So I'm studying to get my bachelor's in Creative Writing, and with the class I'm in now we recently had to do this assignment where we filled out an incredibly comprehensive and detailed character planning sheet. Things you never thought to ask yourself about your character before, in some of these categories. So if you're developing your character for RP, this might help.

Important features of home: Ishgard – dresses, jewellery, blankets and a hearth. Her window is stained class and looks out across the city. It catches the morning sun in a way the woman appreciates. Inn – Letters, books, and two satchels to carry it all. Two sets of cards, one standard and one themed to Limsa Lominsa, with ships and anchors. A carved bird, ornately and delicately made, sits on the back corner of her desk, beside her writings to and from home.

This eccentric Xaela would have quite the story to tell - if he ever told it to anyone. As it is, the true details of his past are a secret to all, despite the various rumours that abound.

 

He was raised by the tribe Isüsiregen. Notorious for infiltration, manipulation, and utter destruction of any who they targetted, this small tribe did not treat their own much better. Aghurlal's father - the tribe leader - was displeased at Aghurlal's birth, and killed his mother for it. Many more horrors were visited on Aghurlal by his family long before he reached adulthood.

 

One night, Aghurlal did something against his father's laws: he took a lover from outside the tribe. Said lover paid for Aghurlal's trespass with his life; Aghurlal was distraught, but feigned stoicism. That night, he took his father's prized weapons - a pair of twin daggers named the Fangs of the Father - and went from tent to tent with them, slaying all who had wronged him. At the end of the night, he'd spared only a handful of individuals.

 

Even having had mercy on those he believed were not evil, Aghurlal knew he would never again go by the name of Isüsiregen. He took supplies to travel with, gave his lover funeral rites, burned the camp, and ran - never to look back.

 

Shortly after arriving in Eorzea, he was picked up as a mercenary by the powers that be in Ul'dah. However, on his first mission - to investigate a recent slew of Amalj'aa kidnappings - he was captured and submitted for tempering. He survived alone against Ifrit until, miraculously, a group of heroes arrived to fight by his side.

 

Afterwards, the heroes helped ensure he was returned to health, and even helped him obtain a chocobo and the services of two retainers. Yet even for all their kindness, when they told him he had a special gift - the "Echo" - and asked him to fight more Primals with him, he declined. He'd been plagued with terrors by daylight and flashbacks by night since fighting Ifrit, and simply could not bring himself to do it all over again.

 

He fled to Limsa Lominsa on the next available boat. Believing strongly that he should be able to choose his own fate, he's purposefully avoided any further run-ins with the call to heroism. He makes active effort to conceal his Echo - simply keeping his head down, integrating himself as best he can into the society of Limsa Lominsa, and trying to build something better for himself.

BACKSTORY: I am making this brief:

 

Cecily was born in Gridania. Her parents were killed when she was two. She mostly learned from an old Auri man that looked after her every now and then (and sometimes Kan-E-Senna). Once she was ready to be on her own, she set off into the world. She eventually began magic teachings from a Dimensional Witch who taught her some rather philosophical understandings for several years. After her teachings, she found herself in Ul'Dah, where she now pays rent in the Quicksand Inn and lives with Momodi.

It would be less fun to just know stuff and not find them out ICly, so I trust other RPers to use what I write OOCly with discretion, and that rule applies to this as well.

Origin of Nickname: Only known and used by her Master. Derogatory. It was in reference to her appetite and her race's generic figure. Pigs are also surprisingly clever, but her Master belittles her intelligence, so the indirect compliment is dubious.

Place of Birth: Unknown, possibly South Sea Islands or an island community in the Sea of Jade.

A threadbare leather coat, her dhalmelskin climbing jacket, a variety of loose shorts, black leather boots, a few loose, fraying shirts. Often wears just a cloth sash over the chest as an undershirt/undergarment. Virara owns nicer clothing gifted to her by others, but those were more to the proclivities of her friends, and she wouldn't be caught dead wearing a skirt by choice. Almost all her favored clothing tends to be unisex or masculine, either warm or easy to move in, and most importantly, cheap.

Special jewelry: A wooden magatama earring she may have carved herself, a pair of converted arrowhead earrings (To fit in), rose quartz peach-blossom earrings (Gifted, never wears them.)

Hair color: Faded maroon, dyed to resemble Doman black, but ends up looking purple.

Hairstyle: Loose, small pigtails tied high with ribbons. A bit messier and smaller than the game can portray.

Grooming: Careful brushing, takes care of her hair more than anything else in particular. Uninterested in cosmetics and doesn't have much need of them anyway. She's been considered cute before despite her behavior, and some other Lalafell seem to see her as statuesque, for one of their kind anyway. Despite this, she does little to maintain it.

 

Additional information: Zealously sticks to the same exact look without fail. Violently resists attempts to change her hairstyle from what Master gave her, and never allows others to see her without the eyepatch.

Accent or dialect: In Doman, speaks in a rough, low class, masculine way, similar to her Master. In Eorzean, no accent to a conspicuous degree, extremely literal, some odd turns of phrase, but otherwise conversant.

Voice tone: Very quiet, breathy, monotone. In Doman, much the same, though noticeably more rude.

Demeanor: Icy to the point of resembling a lifeless doll until she moves or speaks. When in combat, an intense, unsavory zeal surfaces from deep within, though it is muted and filtered through her flat affect. Outwardly uninterested in conversation, blunt to a fault and extremely literal. Sometimes almost childish in her curiosity, but hides it as well as she is able.

Mannerisms: Loosening and tightening her hands at the approach of others, glancing at the hands, feet, and chest of any new face in one motion.

Gestures: Nodding, scratching her chin in thought, pressing a hand over her heart, flexing her fingers and knuckles.

Habitual behaviors: Staring, even when it would be rude. She stares with such intensity that it's honestly pretty creepy, even for people she seems to get along with.

Posture: Straight, with a relaxed yet tense attitude that betrays her martial arts training to the initiated.

Current occupation: Sellsword (Unofficial). Previously vagrant, laborer.

Level of job satisfaction: None in particular. Work only interests her insomuch as it provides food, gear, and shelter. If it can enhance her training, so much the better.

Income: At Neverfar's Tavern discretion. Some side money from the few leves she can acquire and day labor jobs. Almost all of it used up by food and maintenance costs.

Professional skills: Many minor skills, but nothing to a professional level. At best she is an unskilled laborer with some background in gardening and fishing. No experience marketing herself or negotiating a contract. Frequent accidents and damage to tools/products make her ineligible for most work. 

Combat skills: Martial artist (Extreme proficiency), rope dart (Improvised weapon), throwing objects at lethal velocity. Stealth and burglary proficiency. Focused stare occasionally can cause nervous torpor through unknown, possibly hypnotic means, but this is unconscious and accidental, very rare. Understanding of common and uncommon martial arts styles. Observational insight. Focused, meditative mind. Acquired immunity to common animal and alchemical toxins. Minor knowledge of torture methods. Not very skilled at military strategy or squad-large scale tactics. 

 

Additional information: Virara cannot use magic. An attempt to teach her how to open a Chakra failed, though the potential is there given sufficient time. It is unknown whether her aetheric condition is physical or the result of a mental block.

Overall quality of living conditions: Spartan, but that's how she likes it. She owns very little aside from training equipment, books for cultural study, a few large sacks and a bedroll.

Home décor: Nothing, except for an out-of-place bonsai tree. Her living space is otherwise devoid of personal touches. 

Important features of home: (Top Secret) Her collection is hidden in jars under her bed. Virara never admits to having hobbies, stressing that her training is the only thing that matters, yet despite this she finds herself unconsciously drawn to collecting bugs.

Describe vehicle: He looks more like a crow than a Chocobo at times, such is his unattractive, inky coat and long coarse feathers. He may be a mutt of various Chocobo breeds, or some outlier. He can glide short distances in a manner similar to the aether-riding Ishgardian Black Chocobo, but he generally refuses to do this with Virara on his back. Though he hates her, he always comes eventually if she whistles-just at his own leisure. Tebasaki likes Curiel roots and biting people. He dislikes anything smaller than him and hates anything larger than him. His "hobbies" are bullying the weak and wandering aimlessly looking for females. (A quest doomed to failure given that they're generally monopolized by the Ishgardian stables, but he is stubborn.)

 

Additional information: Virara was scammed into buying Tebasaki by a few rogue poachers trying to get rid of their illegally acquired mount. Because he wanders and is very crafty, he's evaded capture so far, and it is hard to link him to Virara since he doesn't outwardly recognize her as his owner. As you can see, he is as much of an asshole as a bird can be, but that may be because Virara also considers him an emergency food source. That is the source of his name.

Additional information: Virara tends to show a developing closeness with irregular interest in their behavior and way of life, which usually irritates or confounds her at first. Normally she is utterly indifferent to other people, so this is a promotion of sorts. Given time, Virara develops an intense loyalty not unlike a faithful hound, but she will never owe up to it. She attaches very quickly to older women as sister figures due to her emotional immaturity. She is highly insensitive, but is capable of some harsh, but useful, insight into others character that may prove useful for close acquaintances if they can endure her cold, vaguely hostile front.

However, they're fascinating to her, consuming a great deal of her thoughts, and she can't give them up these 'distractions,' no matter how hard she denies herself.

Employer: Virara follows orders without question, and does not make excuses when she inevitably breaks something.

Personal philosophies: 

Master is the ultimate enemy and ultimate source of knowledge, the only being worthy of the zenith of personal respect. All other things in the world have worth, at times even being useful, but they are "vulgar" and beneath her supreme transcendence. She is the strongest, and is thus inherently right. 

There is no sentience without the ability to actively choose to harm someone out of malice or for a contrivance of reasoning, as animals only do so out of a survival need; i.e. murder is an inherent part of personhood. 

Emotions can't be ignored, but neither do they need to last. They're useful insomuch as they drive you to action, but nothing beyond that. They are "straw dogs" meant to be burnt as sacrificial fuel. They aren't meaningless because they're useless; they're meaningless because they are transient. 

Those who lack the ability to defend themselves and make no effort to correct the problem deserve nothing.

Thinking about hypothetical situations is meaningless without strong evidence that it will occur soon. Dreaming about 'what if's' is a waste of time and focus. Likewise, flowery language that obfuscates your point is useless.

Politics: Indifferent. She doesn't even hate the Garleans, and only considers them an enemy because her Master fought against them during their conquest of Othard.

Spirituality: In Virara's words, "The gods don't know me, and I don't know them." She practices some Doman spiritual rituals unconsciously, but only out of imitation, not sincere piety. She has no particular reverence for the Twelve either. 

Prejudices: Virara irrationally fears and hates bald people, specifically those who aren't old enough to be naturally balding yet either are missing or have shaved their hair. Other than that, Virara is incapable of racism as she doesn't particularly distinguish between different cultures on a level higher than "I understand this well," or, "They confuse me." That being said, her manner of thinking/speaking have led her to make remarks that are unintentionally culturally insensitive in the past.

 

Greatest strength: The ability to empty one's heart and accept everything surrounding her, either to learn or to be unaffected by turmoil or fugitive thoughts. 

Greatest weakness or flaw: Inflexibility, the inability to change paths or connect with others.

Afternoon routine: Wooden dummy training, iron sand training, granite wheel training, lunch. Other times, day labor.

Evening routine: Forms training (secret) or going into the wilderness to fight wild animals at night. Other times, fishing or collecting bugs.

Sleep habits: Virara can sleep deeply anywhere, but typically is able to instantly wake up if she is disturbed. If she has trained hard though she will be out like a light and no amount of noise or even hitting will make her budge. She tries to get 7-8 hours of sleep a day if she can help it.

 

Additional information: Her routine includes time set aside for work frequently due to her poverty, but it's sporadic. Generally every day is training, from dawn to dusk. She occasionally will adopt a more loose schedule to allow her to spar or to travel to exotic locations to train. The Sea of Clouds is the most frequent one.

 

BACKSTORY:

A ship wrecked orphan, Virara grew up as a feral child and urchin in her home island's refugee community. Knowing little of society's ways, the girl eventually mugged the wrong woman - the sole practitioner of a diabolic martial art and veteran of Doma's last struggle before Garlemald vassalized them. Treated as a slave and non-sentient animal, Virara's intense will to murder her Master and free herself amused the woman, and from that day on raised Virara as Spoken, giving her her name and training her in the martial arts. Though Virara accepted the training as a way to slay her captor, after years of practice and time spent together, the thought became distant somehow. After helping foil an assassination attempt upon Master, for reasons Virara didn't understand herself, the woman deemed her ready to go on a journey of training and ordered Virara to travel to Eorzea to seek out Hamon Holyfist, whom she had met only once but knew of as a talented fistfighter in those days, and train under or defeat him. Virara did the former, being an occasional sparring partner during his rehabilitation, and left the guild without ever learning of his diminished skill, assuming he was humoring her.

BACKSTORY:

 

Koichi had a very complicated childhood. Both loved and loathed, both a spot of joy and stain on his fledgling family. The Shimizu were an up-and-coming family in Raen society, after his father, Umiuzu's many acts of heroism, strength and a skilled political career. However, despite this rise -- Umiuzu made a great many sacrifices to attain said prestige resulting in a loveless marriage of convenience and subsequent affair with a low-born love. Though Koichi was his second and illegitimate son, Umiuzu gave his beloved child an honorable name and even the family name as the best act of love he could bestow. This caused an uproar and scandal, which he quickly quelled as founder and patriarch; Koichi never knew of this and was raised as a legitimate son while his birth mother was moved to Eorzea for her own safety.

 

His childhood was happy but isolated, only ever knowing the direct care and love of servants and the occasional visitation from his father or brother. He was confined to his room most of his early life, thinking it was because of "illness" and for his "safety" rather than keeping his father's "shame" hidden from his political adversaries. Koichi believed in the blind idealism about his family's honorable and grand status until his 16th birthday, when his home was set ablaze by his father's enemies and all but he and the two servants who were involved in the act were killed. During the investigation of the incident, many of his family's dirty dealings came to light, severely affecting the already traumatized youth. However, the most severe blow to his world came when one of his father's few friends among the noble families allowed him  to live at his estate until he was able to get recompense for his family's murder and black on his feet.

 

There he learned about his brother's true nature: at best a Lothario and at worst a remorseless predator who took what he could from a woman and left the rest to the wind. The elder sister of the family had been romanced and dumped by his brother resulting in her and her daughter's own shunning and confinement. The proof of this claim was in the young girl's eyes, which matched his own distinct sapphire vision. She hadn't even given the child, who was already 3 years old, a name., only referring to her as "the girl" Koichi, having lost everything both material and familial, made a vow to not only restore his family's honor but to give "the girl" not only a proper name but his own family name.

 

It took 3 long years until his family's murder case was tried (only the two servants were proven to be involved and were punished) and Koichi and his niece, whom he named Haruame, both had the means and the ability to leave the estate. Rather than vowing revenge, the uncle and niece moved into the lush forests of Gridania to start over, just as their beloved city-state had been thrown into war and put to the torch by the Garlean Empire. There, with the help of some kind neighbors and business contacts, Koichi was able to formally study as a conjurer -- eventually traveling to Limsa Lominsa to attain his preferred occupation as a white mage. When Haruame came of age and showed great potential as an Archanist, Koichi picked up the tiny family and moved them to Limsa Lominsa so he could be nearby while she studied.

 

Ever since, Koichi's priority has been to get odd jobs to help his niece attain her own dream of becoming a Summoner like her grandfather.
