Oli! Posted December 23, 2015 Share #1 Posted December 23, 2015 So since there's a thread up for Blade and Soul, I thought I'd see if anyone was playing the vastly superior other Korean MMO that's coming out, Black Desert. The first Beta just ended, and I think there's supposed to be one more. Personally I thought it was quite fun. There's an RP community up for it if anyone's interested in that as well, though it seems to be rather small at the moment. Link to comment
Siha Posted December 23, 2015 Share #2 Posted December 23, 2015 I have this marked down on my must try list, I was only recently introduced to it so I know very little but everything looks great. I like the sound of the story and the classes are definitely intriguing! Link to comment
Verilys Posted December 23, 2015 Share #3 Posted December 23, 2015 After playing CBT1 to a very casual and quiet degree (only getting to about levels 10-13 with three characters), I have to say that I find myself really, really, really wanting to RP in the world that they've made. Link to comment
lyrax123 Posted December 23, 2015 Share #4 Posted December 23, 2015 I remember watching their character creator video and being pumped for it! So excited! Link to comment
Oli! Posted December 23, 2015 Author Share #5 Posted December 23, 2015 u1E1HKmCA4Q For some reason I'm extremely pumped for more of this game's music, I have no idea why. A lot of it is really amazing (even if I spent most of my time running around to Sounds of the Shire in the beta). The minstrel music really grabbed me somehow though, and now I'm obsessed with it. Also, RP site is here. Link to comment
Branson Thorne Posted December 23, 2015 Share #6 Posted December 23, 2015 I've been waiting for this game since I saw the character creation.:bouncy: Link to comment
Dogberry Posted December 23, 2015 Share #7 Posted December 23, 2015 This game looks really good! I'll try to get into the beta to check it out. Damn, I am really going to have to upgrade my PC. The graphics look so good! Link to comment
Oli! Posted December 23, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted December 23, 2015 Damn, I am really going to have to upgrade my PC. It's actually entirely possible that you won't have to, I would suggest trying to run it first. It's extremely well optimized, much to my surprise. If you can run XIV, I guarantee you that you can run Black Desert on at least one setting above whatever you currently have XIV on. I have no idea how they got it to run that smooth, but it does. Somehow. Link to comment

Yeah, I game on a laptop so I was crazy concerned that I would need some sort of upgrade, but you'll be absolutely fine. It's also worth noting that even on medium settings the game still manages to look fantastic (to be honest, "medium" settings in this game is another MMO's "high" anyway). Only real graphical problem that I encountered in the Beta (and that a lot of people did) is that there seems to be a high degree of pop-in, but apparently that's being looked into. The playerbase seems divided on whether or not that's due to graphical capability or latency, though. Link to comment

Altitis Acquired Posted December 23, 2015 Share #12 Posted December 23, 2015 It looks beautiful, but the gameplay looks utterly boring! Even when MrHappy streamed doing the beta, he said he was so bored playing the game. So much that he decided to go play FFXIV instead, even though he had planned to dedicate the stream to just playing Black Desert. So yeah, I'm very skeptical. Like I said, it is really beautiful, but I don't play a game for graphics alone. Link to comment
Oli! Posted December 23, 2015 Author Share #13 Posted December 23, 2015 I actually found the gameplay to be crazy fun, since it's the same sort of action-based things that are cropping up in other games like Blade and Soul, with dodging and combo-based inputs and button combinations and all that. Though I do find some classes to be more fun / play differently / attack faster than others, so depending on what he was playing I might have another opinion. So far, Sorceress has been my favorite to play because of the speed, but I'm also looking forward to Blader as well. Link to comment
Unnamed Mercenary Posted December 23, 2015 Share #14 Posted December 23, 2015 I'll probably end up giving the game a go just for the graphics, to be honest. That character creator in the betas looked AMAZING. ...and if it's really that free form and optimized, I'll probably try using it just for 3D posing and expressions. The perfect tool for artists! Makyn Loneseeker Posted December 23, 2015 Share #15 Posted December 23, 2015 I've been following Black Desert for some time now (not closely, but I'll go back every now and then to see what's happening) and all I can say is i'm pumped for it. It looks glorious and I can't wait to get into it when it finally fully comes out. Side note, there isn't much RP mechanics in place yet, apparently, so that is still sort of a problem. Hopefully, and maybe with some pushing from its community, they'll add stuff like emotes. *Unpopular opinion incoming* It looks a lot better than anything FFXIV is to me. The combat looks amazing (which I've never really found FFXIV to have), there's actually a substantial character creation (unlike FFXIV, even runescape has a better character creation system) and... I dunno, lol. It just feels better. Link to comment

Hopefully, and maybe with some pushing from its community, they'll add stuff like emotes. There are animated emotes, but no /e or /em style emotes (which isn't too bad for a lot of people, it seems). The way that animated emotes come about are a little odd, because they become available as you level up and play the game for some reason, I'm not sure why. The strange thing about them though is that in addition to /slash commands, emotes can also be triggered naturally through dialogue. It's a little awkward at first, but apparently you can change the words that trigger them in order to make them seem more natural. So for example, by default, if you type something like "I'm not going to do that," or "No, I haven't seen him," into your chat bar, your character will do a /no emote as they speak. It's got the potential to be pretty cool and smooth, though it'll probably require a lot of individual tweaking in order for people to get it to line up with the way that they usually type. Telluride Posted December 23, 2015 Share #17 Posted December 23, 2015 Been watching this game, and liked how it looked, but most of what I hear is that it is heavily weighted towards pvp, which means I want nothing to do with that. When I want pvp, I never look to an mmo. We already have plenty of pretty games for that, and BD just doesn't seem to be catering to the sort of audience I tend to want to be in. Wish it were otherwise. It looks great. Link to comment

AND THE DESERTS THAT ARE IN THE GAME AREN'T EVEN BLACK! THEY'RE JUST NORMAL DESERTS! THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISING OF THE WORST KIND! Link to comment

Wish it were otherwise. It looks great. I wouldn't say it's weighted towards PvP, but open-world PvP is a thing that happens when you reach level 50 or so. There are PvP activities that happen between guilds, but the only thing that it really seems your forced to do PvP-wise is just the standard "people can kill you in the open world" thing. To be fair though that is a thing that a lot of people aren't interested in. I'm not too sold on it myself, but I'm probably going to tough it out for the rest of the game anyway. Link to comment

Oli! Posted December 23, 2015 Author Share #21 Posted December 23, 2015 Haha, speaking of... Why is it called Black Desert in the first place? According to lore, there was a civilization before those that are currently around that used a material that people now call "Black Stones" as a power-source. There's a bunch of them in ruins in a stretch of desert claimed by another country, so one country that wants to lay claim to the region started calling it the Black Desert. They went to war with the country that controls it, sandwiching and practically annexing several other countries in-between in order to get to it. If I remember right, the war was eventually fought to a stand-still, and both sides retracted before trying to acquire more stones through other means. Apparently, the other country in the war calls it the Red Desert, after how many of them died defending it. 1 Link to comment
Larson Posted December 23, 2015 Share #22 Posted December 23, 2015 As a confirmed lord and high priest of customization sliders, I was absolutely enthralled by the level of detail available in character creation. It's on par with a next gen Perfect World. Problem is the rest of the game. Gender-locked classes. Currently, classes that should easily be open are locked. To make matters worse, MOST of the available classes are locked to Female. There are two male locked classes and a Giant, which is barely human. There are two non-locked classes. Also, while I like not having to roll Holy Trinity heal/dps/tank, I do not like the idea that this is a Potion game. PVP is "who can avoid the zerg". There aren't really any dungeons to speak of, nor do I see where this is going. Like the other releases of BD, this is a pile of shit wrapped in a pretty package. Link to comment

In Blade and Soul, the classes are only race-specific, but it's still a bother. I hate it even more when they are gender specific. Link to comment
Larson Posted December 24, 2015 Share #24 Posted December 24, 2015 Blade and soul is looking better so far. My issue is that it looks like a fetish game. One of those 18+ MMOS they advertise when you google too much porn. Link to comment
