Gespenst Posted September 22, 2016 Share #1 Posted September 22, 2016 I want really sure where this should go but it said you could talk about the site here so... I was wondering what would count as unaceptable language in a character bio. I'm planning to write one for a character off the Torgud tribe so I'm going to have to use the word n---- (word five letters for a state of undress) at least once. Is that ok? I mean SE used it on their lore forum when they explained the tribes... Link to comment
Kage Posted September 22, 2016 Share #2 Posted September 22, 2016 Can you share the exact words of the rule you are questioning so I understand where you are coming from? As far as I know, naked is just fine. Link to comment
Unnamed Mercenary Posted September 22, 2016 Share #3 Posted September 22, 2016 Basically, please refrain from hate speech, grossly NSFW content, and other things of that caliber. If SE's used the words, it's likely fine. We are a PG-13 / low "M" rated site, so if it would be content you wouldn't be comfortable with someone in high school reading, it's best to check with the staff or post it elsewhere. Mildly NSFW content (violence, gore, sex, etc) is allowed, but we ask that the thread titles mark it as such and that you use spoiler tags for anything getting closer to the R-18 / M level. The same policy applies to the wiki and gallery to an extent. There are two art submission areas. One that's purely SFW/PG at the most (this is what will show on the site when you aren't logged in). There's also a PG13+ section that's for pinups, works with violence/blood/gore, etc, which has to be turned on to show in the side bar. (It's in your user profile settings!) If at anytime you aren't sure if the content you're posting is allowed, you can open up a request thread to get in touch with all the staff members at the follow link. Posts there are private to just you and the staff, so if there is something deemed "rule-breaking," we'll let you know and how to proceed. http://ffxiv-roleplayers.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=51 Link to comment

Greybarren Posted September 22, 2016 Share #7 Posted September 22, 2016 While true that naked is a fine word to use, particularly in the context of using it to assist in the description of likening your character's bum to a "ripe tomato", do take care with the following words: Dollop Cordwainer Lima Peregrinate Ambuscade Floccinaucinihilipilification Kindercarnavalsoptochtvoorbereidingswerkzaamhedenplan Kumquat 1 Link to comment

Raeje Posted September 22, 2016 Share #9 Posted September 22, 2016 Was thinking of the wrong 'N" word, and almost backed out with my hands raised. I swear I didn't do, or say anything. I didn't even touch the silverware. As for tomatoes...Well, I don't really see my butt as a tomato. Sorry. Link to comment

As far as I know, naked is just fine. I was thinking of this in particular "Don't get anyone fired." All content on our forums and wiki should fall somewhere between a Teen and Mature rating, or between a PG-13 and a "low" R rating. While your content can get a little racy or violent, don't post anything that would cause a reader to get fired or trigger a web filter. Use common sense to decide what's appropriate and be sure to use the spoiler tag to mark sections "NSFW" (not safe for work) if you have any concerns. I wasn't sure what would trigger a web filter exactly. Lol do you mean the word naked. Is that the word. I saw n----- and immediately thought of something else. Yeah, if you're not familiar with the Xaela tribes it's kind of hard to think of a way to describe a Torgud without using it - although SE actually didn't as it turns out. This desert tribe does not wear any clothes, choosing instead to cover their bodies almost entirely in a white paint created from mud, lime, and bone meal. The paint helps to reflect the relentless desert sun. I liked the idea of a tribe that in their preferred state would violate a closely held taboo of a lot of Eorzians - and then I got to thinking of how such a tribe would fight... Have no fear, lots of different cultures have fought nude. The Germanic tribes against the romans were a good example. Link to comment
Gespenst Posted September 22, 2016 Author Share #13 Posted September 22, 2016 Julius Caesar said that the Gauls fought naked (I'm not sure how much credence to give that since according to conventional wisdom the Celts invented mail but still...) but I wasn't despairing when I thought about that, I found it interesting. How would a naked army fight? "Almost certainly with spears and large shields", "What would be the weaknesses of such an approach...?" and so on. 1 Link to comment

How would a naked army fight? "Almost certainly with spears and large shields", "What would be the weaknesses of such an approach...?" and so on. I think he mixed up Celts and Germanics at times. The celts were a lot more 'civilized', given by the fact he looted so much stuff from them. The Germanics at that time were much more 'barbaric' The Zulu's are an example of an army that fought (mostly) naked. They essentially used a large force to hold the enemy in place, then had the rest of them sprint around and encircle the enemy. In some ways fighting naked can be a benefit pychologically. A man in a helm in armor is one thing to stab, it's another to stab someone's naked flesh. There is a certain revulsion human's have to such things. Link to comment

How would a naked army fight? "Almost certainly with spears and large shields", "What would be the weaknesses of such an approach...?" and so on. Julius Caesar was probably wrong then. The Gauls wore clothes and even were probably the only people at that time acually wearing pants. They also had a way better understanding on craftsmanship (gallic casks vs outdated greek/roman amphoras, etc), goldsmithing, and metallurgy than the romans. Also, to be more nitpicky, the term 'Gaul' was invented by Caesar himself to designate an actual huge group of different cultures and people, that all had their own way of doing things so...
