Yeah. It's finally up. Start your download folks, we got a beta to play.

 

Just 18 hours and 15 minutes away from the time of this postin'.

Prepare thou self launcher! The beta testers approach!

well SE said they wanted a stress test...(not sure this is what they had in mind)

Yeah at this time it looks like the launcher doesn't like it when you interrupt a file mid download.

 

as for file size, 7GB does seem rather small considering 6GB was just 1-30 content w/ no voices.. UNLESS we had voices during the previous phases and it was just "turned off" after unpacking it is only 8.4 GB

 

 

I suspect tomorrow we might have another patch maybe..2 GB or so to finish it off, or maybe on launch day. If not... I'm "very" impressed that just 8-9GB = what we have now. Very good compression and code optimization

Mine completely downloaded while I was getting ready for work!  Yay!  But why only 8 gigs?  Isn't that kind of small?

 

They are being smart, and releasing an open beta patch of that size.

 

Before early access, they will introduce the launch patch, which should give people the remaining 15 or so gigs.

There's fairly good odds the 20 gig figure was the 'breathing room' total, as in 'in the long run you'll need this much', I'd suspect there'll be a 2 gig patch for beta and maybe another one around there for EA.

Yeah my original prediction on the beta forums was around 10-14GB with worst case being 17GB One thing I do notice is that it looks like we're missing audio files unless they are part of the .dat

 

It literally looks like that 6.5 GB phase 3 client with just "slightly" bigger DAT files.

Keep in mind that, unlike 1.0, we're dealing with lower-resolution textures overall, which cuts down on the file size dramatically (one half the dimensions on both sides equates to a quarter of the total data). When high-resolution textures are released (along with DX11 support), you'll see the file size balloon very, very quickly.
