands and the odds are 50/50 whether it'll explode violently or just fall apart. This is more played for laughs than being an inherent flaw because he knows better than to pick up a gun. His actual flaws are his irreverence and being a bit of an instigator. He'll start shit to amuse himself. His retainer, Kazue, is far worse, however. She'll start shit specifically to get him in trouble.

 

Garon has a case of hubris as well, but not nearly as severe as Chao's. He's supremely confident in his skills and equipment (not that he doesn't have reason to), but has, on occasion, gotten himself in hot water because he banked too hard on his reputation to intimidate people into giving him what he wants.

 

Ghost is an insufferable womanizer. He'll hit on anything with tits, except for femroes, because he recognizes that they can break him in half. He also is a bit too unconcerned with the general attitudes of the rest of the populace. He'll say what he wants, everyone else be damned.

They're as bold and grand as her assets, but, ahem, perhaps not quite as shapely.

 

That said, I prefer for them to be discovered via RP rather than exposition!  I also consider "flaws" as a general subject entirely separate from "abilities" or the lack thereof.  Aya doesn't use magic, but that's not really a flaw so much as a fact of life (she's also not a blacksmith, a leather-worker, an amazing cook, etc, etc).  Her flaws are deep run faults that work to prevent her from being more than she is, and sometimes interfere with doing what would be best. 

 

That's of course.. beyond her generic blondness and ceaseless desire for shoes and baubles

Edgar has many flaws.

 

• Edgar is a bit of a wounded birdie. He's had many failed relationships, and even more failed attempts at relationships. This has left him depressed and distraught. When he sees other people happy with their significant others, it doesn't make him bitter as much as it provokes tears. The thing is, with Mimiko around, maybe Edgar's sadness is blinding him to what he already has...
  
• His mixed heritage leads to a confusing sense of priority when it comes to women. The Seeker part of him tells him to bed the girl, the Keeper part of him says to respect her leadership. 
  
• Edgar, having spent so much time introverted and anti-social, has had a lot of difficulties articulating his thoughts and emotions. This can make him hard to approach, sometimes.

Ganale and Edgar need to be drinking buddies.

Uther doesn't know anything about magic, he's new to advanced technology, and he doesn't fully get the morals and values of the world outside of Ishgard. It doesn't cause him to be lost and sad, but he just thinks they're rude, and assumes they're going to do the right thing. (Now he's been here long enough to assume they aren't going to do the right thing) He believes in fairness to a fault. He'd fight every opponent one at a time in a completely flat field with the same armor and weapons if he could.

Serylda's largest flaws are probably how compassionate she feels about everything, and how oblivious she can be. She has a big heart, so killing often isn't always something easy for her to do. Her obliviousness to things can often cause her to be too trusting of people or not really notice obvious things. A perfect example of this is how she hadn't even noticed her parents growing tension toward her for over 6 years. 

 

 

She's not an idiot by any means, she's actually very intelligent considering she lived within an aristocratic household. She can just be a tad slow with things and often very emotional. However she is aware of these issues, and actively tries to overcome them.

 

These issues are partly to blame from an aether imbalance she has due to having dark magic directly casted on her when she was a child. She lived obviously, albeit with some scars and memory loss, things like that tend to never leave people the same. I would never go as far as labeling her as mentally challenged, she can function perfectly fine on her own and has no other issues otherwise. 

 

She is just as stated, oblivious/over-emotional.

Maia's biggest flaw is being too caring/empathic. I realize that may not immediately sound like a flaw, but in her position as unwitting leader, it means she makes every decision based on her heart as opposed to calculated logic. Although she tries not to show it, she is also easily hurt by others and has many moments of weakness and self-doubt when she's alone.

 

She lacks self-confidence due to her backstory and her lack of experience with the nuanced social practices of the civilized city-states. She thinks everyone else is The Best And Most Amazing Ever, and thinks little to nothing of her own accomplishments.

 

She's a workaholic who will literally work herself into fatigue or exhaustion if left to her own devices.

 

In addition, she's extremely trusting of just about everyone, even when they give her solid reasons not to. In the proven face of betrayal, she'll forgive the other person with little more than an apology, which has been taken advantage of on more than one occasion. She's also blind, but that only inhibits open world/dungeon exploration really. Otherwise, she just sticks around the Host Club and can handle routine work well enough. When she goes out to do other work, she has to rely on others for detailed or unfamiliar navigation, but can otherwise function with the use of her walking stick.

You're confusing empathy with irrationality. They're separate things. You can be highly empathetic and rational at the same time.

EDIT EDIT: Also that first edit isn't a dig at you Maia. Being unable to make rational decisions because of your feelings is definitely a flaw.

She has difficulty controlling a strong murderous impulse. Actually, it might be that she was born to use violence to solve her problems. She can act selflessly now, but largely due to wanting to please people close to her. Internally, she doesn't really care about strangers or their suffering, and often questions what exactly she's feeling and whether it has any real applicability to the situation she's in. Maybe her reaction is wrong, or too strong, or not strong enough. Virara doesn't really know for certain because she has neglected introspection and she was never trained to understand her feelings. So in effect two flaws, the inability to apply emotion to others except in vague, fairly uncontrolled ways, and the inability to fully understand them.

 

She has excessive emotional dependency and is stubborn about her goals. She focuses entirely on the Master she pursues and has yet to blossom into a fully fledged thinking being. In the sense of judging others and being wary, learning how to survive, she can be vicious and opportunistic, yet emotionally easy to blindside. She is naive in that sense.

 

A selfish desire to monopolize those she cares about. It is alien to her to think of others than herself, and she doesn't want them taken away due to her emotional immaturity. Actually, I guess this could all be summed up as emotional immaturity in general, lol. It's a common thing with me to make characters with powerful talent, intellect or skills, but fragile socialization or lack of common sense.

Oh lord, where do we even begin?  

 

-Can't read

-Overly trusting

-Halfbreed, got the worst qualities of both races

-Not very clever

-Socially retarded

-Has no particular talents

-Afraid of lalafells 

-Gets lost easily

 

On the upside, she's very friendly!

Being what she is, Memenu is fairly intelligent, but very naive due to how long she's been in existence.

 

She's rather gullible, very childish and above all; very short tempered. Almost to the point of being completely irrational in her dealings with others.

 

While she isn't "socially retarded", she does have serious problems not making a scene over her dislikes, though everything she sees she looks at with a child-like curiosity. Until it either angers her or she doesn't find it interesting.

 

She dislikes Elves in general and believes Miqo'te are a race created from lalafell who were unworthy of being lalafell.

True enough. Negativity isn't the same as weakness.

 

Qhora's bad at getting along socially. She's bad at self-soothing or maintaining calm. She's bad at empathy, at understanding why other people do things or why she should appreciate or care that they do things. She's bad at singing and art. She's angry and emotional, and while she's decent at general avoidance to dwell/indulge elsewhere out of the public eye, she can easily become part of a gang or instigate and encourage bullying of others if she's not alone in her rage in any given moment.

M'isha has flaws I think are typical of many teenager characters or in real life too!

 

• Narrow mind about what is good versus evil

• Idealized view of the world

• Emotional immaturity

• Dependency on role models vs. personal self-esteem

• Fear of the unknown

• Overly unaccepting that violence can be necessary

• Lack of ability to admit personal mistakes

• Focus on what makes her feel good vs. greater good in the world
