Letter from the Producer LIVE Part XXIII Q&A Update Thread

Recommended Posts

Well allgivenover confirmed it, the kid in Mor Dhona also has a stubby tail, so that's a trait of Miqo'te children apparently.

It's still a bit curious, however, since that could easily also be a trait of half breeds. Given the nature of Lalafell, I wouldn't put it past them for Lala-hybrids to just end up looking like children of the larger races.

The more curious thing is why they would say "please look forward to future development" if they have absolutely no intention of making playable children, on a question that specifically asks whether or not they will be playable (as a race, not as children). I can't parse anything from that statement other than "a playable race that looks like that will be coming". Could be a new race for all I know, but something in that vein is probably coming down the pipe.

I think in this case, SE is trying to make an effort to show more children in the game because players kept asking about them. Do to how different the models and animations would be to scale, it's safe to assume that we likely wouldn't be getting a child option for any of the playable races for now. It'd basically count as a brand new race because they would need to make new animations.

The answer to that question was really confusing. I sincerely doubt they will ever allow children to be playable. That just isn't going to happen. So what does it mean then? There's a very good chance that we are just looking too much into the vague response. I'm certain both of those NPCs are just NPC children like you see all over the cities for other races.

And that's not quite what I meant about the ears. Yes I have been told that cat's ears grow faster than their heads. But those ears on the children aren't even the same shape, and they look bigger than the adult Miqo'te ears.

She's the same height, body shape, and facial profile as the one in Mor Dhona, and has the same tail stub.

Perhaps the comment was just unintentionally misleading.

I dunno? Maybe? If not for the comment I wouldn't have thought of her as anything but a mysteriously placed Miqo'te child.

Regarding the "children will never playable", I'd like to point out at FFXI, where we are able to receive child "glamours", under which we simply cannot fight monsters or use abilities. We can wander around and emote with them, exactly like children who cannot fight. So I wouldn't think it'd be too far of a stretch to give the same feature to XIV as well.

I know the event you are talking about and it was just a very limiting glamor type buff that let you run around just that section of the city as a child. You couldn't leave the city with it still active at all. I'm sure something like that is possible, but I don't know if they have animations for running and walking and emoting created for children in FFXIV yet.

It got mentioned about that specific girl, correct? Maybe the "please look forward to it" is more a sign that she will be part of a quest chain or something similar down the line - so we get to find out more about her and what her heritage may or may not be. That could be something they may not want to reveal yet, hence the statement.

2. They are simply saying they will be adding more child NPCs over time.

I am almost certain this is all they are doing. However, Gegenji probably has the right of it with the actual meaning of that answer. I'm certain all it meant was to please look forward to more information about that random little Miqo'te girl standing alone for seemingly no reason. I'm sure there will be a quest or somesuch involving her.

I feel like the "playable" part of the question is too important to just be ignored or brushed away like that.

I mean, if the answer is a non-answer to that part of the question... well, that makes it a pretty crappy answer, heh. :P

He answered it. He said it's hard to make characters with limited facial expression sets. Aka it would be hard to do all the emotes and such they need with a doe eyed little kitten child.

They did, but then, they didn't. "Difficult to implement" can also be a code phrase for "it takes time".

But whatever, I guess I will have to accept that my dreams have firmly been crushed and I can go back to looking forward to nothing when it comes to playable races for the foreseeable future.

(Oh, if only it weren't for those dastardly PS3 limitations...)

That is exactly how I interpreted the answer as well... However, I'm not sure I agree with that sentiment. Cartoons, particularly anime, began using a design for their characters that used very overly large eyes as a way to make the characters more expressive. I just don't see how that adorable little Miqo'te girl would make it harder on the devs to give her expressive emotes. Just look at the Lalafell. They have (in many people's opinions) the best emotes of all races. They are very expressive and full of emotion in their actions and animations. So is that really what the answer was trying to say?

"Please look forward to future development." is an answer to the first part of the question ("What is with the small Miqo’te that can be seen in that one area?").

"It’s difficult to implement races that have expression limitations and other issues." is an answer to the second part of the question ("Is this something we will be able to choose as a new race in the future?").

"By the way, Lalafell heads are too big to treat them as children!" is an answer to the unspoken rebuttal that "wait, Lalafell look just like them and they don't have 'expression limitations'!, thus firmly crushing any dreams of such a thing becoming a playable option in the near future.

It still makes no sense, really, but that's what I've gotten from it.

Please take the time to actually read the question and then the reply eh?

First part, look forward to this development. Obviously the miqo'te children have a presence in both Idyllshire and Mor Dhona -after- certain quests. So, look forward to more story!

Second, asking for it to be put in the game for us to play. It's got severe limitations.

Lastly, the question is about children and everyone keeps talking about lalafell as [evil] children so he's trying to say "STOP SAYING THEY ARE CHILDREN. THEY'RE NOT."

But they are evil!

Fite me m8.

The sultana is not evil. ; ; Neither is Kage. He's just a doof.

95% of lalas you encounter could do with a good stomping. People rail against moogles but at least they're not actively trying to deceive you. They're just dumb.

Hello, got any numbers to support this?

Regardless of their answer, I'm still going to campaign for playable hybrids OR AT LEAST LESS CRAPPY CHARACTER CREATION.

It's really dumb how often they blame character creation limitations on this or that limitation when they keep adding more hairstyles and added an entirely new race. Like, really? How long are those excuses going to fly?

When even just the suggestion of hybrids gets me into a tizzy, it's really bloody lame that they keep stomping all over my hopes and dreams like this. Grumble, grumble, mutter, mutter.

I am going to politely ask you to make your own separate thread for this. If you would like to discuss further other things that were addressed in the Q&A that is fine but I would prefer you take this line elsewhere

No, I'm done. There's no point going on and on about the topic when it's been done to death already. I'm just venting at this point.

Misreading the initial answer made me get my hopes up for a bit, so having them dashed again has made me moody, that's all. I'll be over it in an hour or so.
