Caspar Posted November 17, 2015 Share #26 Posted November 17, 2015 How you people do to eat Curry... I tried it once and I had my mouth on fire for a whole week... It depends on the curry variety. Japanese curry tends to be very mild, so even someone who is sensitive to spiciness can eat it. Of course some varieties add more spice than others, but even those pale in comparison to mild Indian curries often enough. They are much more about being a comfortable blend of sweet and savory, I think. Actually, a lot of food that is considered curry can be pretty vague, come to think of it. I've heard that chicken makhani, which is popular in the UK, usually cooked in "masala" mixed spices curry, is a good example of that. There was a poll that surveyed a large number of restaurants, and the only common, consistent ingredient between all the restaurants was... chicken. ^_^' Link to comment
Avira Posted November 17, 2015 Share #27 Posted November 17, 2015 Hmmm... Well it admit the panned chicken looks delicious here in this thread. Especially the NYC one. But yeah having had my mouth in pain for a week after trying said cury once. I am not sure I'd be able to try it ever again. Link to comment
13uddy Posted November 17, 2015 Share #28 Posted November 17, 2015 I haven't had any form of curry in YEARS. I want some badly, but every time I mention it, the people around me say "Dude, you can't have spicy food, remember" and I facepalm since not all curry dishes are of the super spicy variety. That is like saying all chicken is fried chicken, or all peppers are hot peppers. It just isn't accurate. Unfortunately, there are no restaurants with curry dishes in my area and nobody I know makes curry dishes. And since I'm not allowed to cook (long story), I'm left without any options for the time being. The closest I can find is this awful prepackaged stuff that tastes like processed sludge, and that is not a suitable substitute even if it wasn't too spicy. I wouldn't feed that stuff to my worst enemy. Link to comment

Kage Posted November 17, 2015 Share #30 Posted November 17, 2015 I actually like the S&B Golden Packs that Steel mentioned over the House Curry brand. I used to make a large batch and would mix med. hot + hot together. Link to comment
Roen Posted November 17, 2015 Share #31 Posted November 17, 2015 Good thing I had some curry last night, else this thread would make me crave it again! I go with S&B Golden Packs as well. Tried and true! It's a tradition in our household. And I am with Kage, mixing med hot and hot together. As for green curry, I made it once and it was a pain! I prefer to make Japanese curry over green curry, and just order the latter from my local Thai place. What I had trouble finding the most is Thai basil to make it from fresh. Link to comment
Kage Posted November 17, 2015 Share #32 Posted November 17, 2015 What I had trouble finding the most is Thai basil to make it from fresh. You should be able to find Thai Basil at asian grocers like 99 Ranch market. If not, you could actually grow it by using left over basil from Pho places! I don't remember how exactly, but I remember my mom snipping off some of the leaves but using the stems to start growing it herself! In terms of some other curries, I don't typically make my own thai curries, not being too much into coconut milk, but I swear I've seen this brand with my Thai neighbors. http://www.amazon.com/Mae-Ploy-Panang-Curry-Paste/dp/B000EICJWA/ref=pd_sim_325_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41i495sEMJL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1VH4MS569QQY1GCJGWAC Also, I like this brand of coconut milk when i do use it. http://www.amazon.com/Chaokah-Chaokoh-Coconut-Milk-13-5-Ounce/dp/B00473PVVO/ref=lp_8135897011_1_1?srs=8135897011&ie=UTF8&qid=1447800272&sr=8-1 Link to comment
Meis Knifebearer Posted November 18, 2015 Author Share #33 Posted November 18, 2015 How you people do to eat Curry... I tried it once and I had my mouth on fire for a whole week... That's part of the fun! I enjoy spicy foods. I once ate a a Japanese steakhouse and I asked the chef how hot he could make curry? He told me that he once had to call an ambulance to get someone's stomach pumped. Whether he was serious or not, I told him to 'bring it on'. That was without a doubt the hottest curry I ever had. My face went red and I had trouble eating and thinking straight for about 10 minutes. I still ate despite that and when the numbing feeling went away, I finished my whole meal off. He called me 'Red Dragon' from that day forth. Link to comment
Oli! Posted November 18, 2015 Share #34 Posted November 18, 2015 Half my family is from Trinidad and Tobago, so I grew up on curry. It is the One True Food. Link to comment

But they only sell this one kind in my town and that specific kind is just terrible. Sorry for not clarifying that! Link to comment
